I am a self proclaimed native junkie. When suggesting the native, there's always someone that says "Well, I work on ladders all day and have to have the one hand operation of my pm2". In my own experience giving both the pm2 and para 3 good long carry opportunities, I cannot stand the compression lock. I find I have to shuffle my hand around to operate it and it just takes away from the joy of using a knife. The point is is that just because you (figurative you) who have never owned or handled a native and think back locks are for your grandfathers buck 110, does not mean that the native is not extremely easy to take out of the pocket, get to work, close and put back in the pocket. I use the native far easier one handed than any para model. In addition, on the fidget front, the spyderco USA made back lock is really something special and oh so, satisfying. Sorry for the native fanboy behavior. I love my natives!

I got the uncoated Rex 45 version myself a few weeks ago, it's an outstanding knife. It's broken in to the point that I can thumb flick it open (that was unexpected). I'm a huge fan of tool steel blades, they're more my taste than the stainless "super" steels. My S35VN Small Sebenza has been my edc since around 2014. It's a great knife but... that same knife in something like M4 would REALLY kick everything else permanently out of my edc rotation.
The Native 5 salt (lc200n) was my first spyderco, and first higher quality knife (I was carrying a Leek before). It got me hooked on spydercos and knife collecting, and is still my favorite folding knife of all time.
The Native 5 might be Spyderco's best value for the money, and a great place to get a feel for various different steels. It's not the thinnest behind the edge, but it also can hold up to abuse really well. Honestly, it's my favorite thing they make simply because if you need a knife, it's incredibly rare that the Native is straight up the wrong tool for the job. It might not be the best knife for the particular cutting task, but it will be 90% of the knife you need, and if it's the only thing you carried for the rest of your life, you probably wouldn't really be missing out much on that remaining 10% in the situations where something else would be better. It's not the best cardboard knife, the best apple knife, the best bags of sand knife, or the best "oh wow, this feels like a well made object" knife, but it is good at breaking down cardboard, can cut open an apple, can stand up to abuse, and definitely feels more premium than a cheaper back lock knife. It is in all regards and all situations, totally and completely, utterly and impressively, acceptable.
One overlooked benefit of the backlock is that you can safely clip it onto any waistband without worrying about it opening. This is so useful if you are wearing a skirt, any type of pants without proper pockets or if you want to be low profile.
You can’t fully appreciate the Native until you already have a family of Spydercos. Only then do you realize it may be the best model. After you get over your fidget “phase”, it will reveal itself to you! 🔪💕🔪
I'm almost 40. Got my first knife when I was 8. I never got over that phase 😂 I love my lockback spydies very much though and I don't see how I can't fidget with them
Love my Rex45 Native 5! The orange is perfect for outdoors and the steel is tough for hard tasks and the back lock is sturdy. I love the patina it develops.
The native 5 is great...s110v is not. I have a pm2 in s110v and the steel sucks, imo obviously. First cut the blade chipped. Couple months later it chipped again. I use my knives every day and wouldn't ever consider s110v again
Love my Native 5 salt. Carry it every time I'm going to the river/lake/beach. The only reason I don't carry it more is because I've come to prefer knives without finger choils.
I have 3 native 5's now, rex45 g10 is my favorite. It comes in so many steels that are readily available. We just need a compression lock or ball lock model now
The original S30V Native was my introduction to Spyderco knives. It's a great knife, I carried it for a very long time before I decided to upgrade / diversify into other knives.
The Tenacious was my gateway to Spyderco. I liked it so much I picked up the PM2. I really fell in love with Spydercos after that and picked up a Native 5 LW. Great little knife. It has seen a lot of pocket time. Definitely underrated.
My introduction to the Native family was in March of 2022 when I got delivery of my Shaman. I then bought the Native Chief in S30V and I loved it. It was just a bit too big for everyday carry. I bought a Native 5 LW in CPM-SPY27. Although I am into bigger knives, I really fell for the Native 5. After that, I bought the Native 5 in G10 and S110V. I think the Native 5 is the perfect everyday utility knife.
