And there will never be another like her. Ever again.
The first time I watched this movie was in an English Lit class. From beginning to end, there wasn't a Dry Eye in the room. A few of us had to walk out of class. The instructor understood, because he had already cried an ocean of tears himself. Unbeknownst to all of us, Mahila Jackson was his Great Aunt. 💜🎶
I what a great teacher you had.
@@wandajazz1061 We need MORE teachers like him.
@@retroguy9494 Teachers are the backbone of our communities but we ,as a society, overlook the real warriors. So many teachers go out of their way to open the next generations eyes. The clownishness behavior wins out in America.
@@wandajazz1061 The RIGHT kinds of teachers do what you describe. There are plenty of bad ones too. And most are just middle of the road. And you are also correct about the clownishness behavior. And that seems to be getting worse.

If I was an actress in this scene , I would have been on the floor. The camera crew would have had to carry me out.
Right. I don't see how they sit there. Lawd i would have been like Sara Jane.🤦🏽
It's easy to see how Lana Turner got the motivation for bawling her eyes out.
They probably cried every time that scene came...the ending was harder, when her daughter came running to the casket, telling her mother she's sorry, to late mama gone.
@@joycecunningham8785 right
It was said that when Lana Turner played the death scene, she was through for the day. In other words, she had to just go home. She couldn't do no mo'.
These people emotions in this scene I feel was real even though they were e suppose to be acting. Mrs Jackson had a voice of an angel.
Yes so true. The indefinable talent moved them for real. X
Yessss
Her singing makes you feel things
Amen
She was purely annointed!
Mahalia wore it out! this scene wasnt acting, they had church!!!! Lana Turner was so messed up for real that Wanita Moore later said that after this scene, Lana had to take 2 weeks off to recover! Mahalia wasnt playing, she was just-as the old folk say-"dat gul wuz sangin"!!!!
It’s Juanita
She left the set and couldn't be persuaded until her makeup slapped her, which knocked her out of her hysterics and she returned to do the scene.
Lana's daughter was accused of murdering Lana's abusive boyfriend. That's one of the reasons those tears were real. She couldn't handle that and the anointed singing of Ms. Jackson.
I remember my mama sitting my sister and I down at the tv and putting this movie on back in the early 80’s 😮😫😳🥵 the emotions ……
I don’t care who funeral I’m at if they sing this song I get teary eyed
Omg then I need you to hear my mother sing this song💯She be going in on it istg
Me too...every single time.
I thought it was a real funeral too till someone said it from a movie but it gave me good bumps
Goose bumps sorry lol
Yes ma'am. I'm walking out. My oldest sister who is in her 70's does this to me when she sing this song. She is 16 years older then me. Some times I will listen to Mahalia knowing she going to make me cry. But don't be afraid to cry and release the pain built inside us. Its a beautiful thing.

most definitely- the crying due to ms mahalia Jackson's voice cant be controlled

This movie was made almost 40 years before I was born, I’ve watched this movie countless times growing up, and I still cry like a baby watching this movie (from the death scene to the marching band). She needed ALL her flowers 4 this one. Whewww, all I can picture is black folks in those days being lynched, spit on, abused and just hearing that pain and hurt from her voice sounds like 100 dead black Angels singing together.
It’s like in the book of Revelation 6:10 “and they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11- then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.
Love one another and stop the division and hate. You won’t get to heaven. 😇

I remember my mama tricking me into watching this movie all the while saying that it wasn't a tearjerker. The moment Annie died and Auntie Mahalia Jackson started singing i broke down into tears 🙏🏾
I have watched this movie so many times and I cry, cry, and cry Sarah Jane was very disrespectful all her life too her mother. When her mother died you can see how much she was liked and loved by many it wasn't a dry eye no where. We can see how a broken heart, disrespect, and most of all Sarah Jane was ashamed of her mother because she was black how sad. At the end of the day love has no color and it is unconditional...
Sirk has Sarah Jane tearfully embrace her mother's coffin while wailing, "I've killed my mother!" He was a genius, a master filmmaker.
Every Mother’s Day, I would watch Imitation of Life with my mother.
Ms Mahalia Jackson brought with her the centuries of pain, the suffering, the endurance, the dignity and the faith of a people, and she delivered it all through her glorious voice! Thank God for this remarkable woman and may her voice & her memory live on through the ages!
I used to hear my mother talk about this movie and her singing, and now I know why.

One of God’s great creations. Mahalia’s voice is covered in gold.
If anyone claims to have an “ear” in voices of music, “they” would agree on Mahailia Jackson being on an extraordinary different level among them all.

Unfortunately this version is private to Universal Pictures.

Mahalia had a God given incredible singing talent. Now the Lord is enjoying her singing to him.
There is not a dry eye in the funeral scene, the love between two friends. How Anne’s daughter broke her mother’s heart. The acting wasn’t acting but real life. How many people are imitation of life
My mum and my auntie made me and my brothers and cousins watched this classic of classic movie and I ain’t gonna lie I cried this scene still gets me choked up to this day...

This Douglas Sirk movie (Imitation Of Life) and this song are real masterpieces full of truth and emotion.
I'm still crying. Beautiful!
How could someone dislike this video? They wicked and badminded.
When I was a little girl, I was introduced to this song in a movie, with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. The movie was Naughty Marietta, the slaves of the plantation can be heard in the background singing this song, to the Trouble Tree. And then I heard it again in this movie. It has long since haunted me. I am 49 years old and my mother loved Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, and I have grown to love them and have introduced them to my children with their music and their movies. This song goes right through me, the pain, the anguish, the utter beauty of the melody that you can't shake once you have heard it. To me, it is the sound of heartbreak, and considering its origins, it's no wonder. Slavery was vile. Rejoice to live in a world where we can choose to love our fellowman, no matter who and what they are. May we love each other as Jesus loved us.
I can’t wait to hear that trumpet. I give u all the praise and worship Lord 🙌🏽
