I know man, but she does a fake happy voice so much on the show, even when she's being actually nice part of me gets creeped out 😅 Guess you can call that another testament to her acting abilities...
I think that has to do with the fact that she is obviously an intelligent woman. Let's face it a lot of the actors that come on his show are not the top of the barrel as far as intellect
Lee Gary she's not "pure evil" .. why do you think June asked her to be the Godmother of the baby? In some sick kind of way she really does care about those girls the handmaids and the babies. I guess we all have our own definitions of Pure Evil but to meet your evil would be someone like Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones or even that recent case with Jennifer Rosenbaum complete psychopath
@@lauracatherine9925 When did June ask her to be her baby's Godmother? She made her promise to make sure she's safe at the Waterfords', but that's about it.
yeah i might be mixing up the scene, I just know in the same episode she asked the martha to be the babys godmother, she asked lydia to protect the baby, but i believe lydia mentions she was a godmother at some point

@Charlie Al has an Irish twang alright, but she's probably got the accent somewhere within the family anyway, Dowd is an Irish name, knew a few nuns that talked a lot like her, but acted like Aunt Lydia. No jokes.
Look for the interview she did alongside Everyone's Favorite Character Actress, Margo Martindale. Never mind, here it is: www.vulture.com/2017/06/ann-dowd-margo-martindale-conversation.html
What a lovely lady. Usually I don´t believe the guests in their gratitude - it feels like acted / pretended for me. But her I believed everything. I hope she gets more recognition.
jrfraukar The fact that it's her first late night interview makes her even more endearing. She's on there totally being herself. I was a huge fan of The Leftovers, which she co-starred in, and her performance was perfection. It's nice to see a woman of a particular age, who had been fairly unknown, being recognized for nothing more than being exceptional actor.
Who else was smiling this whole video? Can you imagine her being the absolute sweetest thing (like she clearly is) and then having to pull out that darkness in her acting? It must be a real shock to her co-stars and it seems like she'd apologize immediately. She needs to come back. We need more of her positive energy.
She's cute as a button!! I can't at all see Aunt Lydia in her... it must be the makeup. But even her natural voice is different from Aunt Lydia's. That's crazy good acting. Ironically, she seems like the sweet "aunt" that you'd go to when mom says no.
It shows her raw & refined acting ability. You're spot on how tricky it is to envision Aunt L in this interview. She deserves all the accolades..... she's so down to Earth, too.
Same here😭 when I saw her on Masters of Sex as the protagonist's mother I got scared again immediately. But of course that's a different character & she played that beautifully as well. A talented, brilliant actor indeed❤️
Such a genuine and brilliant light, this magnetic woman. How she talks *directly* to host and audience as if we're all just sitting around the den. With this much charisma, let's be glad she's using her powers for good.
She was brilliant in The Leftovers and also now in Handmaids Tale. What a delightful person, so talented and so truly humble! It's so nice to see her getting recognition, she deserves it ❤️
I have been binging the show all weekend (I'm in season 3), and she is incredible. A total monster most of the time, but laced with moments of patience, understanding, and caring. It's a testament to her acting that you can't not hate her character.
How the HECK can this lovely women be Aunt Lydia, the most hated women I've ever seen on TV??? I loath that character for what it represents. And I see her...what a great actress to make me believe in her character when she is totally so different. Well played, Madam. You would have given Merrily Streep a run for her money.
plot twist its the other way around, she's a good actress because she pretends to be lovely woman in real life, in movies she's just being herself? XD j/k
Simply because she is a titanically talented actress. She makes the transformation look effortless. Total "A League" of actors - even if she isn't as famous/a celebrity as the Hollywood leads
Two very lovely people. That statement about grief, "living in the world of pretending" that your story is the same as everyone else. It's so true and beautifully stated.
I have this interview saved, and have watched it about four or five times now, and it still remains one of my absolute favorite interviews Stephen has ever done. She's so lovely, and wonderful, and such an extraordinary storyteller. It is shocking to know that inside her brilliant acting mind, the character of Aunt Lydia lives. Keep up the amazing work, Ann Dowd. Your talent is out of this world.
I was so happy that she won her Emmy that I didn't even mind that it wasn't for her AMAZING portrayal on "The Leftovers". I just want to hug Ann Dowd. I believe she has a healing touch. Even her voice is so soothing.
The Handmaid's cast are such a nice group of people and talented actors. The difference between their roles and them in real life is so striking. Aunt Lydia and Serena Joy are so cold but Ann and Yvonne are such sweet people.
Ann Dowd is an absolute treasure! It was so wonderful to see her on her inaugural late night talk show appearance. Please bring her back, Stephen. Next time dig into her B’way experience.
She is amazing. She was also on a show called the leftovers and she was so insane in that show. (Literally she played a functional crazy person) She is just such a compelling actress. Deserved every bit of that Emmy.
Such a genuine person. You can tell when she speaks and in her facial expressions that she really is thankful and happy to be there. I hope we see more in movies and TV, she definitely deserves it!
Oh my, what a profound interview. In just a few sentences, she tells a story as if it were a literary classic. Excellent!! I love intimate interviews like these, so compelling. Stephen and LSSC, you must have her on again soon. She’s also wonderfully terrifying in ‘A Handmaid’s Tale.’

Oh yes, as Aunt Lydia she looks absolutely hideous, but here, such a beautiful lady! And the Emmy story - hilarious!
