Music is meant to be shared, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in people complaining about cover songs. It’s what you bring to that song that matters. I became a fan of blues because of Led Zeppelin not in spite of them. If it moves you then it’s worth listening to regardless. Glad to hear that you're going in order. Prepare to be shook!
Awesome take and Philosophy on this Pete! Totally Agree! The only thing that matters is that you added a piece of yourself to it and it moves people. Whether its sampling songs or taking from blues, just make people feel something. Music is meant to be shared and inspire newer generations. Don't be a snob and look down on newer music. You'll just turn into the old people who shouted at you for listening to your stuff back in the day lol
Stealing music is not sharing music. Artists survive because they get paid for their work through proper crediting. To claim credit for another artist's work is theft of their ability to be properly paid for their work. That's slimy.
Syed.... you want original, check out: Jeff Beck Band; Bolero; 1966. Please take note of the band members. The orginal Super Group. Plus, think of their youth at the time.
There is a difference between covering and sampling. sampling is playing a recording of someone else playing. Covering, or "nicking" bits of melodic theme and then PHYSICALLY playing it yourself is still being a musician. Instead of copying and pasting parts into a drum track, and auto tuning yourself over it to keep yourself in tune, you actually pick up an instrument and play something, even if it sounds a lot like something else. All music is derived from it's roots, but only recently do they take chunks of other's art and put their name on it.
This is it. There's a difference between taking your guitar and playing something someone else wrote and recorded, and taking bits of THEIR recording and claiming it's your work.
Jimmy Page played this for Robert Plant when they first met. This is the concept Page had for his new band. Slow gentle parts punctuated by explosions of thunder. Light and shade he called it.
This is my absolute favorite Led Zeppelin song and that's saying a lot because I have so many. Everybody in that band was beyond insanely talented. Everybody. And the way that they came together as a tight band is just mind blowing. But I'd love to hear this early stuff for sure. I swear to God I got goosebumps every time I hear this song.
Zeppelin added their own sound and power to many classic blues tracks, they played the instruments, did the arrangements, sang. Taking something great and in many ways making it greater. Big difference between that and "sampling" a song.
My favorite part of Robert's voice is his lower register. So beautiful. It's all the more resonant when he comes down from his higher range to his lower range and also with Jimmy mimicking his voice on the guitar. I've listened to him for 50 years, he's often sung me to sleep. So beautiful. The confluence between Jimmy and Robert is magic. Robert is still gifting us with his voice today!
Helene here, Linda. Robert’s voice……just his speaking voice, helped me to sleep during beginning of Covid. Listened to his Digging Deep podcasts so much I have the intro practically memorized. His lower register is beautiful…mild vibrato….love his last few albums….
Robert Plant himself had stated in interviews that he felt his voice reached its Peak Performance on the third album!! He felt that that was his best voice ever!! I cannot disagree especially when you listen to the song "since I've been loving you" on that album!!!
Can't WAIT for that one. No spoilers though, other than to say that they almost entirely re-invented blues progressions in a way which was wonderfully organic and unpretentious.
@@SavishGoat why why do people do that? Just because something isn’t your taste doesn’t mean it’s worthless crap. You don’t like rap or hip/hop that’s fine, but why bash it? It’s art, you cannot qualify it.
@Oscardcullen rap is not music its talking that's the meaning of rap no extraordinary talent just telling a story about your exploits or life experiences. I fail to see the real talent as compared to AC/DC Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath Deep Purple Guns & Roses Metallica Foo Fighters Nirvana Rolling Stones Queen and the list goes on. There is no artistry or real musical talent in rap music its not music I would not go to see a live performance there's just no way.
I absolutely love his singing on this and the fact that it's mostly acoustic but still achieve that intensity in the hard sections. Just wonderful. Glad to see that you could appreciate a lot of that.
Bear in mind Plant had JUST had his 20th birthday when this was recorded. He was still learning. His power at this point was legendary. At one show maybe a month or two after this was recorded the vocal PA system failed and they kept going. Plant could still be heard at the back of the room over the rest of the band. Bonham was also 20 years old. Think about that...
@@SyedRewinds Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is a masterpiece. Even Bob himself changed his live performances of the song to try and sound like Jimi's version. Elvis Presley's 1970 live performance of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is another cover that dwarfs the original.
My take on rappers sampling old songs is that the creators of all those sampled songs did all the heavy lifting. They spent years learning to play their instruments, they also created something from nothing, which is huge. Rappers simply add their two cents on top of all that hard work. It is true that in the right hands, the new song can be transcendent. Also remember that Led Zeppelin wrote a vast majority of their music, and that reworking an old song is the exception.
