@@megamegapop12 whats even weirder is that one piece is the only series where the main character goes against all the usual writer critics and is the most popular character in all the polls. Every other poll for a series has the main overshadowed. Whether it be the world being more important or the other characters being cooler. Its a hard feat. I do see new watchers who hate him but luffy is special. Even goku isn't able to do that with vegeta. Luffy had a competition to be fair with law and I feel oda nerfed law and zolo to keep luffy hype but the animated series loves zolo. Zolo also gets barely any deep story time but it backfires by making him seem mysterious and manly like a stereotype. lol. I also feel if oda can do that in 7 chapters why can't he do it more often. Some chapters feel like he's not sure then others super sure about what he plans.

    • @nichescenes
      @nichescenes Рік тому +1

@@Necroskull388 Yeah, i get that. Personally I'm weird in that if I get to a story I automatically love the main character. And to be fair that's the point. They are the anchor in a usual story. But for shonen usually they show off the others and make them bigger, usually I stay with my main. But for example JJK, demon slayer, etc. Shonen wise they make the other characters too cool. One piece besides the accolades should mostly be put on pedestal for the one series (to my knowledge) that kept their main popular. Again I think zolo is getting close and that's why he makes luffy do cool stuff while zolo stands back but dang kudos. I do not think the series as flawless and the most impressive thing in history as fans but I like it and give it that. Maybe when it finishes il say it's perfect like others.

Easy thing to miss in Law's flashback is that fellow Supernova X Drake's father was the one who was looking to sell the Op-Op fruit and X Drake himself was there as a child; you can see a kid with the X scar on his chin. He was rescued by the marines having just barely avoided the birdcage.

I think my favorite thing about Law is how he is just involuntarily dragged kicking and screaming into the Straw Hat’s chemistry whether he wants to be or not.
There’s one moment in particular on the way to Dressrosa where he’s trying to be super serious and whatnot, and Sanji just starts taking orders for lunch, and Law does a full on double take when he realizes he’s gotten caught up in whatever goofiness this is.

Hearing Law screaming when he finally hears his own cries is one of the most heart breaking scenes in anime history. The small realization of corazon’s death on Law’s face, and the destruction happening behind him as he walks aways had me in tears. Its like he does not care about anything at that point. Parallels between these two were played out through the whole arc, and the point is that Rosinante left Doflamingo alone when they were kids, so Doffy had become what he is without anybody to keep him under control/

I really wish i can tell Merphy how Cora's "I love you" was even more devastating when one knows the nuance of the actual Japanese phrase it was spoken in. Cora's _"aishiteruze"_ was the deepest declaration of love in Japanese that it's not a light phrase to say even amongst Japanese people, even Oda very rarely uses it (correct me if I'm wrong, but if my memory serves me right, the only time Oda ever used it before was with Bellemere) so yeah, I love love love Cora-san and I'm so so sad that I know him for a very short time
Edited: Oda used the phrase too with Ace during... That last moment... Thanks TheSilverKetchup for correcting me!

The fact that it manifests as a result of him regretting having forgotten Robin and declaring that he doesn't want to forget Luffy or be on the seas without him... it's so powerful and vulnerable, and a far cry from the stubborn and prideful Usopp of Water 7.

I love how you point out the parallels without doing the thing that I think a lot of OP fans do in a kind of wrong headed way. A lot of OP fans see the parallels between pre timeskip arcs and post timeskip arcs and will say that Oda is just retreading his old ideas, but that has never been the way I've seen it. Oda does reuse a lot of the themes and overarching plot, but they're always in entirely different contexts. Dressrosa and Alabasta are by far the clearest example of this. Doflamingo didnt just succeed in taking over this country, he didnt just make himself the hero of Dressrosa, he also used the institutional power that Crocodile did not have access to in his quest to take over. He leveraged his power in far more effective ways than Crocodile which is why he succeeded. There is also the differences between Baroque Works and the Doflamingo Family. Doflamingo trusts his crew unconditionally. He is a horrible monster, but he actually does treat his crew like the family he claims it to be. Crocodile on the other hand trusted no one and in turn no one truly trusted him. Outside of their own desire for money and power promised to them by Crocodile, they did not care about the success or failure of his plan.

