- Many of the most interresting or grand designs for buildings ever concieved have remained just that - designs, an idea in someone's head, or a drawing on paper. In this video I'll showcase five examples of that.

If you decide to continue this series,there is a interesting but not well known fact that during ww1 plans,art and models were drawn up for a Sarajevo church of monumental scale in honour of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. It was never realised due to the war and is really obscure,shame considoring it would have dwarfed many cathedrals

MEMORY CULTURE
Immediately after the attack, a simple memorial plaque was first placed at the so-called “murder site” near the famous Latin Bridge. The Bosnian inscription read in German translation:
"28.VI.1914
The heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Duchess Sophie Hohenberg suffered martyrs at this crossroads. "
In 1916, on behalf of the city administration, a memorial for the murdered heir apparent was erected on the Latin Bridge, near the site of the assassination, according to plans by the Hungarian academic sculptor and architect Prof. Jenő Bory (1879-1959) and on June 28, 1917 inaugurated on the occasion of the third anniversary of the attack.
The monument made of Silesian granite was 12 meters high. It consisted of an altar-like base with a niche for storing devotional objects and a bronze medallion with relief images of the two murder victims, on top of two towering fluted columns with the heraldic reliefs and bronze crowns of the heir apparent.
The monument was removed in 1918 after the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy and the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Parts of it are now in the Art Gallery Bosnia & Herzegovina and in the Museum Sarajevo (Muzej Sarajeva) located directly on the Latin Bridge.
In the Muzej Sarajeva, which is dedicated to the Habsburg era of the city (1878-1918), the memory of the attack and the assassins occupies a large space. Among other things, the Remington revolver used by Princip is kept here.
The Latin Bridge (Latinska ćuprija) was renamed Princip Bridge (Principov most) in honor of the main bomber in 1918 and was only given its original name again in 1992 during the Bosnian War.
Jenő Bory also developed the plans for a major project from 1917, which, however, was never realized: the “Atonement monument in Sarajevo for Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg”. It was a complex of several buildings: the "Archduke Franz Ferdinand Memorial Church" with the "Sophienheim".
As can be seen from the project description, the planned, mighty three-aisled memorial church was to be built in neo-Romanesque style, “to provide seating for 4,000 people and, thanks to a square tower at the intersection of the main and side aisles, a monumental appearance on the outside and a great spatial effect on the inside with extremely effective central lighting. "
A semicircular arcade building at the entrance of the church was intended "as a hall of fame for the main characters of the world war and for the immense number of our soldiers who sacrificed their lives on the battlefields of this war for rulers and fatherland."
In the apse of the church, “the kneeling figures of the illustrious couple should be placed in front of a small altar and perpetuate the position that the high deceased took an hour before the tragic death at the service”.
A monumental building was to be attached to the church in memory of Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg and named after her: This “Sophienheim” was intended as a youth home for the male youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for students and workers.
The construction project was under the “very highest protectorate” of Emperor Charles and Empress Zita, and the President of the financing committee was Chief Chamberlain Konrad Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Schillingfürst.
The construction costs were estimated at around three million crowns. The project should be realized through "generous" donations from the people of Austria-Hungary as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was seen as "a matter of honor for all strata of the population" to contribute to the creation of these monumental buildings.
There are still a lot of megaprojects that have forgotten, they're maybe hundreds of them, including the New York Stock Exchange Tower ( 546m tall by roof height ) and the 990-acre Manhattan Airport ( by William Zeckendorf )

I don't know if you'll ever revisit this subject, but if you do you should totally check out what was supposed to be the congress building in Mexico City, the dictator Porfirio Diaz had a plan for a monumental neoclassical building and construction started but the revolution halted the project, in the end the new government utilized the incomplete structure to create the "monumento a la revolución" that still stands today and is quite unique, it's also technically the tallest triumphal arch in the world, it even has a mausoleum, a museum and an observation deck.

