I suspect the reason this song resonates with so many people, especially men, is because so many fathers and sons have a lot of difficulty expressing their true feelings to each other until it's too late. To my everlasting regret, I'm one of them. 😥 😔

This song always makes me cry. The night my father died, he called me to tell me he loved me. He was 40 when I was born so he was an older father. I was so preoccupied with my own life growing up that I did not pay attention to signs. There are so many questions I wish I could have asked him - I SHOULD have asked him - if only I have known that time was short.
@@andrewcook444 When Dad was 51, I was 11 and he died when he was 78 quite suddenly, so I would have been 38 or 39. Even so, I wasn't ready. My mum just died September 28th. This was expected and I was with her 24 hours a day for 6 days. To me this was not even a choice. It was a privilege. I played music, talked to her even thought she could not respond, cried at times, told her I loved her and I would miss her forever.. Sometimes I even slept in her bed with her. She knew she was not alone. My only hope is that I was able to comfort her and assuage her fear.
I think it's so amazing how they have the children in the choir represent youth and the other choir represent adults point of view. If you listen to the words it's him (youth) and his dad ( adult) can't see eye to eye and when both choirs sing " it's too late when we die" really hits home.
No matter how many times I listen to this song, it still brings tears to my eyes. My Father and I never saw eye to eye.... He has now passed on and we never got to right our wrongs with each other. It will forever haunt me. 😞
@@terminallumbago6465 Understanding is always the best we can hope to attain-- sometimes we rush in with words rather than a chance to think about what we've heard and assess it deeply! Great comment, TL!
This song haunts me because I lost my father when I was 32 (1998). I tear up every time I hear it. RIP Dad, I Love you!! Funny or ironic, we both had generally the same point of views. My youngest was born 8 months after he passed away, so the verse "I think I caught his spirit Later that same year, I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears" destroys me to no end. I can't get back that time lost, but I hope to do better with my daughters.
Sadly my father passed away in 1990, he was 74 & I was 30. The worst part is the fact he died from cancer. At times I had many disagreements which is so sad. Yes we had happy times, but not as much, with deep regret. RIP Dad 💝💝
It's amazing how much you truly understood the message in this song on the first listen. Not just about not getting to say good bye. So much more. You nailed it.

I love that you did this song, you are correct imo that this song is a powerful and potentially beautiful message. I have also felt this song is a blueprint for improving generational relationships. I believe that if we can listen to each other we can realize wisdom of the past and new perspectives from the new generation CAN make for a better future, IF we are willing to listen and understand one another.
@@dalefleming6427 That’s so kind. Yes, he’s been gone a long time. The anniversary of his passing is in a few days, so I always get a little sad around this time. He was so young. This song says a lot.
@@melissawilcox5285 yes....this song is in the pantheon of special, beautiful, and songs with a message that should be taken to heart. In recent years I have found myself feeling other people's pain and the need to comfort them and at least attempt to ease it in some small way, but mostly to show them in my own small way they are not alone.
This was one of the songs that was considered for my dad's funeral song list. My bother wanted this one but at the last minute my bubby decided on Daddy's girl by Red Solvine as a song from my dad to his daughters since his mostly had girls. Still think of my dad when I hear this though.
Today's generation see the issues as problems, our generation saw things as hurdles to overcome. The last 10 years youth has been going backwards by not listening to the past. A great example of this is the re emergence of the "N" word coming back into common use. Good people died to have that go away, and ungrateful youth brought it back. Shame on them.
