  • This is MRL East Coast Rail Link or shortly for ECRL, and it is one of Malaysia’s largest infrastructure developments ever. It has a total line length of over 665 kilometers, starting from Kota Bharu all the way to Westport.

    ECRL would be a game changer for Malaysia. It would unlock most the interior & unproductive area of peninsular. More over, Malaysia didn't need to pay tolls to transport the goods from west coast to east coast.

      @@BehindAsia Sadly the backward-thinking folks have only designed the future Malacca bridge for road and not for rail. =( They could move so much more goods and people with a rail bridge.

    I likec to go to East Coast for holiday... But driving from KL to East coast is a nightmare.. With ECRL, We can have our East coast vacation anytime

      Similar project will be coming in Indian State, Kerala (K rail Silverline project) - 532 km from Kasaragod to Capital Trivandrum . It takes around 10-12 hrs now to travel between these two place right now but will be reduced to under 4 hrs. Difference is that Krail project will have max speed of 220km/hr. DPR is sent to central govt and approval is delayed but will be approved soon..Est completion time 2025-26

    Hope this project will stimulate east coast economic activities and development..and not centralized in klang valley only. traveling by car 12 hours from klang valley to east coast during raya holiday is a nightmare. time is gold

      problem is the scarce population in Borneo, plus ECRL is only being built because of China’s ambition to bypass Singapore Strait. It’s their insurance.

    What brought changes in West Coast Peninsular Malaysia
    1) North South Highway
    2) Penang bridge
    A lot of people were also against both of the above projects. Now no one can imagined without the highway and Penang bridge. Hopefully ECRL would bring the economic benefits in not so distant future

      Yes. I was one of those naysayers with regards the Penang Bridge back in the 1980s and if I recall right, the opposition (political parties and NGOs) were expressing concerns that it would become a "white elephant" but now that the opposition is the Penang state government, there are two Penang bridges and a proposed undersea tunnel.
      Same naysaying with regards the LRT lines and monorail in the Klang Valley back in the 1990s, which are a great public convenience and very affordable today, which is heavily used, except less now due to COVID-19. Also RE the MRT to Kajang, which is packed especially during peak periods, though perhaps less now due to COVID-19.

      The first phase of MRT Putrajaya will start operation in Nov 2021.
      MRT Putrajaya is often termed as MRT 2
      MRT 1runs from Sv Buloh to Kajang and starts operation in 2017

      PAS had been too radical these days... they actually do acknowledged that they play a crucial part in developing their areas of influence like Kelantan but their radicalism had taken their ignorance to the next level. They should've to recall back the history of golden age of islamic empires, where while europe was still in the dark ages Islamic empires like Abbasid and Ummayah caliphates flourished. I'm advocating for equal development for both coasts respectively, and PAS must wake up to serve the people.

      wait till the fares are announced, then we can start to comment whether it is a GOOD transport option for car-driven Malaysians. MRTs and LRTs and double-track Kommuters are a good sign of what ECRL is in store for the future. Just how well a game changer did those manage to perform?

    This project was Initiated by Najib Razak but due to negative narratives of an old man, M, this project was delayed. Good to see it is going smoothly now

      @Random Potato Infrastructure and development cannot be mixed with politics. The old man proudly said he saved the cost because he canceled several stations along the route, changed the route to avoid long tunneling job in Bentong/Gombak. Of course the cost will be reduced. Canceling or delaying the project will paint the bad image to the Belt and Road initiative. That was why NED was happy as reported. His cronies also benefited when the new route goes south. So, better not to talk politics for the equal development of the nation.

    I believe that it will bring the economic benefits claimed, especially if and when the ECRL is connected to that leg of the MSR from Bangkok, when it will enable rail transport all the way to Kunming, China.

    This megaproject will pay itself many times over in the coming decades. The Straits of Malacca is too congested for Chinese goods to sail through Singapore.

    Such a shame this rail project has been hijacked by the opposition party (which ruled the country for a short period), they had done smear campaigns and cutting the budget & specs (PLUS all other rail projects in Malaysia) to make them look good at saving Malaysia; and wanted to create another national car brand instead...
    Still, quite a lot of educated urban folks hate this project because it is going to less advanced states, saying this will be a white elephant project.

    I have worked on rail projects in Malaysia in the past and I can say from experience that this project is just what the country needs and should be a great success. However, I am concerned that the Chinese are so heavily involved in it as I suspect that they are likely to impose rather stringent financial maintenance conditions on the Malaysian Government upon completion.

    Actually it won't change because it only stopped at Kota Bharu. Originally they stopped at Pengkalan Kubor So the Thai People Easily Come to KL. But now they only stopped at Kota Bharu.
    So they should Extand to Pengkalan Kubor so Economic will be better.

    Hopefully the fare is acceptable worth it for most of times. It will compete with road infrastructure. Petronas proved the cost is high before this.