For me, music is all about melody. Creating a melody from nothing is the craft. Then interweaving the sounds of various instruments & vocals with percussion to create a finished thing of beauty. This where hip-hop falls short. Just pounding beats, heavy bass and loud talking with attitude. No melody. Pasting a sampled sound may add a little sweetness, but it’s more of an afterthought, and not creative at all. For this reason alone, I have no attraction to this type of music. It all sounds too much the same, is not creative, and generally speaking, not good to my ear. My 2 cents.
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is an old, old traditional song that had been done by many artists over the years, such as Joan Baez. Led Zeppelin were unique in that they combined the quiet and the loud in this song perfectly.
Plant's voice this early was more raw, and maybe a bit more powerful. But all the way through Zofo, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti his voice was getting more refined. He could do more with it and it was more mature. After that his voice did deteriorated a little, but still great. And of course you have to remember he was 19 when he joined LZ. The voice continues to evolve through the years.
A bit powerful ? Ahah buddy i understand you love Plant but be logical. His prime voice made him Robert Plant just with first 4 album he leave his mark on rock as a rock god and how he could do more with his voice when he has less power less range less stability etc ? Its not evolution when you cant even get close to notes you hit 1 year ago. His voice didnt evolved he didnt used it carefully and destroyed his special voice.
@@Nichwar19 I think maybe you are misreading me. Just to be clear, Plant's voice on ALL of LZ's albums is killer. Even his worst song during those years was a better rock and blues voice than almost anyone around. But it did absolutely evolve over the years - both from natural evolution and probably from abuse too - just facts. Now in later years, as he has gotten older, his voice is much weaker, naturally as it would with most singers as they get older. But his experience and knowledge of music is so vast that he produces good music.
Just a thought... Covering a song Vs Sampling: Covering a song involves, dissecting the musical arrangement. Learning all the parts, and being able to play them in an interpretative way... Usually, some level of instrumental proficiency is required in order to capture the essence of the work that is being covered. For example. If you where to preform a piano cover of this song... You must first be able to play the piano, then, learn the chord changes as well as the rhythm pattern you plan to incorporate into your version of the song. Sampling involves copy and paste techniques in which a riff or passage is digitally copied and inserted into a pre-existing beat, or loop... Or... A loop or beat can be derived from said sample and used to construct an interpretation of the song. No instrumental proficiency is needed, just an understanding of the software and techniques utilized in creating this type of music. I understand that both approaches require a measure of talent, yet, I don't believe that you can correlate them and say that there is no difference between covering a song and sampling it... If I misunderstood your sentiment, I apologize. Love your Chanel... Subbed... Cheers...!
Plant's voice is hypnotizing. The guitar from the great Jimmy Page, the power of the best drummer in the History of Rock and Roll, the late Great John Bonham and the base, keyboard, and the organ from the talented John Paul Jones. They have it all!!! They work with each other and they work off of each other. They are so much in sync with each other it's just mind blowing!!!! This is a great song 🎵 All of Led Zeppelin's songs are just amazing. Plant's voice is so haunting you fall into it, every note every word your hooked!!!!
They are the only band I can think of off the top of my head whose songs often seemed to be seasonal. "Trampled Underfoot" is summer. "Achilles Last Stand" and "No Quarter" are winter. "The Rain Song" is spring. This song, and "Ramble On" and most of Led Zeppelin III are autumn...
I’m with you. But I think there’s a big difference between a hip hop song sampling a hook, putting a digital drum beat behind it and rapping three verses over it. Hip hop, which I love, for the most part is great when the lyrics and flow is great. And in this day and age, it’s pretty much impossible to make original music so I have no problem with rappers sampling older music. But, zeppelin doing a cover is great because of the musicianship. They’re actually playing instruments masterfully and really doing a totally different take on the songs. And the appeal of the singing isn’t the words, it’s the voice. Which is why I have no problem with zeppelin stealing lyrics because I’m not listening to the lyrics, it’s all about the singing. So I have no problem with sampling either way. But in terms of music, I think zeppelin is god tier. Not just better than rap but better than everyone except like Beethoven and chopin
Well said. I find it comical that people give digital musicians so much credit. Most rappers can’t play one instrument. But they are considered musical artists. That’s hypocritical in my opinion.
