    We just posted our first "State of Kiana" update. With four weeks to go (in real time), we are sharing our preperations and progress and emotional state with a weekly video diary until we leave on our Patreon page. We'll also be doing a live/cocktail hour before we cross. Check it all out at www.patreon.com/breakingwavessailing.

    Thats some pretty sound advice from Grace! The rewards are worth it cause you earned them. Good video! All those "comforts" will pay dividends!

    A partner that can sew, that’s a huge plus. I can pretty much do anything except sew.

    Ice maker rocks! I have one also. For $100 thought about carrying a spare 'just in case'.

    My very first boat upgrade was an ice maker. Bought it before I even bought the boat 🤪

    Cockpit light needs a colour changing led so you can have it red at night and white during the day!!

    Do the twinkle lights go red by chance? That’ll be super useful if they do! Minor but important: do you have a chart where you can plot your daily or twice daily position just in case the instruments fail (assuming your compass and compass light works as well)? Stoked for you guys to jump the pond. It’s a great experience. Don’t forget to shift your main and jib halyards by an inch or so each couple/few days to prevent chafe! Tons of other little things to remember, but you’ll do great, and then you’ll see a paradise pop up out of the sea in what feels like the middle of nowhere, and it’ll blow your fricken minds!

      They do not but we do have other red light sources in the cockpit :). For postion tracking we have our Raymarine Chartplotter as primary and Open CPN (separate GPS puck) as back up along with Navionics on both of our phones. Open CPN have electronic version of paper charts downloaded. We have both Starlink and Irridum go and we have an independent battery/solar system to
      Power things up if we have a peor issue on our main system.
      The main system. No paper, but enough redundancy and independent systems that we don't feel the need for it. If the satellites all failed, we'd be recording our speed/course and trying to track our position on Open CPN... but honestly if that happens, in this day in age, I think we might be better off staying out at sea!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. Continuing to give us videos while you do these last minute projects before you leave. Do you intend to provide videos on a frequent basis while crossing. I know StarLink has really changed the ability to do something like that. It beats the old, 28 days later here we are in French Polynesia. Stay safe. ❤🙏

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks Steve! Ideally
      We would have a couple videos edited and uploaded before the crossing that we can release during, but with so much still left to go before we go we'll probably struggle jsut to do stick with our current posting "schedule". Also Starlink is really expensive to use offshore so we won't be uploading long form videos but we might post a few shorts and Instagram reels e route :)

    You are going to be arriving in French Polynesia at a great time. Try to stay there as long as possible. You will be the first Blue Water people surfing Moorea and Tahiti. I think there are ways to stay for a year. Get into the culture.

    You guys should have put red lights in cockpit so you don't lose night vision.

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  3 місяці тому +1

      We have red compass glow and our instruments in night mode out enough red light - we've thought about covering the overhead light with red for the crossing but not too concerned about it

    Take it from an old timer sailor. Once you can't see land anymore ditch the clothes save on laundry and nothing like feeling true freedom. I realize you have a UA-cam channel to run but trust me you have an opportunity of a lifetime. Enjoy your younger years.

    Do you have some red lighting in the cockpit for night passage

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  3 місяці тому +1

      Yep our compass glows
      Red and our instruments have a nihht mode that gives off a dim red glow. Tends to be enough for us (we also have red head lamps)

      Atolls and reef passes make for far better anchorage/surf opportunities then the coast of the America's. Love
      Those places for land based surfing but South Pacific is way more ideal for a surf and sailing adventure.
