    I was an Army 96D in the 80's and worked with the resources that the platforms came back with. The SR-71/YF-12 you're with was converted to a trainer. The hump is not for the WSO it is for the instructor. The normal configuration for the Blackbird has the RSO right behind the pilot.
    That definitely was not the APU. The Blackbird is started by two separate "Buicks" which were external V8's just for starting up the engines.

      The YF-12A backseater was a Fire Control Officer(FCO), M-21 was Launch Control Officer(LCO), SR-71 was Recon Systems Officer(RSO) and the A-12 didnt have a back seater(save for the titanium goose trainer with the J75 engines).

    Saw it the first time at The Canadian International Airshow in Toronto late 80s I think, it did four passes & the last pass was incredible, it set off car alarms all over the parking lot...what a beautiful plane.

    God MA, you walking around the crew chiefs while they're working around moving hoses and equipment gives me so much anxiety. Like when I used to do maintenance and the pilots or commanders would walk in the hanger to watch us work or ask us general questions, I would be on edge because I always had to triple check no one touched anything or moved something that wasn't supposed to be moved, even down to rechecking my tools and their placements because of fear of having to write up a lost tool report and ground an aircraft to investigate finding it.

    I wonder if it looks so cool because it was required to achieve the goals of the air craft. It if the engineers just wanted it to look bad ass. Literally probably the coolest looking air craft ever built

    Great video, Ryan! I saw an old video with a pilot flying the SR-71 and he said it doesn't turn very well at all due to the high speed and that any necessary turns need to be started well in advance. In fact, for the SR-71 to make a 180⁰ turn while flying at mach 3, it would take 10 minutes and the turning radius would stretch from Dayton, OH to Chicago, IL!! What an awesome machine! 🫡 🇺🇲

    I do that at work, when a guy is working with something loud, I go over and say “you need to take that somewhere else, it’s too loud and I don’t want to hear it “. Then just walk off. They have no idea what to think.

    I like this format.
    There are lots of things to nerd out about in this video, but I like to think about the pneumatic forces, and how the weight of the jet will be the same as the contact patch times the PSI of the bags.

    This version is a trainer, typical Blackbird seating was pilot and RSO directly behind the pilot. Great video! I was fortunate enough to get very close to the A-12 on the USS Intrepid in NYC.

    How similar is flying something like this compared to an F-16 ? Like if you can fly a fighter jet can you fly pretty much anything?

    • @MaxAfterburnerusa

      Just guessing here but the stability of a fighter jet would be better and more forgiving than an SR-71

      Actually the trainer made from two planes was designated as an SR-71C and wasn’t actually used very much. This is one of the two SR-71Bs which were specifically built for training. I worked on the flight line at Beale AFB from 1972 to 1975 so would have seen this aircraft fly many times.

    Stop saying it's black. Everyone says it's black. It should be called the "Bluebird". They were finished/painted dark blue It was for heat dissipation and to camouflage ot from the night sky. Also, that plane is an earlier trainer mutt. The WSO sat directly behind the pilot in an SR-71. (Originally designated Archangel/A-12/YF-12 and actually RS-71......lobbied and changed to SR-71. It wasn't a speech flub by Lyndon Johnson. Do some research.)
    Stop saying diamond, muscle and cool. You're not the best public speaker and this video should have been much more concise, edited and non-repetitive. Still, a very interesting up close video. You left out how much this is still costing us and that the titanium was imported for "pizza ovens". Nothing like titanium pizza ovens. Very healthy. WTF were they thinking. Ahh - Money.

    • @wizardwingman3654
      @wizardwingman3654 4 місяці тому +1

      Sure looks black to me, do you have any evidence to back up your assertion that it is blue? Per T.O. SR-71-3 the color is C-144 Black (Emissivity Black). What’s your specification reference?

    • @UhhhhhnooOOo00oO
      @UhhhhhnooOOo00oO 4 місяці тому

      @wizardwingman3654 Yes. Do even a 10 second Google search on it. From years of experience, I don't post untruthful comments for you. Truthful and not intended for you. Since, this is all you do and I was bored in the "shitter", it behooves you to have some knowledgeable on the subject. Not that I give a crap about something that cost taxpayers billions up billions of dollars and still is costing us. So in summation, what country really won? Rhetorical. Is that from Mercedes, like 040 black. WTF? From 3 pilots that flew the damn plane, that said, "It's actually blue.". A very dark blue.". "The SR-71 was designed to minimize its radar cross-section, an early attempt at stealth design. Finished aircraft were painted a dark blue, almost black, to increase the emission of internal heat and to act as camouflage against the night sky. The dark color led to the aircraft's nickname "Blackbird".". Does it get any clearer? Rhetorical again. "The exterior was painted a very dark blue color, so dark it actually looks black. This color was selected to increase the emission of internal heat and to offer camouflage at night, not to mention its body was designed to reduce its radar signature, so it could hide in the “black” on radar.". The M-21 was bare metal. Some have some red on them as well. The NASA one was all white with some blue. Although all blue is black to you.
