MULTIPLE SWITCHES CAUGHT ON CAMERA | What do Dissociative Episodes Really Look Like?

  • Dissociative episodes aren't things that are talked about very often, so here's a little video about our experiences! Recently, we have had a little bit of dissociation around switches (especially when people are trying to stay out), so there's a bit of that included. These are some moments that we happened to catch, and we planned to record dissociative episodes for a video like this, so these are pretty candid lol. And in Devon/Ivan's portion, we're just holding the tablet, so pardon any shaky camera moments 😆

"Switching on camera is like changing clothes in front of people." Thank you for this! I've tried to explain why we're not comfy showing switches on camera to people, and they don't understand how vulnerable of a state it puts you in. Thank you all for being brave enough to show this! -Imogen

When Beater brought up how switching on camera is like changing in front of someone I really connected with that statement. It's always felt like something really personal to me so when one of us switches and I'm coming back into things and I realize we were in public when it happened I always feel suddenly really shy and withdrawn because its just awkward for me.
Once again it's great you continue to talk about and show people these things about DID because it gets a lot of information out there and helps people learn. You guys are all doing great keep up the good work!

Rapid switching is on of the most uncomfortable things I have ever experienced. Usually mine are caused by trying to process and remember trauma.
I really related to this video. I get these huge headaches and super sleepy after a dissociative episode. Sometimes I have an extremely difficult time talking because an alter might've just woke up and doesn't know what just happened. Or sometimes some of my alters have very little experience fronting in front of others and simply have the social skills of a 1 year old

My best friend has DID and in the beginning I just thought she was going between accents and third person at random but we were young and I didn't understand. I later realised that it was her but also wasn't. She has as far as I have seen 6 different personalities and she has some subtle triggers like touching something dirty or something dirty touching her. At that point Becca comes out and Becca has a strong northern accent that my best friend doesn't have and can't copy even if she tries. Surprisingly she likes me-well all of them do which is kinda weird to understand cos most of her personalities are antisocial except Jeff. Jeff if a 4 year old who doesn't understand the world but is very outgoing and trusts to easily. But back on topic, I can understand where you're coming from and I appreciate you doing this video ❤️

I'll tell you what ... unless we know someone very well personally, we just don't know what they are going through. My heart just breaks for the huge numbers of people who were abused so badly that they developed DID to survive said abuse. You know, it's possible that a person we've gotten to know well may STILL be unable, or too scared to tell us they have DID. This video (& Nin's who is British) are very helpful in educating & raising both general & specific awareness in people ... people who then might be able to help someone who's dissociating. Maybe all they can do to help in that moment is to silently pray for a person who is dissociating, but it's still a loving & compassionate move & response. I'm praying faithfully for complete & fast healing for everyone living with DID.

Thank you for showing your switches. Bc mine seem to be the same. Very subtle that my therapist doesn't always catch...bc most the time nobody says there's been a change....we're relatively new, so still learning alot.
My question, since this is so new is, 1) how did all you tell the 'host' your names?? 2) how did the 'host' find your inner world...if you have one. All we *I see is a big Movie theater where everybody is sitting in their seats, facing the screen. Most prominent people in our life have the front rows and so on...but 'I' the primary host at this time don't see us talking to each other, which seems strange.

If you can't talk to them in the inner world you could try leaving notes, using notes (digital or physical) to do things like Interviewing the others, a poll on what rules and communications may be necessary, etc. The more communication generally the better.

Both of these episodes are very similar to some of ours, interesting!
One type of dissociative episode that's been happening to us lately a lot, is rapid switching plus brain fog like symptoms (the inability to think, or grasp words, or concentrate, or forgetting things you've just done or were just thinking). I don't know how "real" the body or world feels in that state because of the constant switching and forgetfulness.(Next time it happens I hope to be able to observe that at least)
Anyways, I have two questions - has anything similar to this one I'm describing happened to you? And, do you ever experience rapid switching, if so, how often?
Thank you very much for this video! Really looking forward for that Q&A!

I suffer from bouts of extreme depression, anxiety, and a few other personal things, and it's very strange listening to other people talk about how their mental illness aspects affect them. I dislike being around other people when I'm feeling anxious because I feel like they can get in my head and just s e e me. It's very comforting to find another person (or people -sorry I'm terrible with terminology) that experiences similar feelings.
Sidenote: my cats actually can tell when I'm starting to spiral and they'll curl up on my head (they're tiny) and around my stomach to help me be more grounded and positive.

I'm currently writing a novel about a girl with DID. It's really wonderful to see people allowing themselves to switch in front of a camera even though it can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. But, may I ask, is it possible that an alter comes out at night only and you don't even know you have DID?

I have autism and a history of trauma. These types of episodes are triggered by extreme stress and being tired/overwhelmed. I have a stem behavior where I pull my skin off my fingers, I know it’s terribly disgusting, but it is an attempt to ground myself back into my body. So I started to use other more pleasant sensory stimulations to bring myself back and then allow myself to zone out in a quiet place for as long as I need to until I can refocus. It just is what it is. Sometimes you just have to give yourself that space… And sometimes allow yourself to disconnect and disassociate because it’s hard being in this world :-)

Dissociation can last for a long period of time. I went through a dissociative episode for about a week for the first time and lost my memory for the entire week and still can’t recall it. I don’t always feel like the same person in a sense but not to an extreme which this makes sense to me and experience zone outs too!