great comment Jackie. Cant argue with any of it, especially as its just your preference. Personally rhythm and syncopation is huge for me, it speaks to me in a way that the voice can't. For example the "stampede of percussion" with those amazing taiko drums at the end of Love lockdown, is for me, more impactful than what most singers can do. It all just depends on what speaks to you. Again if its simply a thing of preference, I totally understand. Some music speaks to people more than other genres however, what I think is hypocritical is some of the listeners who say one steals and the other doesn't. Also to speak on the musicianship argument, this may be because you haven't heard the right kind of production in Hip Hop. Take J Dilla, he is a composer. All he needs is one machine and he can take tiny snippets of other tracks and transforms them into something wholly different. That's musicianship to its fullest! He literally converts old ideas to something totally different. Also, a lot of black artists who were around during the beginnings of hip hop didn't have the luxury of being musicians. However, with one piece of technology (a sampling kit like the MPC) they can create new compositions without having to work with a team of musicians. Talk about making lemonade out of life handing you lemons. Loved your comment ❤
This isn’t a break up song. He never says anything negative about her. But something is “calling him” away. It’s like something else is tearing him away from her and he just can’t fight it anymore. It’s somber though, like he doesn’t want to leave her, but he just HAS to. Incredible. Sooooo much more intricate than modern break up songs. Great video!!
What is calling him is the road. The band is going back on tour. What young man never felt this. I don't want to go to work I want to stay home and make love all day with this woman....damnit! I have to go to work.
Your analysis of Zeppelin tracks are spot on, i've been listening to them for 50 years but you've grasped the essence of them on your first listen, nice work my friend.
Zeppelin couldn't "steal" from Yardbirds because Page was in The Yardbirds. So of course he brought his sound with him. Modernizing old blues songs from the 30s is not the same as pinching a "sample" from a classic rock song and calling it your own. My problem is appreciation. Plant and Page are huge blues fans. Rap stars and rap fans don't, in general, know classic rock. I hear reactors shocked all the time on UA-cam when they discover that a piece of music in a rap song they love was just stolen from a great rock band. The word stolen is used because the rap star didn't play the instruments and cover the song. They just cut out the part from a song played by other musicians and take it. The old blues songs Zeppelin did, they played all the instruments, modernized the sound and added to the lyrics. They didn't grab a song by an old blues guy (or woman), put the recording on their album and claim it was theirs now. That would have been weird
I call this one, “The All-Timer” because it is not only my favorite Zeppelin song but favorite all time. As well, the very first song I learned to play on guitar back in 1982. Regarding the “covers”; Page was a highly regarded studio musician and rejected joining several bands. He finally joined the Yardbirds after Clapton left as the Bass player. They tour the US and Beck burned out and quit, Page took over as lead guitar. After the tour, members left the band leaving Page with a contractual obligation to tour Scandinavia. He recruited another brilliant studio musician, John Paul Jones to play Bass. The Singer he wanted was unavailable but he recommended Plant who in turn recommended Bonham. When they first got together in a small room, they played, “Train Kept a Rollin’”. Legend has it, it was a total jam. They toured as, “The New Yardbirds”. When Keith Moon and John Entwhistle of The Who heard it, one of them said, “Jimmy Page’s career is going over like a lead balloon. Jimmy heard that and named the band as is, Led Zeppelin. They recorded both their first two albums in 1969 without much material. As a matter of fact, the second album was recorded throughout the US while on tour. But because the blues was a favorite of young English men, they “covered” these songs and credited either “Traditional” or themselves. I bought the first two albums and they both say Traditional and Produced by Jimmy Page. This song is a cover of Joan Baez’ folk song.
there is a difference between musians making music with instruments, and hip hop sampling, Jimmy Page when redoing Kashmir asked P Diddy "do you want to do this in G chord", Diddy replied " I don't know nothing about no G chord man", yet Diddy is considered a musian.
Yup,you're right, when its cover its cover...but,Plant was in love with american blues,so covering some old songs wasn't there for some personal, material gain,i think they wanted to reincarnate and introduce that music to everybody...i feel it was done with huge respect to elder blues masters,we talking about some 1920s blues ...imagine that...its one among all great things Zeppelin did... enjoy !
Because Led Zeppelin create original music or put a unique spin on all the songs they cover. Most Hip-Hop songs that borrow, don't change anything about the music they cover. Listen to all the Led Zeppelin covers and the original songs and see how entirely different they are.
You sum up Led Zeppelin like no other reviewer. You absolutely get them, and their genius. I’m 66 years old and this was the band of my youth and I had all their albums, plus I saw their last concert at Knebworth (in 1979…I believe). Thank you for, your brilliant insights, you are absolutely spot on with every observation you made in my opinion.
