  • So recently we just had the absolutely huge news that former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is returning to write for Series 14. Some people love this decision and some people hate it, so I thought I'd dive into it and see what all the fuss is about...

Doctor who isn't stuck in the past.... apart from having Tennant, Catherine Tate, RTD, Bonnie Lanford and the Moff back....
And, fans aren't hypocrites.... apart from how they hated on the Moff and yet now, are gushing over him coming back?
And I'm sure there's plenty of fans who bitched about Jodie (justified or not) who will gush over her if she returns.
My point is: we're all both right and wrong as fans.
But, let's face it: this is better than another sodding SEVENTEEN YEARS OF NO DOCTOR WHO.

I just think it's funny that fans act like RTD hates Moffat, I remember in the late 2010s where every word RTD said about Doctor Who was twisted into a coded insult towards Moffat. In reality they are good friends and The Husbands of River Song was literally a Christmas gift from Moffat to Russell.

    Can I say both?
On the one hand, having the Grand Moff back is the best news I've heard out of DW since "Twice Upon a Time" ended. But it honestly worries me that they're feeding the nostalgia bait and trying to have it be Series 1 to 4 again.

    • @vullord666

This has been my biggest worry ever since the three specials. Modern who has this great formula built up of allowing itself to be perceptive and change and new ideas. Every actor had a tenure of 3 series (except 9 unfortunately) and showrunner two doctors. And RTD to Moffat set this up greatly. Both were so different and appealed to and angered different fans. It kept doctor feeling fresh and like a show that could do anything. In comparison I've HATED all these insistent reboots and remakes and whatnot coming from the same batch of writers (or what feels like them) because production companies are too afraid to make any risks.
I was (well still am) feeling weird that Doctor Who basically just fell into the same trap because Chibnall took that risk taking and freedom DW had too far. It's the fact that David Tennant LED the 60th anniversary. Not Jodie or Ncuti. And that will never fully sit right with me.
I've just accepted the situation and am hopeful that while, Moffat and RTD are both nostalgia baits, their writing won't be. I hope that while it might feel familiar (and it has felt so familiar and that was one of my biggest problems with the special), they'll take risks with new ideas and be the creative DW deserves. And granted while Chibnall was a new writer, none of what he did actually felt creative or risk taking. In fact he even backtracked his own timeless child mess the same episode it was revealed (saying it doesn't matter and lampshading it). Somehow RTD has made more mention of the trauma that reveal would cause than Chibnall (granted I stopped watching after the series 12 finale so maybe I'm wrong). That's what I'm hopeful for.

All of mainstream criticism of Moffat as a showrunner comes down to Series 6 and 7. People seem to forget that seires 8, 9 and 10 have much lower scope series archs that move away from the convoluted plots of Moffat1 and also from the finale powerscaling of Russell1

Both RTD and Moffat have written some of my least favorite scenes, episodes, and choices in Doctor Who, but also have both written some of my favorite (and Moffat my very favorite). I'll always give my personal vote to Moffat because 12 is MY Doctor and his tenure peak who for me (series 5 is also up there). Part of me is always going to wish Chibnall hadn't made it so we NEED them back and the BBC kept letting new writers lead new eras of who, but both RTD and Moffat are great writers and they are also both really humble with their positions and understand the concept of critical feedback and that not everyone is going to love every writing choice they make. At least in the interviews. They've even talked about their own writing after the fact in the way many fans do; acknowledging their short comings. Plus they just have great podcast energy together (which we need a full podcast series of them if the BBC is reading this). Doctor Who won't be perfect under either or them (it isn't under anyone), but I'm a lot more confident in both.

Just to point out an interesting phenomena. Over here in the Chinese DW fandom, perceptions about RTD and Moff are the exact opposite, with the Moff getting almost universally loved, while RTD was often criticized for unstable quality output and deus ex mechina. So public perception is a funny thing. These opposite views cannot be both right, but they can be both illusionary. Just put them to rest and enjoy the ride.

The only problems I had with Moffat as showrunner were the obsession with River Song and to a lesser extent the Weeping Angels, the love triangle with Rory and Amy (though I do like how that resolved with the Last Centurion), the sex jokes, and the idea that the show should be a "fairytale". He did eventually get us the best TARDIS design of New Who, dark colors aside. Put Moffat's 2nd TARDIS design with Davies' new TARDIS colors and working lighting and you've got a great TARDIS interior.

Perhaps RTD was being courteous and inclusive to offer the previous show runners and writers the chance to contribute to the new series.
A few episodes from past writers probably won't hurt but it is high time to bring in newer writers on board and have some different inputs. There's been good episodes from non-regular writers (family of blood, girl who waited). Some new input might also counterbalance some of the impact the show runner's style has on the stories, which was perhaps an issue in the SM and CC periods.
Have to say 2 of the 3 specials also left a few doubts about the structuring of story telling from RTD himself; that didn't go as smooth as expected hopefully sharpens up in the coming season.

I've had enough subpar Doctor Who since he left, best news regarding this new era of Doctor Who by far.
For the haters, I'd be more worried about RTD writing 6/8 episodes having already written 4 prior episodes, than Moffat writing one episode.
I wish he will come back in subsequent seasons too, I want more diversity in top 10 episode lists, Heaven Sent, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Blink and World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls are still dominating them (guess who wrote those).

