- welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - The Elder Root (Warped Rim)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large Elder Root into a natural edged vessel.
When woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the thumbs-up button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button or bell icon.
Thanks.

There are no words to explain the feeling of seeing the grain of wood pop when you coat it !
I know it’s lovely isn’t it 😊👍🏻

This came out as an absolute piece of art! I had no idea where it was going and thought it'd involve epoxy at some point.
A pleasant surprise?
Me too
BOOM.....mind blown.
Awesome 😉
Wonderful and truly lovely result . Not a drop of resin in sight . A natural thing of beauty turned expertly
Thanks will. I’m glad we share a certain taste. 👍🏻

You sure turn some funky stuff to make it so beautiful. Guess that proves you and God have a sense of humor
I appreciate that you don't just soak everything in epoxy. You actually work the wood.
Thanks Isaak. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😊

When I see all those wood ribbons I think, great firestarter material. 🤔💡👍🏻🇺🇲

Jack! As you can see I'm watching some of your older videos and this one is just... INCREDIBLE! I'm sorry I missed it the first time around. Both beautiful and stunning. I'm amazed at how you could foresee this from that root ball! Well done, my friend!
Thanks J. Glad you enjoyed it. I have some great vids lined up for you 😊👍🏻
Just INCREDIBLE!!!!

When he was shaping the outside I was thinking "I hope he leaves the top on it". 'love the piece
Were you pleased with the final result?
Hayranlıkla izliyorum. Hipnotize olmuş gibi.

Thanks Peter, yeah I can see that too. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

Thanks a lot Mark. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
Another thing of beauty 😁
Thanks S. Glad you enjoyed it. Have you seen much elder wood?
No. Just started watching woodturning. Came up in my feed and here we are!
Absolutely marvelous! What an amazingly awesome idea for a bowl. It is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing! I love it! ❤🙃
No problem Dot. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
What a knarly piece of wood. Go for it, can't wait to see what you make of it! 👍🏻🇺🇲🎄
😊👍🏻
Who would have thought that something that looked like a basket of snakes would turn out to be something so beautiful but that goes to show what a true craftsman can do that's really great work Jack. James
Cheers James.. “basket of snakes” gave me a chuckle 😊👍🏻
AMAZING! You take the oddest pieces and 'turn' them into artistic treasures!
Keep doing what you love!
Thanks RL. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
С коряги,создать такую красоту,это просто чудо,браво мастер!!
Sorry I have no way of translating this comment 😕
Saw this one on one of the group of video's you did. Had to watch again, still think its great.
Ein guter Blick für eine schöne Form und ein sicheres Drechseln über die Zwischenräume hinweg! Bravo!

Absolutely stunning. So want to get back into turning after 45 years
Jack, amazing, drop dead magnificent. 🇺🇲
Cheers jess, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
C'est une idée géniale. Il ne suffit pas de maîtriser le métier de tourneur, il faut en plus avoir de l'imagination. Bravo!
Thank M. Do you have a good imagination?
@@JackMackWoodturning Oui, je crois mais dans un autre domaine que le vôtre. J'aime donner une seconde vie aux vieux objets que je recycle.
I would never have guessed it would look so great!
Thanks Irene, I appreciate you watching 😊👍🏻
Literally have some sort of OCD seeing these knots get knocked and smoothed down into beautiful pieces…it’s so oddly satisfying.
😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning honestly the more fucked-up looking the start, the better! 👍🏽
Beautiful! I am amazed at how thin and fragile it looks knowing it came from a root ball!
Aha looks can be deceiving. I have a great root sat waiting to be turned at the moment. It is HUUUUUGE 😊👍🏻
Смотреть приятно на работу мастера!
Another work of art from you ,at one stage I thought you were only going end up with a egg cup ,. Lol .thanks again Jack
Nice one Dave. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
I could not imagine how you were going to work on this root ball! Very beautiful piece.
It took me some time too Rebecca, at least an hour playing with different orientations and trying to imagine what might come out of that uneven twisted mass of root and wood.
Thanks for watching 😊🤙🏻
Gorgeous! I don't how your chisel didn't get caught in the holes. I love the way you kept the organic edges with the burnt wood!
Nice job Jack
Cheers Saul 😊👍🏻
On my lathe that thing would have flown into a dozen pieces. Well done.
Haha thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it man 👍🏻😉
That would make the most beautiful yarn bowl
Interesting thought.. have you seen “turnedstudios” yarn bowls? You can find them on Instagram and Etsy.
@@JackMackWoodturning
They don’t have anything listed. No recent updates. Bummer
Hey, turned studios is also me… the Etsy page has no listings currently but you can see my yarn bowls on Instagram at

