1000% agreed on your point about the action. The roll out on these is so freaking satisfying, and I love how powerful you feel doing a reverse flick, haha. It's weird how fun they are to fidget with.. and sure, maybe its not like having a button lock with a front flipper, but it's still fun in it's own right.
I agree that the native 5lw is one of the best smaller edc knives. I have 2 of them that have been reground. Also they do have side to side play if you disengage the back lock and check, but when its locked up it's solid.
Spyderco did a run of the Native 5 with flutted titanium linerless scales in a starburst/sunburst pattern, and they're spectacular, but rare. Look it up.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Spyderco is pound for pound the best knife company period. There are cooler knives, there are more fidgety knives, there are smoother and higher tolerance knives, but Spyderco just does everything extremely well. Hands down the best and most consistent with heat treat and blade geometry which makes them as a tool absolutely top notch. As you said that and a variety of steels not to mention a variety of models and sub models with the salt, lightweight, normal, and exclusive editions they come out with. The Native 5 does envelope everything that makes Spyderco great all while having a back lock. They aren’t fidget monsters but they are certainly work horses with awesome ergos and perfect blade shape. I agree with you 100 percent across the board.
Literally, my only beef with spyderco is their budget line. The Steele hasn’t changed in forever and the price is too high for what it is. Imo they could easily put g10 scales on their under 100 knives. Very few knife companies but spyderco sell frn scales on an 80 or 95 dollar knife idk 🤷♂️
Native 5 vs Para 3 vs I’d love to see the Natives release a better ambi lock - perhaps the ball bearing or a compression lock… hell, even a more modernized take on a back lock (cold steel style)
The Spyderco I have most used were budget ones, made abroad - the Resilience and the Persistence, and I used them daily. I later on bought a Chaparral because I wanted a very thin blade, and it delivered. The thing was that the Chaparral's handle was just too small for my hand. My point is this: you can buy a great knife but you also need to consider how it's going to work for you with day after day use.
5 reasons I think the title of the best Spyderco for EDC goes to the Manix 2 regular or lightweight. 1. The perfect size. The Native 5 is just a little to small. 2. The best lock. It is strong and very figitable plus it can be tuned to your liking with aftermarket parts 3. Very comfortable handle and choil. Same texture as the Native 5 for a great grip even when the hands are cold or wet. 4. Lots of steel choices. 5. Continuously curved leaf shaped blade that has a lowered tip. The Vosteed Nightshade does the same thing but is even more exaggerated.
I agree with all those points and I absolutely love the Manix as well. I’d probably give it second place though, just because if the size. The Native is just easier to carry. But it is a really tough decision, especially if you’re talking about the LW Manix… you got me thinking!
There is a lot of personal preference involved. Either one is a great choice! Hard to go wrong. I have always loved larger knives so that weighs heavily on my choice. I also really like the Manix 2 XL! I put custom scales on mine and it takes it to the next level with both grip and looks!@@doodysdaggers
I don’t have a Native 5 yet but you did make a great case to get one. Maybe I can get one in Magnacut. I do have a delica in k390 and I know that satisfying lock up you were talking about with the Native 5. Great video.
I have three, gave a lightweight to my son. Only knives I carry, the best has full liners and burple G10 with S110V, the second best is a linerless with micarta handles in Rex 45. The third had G10 linerless but the blade is more or less useless CruWear. The lock is the only one any folding knife should have. Strongest in testing and broke the blade not the lock. Would love a Maxamet and a Magna cut, but they are lightweights which are a no go for me.
Can't add anything to your wonderful review other than, YEP! True. Love my Magnacut Native 5 LW. One of the best, if not THE best all around knives I own.
Just got my first spiderco 2 weeks ago. The ambitious. Its the first time iv spent more then like 10 bucks on a pocket knife and since i already ordered another. The lil native in s30v. They really are nice knives. And i love the way they look with the g10 grips. now i want a native 5!
Man your making me wanna get another LW version. Had a PJ before in S35vn but sold it bc it was just too ho hum in that configuration. I do have a native 5 still in S110V and G10 with full liners. Its a little tank very well made but it hardly gets carried bc I generally like something a little bigger but its definitely a solid model that’s popular for good reason. I’ve always preferred the Sage series like the 2 and 5 for smaller Spyercos but they only come in a handful of configurations with most in s30v, not that there’s anything wrong with that steel. I do like how the native carries its very compact and no hump when closed like most leaf shapes blades they offer. My only real gripe with the LW was the clip position leaving a little too much handle poking out the pocket and the non standard screw mounting pattern making the owner buy a native specific aftermarket clip to address that. Now a few years later or so there are more options out in the LW new steels and handle colors, in fact i was eyeing that new MC salt you mentioned just this morning haha.