He gets most of the big hits landed on him from the left. The only shot we get of one of his eyes without glasses on is the right one, and that panel is directly set next to a flashback panel close-up on his covered left eye, as a child, in a scene where arrows were being shot at him and his family. Law's hometown wasn't destroyed by the world government, but by the neighboring kingdoms who were afraid of being infected by the people there. The crime of the world government was that since they knew the disease wasn't infectious, they could have stopped that any time by revealing the truth about the disease. I suppose they didn't do that because otherwise they would've exposed themselves for having profited from something they knew was dangerous for the population. That said, your read of Corazon feeling responsible for Law in some sense could still be valid. It's an interesting view. Also, have you realized that Law's jolly roger is basically Corazon smiley face?
I also think that the whole "gear second chips away your life" is just an exaggeration/mistranslation of Lucci's words. Gear second is just overtaxing on the body, it's like high metabolism, so it does exhaust you fast and makes you consume more energy, but I don't think there is any of that "you life expectancy is being reduced" stuff. @@sambros2 I think Gear Second WAS really bad for his body cause at the time he fought with Rob Gucci he just learned it and his body was not used to that level of blood pressure. Also he was forcefully over using it at that moment to fight with Gucci. I think if he would have trained slowly and more responsibly before that so that his body would have been used to it (like it is now) that it would have not been as dangerous to his lifespan.
Similar to lifting weights or long distance running if you force the heaviest weight you are gonna rip a muscle but if you slowly go with the weight up over a longer period of time your body builds up the necessary strength and muscle mass for you to be able to comfortably and regularly lift the heavier weights.
Therefore i think after the time-skip gear two no longer shortens his lifespan similarly like Gear 3 no longer shrinks him since he learned to control it.

But they are all together in Wano now. Oda already knew he doesn't even need the crew to be there (Impel Down and Marineford are widely considered among the best arcs in One Piece and no crewmember is there), and now he knows he can have half the crew as well. I think splitting them was, to a degree, an experiment, and also an exercise in caution so that the story would not get even longer, with tens of new character needing development. If you compare it to WCI, the over 50 characters on the antagonistic side don't get much development, except for a handful that shine under the bright spotlight, same with the allied crew.
In fact, Dressrosa was an experiment in a lot of things: Splitting the crew; introducing a ton of new characters at once, while giving them at least a bit of a background and entirely different personalities; writing an exceedingly long arc; having all the action happen in THE ONE day, and who knows what else
If Oda had treated WCI the same way as Dressrosa, we'd be talking of WCI lasting WAY over 100 chapters. And imagine if he had treated Dressrosa the way he wanted, with flashbacks for every member of Doffy's crew, not only Señor Pink and Baby 5. 200+ chapters? Add the rest of the crew to the action, and... 250+? 300?

Here it is. The first moment that made me cry in all of fiction. Corazon's sacrifice for Law. That stupid toothy grin gets me every single time. And you can tell Corazon hit close to both Law and Dofi.
I mean Law is obvious. Law calls his crew the heart pirates, after his Devil Fruit which was given to him by Corazon. I find it very fitting that the OpOp no mi is also shaped like a heart. It's like Corazon figuratively gave Law his heart for Law to keep living. The jolly Roger of the heart pirates is a grinning toothy face just like Corazon died. Man was the best father a kid could ask for.
And Doflamingo. His own brother betrayed him. It's clear that he really loves the people he keeps around him in a twisted way. It's like he's desperately trying to make himself a new family after he ruined his own. Imagine the hurt he would have felt finding about Corazon's douple crossing. And that too is shown in his Jolly Roger as a grinning face crossed out.

Ahhh I'm so happy you get this binge this arc. Personally I absolutely love Bellamy's role in Dressrosa and character. I just find him perfect for what I interpret he's meant to represent.
Bellamy being the person who was initially against what the entire series is about, chasing your dreams, will, romance and adventure. Even in just his epithet "the hyena" and how hyenas are a despised animal in most cultures (don't hesitate to cheat and steal), originally feeds off others' corpses (chasing pirates that had lower bounties and lower grade than him as we saw in Jaya). How his speeches are very repetitive throughout Jaya and how his character's so dogmatic in that he's fixed on the idea that a new age doesn't exist. Just like a hyena's included in a binary system (Ignorance/knowledge), Bellamy's thoughts are based on a Manichean way of viewing things where he's 100% certain that his values are right. Therefore that's what his identity's solely constructed on, carrying a very childlike demeanor in that we later discover here in Dressrosa the way Bellamy admires and copies Doflamingo's mannerisms and views him as a role model. The way he holds himself and repeats the same speech becomes endearing almost like a child that's trying so hard to prove a point or prove themselves. He acts delusional living in a lie that he perpetuates and is in continuous denial of. When Luffy first takes him down it's such a huge shutter in his belief system and symbolizes that transition really well, serving as this perfect allegory between the fight for Freedom vs Dogmatism.
Also just a cool little detail but Luffy met Bellamy in Mock Town and had Bellamy literally mock him, then the same chapter they meet again in Dressrosa was titled, "I won't mock you".
Oda knows exactly what he's doing 😭, I'm looking forward to the last third of your thoughts on the arc you're in for a ride!