    • @Flusterette
      @Flusterette 2 роки тому +3

Absence seizures (AS) can look a lot like this, & may even have some similar brain mechanisms at some points. AS are experienced when the brain is over-stimulated.
AS would by definition need to be a form of experiential dissociation. But all signs & symptoms would be limited to the diagnostic criteria of AS.
What's different with dissociative disorders (DDs) is the history of trauma, identity alterations, & other unique things that cluster in with DDs that kind of categorize these experiences as different than AS.
Also, DD experiences can be related to drastic hypo-arousal of the nervous system, which contrasts with AS's over-stimulation requirement.
The full patient history, the difference in presentations that oscillate with DDs, & the subjective experiences, & how the body presents during these episodes would make distinguishing DD episodes from AS pretty simple.

I have been trying to figure this out to be sure I know my experiences matches the symptoms before I talk to a therapist about how I feel. I have been going through a lot this past week, life changing stuff. I dissociated pretty hard while out in public today, and allowed myself to go into a store without realizing something was not proper on my person. Something I should have realized. What you said about getting situated in your body is what it felt like for me. Also this video confirmed the wavy feeling in my head that i get sometimes may be connected. It is something i have been wondering is a sign of dissociating. 2020 is all about clarity right? I think what happened to me today and this past week has been proof enough for me to go see someone and get this sorted. Thanks for this video. I am tried of fighting against myself. EDIT: i didn't realize how triggering this video would be.

Wow, I had no idea about this, and this video is jam-packed with information. The switches are interesting. I believe it is critical to understand this and not be embarrassed about it. because a supportive friend could assist in communication with the alters - can alters has different opinions about your friends?
the switch between Craig and Beater is very very interesting. the body gestures, the stance, the look.
Is the rubbing of the forehead and the closing of the eyes a sign of a switch? or isn't this always the case?
I'm guessing Beater isn't a big fan of glasses?
"Switching on camera is like changing clothes in front of people." I totally get it. but it depends on what "people" .. really.
that's how I see it. People accept a person's personality traits when they like them. like "this person has a short fuse when it comes to long conversations." or " this person dress funny... But I like him..." that sort of thing.
If a true friend had someone with DID as a friend, I would say yes. To me, that's like winning a group of friends. in a single person

Awww hugs 🫂 so sorry. We live with these nearly daily ATM. It's so so exhausting 😭 wish we could help....
We are fairly new system. Undergoing the dx process.
Coming to terms with stuff ECT after years of losing everyone to stigmas and thinking we are fake and lying or demon ext set us back big time...
We been alert for a few years I would say but. Body's nearly 31... stigmas and people made us hide A LOT for saftey.
So it's hindered our journey to recovery and diogosis but we are so close now. I can taste the freedom of healing. Sorry, I'm dissociative now, a lot actually for while, system is a bit Mia. Idk why or what up..
But wanted to say we have really enjoyed meeting you guys so to speak. Thank you for sharing the vulnerability of dissociation episodes. We will continue to follow and engage... Oh ..
Haha that's why I started this comment 😂 that's what i was gonna say lol
Do cats actually help.? Almost every system I have seen so far now on UA-cam has cars to ground them? Does it work! Myself always been more dog person. But we see so many systems with cats? We want to know if there is anything to this.
    Or just coincidence.
We are looking into getting a trauma dog 🐶 but me myself tonight have been finding new systems to follow and seen cats as a main thing for grounding? So curious now..
Sorry for the babble it always happens when switchy and dissociative ugh 😩
Sorry long msg 🙂 I can't not filter the brain when like this

In my list of diagnoses, I have major depressive disorder (some psychotic symptoms, a lot of dissociative symptoms, some hypomania symptoms). I also have PTSD, OCD, General anxiety disorder, phobias and panic disorder. Aaand I have characteristics from three different personality disorders (BPD, Paranoid personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder). So yea, it's fun lol

We're a rather covert osdd system, and for us when the alter at front (often me, host) dissociates, I kind of get shoved back and another alter takes front while I just. Dissolve into the void in the background (but still at front!). Ig it's to make us look like we're not dissociating? It's really weird haha, so most of the time when an alter actually is in a dissociative like in your video, but we have to like function, someone else takes the lead. This makes the dissociation feel even more weird

as a person with DID as well I would not recommend higlighting those personalities so much as it tease the illness even more. The healing process is of course about acknowledging the personalities, but letting them create themselves so much and labeling them with names makes the disease harder to manage. It tears you apart even more : "Okay, what am I gonna be today? Cathelyn, Samantha, Jules or Roger" "now Roger is speaking through me, but I feel like Cathelyn" no: you are you. Stick to yourself, create yourself. Take care :)

    • @rc7029

Umm.. it’s easier to label so you can understand who’s out. And who’s doing what. No we’re not one person and as a person with DID you should get that lol. I tried not labeling then realized at a point in time I basically had to.

Hello, I'm really just searching for information. I was diagnosed with borderline personality which I'm like one hundred percent certain is a false diagnosis. The treatment I had before sort of helped but I'm certain I was just under one fragmented alter at that time and I find I'm able to handle situations in a manner where...you know its stable. However, the unrest in my mind is unsettling. I find myself feeling fuzzy in the head, especially between the eyes, always chalked it up to migraine aura. However, I never get the migraine itself. I'll feel out of touch. Numb. Unfocused. Sometimes I actually slip into an accent. Sometimes I'll say and od things that seem out of character. However, I chalk it up to an aura. Does this seem similar to you when you are going through switches? There also needs to be a specific trigger. Is that normal? I'm honestly just grasping at other people's experiences that I can empathize with because I feel like if I don't get treatment to figure out these aspects of my personality they could just get out of control. Do you ever feel like that? How do you seek treatment? What can I start looking for?