I've had phases where I preferred other knives. In the grand scheme of my last 15 years of knife collecting though, I always come back to the delica for a small edc. I've got 3 of them, one in Super Blue steel, a wharncliffe k390, and a standard vg10. I go to the vg10 the most honestly. The superblue is a bit of a collector item at this point and isn't as tough down at the edge as vg10 in my uses. The wharncliffe is nice but I've found a regular drop point works just as well for utility and has the belly for other tasks. Wish I would have gotten the regular blade shape in k390 instead, maybe I'll see if anyone wants to trade at some point. Idk yet. The native is on my list and possibly the next knife I buy. It's got the classic leaf shape blade, spyderco does a wonderful job with the back lock, and I like their frn handles. I may go with the magnacut salt version to knock 2 birds with one stone. I wanna see for myself what all the talk is about over magnacut, and I want to get a native. If I end up liking the knife but not the steel then I can always get an s30v native. Then sell or store the native salt in my collection.
I agree. Spyderco has the best FRN in the game. Best heat treats on the steel too. I’d like to see some different designs that don’t look so utilitarian tho.
Kapara, Smok, Drunken, Spidyechef, Cali, Subvert, Chapparal, even the Delica in titanium and Damasteel or Native 5 in Carbon Fiber and S90V. There are a few options out there. Arguably most of their knives can be made 'less utilitarian' with aftermarket parts, but out of the factory there aren't a lot of 'high end' ones. Plenty tho, given the niche market segment they're aiming for with the prices.
The Native 5 Salt in LC200N is one of my favorite EDC knives along with the Dragonfly 2. Both knives see daily carry. Very versatile and inconspicuous. Nice vid! 👍
Spyderco makes awesome knifes. I’m petty proud of my para 3 and fallen in love with the para 2 in cruwear, both extremely beautiful and useful especially the para 2 holds the edge very well and easy to sharpen.
The native truly is incredible, I held off buying one for ages cause it’s a backlock and people always say you can’t (or they’re not good) flick them. What I found tho is if you disassemble them and lubricate them from inside with a good lubricant they become easy enough to flick (if you have the technique for flicking backlocks down). Also the backlock on the native is the best I’ve ever used. It locks up 100% solid yet drops to your finger ridiculously smoothly ,so smoothly in fact that I thought at first it had to be loose! But nope, rock solid. I can even disengage it with my index finger and the blade will drop completely closed. I also agree on the FRN, I have no desire to replace the scales on my maxamet native which is extremely unusual for me with FRN knives, even my delicas I replace the scales on. The only thing I don’t leave stock on the FRN natives is the clip, the MXG deep carry native (FRN) clip is a must for me to actually carry it. I liked the FRN native so much I very quickly ordered a g10 one and a pair of anodised fluted titanium scales from RGT which have almost arrived and are gonna look so damn good! Edit: just heard the comment about Spyderco’s detents and while I largely agree (I’ve had a couple US models with annoying levels of detent play) you obviously haven’t owned one of the Taichung flippers (excl the smock) which are notorious for having terribly, terribly weak detents! I have a mantra 3 and the stock detent on that was insanely bad, flopped out a quarter of the way on the flip bahahaha. I used a Dremel to widen the detent hole along with a couple other fixes and now it’s one of my favourite knives but just thought it’s worth mentioning
Hmm interesting, I need to take apart my Maxamet one and lube it up. It’s still super stiff. Yeah I’ve never tried any flipper tab Spydercos, guess I should have said all compression lock spydercos I’ve tried have had excellent detents 😉
My first single blade folding knife with a lock was a Spyderco endura. Since then I have consistently bought spyderco knives. Every single one I have owned has been a joy to use. The native is the next spyderco on my list. I’ve only owned their Japanese backlocks. I’m interested to see what a us spyderco backlock is like.
As a guy with large hands (not being that guy, just saying) this is my favorite Spyderco frn model and incredibly comfortable, I never thought it would be just looking at it but once I was able to try one I was hooked!
Shaman is the GOAT work knife for me. The Native 5 LW offers all of the same hard working functionality in a LW EDC package. It is so good. I really like the lock back and find really figdety. I have the Magnacut version, it was packed with grease. I cleaned out the grease and polished the surface at the pivot point and I had my knife reverse flicking on day 2. Same theory as when I polish washers.