One more thing about the hyena, that kinda fits his redemption: hyenas are scavengers because their's hind quarters are too short and weak, so they can not hunt, but the jaw of a hyena is stronger than that of a lion. So we have Jaya Bellamy with no redeeming quality, yet though Dressrosa we see he can have the strength in him

Water Law is a reference to the battles of Trafalgar, in Spain, which is the place that inspires Dressrosa, and Waterloo, the 2 battles that cost Napoleon his empire; Hogback's experiments "merging" bodies are inspired on The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells, and so many many many MANY other references. There's a reason the man spends 20 hs a day working. And of course, the most obvious ones, like Jango, Enel and Diamante being designed after Michael Jackson, Eminem and Steven Tyler respectively, or all the Admirals being designed after Japanese actors (or their roles in specific movies). He is "underpowered" because that's who he is, in his essence. Give him a gun, as his father uses, and he would surely aim for the knees or stuff like that. He doesn't need to be more dangerous, because that's not the story Oda is trying to tell. The role of "dangerous" (as in literally killing people) is not for him, but for Zoro and Robin. The role of "strong" is mostly for the Monster Trio, perhaps Franky. And if you want a role for Usopp, together with Sanji, Robin and Nami, they are "smart" fighters, more strategic than Luffy, Zoro and Franky who would charge head-on

I love how Merphy talked about Franky in this video because it's really true that we often go past him. He's not exactly the most overpowered character and is usually portrayed as the cool cyborg shipwright and cola-loving dude, but he has always been reliable. He's like this rock in the team.

I really love Usopp’s shining moments in this arc because of how much it shifts the tides in favor of our crew. With his fight against Sugar and snot-guy he knew he was out-matched but he enters in because he wants to be remembered as himself and not the made up version he’s led on up to this point. And then when His memories of Robin return and he says “my friends will take care of the rest” I’m just so proud of him and how in spite of all his fear he did what his friends needed him to do so that they could do what they need to do. He also had amazing luck which I think is also a trademark of his character

Really if Usopp still remembered Robin, he would have fought to the end for her, but since she was gone he had to find courage outside of being brave for his crew which I agree with Merphy, is much better as a note for his character.

Great analysis of Usopp! The first time I read the arc, I was unhappy with what I saw as an erasure of his character development. On my reread though, I understand this was a necessary step into FURTHER development of his character. In addition to all you've said, Usopp has already proven he'll be brave to protect the lives (Enies Lobby), dreams (Alabasta), and expectations of his crew (Arlong Park). This scenario was a test to see if he could be brave to protect the innocent/helpless outside his crew. To become a brave Warrior of the sea (his dream) he has to prove he can be brave in all scenarios; willing to throw his life down to protect all he holds dear.

I love Law's backstory so much. Fun fact: Oda wrote all of the Supernovas only a few chapters before Sabaody archipelago, so the fact that it's so well integrated into the story and mirrors Doflamingo's own backstory is incredible. The two really mirror and highlight each other in my opinion.

Fantastic review of the middle part of this arc. The tears are definitely warranted. Corazon's death hit extremely hard in the anime, and many reactors have streamed tears galore. When we see Law crying, but heard nothing, we knew Corazon was still breathing, desperately trying to stay alive so Law could escape. But, the second the audience and Law heard Law's audible cries, we knew that Corazon had left us.
You're not wrong about Oda playing the long game. I swear, when he writes stuff, especially Easter Eggs, and is writing something, he's smirking to himself going, "And I'll do something with this in about, oh, 200 chapters." Maniacal. But, I love that man.
Regarding the theory you were told about Usopp after Robin was turned into a toy, I have to admit I'd never heard of that one before. I'm on board with yours. It's similar to the head canon I had going, but I think yours paints a better picture. Also, God Usopp for the win. Such a great character.

First of all, they nailed how silly Pica and his voice and insecurities are and how Luffy and Zoro just can't take him seriously. I also love how confident Zoro is, just for that it's my favorite fight of the arch. But what I love most is just how hilarious it is. I think easily one of my favorite jokes so far is when Pica starts laughing and Zoro just get's mad screaming "There's no way THAT is your laugh"!

I really liked the parallel between Corazón and Saul. Their endings were just so similarly bittersweet, the two of them both smiling to try and keep Law and Robin from crying while they died to ensure the kids a better life. And it was kind of nice balance, coming at it from both sides.