My Native drop point was my first Spyderco knife ever! I got it years ago when it was still fresh from the company at only $75. I have an endura, and recently manix but my native is still my best and most preferred because it just works and gets the job done. Not too big like the resilience or too small like the dragonfly, and unlike the delica it has a solid finger choil. Most underrated Spyderco knife with out a doubt. Can't wait to get another!
Definitely underrated! I love the Native 5 and have seven different versions yet, with different steels and handle scale materials. S90V, REX45, Cruwear and S110V, with FRN, smooth G10 and fluted CF. Of all the versions the FRN S110V is my most used one, mainly for cardboard cutting and other tasks in and around the house. Absolutely great ergonomics, easy to operate both left and right handed and it doesn't scream 'dangerous knife' if I have to use it with other people around. It's almost up for everything you throw at it, within reason. Although I love the Native 5 it doesn't get much pocket time anymore as I prefer the Para 3 a bit more and honestly forgot about it. LOL
I’m a lefty and I want a native 5 compression lock, honestly I have no issue using right handed compression locks as long as the clip is on the left side so I have something to grip. I like my para 3s way more than my lefty pm2 because there’s barely any aftermarket parts for the lefty pm2, so I just reckon they should make a right handed compression lock native. The caged ball bearing lock would be really cool but Spyderco seems to be much more comfortable making knives with the compression lock for some reason. Would love to see more knives with the CBBL Edit: So my first native 5 was delivered the other day and I still want a compression lock native 5 but my god this is the best backlock I have ever experienced, it’s ridiculously smooth, and after disassembly and lubing with gunny glide it’s 100% flickable which I’ve heard a lot of people have trouble with for whatever reason
I recently decided to get a new folder with a nice steel (I often fall back on carrying just a SAK Cadet because I just love that tool), and I was leaning towards The Para 3 LW in Spy27. Then I saw this video, and I ordered both a Para3 LW and Native 5 LW in SPY27 thinking I would decide which one I preferred and send the other one back. Here I am nearly a week later still debating which to choose(I can't keep both, my conscience won't let me). I feel like the Native is the best fitting knife have ever held The ergos are just the best I have experienced (I am sure stuff like the Shaman and PM2 are up there as well, but I like to stay under 3" on all of my folders.). On top of that I genuinely appreciate how it looks. It walks the line between a normal looking folder while still having a signature Spydey look better than any other knife in their lineup around this size. There are only two problems... The wire clip and compression lock on the Para 3 are so good. I used to EDC a Squeak and a Dragonfly, so I have become quite attached to that style of clip. If I could get a Native with those two features, I may never have a legitimate reason to buy another knife. I'm really glad to have stumbled across your channel. I love the content. Would you ever be interested in reviewing some more traditional styles of knife? I have a few I could send your way. I have a higo no kami, Douk Douk, and an Opinel No.7. I also still have my Spyderco Squeak if you have any interest in reviewing that. It's a slipjoint spyderco with a sub 2" blade. Probably one the most legal knives in the world.
I just fell down the Spyderco rabbit hole a few months ago. Got a Sage 5 LW and was instantly hooked by the ergonomics and compression lock. Got a Roadie because I love small, traditional slipjoints. Got a Manix 2 to try the ball cage lock and see what Golden could do. I gotta say, as much as I love them all, they all suck when you have gloves on. I thought a back lock was outdated, but man it really is a tried and true workhorse.
Good choice! The Native 5 was my first 'expensive' folder and I love it still, but the Sage 5 is superior in almost every way. I do still think the Native's bladeshape looks better, and while I'm usually hesitant to put my non-budget blades through any kind of abuse I do have absolute faith in my Native's strength and capability😑
Great points! :) Only thing I just have to say concerning the backlock: There are at least 5 ways to operate this locktype one handed, one even with fingers all the time out of te blade path almost exactly like with a compression lock. Additionally, the backlock is safer in the pocket and also in operation , better usable with gloves or cold, wet fingers, and makes for a nice closed back on the handle (WITHOUT that "hotspotty" comp.lock cutout).