I have to agree on the blade shape. I love this type of leaf blade shape - not aesthetically, but functionally I love it. Wharnies are too straight for general applications, especially if the blade to handle isn't angled slightly. Wharnies are too hyped in the knife community right now. Unless you are solely cutting boxes open, a slight belly is much more useful in a wide range of applications
The backlock is perfect for utility tools and one of the stronger more durable and reliable locks. The BM axis lock looks fancier but is much more flimsy and not as durable.
Applied Weapons Tech has made aluminum scales for the native 5. I’ve got a couple sets coming and if they’re anything like the rest of their work, I’m sure it’ll be a home run
Would be curious to get your take on the manix 2 lw. I have to agree with what you said about spydercos new generation frn texture. I have it on my resilience lightweight, and compared to my g10 model, i dont really mind it + its noticably lighter- which is nice for a fairly large edc blade. I own a pm2 as well, and quite a few other soydercos- but im looking to pick up a used manix or pm2 (for a user) right now- kinda leaning towards the pm2 over the lightweight but theyre in the same price range. The manix appeals to me for the ambi lock (im left handed) but i feel like the cme would work well for me on the pm2.
the back lock pretty much kills it for me so ill stick with my sages...they are very close to each other though...and im ngl, the mini pallet to hold the post-its is dope haha
Dude, it took me years to finally get a Spyderco, and after 3 weeks of carrying one daily... I FINALLY get it. They're just workhorses, plain and simple. I literally could not ask for a better knife to do absolutely everything I need to do on a daily basis.
Don’t own one yet but I’m getting my father in law the s90v Carbon Fiber version for Christmas. I’ll order it in a couple days. If I like it I’ll get me one also! As always good video man. Keep it up!
@@doodysdaggers for me it's still in the Spydie family. A toss up between the Manix2 and the Shaman, with the Shaman having a slight edge mainly because I have big azz hands
Handling 100+ spydercos a day 4 days a week, Yes spyderco is one of the best production companies. There are some things here and there like blade play/centering issues, but otherwise all ✅
Between the shaman and native 5, pm 2 and para 3, manix 2 and sage 5. Which would you say is the best bigger work knife, smaller edc knife combo. I like the Manix but just curious. They all seem to fit this formula of a bigger knife that's generally better and a smaller and more lightweight knife that's still amazing.
Well the Shaman is definitely the heavy duty work knife. The Manix is a good work knife too, just thinner blade stock and smaller. I think a a shaman and native 5 combo is great. Or a Shaman and a wharnie Delica 🤠
Did they did a higher hardness on the green batch? I have the LC200N yellow one, honestly it has to be around 56-58, it's bad so I dislike the knife. Also, it's too small for my hands to not use the choke up, I like a little more length, especially for cutting food and other messy stuff I don't want on my fingers or in my knife. I may go for the k390 stretch 2 next. There are so many good knives out there, but spydies are their own thing, no other knife melts in the hand like that, and that frn grip is superior to everything imho. And the Steels available of course. K390, I mean... Unseen anywhere else, right.
It’s not the heat treat, LC200N just doesn’t have good edge retention. It’s super stainless but doesn’t hold an edge long at all. I bought one because I wanted a knife I could take fishing or working in the rain and not worry about rust. But if you want a good edge that lasts, go with one of the other versions
@@doodysdaggers Metal complex has a chart with hrc testing of production knives. Spydercos' lc200n came at 56, but the steel can be heat treated up to 59, I feel 59 would have been better...
@@doodysdaggers yeah, and it's cool to see the evolution of the salt serie, H1, LC200N and finally Magnacut, each time gaining a lot of edge retention and loosing a little bit of corrosion resistance and toughness. The native is an awesome platform, and being the first they do Magnacut on says something!
The hole in the blade is more simple and practical than the thumb studs. I love the minimalist design of these natives they're true durable utility tools. The less screws spacers and studs are in the design the more rugged it will be. Many knives are just toys and jewelry that are made to look pretty more so than usefulness and will mostly be used for "fidgeting factor" and not real work.
👍🏼to you. But I’m not paying the price. :) I know the steel and heat treat and all that; I’ll never notice any difference from a quality knife at half the price. I am a cheap-ass😆 I already own multiples of the best edc for me. I did watch & listen to your whole video. :)👍🏼
I carry the Magnacut version often. In particular, when running, working out, etc., and it’s a great lightweight option for this. I’m thinking of adding another and getting the titanium scales. It’s just so good as an EDC knife. Thanks for the video.