This is the first time I have allowed myself to even listen this song again after divorcing about a year ago...I've heard it many times over the years and always have loved it...the musicianship, the emotion, lyrics...I knew it was a song I wasn't ready to hear again yet...until today...and feeling it... but not in a bad way...healing is a slow process when heartbreak occurs...so many great songs have been written about it...took a giant step in moving on I feel...but the song...and the band Led Zeppelin are timeless...I agree with the other commenters to keep exploring LZ...and "turn it up!"
Dude big difference between what Zeppelin does and hip hop. Let's put it this way. I'm a untalented bum. But give me a pencil and my kids casio keyboard and my chances of creating a hip hop song are a hell of a lot greater than duplicating what Led Zeppelin can do.
Ive never met a rock fan who was impressed by a hip hop song but any hip hop fan will be impressed by a rock song, and sadly how ignorant they are of even the instruments they cant even identify a harmonica or mandolin sound.
@@hifijohn Perhaps rock fans should listen to more hip hop ? It's not my favourite genre, but even for me, it has its moments. I can play rock ( not making any big claims tho ), but I'd get slaughtered if I ever tried battling lines with some bar-spitting hip hop master. And I couldn't tell you what tech they're using, even though I use plenty of it myself in home recording. Not only that, but as soon as you step away from the standard instruments of modern popular music most people will struggle to identify them sooner or later. I sometimes play a cuatro de Puerto Rico... I quite often play a repenique... I very often play a bodhran. I don't expect people to pass a test on what instrument I just played. It is neither a competition nor is it an exam. And you have now met a rock fan who has been impressed by hip hop, qawwali, rebetika, kwela and forro, to name but a few. Raise your aim. Raise your game, Sir.
Raise my game? You mean lower my standards. I enjoy a huge variety of music. I even enjoy alot of old school rap like slick rick, big daddy cane, run dmc, third base and many more. But sorry today's hip hop is crap.
Stop people!!!! You bring shame to our generation! Join us in the 21st century. Rapping is an art. One which none of you haters could do. Wondering what the real problem is... 🤔!
When you do a react to “the rain song” by Led Zeppelin I’ll gladly subscribe. So many great songs (literally GREAT songs) in their entire catalog. However, to get the depth and breadth of their talent, that song is towards the pinnacle of artistic brilliance. Btw, that “Smokey Mountains” thing you said. Good comment. It puts you in a place full of mist and magic. Great observation.
Syed, you are absolutely right! As a boomer I love hip hop/rap. It's sad to see how closed minded my generation has become. It shows how great Zep was that artists are sampling their riffs today. Saw them in 1970❣️
Jayne you're super lucky to have seen them at that time! They must've been amazing. Also about the hip hop stuff, exactly! It may not suit you and your tastes but doesn't mean it doesn't have artistic credibility. No need to turn into a grinch lol
But did you notice the line “I know I’m never gonna leave you.” He’s going back and forth between having to leave her and having to stay. The great paradox of human relationships.
Great comments, Sayed! Regarding Plant’s voice, he had peak power 69-72, but also Page sometimes sped up and slowed down the tracks for effect, which also had an impact on how we perceive Plant’s voice, which was really produced as another instrument. The band’s aural sweep, production and arrangement genius really set them apart. Every song is a journey. And I continue to say that Page is a genius for putting all this together. And as you said, they were 100% ready to take over the world on the first note!
GREAT ANALYSIS!! YOU NAILED IT WHEN YOU SAID THE DRUMS SYNC MORE TO GUITAR THAN TO BASS!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT MADE ZEPPELIN THE UNIQUE BAND THAT THEY ARE AND WERE!!
Plant was a rock god! Made my 16 year old heart race for sure. His voice was amazing, and he still does sing. At 72 his musical choices are different, but his voice is still recognizable. I'm loving going through these songs with you. Having the lyrics on screen and hearing you talk about them makes me think about them in a new way. After hearing songs for 50 years you kind of stop paying attention.
You're the first reactor I've heard reference that he sings in a sexy way. He definitely does! His delivery, everything about the way he sings is hyper sexy.
His voice is one of the saddest voice changes in history probably. He destroyed it very soon and never got near to his prime. His prime voice was fcking special man its such powerful raw emotional voice and he gives you that emotion perfectly. It still will be the one of the best voices you ever heard im sure.
To use a photo analogy, sampling is like using an original photograph or portion of an original photograph in a new image composition...like a collage. Doing your own version of an existing song is more like taking a new photograph from a different perspective of the original subject. Two entirely different things.
Back in the Stone Age….late fifties…you used to have Beat poets (as in Beatniks) read their poetry…sometimes with guitar accompaniment. To me, hip-hop artists are basically doing street poetry to a beat. Many are incredibly talented wordsmiths who can create bars on the fly….They are word artists….but not musicians or vocalists. The samples provide their only claim to being music.