Spot on assessment of why the Native gets overlooked. The fidget factor is a real thing, but it is truly an absurd way to judge a knife based on its intended purpose. You know what an analogy to that is? Cars. People look at a car, like the price, the interior, the exterior, the reliability, and the other stuff that makes it a good purchase for them - but then they get to the part about infotainment and they reject it because the car cannot post a TikTok of them singing behind the wheel. It's absurd, are we driving cars or fidgeting with the tech? Also, the argument about lockbacks not being ideal for 1H operation is only valid for knives that lack the jimped choil of the Spydercos. I have a couple of Cold Steel lockbacks that I would never dare to close with one hand, but this is simply not an issue with the Native lineup.
I recently purchased the light weight salt native 5 in MagnaCut and I love it, the action is still a bit stiff but it’s getting broken in and it carries very nicely hardly noticeable in the pocket
Started with the PM3 and the Native 5 was my next purchase. Wow I love that knife. My PM3, Delica and Dragonfly sit in the drawer most of the time, unless I need a bigger knife, than it is the Manix 2. Most times it is my Native that wins out.
Great subject for a video. Definitely agree with the premise. A Native in frn with the more square clip (got stolen) and a stainless Delica (pulled out by a coat hem) were my first Spydercos. I now have 12, almost all sprints, exclusives, or limited editions. But I still bought a catalog FRN 1/2-serr Native 5 to replace ol' stoley because it's that good and completely dependable. Not only rides the line of 'big enough for.../small enough to...' but reprofiles it to a laser edge.
I own the PM2, PM3, Manix, Shaman, and Native 5, and without a doubt the Native is my favorite by far. It’s not even a close choice. And the Rex 45 steel on my Native 5 is the best steel I’ve ever used in my 40 years of collecting. The 4V in my PM3 is runner up, but not even close to the Rex 45.
You were right with saying FRN for the Native 5, the Manix 2 LW is FRCP, both just fancy names for plastic! My collection has a tie (4 ea.) for Native & Manix versions, but only one PM2 & 2 Para 3's. I don't even care about fidget factor because in the end, the knife is a tool & not a toy!
I think the native 5 is the best lw spyderco, the back lock allows it to be used lil harder and u can get it in any steel. Also the geometry is nice! Very thin grind! Awesome content
When I was considering getting a Spyderco I was very strongly debating between this and the Sage 5. I ultimately went with the Sage 5 due to the combination of the compression lock and the presence of a thumb ramp for ergo purposes. Doesn't mean that I won't still get a Native 5 because I was already in the hobby of collecting pocket knives at that time, and in some ways still appreciate them.
for EDC too, if someone who isn't a knife person needs to borrow your knife, a back lock is much more intuitive than a compression, ball, or axis lock.
If you remove the finger guard behind the front choil, makes this knife so much more ergonomic and extends the handle ( Only took 2 minutes with metal file and sandpaper to smooth it out )
440V was s60v which was replaced by the s90v. I have a few knives in that steel and it's actually a good preforming steel in my experience. I really like the native I traded off my Rex version to help add to my microtech collection but it's a GREAT carry knife that feels great in the hand and could pretty much drop it shut. I would love a native with a plunge lock like the smock!
I've lost two of them in New Orleans. Never went back to look for them because it's such a fantastic knife I was happy someone would be introduced to it and I'm happy to buy another. Only model I've had in six different configurations. At the end of the day, it's my favorite Spyderco.
Great video of a great knife! The Native 5 has been my introduction into Spyderco and I’m loving it. I started off with a blacked out / part serrated blade for a work knife and just recently picked up a SPY27 with deep carry clip as a “friendlier” edc.
@@Paa375 I would opt for a plain edged blade for cardboard and maybe look at the alternate steels. Personally I use the part serrated because I’m doing greenhouse work, lots of cutting into bags of gritty material and eventually the blade dulls but the teeth will still tear open bags and saw through plastic.