If they made a choiless version I’d be down but the cutting edge is too small for the overall size. At that point I’d rather rock a dragonfly or mini native.
So you convinced me to get one. Been handling it for 2 weeks now. What pocket clip would you recommend for deep carry? I'm torn between the MXG with a cutout or a Lynch NW.
@doodysdaggers at first I thought I'd find the blade length wanting but it suits my needs just fine. I really love the texture on the FRN. That and G10 are my preferred handles. Real solid for what it is. Only thing I didn't like was I could feel the clip when thumb rolling it hence why I decided to change it up. Will get the Mxg most probably.
My lc200n has an black standard clip. Yours is not? And yes the native 5 is amazing. I carry it the most for edc. And no worries on the beach where I live.

The third had G10 linerless but the blade is more or less useless CruWear. The lock is the only one any folding knife should have. Strongest in testing and broke the blade not the lock. Would love a Maxamet and a Magna cut, but they are lightweights which are a no go for me.
I would love to get a steel liners and g10 version sometime! Seems like they are rare, so they still make them that way?
I just got the magnacut and it is BOSS!!! cant agree more , solid points bro, solid knife, killer video!
Nice nice! Yeah man it’s just perfect. Glad ya got one 🤠
It's also worth noting it comes in magancut, which I and many others consider the best stainless steel.
Amen brother!
Native5 is one of my favs. I bought G10 s30 and salt magnacut. Did blade swap. So black g10 magnacut native5. Spydie flex.
Hell yes 🤘🤠🤘
I don’t like it when the knife rusts quickly, but I also like it when there’s a lot of carbon, so I chose the s110v.😂
I wish sage5 and native5 could have a baby. Different steels and clip sage5 would be 🐐
When GP knives had the satin or DLC rex45 native 5 lw for 112 bucks... that was the deal of the year in a high performance bad ass!
Damn! Missed that one
The Native 5 is the most complete package knife in my working knives collection. i have 3.
You will probably fall in love
Native 5 excellent for general edc. But my daily is the Manix 2. It suits my needs better.
Great pitch, I’m convinced. The Magnacut version is looking might tempting right now.
love your videos thanks so much for making these videos for weirdos like me
As a guy with large hands (not being that guy, just saying) this is my favorite Spyderco frn model and incredibly comfortable, I never thought it would be just looking at it but once I was able to try one I was hooked!
Yessir! As soon as you grip it in your hand and start cutting you fall in love
I agree 100%. Have the magnacut version and dyed the scales. Favorite knife
AWT is the company you’re thinking of, Dood. They’re making aluminum scales for the Native5, and they look fantastic!
Yes that’s is! I can’t wait, they’re not out yet are they?
I've been loving my N5 Salt in magnacut the more I use it! Great video dood, as usual!
I kidd u not...if you file down the front finger lil bit& sand it smooth, makes the handle petfect for large hands
Native 5 vs Para 3 vs Benchmade Bugout vs Hogue Deka
have the native 5 salt, with magnacut... best knife I've ever had
Purchased the MagnaCut Native 5. Love it!
If they made this with the Manix 2 lock I would buy and carry this knife all the time.
Interesting, maybe I should take apart my Maxamet one and clean it. It’s super stiff
@@doodysdaggers I wonder if they only pack grease in the Salt versions?
I have to agree on the blade shape. I love this type of leaf blade shape - not aesthetically, but functionally I love it. Wharnies are too straight for general applications, especially if the blade to handle isn't angled slightly. Wharnies are too hyped in the knife community right now. Unless you are solely cutting boxes open, a slight belly is much more useful in a wide range of applications
Yep exactly! Wharnies look super cool but aren’t the most practical 🤠
Love my lil native just ordered the native 5
Love my native. Size, weight, blade shape, ergos are all top notch. I’m not crazy about the back lock, but otherwise it’s perfection
The backlock is perfect for utility tools and one of the stronger more durable and reliable locks. The BM axis lock looks fancier but is much more flimsy and not as durable.
Spyderco just gets the job done right.
The Shaman is part of the Native line up.
Applied Weapons Tech has made aluminum scales for the native 5. I’ve got a couple sets coming and if they’re anything like the rest of their work, I’m sure it’ll be a home run
I got some!! They’re fantastic
I have one in Magnacut that I carry every day
Would be curious to get your take on the manix 2 lw.
So easy to take apart and clean
Breaking news: local man discovers uses of drop points
Just got my first native 5 lw recently. Great knife!