W. Geoffrey Spaulding... everything you said, I couldn't have said it better. Except for the "back in the stone age" remark LOL... only because I was born in the 50's
one of my favourite songs. after i was released from juvenile psychiatry my grandpa showed me the song in the car and the melody stuck in my head my whole childhood
Every artist in history have covered other artist songs. Lot of difference between sampling & covering a song & making it your own. “Babe, I’m Going To Leave You” was originally a folk song. Not much folk in Zepplins version.
I read an article, some years back, in which Led Zep said they were so impressed and proud of how this track turned out that it became their benchmark track to check all of their later recordings against. I can hear why. PS love your analysis man, great stuff..
I agree that hip hop is an art form. For those who doubt, ever made an artistic collage of disparate elements, but due to the intentional composition it makes sense? It's not apples to apples but we're still in the same neighborhood of interpretation and assimilation of empirical elements. Transforming into something new. Derivative is not a bad word. My two cents...love all good music....
such a great vocal but the line I ain’t jokin woman I got to ramble always makes me laugh. I used to use it on my wife when I had to leave the house and she was holding me up lol.
An interesting point is that when Page and Plant performed this piece live in the 90s, in the final part, after the phrase about "back home", Page played the first chords of Stairway to Heaven, which seemed to hint at a return to the roots
The members were age 19 to 24 I think, (off the top of my head) and not many in that age range are business/ legal savvy. They are criticized for not crediting the original composers/writers of some of their songs. Musicians are focused on making music. Record companies are concerned with profit and owning the rights to music. How that got past the company lawyers is open for debate,( either musical ignorance or just cutting legal corners). The thing is most fans knew they were old songs and some of us owned the original records of those artist. At any rate I do feel there is a difference between playing a song you like and just lifting/ sampling a recording . The love and appreciation may still be there for the original I suppose. That being said, musicians work with the material and inspiration at hand.
You said he has a "virility". Wait until you seem some live shows. Even when he moves in what we might call a feminine way, he is oozing sensuality. A real original.
I love Zep, best band of all time ? But then there is the Beatles, and then there is Miles davis, and John Coltrane (best visionary and jazz writer of all time) and then Marvin Gaye , what a writer and another visonary ... and the Beastie Boys, so knowing ! So much fun ! Music, our ears, are the winners here
Bantam got his drum set from Ludwig modeled after Vanilla Fudges drummer Carmine Appice....great band from NY...Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin opened for the Fudge in US and influenced them both...check out Vanilla Fudges covers ...you'll love them..
I think the reason there is a distinction between rock artists borrowing from the blues vs hiphop sampling music from rock is that rock artists dont simply record sample tracks and rhyme over them, rock artists change the compositions they borrow… oh and they are musicians who know how to play instruments, not just voice over recordings of others.
I'm not a hip hop fan, but what you're saying is the same as saying if I can't drive and I "borrow" a car without permission that's stealing, but if I'm a professional driver and I "borrow" a car without permission that's not stealing.
They are just gods!!!! They were young(19 & 20) and full of passion and rawness....and talent.....they practice a lot!!! And planned carefully their songs!!! Did several recordings of songs and picked the best and placed that version on their album mostly Jimmy Page did because he was the producer. So Imagine that this was your first time hearing music played and sung this way EVER!!! Right??? We were smitten with AWE!!!! Hahahaha..............lol..............hahahaaha......the sounds created such "Stank Faces" because the music went deep down on our sou;s and every fiber of our Being and we were in Love with Led Zeppelin males and females.....we were in love....and went out and bought their music and posters and played it a lot and went to their concert...I have gone to 3 Led Zeppelin concerts......AWESOME!!!! We made them the gods of Rock n' Roll and we watched them mature over time. Nice!!!! Peace Out!!!
Love how you do your reactions. Flamenco 👍👍 Page has said a much in some of his interviews. And he calls those dynamics you described "light and shade." ☺ All of LZ albums and official releases have impeccable audio and all produced by Jimmy Page. Headphones absolutely required. Thank you.
On texture: I think you’re right, there’s almost a thickness to that section where the guitar strums instead of picks. And the picking part is almost like a lace curtain blowing in an open window. Mist is definitely another texture in led zep, like a forest mist or that around a mountain peak.