And that's the sad part, we got the short end of the stick, but I guess it could always be worse...
You should consider making a third part mentioning the Vienna Kaiserforum, which would've been the largest palace on earth.
We had so must glory and prestige back then, now we made brutalist and glass atrocities and call them "the future".
The fallacies of glory and prestige are precisely why architecture went a different direction. Classical and Neo-Classical architecture are temples to empire, death and destruction. WWII permanently marked the end of trying to live in the past and the millennia of suffering it had wrought. Classically inspired buildings are now the domain of authoritarianism and oppression.

Another big building that wasn’t built is the planned Mexican Congress building, complete with a copper dome. The copper dome was actually built and still stands to this day in the mexican capital.
It was to be called Palacio Legislativo Federal
I've seen that first palace in my dreams. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to build it today.

Very interesting but somewhat reminiscent of the Neuschwanstein Castle that created so much economic problems to the German state of Bavaria. Those projects regarding massive Palaces or villas were simply too expensive....

Instead of building a royal palace on the Acropolis in Athens I think reconstructing the whole complex to the way it looked in ancient times would have been a better idea and by now after the passage of nearly 150 years it would start to be losing it's brand new look!

In 1640 king Christian IV of Denmark-Norway started building the large "Church of Santa Anna" (better known as Santa Anna Rotunda) in a new part of Copenhagen. Due to war and lack of money the project war soon stopped and in 1660 it was abandoned by the new king. Though we don't know much about the proportions and how it would have looked like it would have been substantial in size. Some speculate that the dome would have reached higher than the Saint Peters Basilica in Rome.

06:36 man this is why i think I've always found obelisks ominous. It's like they're residences of some lovecraftian diety.They really unsettle me. I'm a hardcore fan of ancient greek-roman classical architecture and ancient Indian architecture (check out their ancient temples- the stone carving work is insane )

There is yet another version of the White House that was proposed near the start of the city. It would of been an exact replica of the Versailles in France. It was considered too ambitions and garish by George Washington, so a new design was made where only the central part of Versailles would of been replicated to a more modest degree.
All the projects are fascinating, but I had no idea that a serious proposal for an enlarged White House was put forward. I'm glad they did not do it. It was a palace, and the president should not live in a palace.

I love an outdoor, marble gothich column pathwalk with a nice formal garden. I'm thinking mixing elements. I want something new and traditional so I want a marble house of mixed elements. I shouldn't have to pay for it all myself, because I don't use it all myself. Everyone wants to come over, and everyone wants it over the top! I think it's fairest if it's half and half, like the creme de la creme!
Ours is going to be a marble palace in the center of the Garden, in the center of the city Eden, which is also the Imperial City. It has to represent Adam and Eve's union in the garden, but it's allegorical and metaphorical. Knowledge! The beauty is mathematical. The embellishments to the facade need to draw from the ability people have attained from working with stone. It will be a multi colored house utilizing multiple types of marble. The statues will be guilded, they will be donated to us by the guilds! The gargoyles will be utilitarian in function, and their mouths breath water away from fear of flooding. My favorite style is Baroque, I'm not really too big a fan of Rococo!

I'm glad the new White House wasn't built. Meridian Hill Park, known colloquially as Malcolm X Park is a beautiful place used by many people from the surrounding neighborhoods.
I wish it was built. I mean, there are so many parks in DC already.

And those plans were amazing! As evil as Hitler and the Nazis were, they were brilliant architects. It’s a huge shame that their designs weren’t built, then the Nazis overthrown, with Germania being the capital of a democratic Germany.

The reason this channel will never get popular is because the creator cannot speak English intelligibly and either refuses to admit it or does not know and makes no effort to improve his pronunciation. There are no language issues just nordic accent and poor intonation. It can be understood but not without extra attention to decipher his mumbling.

I had no problems understanding him and have lived in the USA all my life. But who cares? Whether or not people like his accent or channel is only his problem, not yours or mine. Watch something else if you can’t understand accented English.
I like his accent. If you think he's mumbling, you may want to get your hearing tested. Not trying to be snarky here. Seriously, people who are becoming hard of hearing don't realize it at first and will often start complaining that others are mumbling.
