    I never thought I would experience a sewing emotional rollercoaster. What an odd feeling. That said, I am enormously proud of Alie for tackling, and conquering, such a daunting project! Well done, to the both of you!!

    Ha ha. You can hear how please Alie is with herself at the end of the video after completing the stack pack. Good job Alie - it's always great to see someone tackle something they admit is not their forté and then pull it off. Nobody cares if it's perfect of not anyway.

    Congratulations on all of the PROGRESS that you have made! Also, thank you, thank you, thank you for showing all of the trials, tribulations, and frustrations of boat work! I feel your pain. It helps me feel a little better about all of my set backs and frustrations on all of our boat projects. Until next time, fair winds my new UA-cam friends 😃😎

    Double check your vhf antenna, cables and its connections. You send and receive AIS through them. Thanks again for sharing!

    • @johnparker3065

      I think he's on the right track as Ben seems to have the network running. A lot of older installs combined VHF and AIS antennas. For most people this has worked fine....for coastal day cruising. It seems the more connections in coax cables the greater chance salt water intrusion. To start on the antenna troubleshooting, you know the receive function has problems. What about the transmit? Energize the system, and go to a neighbor boat and check their list. Wait 15 minutes for it to populate, The data sentences are long and slow, especially in populated marinas. Also, get a handle for the Tigress; much easier and safer to control the drop AND, Alie can pull it back up with one hand/arm WHEN the switches dump on you again. Kiana - A great boat, finally going to do what it's the designer intended. We have the Sceptre's cousin, a Nordic. Started our voyage in 2020 from PNW. Currently lying Kona, HI. Fair winds.

    Think sowing is like welding in doors with no smoke ( hopefully none from the machine or you). .. Its all about tension. Only thing that got ya - is tension as I see it. And that comes with use so you nailed it running it for just one day! Mom should be proud.

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  4 місяці тому

      Thank you 🥰 I did have a hard time with tension for sure. That and the eye of the needle was a tad too small for the UV proof thread, so it kept shredding it which was infinitely annoying

    Hats off Alie. Have quilted since young but bought a vintage Brother machine to do upholstery. Much harder than it looks sewing multi layers, especially heavy cloth, and you slayed it. Cool you are there with Calico and hoping you'all can cross together.

    That round disk needs to turn (1/8-1/4) each time the button is pressed. This is called wipe, and is important to keep electrical contacts clean.

      That's interesting, I didn't see any mechanism that would cause it to turn

    Another way to keep track of how much chain out is to put a colored wire tie on the chain every 5 fathoms (~ 10 metres).

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  4 місяці тому

      We have that! Great idea! I sewed coloured webbing along every 20 ft and 100. The hard part though is when I drop it all at once it goes so fast I can’t see the webbing. But yea it’s smart to have it for sure!

    Great job on the stack pack. If person is willing to learn how to sew they will save themselves some serious money in the long run when it comes to upgrades on a boat. Looks like your were getting the hang of it. Wish I had a heavy duty sewing machine.

    I feel your pain! I have done some sewing, I'm not great at it, especially when the thread or machine don't cooperate. You're doing great!

  • @marcericdavis
    @marcericdavis 4 місяці тому +1

    You probably already figured this out, but when you are taking thread off the large spool on to the bobbin or small spool, it's important how you do it. The thread needs to unwind off the large spool and not feed off the top of the large spool. If the thread feeds off the top, it will get a twist to it. You can see the line twisting up at 9:45. That will cause jams and may be why the bobbin broke?

    • @BreakingWavesSailing
      @BreakingWavesSailing  4 місяці тому

      Yep I think you are right! This machine is actually missing a spool holder which doesn't help ahah.

    What do you do with all your free time Alie (LOL). That's the tricky part of electronics Ben, the actual fault can show up a long way from the problem causer. Hope the repairs go well and you can start chasing, instead of breaking, waves as you head west.

    Ok Ive given sewing a shot. What does it mean when you have that knotted birds nest on the bottom? Is that a thread tension issue or feeding too fast?