To all of "those" comments, 3 things: 1. electronic keyboards, samplers, and other things producers use to create beats/backing tracks are instruments, they're just different types of instruments than guitar and drums, etc. They're inputting data, similar to inputting finger picking or drum hits, and get an output of sound just like other instruments. It doesn't require any physical talent, but requires just as much mental talent as well as ear talent, listening for what sounds best with each other. 2. The voice is objectively an instrument which rappers use rhythmically, which is musical. Just because there is rarely much melody used, doesn't mean there is no musicality to it. Also the flow and intonation of the voice is very different between different rappers, making each one unique. There's a reason Snoop Dogg sounds much different than say Nas. 3. Writing verses may not be inherently musical by itself, but it is considered poetry, so still artistic. Of course even as a big 90s hip hop fan, I would never say any of my favorite hip hop tracks is nearly as impressive musically as a band like Zeppelin, but to say it's not art or it's not music at all is outright moronic. I'm certain anyone who thinks that is not a musician themselves, or at least not one worth anyone's time
Led Zeppelin bar tenders of the best bar in the world, finest wine, pure spirits, best beer and most incredible cocktails Pink Floyd just absolute drug dealers, every narcotic or psychodelic known to man.
I’m a huge LZ fan and I do agree with on the sampling and a tribute of a song. Beastie Boys come to mind with sampling of LZ and I’m a fan of the Beastie Boys. A lot of bands have sampled and have had tributes to a lot of older songs not just LZ. What LZ does is elevates those songs with their musicianship and talent!
Exactly Matt well put!! All that matters is that you move people with what you do. Don't be a snob and look down on newer generations. Remember when people said Elvis was the devils music because he swung his hips when he danced...
Hip Hop is a seperate Genre , and its good as well , not all of them, there are legendary hip hop singers as well. No problem to use other songs for hip hop as well......
When Jimmy was assembling this band and met Robert, he invited him to his house to see how they'd get on and see if he'd chosen the right singer or not. During that meeting, Jimmy played Joan Baez's (pronounced "bi-ez") version of this song and told Robert that he had a plan to flip the song into a harder, heavier direction and asked if Robert could sing the lines. Robert's voice would change because of exactly what you said; care wasn't taken, smoking, drinking, plus age (you can't help but sound a bit differently than you did at 19) etc., and he ended up having vocal chord surgery sometime around late 1973 or early 1974. To be fair, even singers who take care of their voice sometimes have problems. No, Kurt Cobain was NOT a Zep fan; he basically considered their lyrics misogynistic, although he said he really did enjoy some of the melodies they'd written. Some of the credos for this band you'll hear are "light and shade", "tight but loose", and "whisper to the thunder" which is all a way of basically saying "dynamics". Each song is a journey unto itself. FYI - if you're going to go through album/track order, I subscribed and THANK YOU.
@@jmar7631 Awesome to see you J M! I'm sorry, though, that you'll read my same comments in regards to the songs, however, I do try to at least tailor them a bit to specifics mentioned in the reaction.
@@henriettaskolnick4445 No problem there. Since you most often do address comments made in the reaction, a new reaction conjures up different thoughts, all interesting. I didn't know the info. you shared about Cobain, so that was new to me. You're a fountain. :) Edited for clarity. ;)
@@j.kevvideoproductions.6463 I looked it up and agree with you. My comment was incorrect and I've edited it accordingly. Thanks for the clarification. :)
While it is true that Zep covers some old blues numbers they completely reinterpreted the songs and their musicianship is on a completely other level from the originals. They are actually real musicians. That is the main difference imho when comparing to someone who just samples a song using a recording and then just sing/rap over it. No musicianship involved.
It may be stated by others TL:DR but while this could be taken as he is leaving her for good I have heard Plant say in an interview this was more about the separation from his love that would occur when the band went back on the road to tour. The subtle hints are "leave you in the summertime"... i.e. when most bands toured back in the day and "don't you hear it calling..." a reference to the road calling him and the band. Basically this is a lament of young man who wants to call out and stay home and spend the day(s) in bed with his woman making sweet love to each other, BUT he knows he has to go to work.
I think it's all right to steal anything we want. As long as we make something different, with skill and talent. And as long as our new version, with its stolen samples, etc, makes people fly away in musical bliss 😊
loving the reactions man! Just a quick note...this is the second react to zeppelin where you mention Page, and unless you're talking about the guitar specifically, I think you mean Plant? Robert Plant is the vocalist. Keep it up! :)
Good point you make about music and sharing... Hip Hop isn't my thing but I don't think it's bad at all.. Each generation has it's own music... This is from a 69 year old git who has lived through quite a few changes,,, Loving your reactions... and yes, I have subscribed. Keep on rocking.