      ETS from KL to Padang Besar cost around RM80 for normal seats & RM110 for business seats. i think ECRL maybe will slightly more expensive cause faster train. maybe ticket will cost RM90++ normal seats & RM120++ for business seats. I hope it will be affordable for everyone to encourage them to take train

      The tickets will be price competitively with ETS. Took business class ETS from KL - Alor Setar @ rm150 and all seats in BClass r fully booked. Demand r high for ETS. ECRL would do juz fine. There r millions of immigrants from East Cost tht reside in Klang Valley. These already enough to sustain demand.

    I hope that if the ecrl route from Port Klang, he will build a bridge because he wants to pass in my village area, Klang long region, his area. It's a bit difficult to connect if he builds a train on land, so he has to build it like in Japan. on the ground because the area there is open land unlike in Klang the land area is mostly dense so it is better to build a bridge, moreover it is the final station built in the future, it could be an issue for the surrounding residents

      If there are any issues affecting residents such as yourself, you can bring it up with the relevant authorities or your MP and propose that the line be run on elevated tracks or routed through less densely populated areas.

    they should have done a HSR that connects every states in the peninsula. and plan another major HSR project with Indonesia to connect the Borneo Island if possible the whole ASEAN. if China can do it, we can too.

      1st of all HSR is expensive. I dont think folks in Kedah prepare to fork out rm300 for a journey from ASetar to KL. Thts y MY 1st HSR is to link KL - SG cuz these two cities are wealthy enough to sustain the route even at rm300 - rm400 tickets per journey. 2nd, China is has trillion in Reserve. Then CAN build as many HSR they want with the gigantic size of their economy.

    Why the decision on standard gauge? Isn't Malaysia using meter gauge? I'm not from Malaysia, but since this project expects freight use too, I would think a common gauge is even more important so freight trains from elsewhere can use as well.

      Standard gauge is more or less international standard for both passenger and freight trains, used in Britain, US, China etc. Do not know what you referring as common. India board gouge or Russian gauge?
      The long term plan is a pan South East Asia rail network connecting with China, all Standard Gauge.

      Most if not all ASEAN members use the meter gauge though to link to the Eurasian systems, this gauge is an issue. Being located south of China, the immediate is via China to the rest of Eurasian landmass, then the international standard gauge of 1.483 will jive with China and EU, though in between you still have the Soviet gauge of 1.520 m to cope with. I believe the proposed China-Russian HSR is based on the international gauge.
      As far as ASEAN members are concerned, notwithstanding their meter gauge, the axle load rating also differ, hence the complication of the issue of standardization across ASEAN! The China-Laos link is based on standard international gauge which will the same when the Bangkok line is linked to it! It would appear only Malaysian lines are new but with the exception of the ECRL line, the rest is meter gauge!

      @@LexDomo The original plan which Najib presented was single tracking for phase one. I think since the train schedule is not like a commuter train, so that is why it's single tracking. So the schedule is like 3-4 train service per day. So whopping cost given was actually a single track cost. Just imagine if it's double track.

    Large infrastructure projects always have its pros & cons, what more when it’s a railway project. Railway returns are always challenging during the operation stage & this makes Governments apprehensive to invest. However if railways are seen as infrastructure preparing the nation for people’s mobility, jobs creation & enhancing the economic competitiveness, then it’s definitely worth the investment.

      the hsr would be the ones connecting kl to johor to singapore..the ecrl did not replace the hsr..ecrl n hsr are two separate projects but the hsr project was put on hold by ph govt n eventually got cancelled of by the next gov.

      Geography wise, it's 50/50 probability of east coast would be as populous as the westside, since the terrain is mostly comprised of untouched forests, marshes, peat bogs and mountains. Population tends to centralize in coastal areas than in the interior, but areas in central pahang like temerloh and maran may experience rapid development from this project, including bentong, given credit to its proximity to KL and the former. Bentong is most likely to enter a drastic transition from a sleepy town to a bustling satellite city of KL, just like Seremban, since both are quite close to KL. Aside of this, another initiative to ensure both coasts are equally developed is to promote foreign investment to promising cities of the eastside like Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu. Next, besides the Klang-Kuantan line, rail connections between ports of the west coast and the east coast must be increased, so my suggestions would be Tanjung Pelepas - Kuantan and Penang - either to Pengkalan Chepa or to Kuantan as well.

    Is a case of opening up the less developed part of peninsula Malaysia. Freight will benefit more than passenger as local may not afford the fares. Only tourist and foreigner. Local politics and religion may affect trade.

      For local passengers, travel to the east coast by own or public road transport will costs more and time consuming (time is money). Further, this is not a HSR, the fare at the most will be equal to the business class KTM electric train in the west coast. Talking about politics, sure enough, the economic aspects of this project will be effected in the event the dumb Oppositions once again take control of the government through the general election.