I picked up that black, serrated model a few months ago. Love the grind on it and how light it is in the pocket, but I still wanted something of similar size and weight, but with a regular blade. I decided to go with a Para 3. I prefer the compression lock, the blade is super sharp, and I admit it is fun to do the little “spydey-flick”. They’re both great little edc knives.
I'm thinking about grabbing up a Native 5 here actually. Along with a Stretch 2 in k390 I'm eyeing up. I've always skipped over it, and for the models you mentioned lol. I got a Tenacious back in like 09 per Blade Forums recommendation, which put me on the hunt for more locking folders of higher quality and I hopped on one of the first runs of PM2s in 2010 or 11, then a Manix, then an Endura, several delicas, several sages, a couple crickets, bugs, kiwis and small offerings from them, and so on from there. I've loved just about every one of Sal and Eric's designs they've come out with and a lot of the other designs from other makers as well. The native just seems to get skipped for the next knife everytime. I want to expand my FRN collection so it's now going on my short list.
23:15 To add to the point you made about blade length legality, in some states with restrictions against gravity knives there have been people arrested for carrying compression lock knives because a cop misinterpreted it as a gravity knife because you can press the lock, point the knife down, and the blade falls open. This potential concern is nonexistent with a back lock.
I think the one missing knife that should here is the LC200N one. Also, for me the fidget factor is one of the most important factors of a knife. 90% of the time I spend with my knife is NOT cutting, its playing with it. But i get that as an actual tool, this can definitely be overlooked.
Iagree with your analysis overall. Even more! If they made a Button Lock ( or Smock type) version of the Native 5, this would be my favourite Spyderco. The blade shape is the best looking in the whole catalogue..
That’s a LOT of natives on screen! I Couldn’t agree with a statement more tho. If I could only pick one 3”ish size knife, it would be the native. No contest. Rock on dude. 🇺🇸🤙
I bought a native when I first started getting into knives. Everything about it is great except I bought a combo edged one. Didn't know I wasn't a combo edge fan until I started using it. Got a plain edged one now.
I totally agree the Native is an underrated model. This and the Manix are my favorite Spyderco's and I own four of each. I also carry them way more than my PM2 that I only have One of (I gave my older one to a friend).
Yeah. Out of the U.S. made spyderco's, the native 5 is underrated. It is better than the pm2 and para 3. However, i think Seki City and Taiwan offer better back lock options, with slicier blades. Delica 4/endela/endura and the stretch from Seki City. The Chaparral from Taiwan. And then you also have the UK pen knife made in the U.S. which is basically a native 5 slip joint, but the blade is more slicey than the native 5. Spyderco has a lot of options to shuffle through. My favorite purchase thus far is the stretch 2 in k390- it retired my para 3 to a fidget toy lol. I have dragonfly 2 in k390 on the way, cuz why not? Why not collect all the k390 options? Why not grab a chaparral? It is probably the best leaf blade shape offering from spyderco in terms of cutting. This is my opinion. Spyderco is awesome- offers a range of steels and knives for evrryone
I looked at the Para 3 and Native at a local shop. I bought the Para 3 and I am madly in love with it. The compression lock is so intuitive and the the G10 scales feel great. I sliced up a bunch of boxes today and I was super impressed with the handling and the way the Para 3 sliced. I will say the Para 3 feels a little bulky in my pocket, but it's gonna work out just great. It has become my benchmark reference. (not BenchMade ..see what I did there?) LOL
I prefer the lines of the Native series to the PM2 or Para. The Chief is cool if a little large, and weirdly Knifecenter actually has the REX 45 Chief sprint run in stock right now, which I feel like supports your contention that the back lock is an issue for some people. And I think you're right.
Love the native 5 lightweight s35vn. That red one is amazing looking!! I like the native 5 over the pm2 and pm3. Strong backlock, strong tip, great ergonomics and USA made. Great review as always thx
Switching to native 5 because the compression lock doesn’t keep black closed when dropped and also opens easier in the pocket. I carry pen and keys in pocket and my pm3l has opened up before. The lock back is more rigid and thus safer imo
The backlock seems much more durable and rugged. Compression lock is for people looking for toys who care more about fidget factor over heavy duty utility.