You always have access to kindling, firewood, and sawdust as well. ☺️
Haha I certainly do. Got enough firewood to last a lifetime
Do you have a real fire?
@@JackMackWoodturning No, I don't have a fireplace. But, I hope you do, to keep extra warm this winter. 🙋🏼
I am having one installed next week 😁 🔥
Beautiful root vase Jack.
Cheers man, thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
I so want that bowl.....it's gorgeous!
Thanks Snow. Glad you enjoyed it ☺️👍🏻
Jack get yourself a mechanics leather glove for your left hand. It protects against heat and woodchips and still gives you great tool, control and feel.
Nice one Rick. I will look into that buddy 👍🏻😉
Super!!! Bravo!!!👍👍👍👏👏👏

Holy Cow ! No pun intended, beautiful vase. I could not see the final look as you went along. Well done 👍 !
Cheers Dan. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
Inspired pyromania really sets this up. Beautiful piece from what looks a very challenging project.
Cheers Paul. When I first dug this root ball out the ground and sprayed the soil off I thought “ wow, the possibilities, I could do so much with this”
I then stood at the lathe with it for about 2 hours like a Mexican stand off trying to work out how to mount it to get any more than a thimble out of it.. it was one of the most difficult pieces iv had, from a planning point of view.
I appreciate you watching 👍🏻
outstanding !
Thanks Erik. Where are you watching from?
What an extraordinary piece. It is so beautiful.
Thanks Judith. I appreciate you watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻

Beautiful.
Thank you 😊
That’s was incredible!!!! 👍🏻😜
Thanks Jay. Glad you liked it. 😊👍🏻
That was the neatest video. I’m a wood turner myself.
Always good to meet a fellow turner! Any good projects lined up?
Oh yeah. Right now I’m finishing up around 10 pen kits, 20 hollow forms vases, I’m fixing to start on 4 big urns, 10 pet urns and another 20 bottle stoppers. How bout you????
My buddy and mentor Mark Sillay is really hooking me up. 🙂 I never knew you could wood slice before.
I can't even imagine what the vibrations of turning these odd shaped pieces do to the bearings in your headstock or the stiffness and tolerances in your banjo and tailstock. You must go through a lathe every other year. But with the projects you make and the UA-cam views, it is well worth it. Keep up the good work Jack!!!
When turned correctly thee is very little in the way of vibration. 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning phone no
Emagine the vibrations on the end of the cutting tool, and that vibration traveling down to the hands.Tim the Tool Man Taylor is still twerking and shaking his ass, legs, arms, and head as he walks down the streets of his town. 👋
Brave man given how often roots grow around rocks.
It only take a few seconds to resharpen my gouge 😆😉
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
You are hardworking man and I love your channel👍
Thanks a lot buddy 😊👍🏻
LOL I was terrified the whole time you were doing that eeeek hehehe :)
No need to worry Amber, it is all safe 😊😉👍🏻

WOW AMAZING ‼️‼️‼️ WELL DONE 👏👏👏
Thanks Bettie. Glad you enjoyed it 😁👍🏻
I love the way the flame did the edges it turned out nice but with that narrow base I think it's bound for the kindling pile.If it gets knocked off of anything it will explode it's so fragile
Cheers bill. Aye it’s almost like pottery. Probably closer to an earthen wear than porcelain tho 😊
Thanks for watching
That's a beauty! And no epoxy. 😃
Beautiful.. another piece of art
Nice one Ron matey 😉👍🏻
That's a beautiful piece looks so natural but still living👏👍
