"These guys can impart a _little_ Bit of force when they hit you..." _Sends a 2000 pound wooden contraption flying after instantly breaking it in half_
Ugh. Ya the enemy ai was programed so annoyingly. Essentially each enemy of the same 'faction' (inconsistent) shares the same process which results in enemies being very inconsistent in their atracks, even when they surround you as they try to target a piece that exists a mile away instead of the one in range. It's literally patchwork if-when ai with added rng delays to make it as it is. (This is me simplifying it, there's alot more in the game's ai that I ain't giving it credit for.) A solution (not nessarily a good one) to your engines is making 4 pistons powered by the same enemy and it should make you able to power it, albiet a bit inconsistent. Alternatively, you can have the two enemies face each other when attacking, but the ai may still glitch out (cause patchwork targetting system) If you keep the 1 piston idea you can have something come to the enemy's left or right to force a turn signal and does whatever you need it to elsewhere. Having something come from behind it could stimulate an attack to happen. But yeah good attempt and design, just the ai in the game makes the faults exist as it does.
Imagine you're a soldier for the king and you've heard legends of a friendly camp raided and kidnapped, only to wake up one day and find a machine of death powered by 8 knights locked in claws upside down inside of it...
That's a really nice idea ! I would have never thought about this myself... and that's a pretty good result as well ! I just wanted to say that I really like this vids, because they use real technical systems and so I learn a lot of things watching them. Keep going with them, I love your work ! (I also like other vids, but I definitively love the ones on besieged)
Only even seen gameplay of besiege, never played it, but the lil halberd dudes are my favorite because of how endearingly simple they are, glad to see them getting some attention
I almost wonder if instead of the direct reciprocating motion you tried at the start, you might be able to use something like the mechanism in the automatic winding works of an antique watch. These are mechanisms designed to have a little spinning weight within the watch, and then convert the spin into a winding action that keeps the mainspring wound. This way simply walking around will slowly add a little wind to the watch and at the very least extend the period a full wind can last. These automatic winding mechanisms are special because they are designed to wind the spring no matter which way the counterweight spins. So a reciprocating motion would end up winding the watch just like a full rotation in either direction. I'm not an expert with this I've just seen this concept before and thought maybe something like that would work better and not run into issues with timing or binding up.
I still want to see a mechanical implementation of a binary addition calculator. Still have no idea how you would build it, but it would be a cool concept!
Use a steering block at 1.125 speed and a timer block to turn it for 1 second, it’ll turn 90 degrees, repeat for an easy crankshaft Most of my engines use this since its basically impossible in any other way
You could use a piston to block a piston in the UP position, when you want that side's wheel to stop moving. That way, gravity and a bit of aid from the other enemy's movement, will lead to the piston getting back enough to be re-engaged by the enemy.
not gonna lie, it wasn't until 11:22 when you used the grabber that i actually believed this could work. granted you wouldn't have uploaded if it didn't work but i was still in disbelief. it was brilliant watching you trying to work around the human element of enemies not being in sync.
Which enemy are you? I'm definitely the archer enemy.
Ima Bomb Sheep
Why are you the archer?
I'm the one with the DOOT DOOT.
Feeling like an enemy airship rn
Definitely the acher because i like sniping people

I doubt that wood weighs that much

A enemy powered car. The most Reid Captain thing ive heard this week
I read the title as “Making an engine powered engine” and thought Reid had finally defeated engines
He hath transcended to the ethereal realm
"We are only making it stronger "
The soldiers probably
A machine powered by nothing but pure, unfiltered hostility
We did it lads. A literal "automatic" Hand crank engine! We engineered so hard we went back to basics!
Its come full circle

"Impart a little bit of force"
*Gets thrown 3 miles*
Conspiracy theory: Reid captain is nilered
But.. he is..
I get this comment at least once a day now
wait is he
0:05” now these guys can impart a little bit of force when they hit you”
He says as the vehicle gets sent into next week
The phrase, “now I directly braced the two flywheels together.” That is some mad scientist speak there.

imagine using this in an actual level and having a more conventional 'drone' that flies out and grabs the enemies for it

You should try to make a space tank in KSP
That is extremely interesting, I'll look into it
ah yes, lets use the kerbals as ammo :]

I swear to god, this man is so smart hes going to create a fusion reactor that uses Cheeseburgerss to make Power.
Seriously get this man a nobel prize
You can unironically make it work since nearly all the atoms inside a cheesburger has less protons than iron
He has to stop using braces in rotating parts, they are coded to not rotate faster than 7 rotations per sec.
yes

Thank god this dude's only good at games or we'd all be screwed
I read the title as an engine powered engine. What would that even look like?
Throwing engines at the pistons and using that to drive a car.

I haven't played Besiege for literally years. The algo gave me this video.
It is giving me some tingles
You've advanced so far in your engineering you have looped back around to using slave labor
Use a steering block at 1.125 speed and a timer block to turn it for 1 second, it’ll turn 90 degrees, repeat for an easy crankshaft
Most of my engines use this since its basically impossible in any other way
I like how he spends hours devoted to just bring us joy Good job love your videos
That's a crazy idea, can't wait to see this

Me when the enemy is actually a friend (this is the start to a very long and drawn out love story)
putting the disc here if he changes it lol
Why would I ever change that?!
since enemies target other types of enemies. wonder if you can make a trojan horse?
sorry if random comment btw

I love your besiege videos!
Thanks!
No wait, the enemies ARE the engine. You've made a car with a differential and a direct drive axle XD
your voice is so chill
I'm pretty sure that the versions that had the enemies stand on pistons was more like an amplifying linkage rather than a motive force in themselves.
RC- they impart a little bit of force when they hit me

War Crimes? No, fuel

Maybe you could use a grabber to grab one of the pistons? This could stop that engine temporarily and allow for steering.