Guilty - got plenty of PM2, Para 3, and Manix 2 variants. Started with Para 3 and still my favorite model. Have my first Native coming this week. Yet to try the Shaman. I am sure I will like it. Next is the Sage 5. Basically the same design with a compression lock.
I think I agree that the mid back-lock is a big reason the Native 5 is in the shadows of the compression lock. Weirdly though, I fidget more with my Endela than Para3 - and I honestly don't know why! Any lock change on the Native would be a total redesign, so not really a Native anymore. Cheers mate! And yes, I'm looking at getting one ;)
I think you maybe underplayed the one-handed closure. You’re right you’re not opening and closing all the time but when working you often need to keep one hand on the object and the other putting your knife away.
I'd be curious to see how many natives Spyderco sells. I'd guess it would be more than you think. The 2 Spydercos I ways see at local Walmarts are the Tenacious and Native.
I like lockbacks and love the blade shape. The reason I passed on this was lack of hardware for the price. I have practically the same thing in the form of the efficient no I don't get the nice steel's but I don't mind sharpening either. If I'm going to pay 126$ for a knife yes I whould buy the manix2 in g10 scales s30v steel and steel liners I like to have my money's worth.
Could you tell me on the difference between N5 G10 and FRN (FRCP). I have the LC200N, and when looking from the back side side (opposite of the pivot), the construction is not completely perpendicular to left and right side: the left scale drops more than the right on the back behind the end of back lock lever. Not sure if all FRN N5 have the same flaw, as the moulds are basically the same, or did I just get one from a crappy mould. I am askind because I'm looking to get the serrated DLC version, bit as this is in FRN also, I would get a heart attack seeing another deformation like that.
I may have gotten a Native first but I eneded up with a Delica so I don't see a reason to especially after getting a Shaman and manix. I'm not sure if I am gonna get another spyderco anytime soon since I got the Delica, shaman, manix LW and now PM2.

Would love to see more knives with the CBBL
Edit: So my first native 5 was delivered the other day and I still want a compression lock native 5 but my god this is the best backlock I have ever experienced, it’s ridiculously smooth, and after disassembly and lubing with gunny glide it’s 100% flickable which I’ve heard a lot of people have trouble with for whatever reason
A really great knife. One of the best and very easy to use 1 handed while not being too intimidating to non-knife people when you use it.
Just got the Knifecenter exclusive Native 5 in cruwear and black G-10. Love it. Wish it had the David Boye dent. Love the Chaparrel too
I picked the Sage 5 over the Native 5 due to the compression lock on the Sage 5.
I prefer the Sage 5 and compression lock as well.
Like DCA, I have slightly larger hands, but that finger choil lets me get a four finger grip comfortably.
DCA! That's a slightly larger than average compliment.
My first choice was the Spyderco Native LW. Everything about it appealed to me including sharpness and what a knife is made for....not a toy!
They need a compression lock native 5. Had to go with a lil native. Love it
As soon as I saw the video notification I clicked on it 👍🏼 was extremely excited. Thx for the video
Good knife, but I went with the Sage 5 for the compression lock and the wire clip.
I just bought my third Native 5 yesterday (04/20/2023). S30V with black G10. Just like the one you reviewed.
Popular and underrated.. like Rush! 😉 Own a Native 5 Salt and I really like it!
Fellow Rush fan here. I got tickets to see Primus play A Farewell to Kings in June. I'm stoked!
Love the Native series! I have the Rex45 and 4V.
My Native 5 Maxamet gets a lot of pocket time. It’s a beast. Thanks MC!
for EDC too, if someone who isn't a knife person needs to borrow your knife, a back lock is much more intuitive than a compression, ball, or axis lock.
I think they did a good job on the native chief, from what I’ve heard I think it might be better than the military.....