I’ve never understood people who criticize other artists for covering and sampling. Artists, in any form have been doing this since the beginning of time. It only became a problem when money and labels became involved. What’s important is what you bring to the table in your reinterpretation. That’s what Blues and Folk music were all about - reinterpretation. Zeppelin, Stones, Cream, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, SRV, Santana and more all built their careers on a blues footprint. Your comment on plants voice is on point. Plant destroyed his voice in the first half of the decade. He had to get vocal chord surgery to remove nodules in 1973. Sadly his voice was never the same again. Eventually he had to change his singing approach and by 77, 79 he sounded great but in a different way. People will say otherwise but Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl were big fans of Zep, especially Dave Grohl (Bonham is his biggest influence). Kurt probably didn’t care for the questionably misogynistic aspect, but I’ve heard him on recorded interviews saying their music was integral to Nirvana’s sound.
You are misrepresenting here. A cover is a person's (or group's) interpretation of a song, sung on it's first release by another artist. On many occasions the cover version is a complete re-think, as in Joe Cocker's cover of The Beatles' "A Little Help From My Friends". Sampling, which I think is what people are criticising means taking the track as performed by the original artist and incorporating it into the track. Many years ago a young person told me how much they liked Coolio's "Gangsta Paradise", especially the chorus. I told them that the strings, backing chorus and vocals of that part were an exact copy of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" and maybe they should give that a listen too. This track of Coolio's was good, but it owed a more direct debt to Stevie Wonder than Joe Cocker did to The Beatles.
Super hyped that you're going through the entire Zeppelin catalogue! I'm here for it! 🙂 If you like Plant's voice, you should try listening to some Guns n Roses. Axl Rose also has a really unique voice, a six-octave range, and a style all his own. But he's also different enough from Plant that it's really hard to say one is better than the other.
Long Red by mountain is the most sampled song ever.song was played at Woodstock. The albums version is on Leslie West first album called Mountain.would love to see your reaction to that. Also MTN Nantucket Sleighride was very hard and very influential ...and has an ominous true story behind it.thanks
Check out the live version from Danmarks Radio. It's one of 4 songs from their show. That show is my all time favorite live performance of them. It's so good.
Really digging your channel dude! Just a quick comment on the first part of commentary here on the stealing of tracks etc. and side note I don’t hate hip hop but I think there’s a definitive difference. Whereas bands will steal from one another and completely cover someone else’s song it’s still them playing their instruments their own way. But more commonly in hip hop someone’s taking the audio of someone else’s performance, sampling it, then turning it into something else. So often the results are brilliant either way, is either wrong or better? I doubt that debate will ever end, but it’s in no way the same thing.
For those critical of hip hop. Not a fan. I've flirted with genre, and it's just not my thing. And it is brilliant music! The crafting of beats, the talent of wordsmithing, the sound production, all of it! Like any genre, there's 'good' and 'bag' hip hop, and that's also subjective. While not my jam, it is a wonderfully deep and inspired form of music!

Best Debut album ever imo
Totally agree!
Yup. My all time favorite album from the day I heard it when I was 12 when the album came out. 👍❤🤙
I do agree that happens but sometimes it results on some great tracks even though I'm with you.
@@sourisvoleur4854 Not if the composer hasn't been compensated for their work.

Jimmy Page played this for Robert Plant when they first met. This is the concept Page had for his new band. Slow gentle parts punctuated by explosions of thunder. Light and shade he called it.
Thank you. I love all the history. I saw them live in the mid 70’s. 3 hours of bliss. I love them still. So do my children and grandchildren.
Jimmy got the band together with this song in mind specifically. He said he wanted play light and dark, heavy and gentle. That's called dynamic(s).
Dazed and Confused off that album is My Favorite Led Zeppelin Song OAT, its perfect to me
This is my absolute favorite Led Zeppelin song and that's saying a lot because I have so many.
It's really a beautiful declaration of love to the blues.
Led Zeppelin played their own instruments, no auto voice. Something rap and hip hop can’t say. Talent rules over computer generated crap.
A lot of rap and hip hop artists don’t use auto-tune. That’s generally something pop singers use.

Rap's just bad rhymes accompanied by a boring beat. Its as simple as that.
I absolutely love his singing on this and the fact that it's mostly acoustic but still achieve that intensity in the hard sections. Just wonderful. Glad to see that you could appreciate a lot of that.
One of the most beautiful songs in the world...
I heard their songs a thousand times before and I am still unable to pause ANY of Led Zeppelin songs. Ever.
Yep!! I was just thinking that same thing. Timeless!!
One of the most brilliant covers of all time, in my humble opinion.
I hear Hendrix did a job on Dylan's song Watchtower though, but this is defo up there
@@SyedRewinds Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is a masterpiece.