      I really doubt the train can have any chance of touching 400kmh, unless you are talking about a one-stop trip from KL to SG or viceversa. If you put in some stations n between, guess the train has to start decelerating even before achieving 200kmh, else how to make sure train can stop at Melaka without misshap?
      Last time before SG Buloh Kepong MRT was completed… they say it can achieve 70KMH, when finally commissioned to run in real life, the only stretch where it can briefly touch 70 is somewhere between Kelana and Sg Buloh. Within KL, I see most of the stretches get an average 35kmh? Because there are many stretches where the train has to climb a gradient and manuveur snaky curves, you cannot push that to 70 without jumping the rail.

      A lot of things need to factor in before deciding to invest huge amount of rakyat's money. If the government build such ECRL from Kuching to Tawau, how long do you think the project will reach ROI considering the number of population in Sabah & Sarawak plus Brunei. At least for the east coast the container cargo train from North Port to Kuantan Port will sustain & expedite the ROI since it's expected to generate 70% income. The cargo train will cut short time taken to ferry containers from Europe, Middle East & South Asia to China. Unload at North Port and reload again at Kuantan Port for faster shipping to China. Only 30% is contributed by commuters.

      An eye opener to the naysayer in Malaysia. China is investing heavily in Pakistan (part of their B&R initiative) to have land route for the oil and gas from middle east straight to South-Western China. They will no longer need Straits of Melaka. We have to catch up and develop the east coast especially its ports. It is a two pronged strategy just in case Thailand gets go ahead with its southern part development of ports and railway linking in the east and west of Kra Isthmus, so Kota Baru Port (Tok Bali) will be used to export our goods instead of Port Klang. It is our long term strategy.

      Well, ETS and ECRL are both semi high speed rails, which have the speed higher than conventional rail (around 100 - 199 km/h) but no higher than a HSR. In order to achieve HSR status, the rolling stock's operational speed must exceed 200 km/h and above. But i also hope that the government must reconsider the HSR and Bandar Malaysia project.

    Definitely a game changer to port of Singapore for ships from Japan & China bound for West Asia, EU & Africa. Ships from Japan and China just need to unload their goods at Port of Kuantan in the east coast & use the trains to transfer them to port Klang on the west coast to continue their journey to the west via the Indian ocean bypassing Port of Singapore saving time & money. Smart move Malaysia & China.     Don't make me laugh? Malaysia commuter volume isn't enough to sustain the running costs of this redundant transport system. Look at the MRT and LRT system, which is located in the most populous region of Malaysia, how many times did the management has to change hands, and continually require government subsidy and bailout in order to keep running. I have seen better days where the LRT runs with 6-8 coaches per trip, now they only have 4 at most. And talking about spillover effects, LOL. I have yet to see any Mall or appartmet complex that builds next to a rail station being able to flourish. Please, Malaysians are so used to driving in their cars and stopping right in front(lazy to walk) of the shop they intend to patronise, that their legs arebecoming less and less capable of walking far distances. Talk about rail stations, you need to do a lot of walking after alighting from the train.

      I don't agree we have many local capable companies. Most importantly the local must be hired to be part of the project instead of importing people from other countries to build this.

    Nope... This project is not going to be a game changer project. The project goes to the most unproductive part of Malaysia. Even the decade old completed highway is still virtually empty. Only the Port Klang - Kuantan part make economic sense.

      @@stephenlock7236 The better alternative is to build high speed rail from JB to the border of Thailand. At least this is more viable and prudent than ECRL.
      Kelantan and Terengganu always have been underperformers. The East-West highway didn't spur much economic activities. East coast highway also failed.

Likewise, there is already a rail line to KB too, ... and it's the most unproductive and unprofitable rail line in KTM history. KTM have been subsidizing this existing line endlessly for decades.

    I afraid this is a disaster, in many terms including financial. The project unlikely to cause increase of business activities. The route is resided mostly of Malays -- very limited business activities, except that the Malays, would want free service for personal benefits only. I see this obviously a political plot to put big public fund to gain votes.

Remember what happened with Srilanka, Pakistan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Montenegro (to build a national highway), as part of the BRI. These countries (corrupt government) borrowed a lot of money and could not pay to China. China will take over your country very soon and your future generation will bear the burden. Indonesian people are now start realizing and fight against Chinese investments. So, if you love your country, wake up before you blaming yourself and being Chinese puppet.

    China is financing in large part. Malaysia is already caught in China’s trap, and there’s no escape from it. The terms are very damaging to the economy. This project is being mainly financed by China Exim Bank. Country need to reduce the national debt and liabilities - which 80 per cent of its GDP. This project is not going to serve any purpose, it is not going to give any returns. Interestingly, Malaysia couldn't afford to terminate the agreement as it would mean a compensation of RM21.78 billion would have to be paid to Beijing.

      Japan has debt double of its GDP. Singapore'sdebt is more than 100% of it s GDP.
      Malaysia's debt is more than 95% in RM

    Large infrastructure projects always have its pros & cons, what more when it’s a railway project. Railway returns are always challenging during the operation stage & this makes Governments apprehensive to invest. However if railways are seen as infrastructure preparing the nation for people’s mobility, jobs creation & enhancing the economic competitiveness, then it’s definitely worth the investment.