Great video of a great knife! The Native 5 has been my introduction into Spyderco and I’m loving it. I started off with a blacked out / part serrated blade for a work knife and just recently picked up a SPY27 with deep carry clip as a “friendlier” edc.
I’m thinking of the part combination edge I also use it at work. The serated edge should go through cardboard very nicely
I have an og spyderco native from the late 80s that my mom gave me when I was a teen, pretty sweet first knife
My dream native 5 would be in K390, shame they haven't done it yet but here's hoping one day.
It's the only Spyderco I have two models of. Orange S90v and the Salt version!
I think the one missing knife that should here is the LC200N one. Also, for me the fidget factor is one of the most important factors of a knife. 90% of the time I spend with my knife is NOT cutting, its playing with it. But i get that as an actual tool, this can definitely be overlooked.
If they made a Compression Lock version, I think it would be an absolute best seller.
Iagree with your analysis overall.
Even more! If they made a Button Lock ( or Smock type) version of the Native 5, this would be my favourite Spyderco. The blade shape is the best looking in the whole catalogue..
Just got my first native 5 in the mail - the CPM Rex 45 white FRN version from GP Knives. And yeah, it’s awesome.
Hows the steel held up against rust?
@@kpfagerberg not a spot on it. But I use EDCi formula on it every week or so.
I have a Native 5, and really enjoy it. The drawback of the knife for me, is that there is a lot more grip area (with the choil) vs. cutting edge.
I totally agree the Native is an underrated model. This and the Manix are my favorite Spyderco's and I own four of each.
I also carry them way more than my PM2 that I only have One of (I gave my older one to a friend).
The Delica 4 is stellar in FRN. Thin blade, but not fragile. Must look at Native 5. Would be happy to skip the hump in the pocket ;)
i have the pink s35vn. the woman i'm courting finds it cute that i will purchase the s30v for her.
This comment gave more questions than answers lol
I own a Paramilitary 2, a Para 3, a Manix 2, a Lil Native and a Dice. The Native 5 is my next Spyderco.
Let's ask together a Native 5 with Smock's or similar button lock!!! Let's make real noise! Hahaha...
Yeah, I laugh but I say it for real...
Definitely agree a plunge lock native would be perfect!!!
The native 5 LW and the Para 3 DLT exclusive in cruwear are my go to knives.
I like my Native5 more than my Para3. Only bad thing is that I got FRN (not bad) but I now want the g10 version!
Get the AWT aluminum scales. Turns the Native 5 into Primo 😗💋
Hell yeah. Glad to see the native getting some love. It was my first spydie and still one of my most carried
Mi madre found the discontinued one in satin blade at the beach while metal detecting and the cpms30v barely had any divots it's amazing steel
I love the Native. Just got my fifth, the Spy27 version. They’re perfect edc knives.
I have the CF S90V version and the teal is the exclusive of the wholesale company I am employed at.
Guilty - got plenty of PM2, Para 3, and Manix 2 variants. Started with Para 3 and still my favorite model. Have my first Native coming this week. Yet to try the Shaman. I am sure I will like it. Next is the Sage 5. Basically the same design with a compression lock.
How did you like native 5? I mostly use a para 3 but thinking about picking up a N5 because how close it is in shape to the shaman
Wow weird, your videos are like facebook ads I was just looking these up since I just ordered the Native Chief yesterday lol.
What are your thoughts on the Sage 5 in comparison?
Great video have a few Natives. I have a Native II stainless handle and blade with AUS 10 steel bought I think back in 2001.
Love my Native 5 Maxamet. The back lock doesn't bother me. I just picked up the Native Chief in Rex-45 and man what a great knife
440V was the name Crucible originally gave to the steel that is now called S90V.
No, that is S60V.
S90V used to be named 420V.
Or the Sage 5!! I absolutely love it and yes I know the Sage 5 isnt a US made Spyderco but still!
Just get a lil native best of both worlds
Would you consider selling the teal one? Can’t find one anywhere
The whole sage line is def under rated
I want that CF version but by the time it was on my radar, it was hard to get.