I think the argument is "people redoing the song in their own style" vs "copy and paste this person's song and just rap over it"
Just a thought... Covering a song Vs Sampling:
Covering a song involves, dissecting the musical arrangement. Learning all the parts, and being able to play them in an interpretative way...
Usually, some level of instrumental proficiency is required in order to capture the essence of the work that is being covered. For example.
If you where to preform a piano cover of this song... You must first be able to play the piano, then, learn the chord changes as well as the rhythm pattern
you plan to incorporate into your version of the song.
Sampling involves copy and paste techniques in which a riff or passage is digitally copied and inserted into a pre-existing beat, or loop...
Or... A loop or beat can be derived from said sample and used to construct an interpretation of the song. No instrumental proficiency is needed,
just an understanding of the software and techniques utilized in creating this type of music.
I understand that both approaches require a measure of talent, yet, I don't believe that you can correlate them and say that there is no difference
between covering a song and sampling it...
Remembering when this hit the FM stations everyone was simply BLOWN AWAY. We'd never heard ANYTHING like it! Thanks for the memories!🙂
Not just better than rap but better than everyone except like Beethoven and chopin
dont forget bach, everything starts with bach.
Well said. I find it comical that people give digital musicians so much credit. Most rappers can’t play one instrument. But they are considered musical artists. That’s hypocritical in my opinion.
@@hifijohn "Aaaaahh, Bach"
You are so right!
great comment Jackie.
Just a priceless reaction- you can hear what I've always hoped everyone else would hear - fire 🔥brother!
Thanks again mate!
They were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band.
Try Since I've Been Loving You by them. Arguably the greatest heavy blues track ever made.
I totally agree Robert is the goat of lead singers!!! Especially when Robert was young, forget about it!!! Luv your Zeppelin reactions bro. Rock on!!¡
This is the first time I have allowed myself to even listen this song again after divorcing about a year ago...I've heard it many times over the years and always have loved it...the musicianship, the emotion, lyrics...I knew it was a song I wasn't ready to hear again yet...until today...and feeling it... but not in a bad way...healing is a slow process when heartbreak occurs...so many great songs have been written about it...took a giant step in moving on I feel...but the song...and the band Led Zeppelin are timeless...I agree with the other commenters to keep exploring LZ...and "turn it up!"

Zepp hypnotizes me. So much so that I want ALL of their tracks at my funeral or I'm not going. That's final
This band is a pillar of masculinity in look, virility, and raw licks from all directions.
Plant was 19 years old during this recording before touring. No real stress on his voice.
But did you notice the line “I know I’m never gonna leave you.” He’s going back and forth between having to leave her and having to stay. The great paradox of human relationships.
Personally I think it's about him going on tour. Just my interpretation.
Hip Hop isn’t musicians, it’s computers & prerecorded SAMPLES. What Hip Hopper can play instruments like Rock & Rollers.
This song really shows how much Plant owes Janis Joplin for style of execution.
This music is over 50 YO! Should have been there when it came out....we were speechless.

A brilliant emotional track...just genius!
No bad song ever Led Zeppelin ❤
It was a perfect storm when these four came together. And, yeah, Robert was popular with the ladies.
such a great vocal but the line I ain’t jokin woman I got to ramble always makes me laugh.
I agree with you about sampling after your compelling argument. I salute you!
You said he has a "virility". Wait until you seem some live shows. Even when he moves in what we might call a feminine way, he is oozing sensuality. A real original.

To all of "those" comments, 3 things:
1. electronic keyboards, samplers, and other things producers use to create beats/backing tracks are instruments, they're just different types of instruments than guitar and drums, etc.
I'm certain anyone who thinks that is not a musician themselves, or at least not one worth anyone's time
Enjoying your breakdowns! Led Zep and Pink Floyd, to me, and alot of people.....the best of the best. Keep it going!
Led Zeppelin bar tenders of the best bar in the world, finest wine, pure spirits, best beer and most incredible cocktails
Pink Floyd just absolute drug dealers, every narcotic or psychodelic known to man.
Always amazing!
Found you because of TooL. Sub'd to see what you're about. Love what you're doing.
@@SyedRewinds and not all of his music was original , Hound Dog comes to mind.
Hey there, Henrietta. I've also subscribed. I really like the way SyedBhai reacts to songs. More depth here. :)
:) Edited for clarity. ;)
To be fair, Kurt actually liked Zeppelin's music, it was a lot of the lyrics he had problems with.
There is a huge difference between covering a song and sampling a song.
My favorite from Led Zeppelin
If you like Plant's voice, you should try listening to some Guns n Roses.
You will probably love “Ramble on”.
What jimy page is playing is a style called Travis picking it comes from folk music.
