I never minded the Who's being flawed in this version, as I thought it was an interesting twist on the story. Both the Grinch and Whos needed to learn a lesson, and only when both of them came to their respective realizations would the cycle of hatred come to an end.

Plus, it's not like the book comes right out and says that the Whos always understood Christmas all along. We are never shown any scenes from the point of view of the Whos, so, for all we know, maybe they WERE greedy and commercial and it was the Grinch's theft that caused them to come to a new realization. It's certainly not the first thing one would infer from reading the book, but it's a valid interpretation IMO, since we don't know for sure.

The Grinch has one of my favourite Ultra-Quick jokes. Where he's being relentlessly fed desserts as people encourage him, and then suddenly there's an Einstein-esque Scientist who spoons some green goo into his mouth whilst saying "Zis is NOT pudding", and Carrey just manages to hurriedly say "WHAT IS IT?!" in a voice of genuine panic, before being silenced with more puddings.

The detail about the Grinch originally being colorless is a lot more amusing when you remember that the Grinch was voiced by Boris Karloff in the 1966 animated movie. Which means that there are *two* famous literary characters that everyone envisions as green because of iconic performances by Boris Karloff.

There's a lot of crazy behind the scenes drama that happened on this movie. I heard from a crew member who worked on it say that when Ron Howard showed up in Grinch makeup Jim Carrey at first didn't recognize him and thought he was being replaced by another actor and had a meltdown on set.

Carrey also admitted that he had a meltdown after his first day because of how stressed and uncomfortable he was, and Brian Grazer’s solution was to hire a CIA agent who specialized in torture resistance to give Carrey some pointers. Even better, according to Carrey, those pointers amounted to smoking and eating as much as he could and punching himself in the thigh to distract himself from how uncomfortable he was.

Fun Fact: Execs hated the Grinch design. They thought no one would know it was Jim. According to producers (grain of salt) they proved that folks would know it was Jim by showing silent Grinch footage with different actors in the suit to Kindergarten kids. Here in Latin America we also had a similar situation, Dr. Seuss' books aren't very well known, though most of its animated adaptations were dubbed and shown on TV for many years, I actually remember watching the original Grinch special back in '98 or '99, though the dub changed his name from Grinch to Odeón (though the live-action movie and the 2018 Illumination film kept his name in English), and while the live-action Grinch movie wasn't a huge hits in cinemas as it was in the U.S., thanks to it reruns on TV every Christmas season it has become a classic alongside other movies like Home Alone 1 & 2, Jingle all the Way and Elf
I also add that the Latin American Spanish dub is very quotable, especially since the Grinch himself was dubbed by Jim Carrey's usual dub VA, Mario Castañeda, better known for voicing Goku in Dragon Ball Z. Mario still voices Jim to this day, like in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movies

I will say in defense of giving the Grinch a backstory, is that the whole 'Please don't ask why, no one knows the reason' is a blatant lie, as the original story does show why the Grinch hated Christmas: The Whos were unintentionally obnoxious about it and were really loud. And obviously for a live action film they couldn't just leave it at 'The Grinch hates noise pollution'.
Inconsistency was something Dr. Suess was quite consistent about, amusingly enough, like in the special Grinch Night, a prequel to the original Grinch, the Grinch is shown to have magic powers and size-changing abilities which he obviously didn't have in the original. Speaking of Grinch Night, I think it's fair to say the writers of the 2000 film took some inspiration from that, with the Whos living in fear of the Grinch.

There aren't a ton of movies I have like this because not everything is for everybody; however, this _is_ one of those movies where if someone says that they don't like it then I get very suspicious of them. To me that is one of those "yeah, I don't think we can really get along" flags. Maybe it is just that they lack whimsy or just have a very different sense of humor. Either way it is probably a sign we aren't the pair to hang out much...

I have never met a person in real life who said they disliked this movie. My speculation is that its because we are British and we did not grow up with the 70s cartoons (generally speaking). Since they are more of an American cultural thing, it makes sense for Americans to be more split over this movie. I suppose we would be the same if, say, The Snowman got a major motion pitcure whereas I dont think Americans would care all that much

I’m American and you can say this is somewhat true. I HATED the movie when it came out because I had the Chuck Jones animation to compare it too. To me, the 2000 Grinch was too obnoxious and over the top. He wasn’t the Grinch from Chuck Jones who was more reserved in the way they showcased his distain. He was charming but not scary or disturbing to look at. He was sly and intelligent in what he did.
Jim Carrey is MASSIVELY different. I will saw I think many people do see this movie in a big nostalgia lens. A lot of the Grinch humor does not work but I will say I have grown to appreciate it more.
Also, the Snowman is very popular here. I don’t think I’d like a live action version - they’ll fuck it up somehow and put in modern humor and crap jokes.
Kind of like how the 2000’s Grinch did to be honest…😏

Still, both are leagues above the illumination one. Thats ine hell of a flaccid take - who thought it was a good idea to make the grinch a tumblr millenial?