On blade shapes. I like the Smock's or Chris Reeve's Insingo
It's a mini, lock-back Shaman. They're great knives but I carry my SHaman over my Native5 most days.
You know typically im not big on frn but those green scales are pretty sick, ive wanted a native with the compression lock for a while🔥🔥
My thoughts exactly, usually not an FRN fan, or a bright green fan, but this knife does it for me
Love the green
I love the look of the Native 5. If i buy one it will be in maxamet.
the back lock pretty much kills it for me so ill stick with my sages...they are very close to each other though...and im ngl, the mini pallet to hold the post-its is dope haha
Haha thanks I’ve had that pallet sticky note thing for years. When it runs out I’ll have to get more sticky notes and use the same pallet
Dude, it took me years to finally get a Spyderco, and after 3 weeks of carrying one daily... I FINALLY get it.
They're just workhorses, plain and simple. I literally could not ask for a better knife to do absolutely everything I need to do on a daily basis.
Love to hear it!!
Yeah id love to get the native 5 CF version!! Someday doods! Someday!
That one is so epic, the CF and s90v..
I've found we have really similar taste in knives. Just ordered a Native 5 Fluted CF/S90V!
I’m so jealous!!!
@@doodysdaggers really appreciated this video and your thoughts on it, bro!
Don’t own one yet but I’m getting my father in law the s90v Carbon Fiber version for Christmas. I’ll order it in a couple days. If I like it I’ll get me one also! As always good video man. Keep it up!
That one is soooo epic!! The ultimate version
@@doodysdaggers yeah man the CF on it is some of the best looking out there. Although a maxamet or Magnacut with some AWT’s is also very tempting!
I think the para 3 salt is better than the native 5 salt. Both are great knives and I own and carry both! 👌
I look for an identical green lc200n errday on secondary lol
You convinced me - I just placed an order for a Spyderco Native 5 LW.
Yessssss 😁
Not sure if I agree with you that it's the best ever. I do agree that it's a great knife. Only little knife I like or can tolerate in hand. Respect. D
What do you think is the best EDC knife? It’s a super hard decision I know, that’s why I said it’s “one of the best” not “the best”
@@doodysdaggers for me it's still in the Spydie family. A toss up between the Manix2 and the Shaman, with the Shaman having a slight edge mainly because I have big azz hands
In my work I have to use the butt of the knife handle several times a day. My expensive plastic handled bugout and 2 spydercos have to stay home.
Handling 100+ spydercos a day 4 days a week, Yes spyderco is one of the best production companies. There are some things here and there like blade play/centering issues, but otherwise all ✅
If you need more convincing AWT has scales in the works for them 🤙
Omg I can’t wait!!!!
The only back lock knife i like.
Nothing really touches the Para 3 for me. But that's just a personal preferance
@@doodysdaggers That also sounds really cool. I was thinking about the native 5 magancut.
are those plastic handles on these knives lol it looks likes it lo
@@dayannahkali yeah definitely. I’m just saying it doesn’t even have the potential to get great edge retention
Love my native 5
im not a fan of spiderco knifes i dont like how they have a hole in the blade but i get it lol
I agree with all of this. Great edc
Good shit doody
I should’ve snagged one in the seconds sale, next time…
Yes it’s perfect for running or working out!
i have the native 1 in s35 i like it but don't carry it enough. i have too many
If they made a choiless version I’d be down but the cutting edge is too small for the overall size. At that point I’d rather rock a dragonfly or mini native.
I have not gotten one yet. Love the Delica though.
So you convinced me to get one. Been handling it for 2 weeks now. What pocket clip would you recommend for deep carry? I'm torn between the MXG with a cutout or a Lynch NW.
Awesome man, how are you liking it?
I really like MXG personally, but I know Lynch makes great clips too. I think it just comes down to looks
@@Laglagpaddy yeah MXG is great, I think you’ll be happy with them.
Glad you’re digging the knife!!
Hey brother, did you end up grabbing a Magnacut version of the Native 5?
No I got one in Maxamet
My lc200n has an black standard clip. Yours is not? And yes the native 5 is amazing. I carry it the most for edc. And no worries on the beach where I live.
You’re right, I had forgotten. Mine came with a black one but I had switched it at some point
@@doodysdaggers looks great 👍🏼👍🏼
File down the front plastic finger guard
What are the scales on the Shaman? They look nice!
They’re made of Terotuff, not sure where they’re from, a friend gave them to me
Ok cool, thanks!@@doodysdaggers
