    I got to see this show live on Broadway, with Morgan Freeman in the lead. Decades later I still get chills from listening to recordings of it.

    Heard this song a few years ago in a wonderful little movie CAMP about young people at a performing arts camp. The movie was Anna Kendrick's breakthrough performance. The rendition in CAMP and in the GOSPEL AT COLONUS are both wonderful.

    have seen this at least 5 times live...when it debuted at BAM with this cast i believe... i became a rabid fan...Jevetta, Morgan, The 5 Blind Boys of Alabama....it was simply life-changing that Bob Telson could create this mashup of greek tragedy and gospel....never thought to look here for footage...doh

    CAMP was my introduction to this song 💗 - had no idea it was associated with Gospel at Colonius!! I've seen the production but I've always heard wonderful things about it!! I'm going to see if UA-cam has it - ya never know! 😉
    Nonetheless - THIS is SLAMMIN!! 🔥 And the Sista singing lead is pure honey!!! 🍯🐝🌹🌹🌹

    I’ve only ever heard this song from “Camp”, this is GLORIOUS!! I really need to know what this is from because it’s clearly some kind of gospel Antigone and...well....that’s kind of a thing for me.

    I was honored to be a performer in the theatre next door (American Theatre Festival) in Philadelphia doing the Jungle Book musical. I remember this song being performed live and it was like my soul was being cleansed. I couldn't believe Morgan Freeman was there...this was 1985, I think. I knew him from The Electric Company (:) so, I was a dazzled 20 year old.

    What's this from?

  • @Miss_Camel
    @Miss_Camel 3 роки тому +2

    Also, they’re singing to their father, Morgan freeman, and if one sister is Ismene then the other must be Antigone, then they’re literally pleading with him via gospel music to not murder his daughter for giving her brother a proper burial. Which means Morgan Freeman is Oedipus. Yep. That Oedipus. But don’t worry, he doesn’t like, REALLY kill her. He just has her walled up into a small space to suffocate or die of starvation or thirst. You know, classy. Like the Vestal virgins.

      Oh my. Thanks for this synopsis. I always wondered where this song originally came from because I heard it from the movie/musical Camp, which as about a musical theatre camp for kids/teens. This was a lot darker than I was expecting, but I'm definitely intrigued. Greek mythology through gospel music? Kinda genius

    • @tisgoodjuju
      @tisgoodjuju 2 роки тому +1

      Sorry to be that guy, but I think this is actually about Ismene reuniting with Oedipus and Antigone at Colonus to bring them news of his sons fighting a civil war back in Thebes. What you're referring to is the plot of 'Antigone', the play Sophocles wrote which follows on from 'Oedipus at Colonus', which this musical is based on.

    • @Miss_Camel
      @Miss_Camel 2 роки тому +2

      @@tisgoodjuju yes the song is definitely Ismene singing, Antigone is the narrator. But I definitely need to read that play! I’ve only read “Antigone”, thank you! That really is Antigone’s fate eventually, tho, peanutjelly.