Personally, I feel nostalgia pandering back to the early 2000s is a really smart thing to do, considering that nets you your 20-40 year old demographic who, at least in American circles, have been fairly starved for content harkening back to the late 1990s early 2000s era sci-fi. As fan of the Chibnall era, I look forward to the day when perceptions of his ear have softened and the fandom looks back on it with nostalgia. Side note, it will also be interesting to see the cycle continue when the Star Wars Sequel generation grow up.

@@mayotango1317 Oh yeah, such a family that Amy had the daughter of The Tardis cause reason that somehow becomes emotionally infactuated with The Doctor becoming his wife sorta only not really assassin - no really what on Earth even happened with River Song's character for Moffat to mess it up in the most ridiculous fashion imaginable? Also comedy was more cringey in RTD era - why it's never the focus, you can have someone as flamboyant as The Toymaker or The Master have a dance to some pop number whilst still being treated by a threat by Doctor and co. Russell get's that. WIth Moffat on other hand we've moments where Missy is cartoon sound popping out of television monitors like it's Art Attack for crying out loud!
As for the time-war just cause you can re-write something doesn't mean you necessarily should and bringing back Galifrey did nothing to enhance the story and did more to reduce The Doctor to another overly self-important figure. The whole point of Time-Lord Victorious was to show how corruptible Time-Lord's could become within their own boundaries.
You'd that with Russell as well - yeah there were moments of which you can consider to be: 'soap opera', but all of his characters were developed and not just simply tropes. Each of them had their own arc and journey - you cannot say the same for Moffat's characters with exception to Rory and Bill.
Moffat gave us a increasingly frustratinging hodge-podge mess of conflicting arcs, poorly developed characters and increasingly nonsenical resolutions with no consistent rules whatsoever. We'd a second big bang that'd less impact on the universe than Chris Chibnall's flux...
That's why for me Toby Whithouse, Sarah Dollard and Jamie Mathieson are all stand out writers during the Moffat era for me personally. If anyone is to become showrunner after Russell T. Davies second tenure then it should be one of them. I'd go with Mathieson.
I've got no problems with Moffat coming back to write self-contrained stories - history has shown that's his strength even during his own tenure, I just don't want him becoming show runner again.

If Twitter having a melt down at Moffat returning isn't fun enough, wait until RTD pulls a fast one and brings in Chibnall. Be an outright explosion.
Anyway one of the things I recall RTD doing during his first run was having lighter stories at the start of the series then having more character heavy, higher stakes stories in later episodes. For example, compare The Shakespere code to The Family of Blood. Both are very different but Family of Blood feels so much heavier for it's character drama and stakes. So Moffat is likely writing a lighter story that isn't meant to be a big end of the universe or world type story, but more character focused and smaller.
Of course this being only eight episodes series I'm most likely going to be wrong because RTD may have the stories to hit harder from the get go.

I think you missed Moffat's biggest W as a Doctor Who writer: his work in the 50th anniversary. For all my problems (which are many) with his writing he absolutely delivered when it mattered most, when DW was truly global for the last time and when he had to give justice to 50 years of lore. Hats off to him, for me I'll always remember the awesome feelings he captured in that anniversary. So in my mind he's got the skills and the iron within to deliver good Doctor Who when it's important, what RTD failed spectacularly to do in the 60th, the Moff passed with flying colors.

    • @zocialix

The Day of the Doctor is terrible and overated - you've random comedic hijinks with a Zygone - then at the last minute reverse the Time-War as if it were a separate episode. 15 minutes of that is dedicated to 10 being out of character as Time-Lord Victorious and marrying Queen Elizabeth the 1st (Which is only supposed to be a throwaway joke during start of The End of Time Part 1) Bringing Galifrey back was the biggest mistake of Moffat's tenure as it enhanced nothing for what was gotten rid of. All that depth and mystery of time-war only for it to be turned into a disappointing light show. What you consider to be his biggest W - I consider lead to the downfall of the superior lore the reboot originally began with which provided it depth compared to the original series from the 60's onwards. Thanks to Moffat bringing back Galifrey we ended up with Chris Chibnall giving us The Timeless Child with Russell T. Davies coming back to roll with what he's been given. Creating a scenario where what was once supernatual and reality bleading into each-other where The Doctor is back to square one - doesn't know where he's from (thanks again Chibnall...) and is investigating a whole new universe under the changed conditions of its rules.

@@NTNG13 My point is with regards to Galifrey, The Doctor's homeworld - don't fix what's not broken and that's precisely what both Moffat and Chibnall did. Even Moffat's Galifrey episodes were lame and lead to nothing that furthered understanding of timelords (One of them was dedicated to having a second go at Clara's passing) - hell worse Day of the Doctor presents The Timelords as if they were victims when even though in End of Time Part 2 it's explained that they'd become just as power hungry as The Daleks wanting to destroy physical reality itself to: 'ascend' from their bodies. Also, Missy was okay, but the problem with Moffat is he can't seen to get out of comedy mode - seriously having Missy cartoon sound pop big head out of monitors is just silly immediately removing all tension. WIth that said she was great during Season 10 - I liked the idea of her gradually becoming good. Moffat was starting to get better at writing developed characters near end of his tensure - just a pitty we couldn't have that from the get go. Also less said about the nonsense that's River Song the better... Completely ruined that character.
