I remember reading once in an Early American magazine in the section about insuring family antiques. People would send in pictures of their heirlooms and ask how much they should insure them for. On lady sent in a picture about an unusual one handled soup tureen which had the pride of place at family gatherings. The magazine wrote back: "You should insure your chamber pot for $500."
Justine is not very smart. Oranges are a good source of vitamin C, which helps fight a Cold! Also, I would NOT stick orange peel up my nose!! ~Janet in Canada
@@aliciamesa5382 We're still much better off than we would have been with covid in the past. It feels slow but it's actually incredible that in a year we went from zero vaccine or treatments to the public receiving vaccinations! Science is amazing.

No wonder Lucy was ill, going to bed without her night cap to protect her from the night air! And I was suprised Justine hadn't used the beef for beef tea for Lucy - or would that have been too many flavours?!
Oh No! It's the plague! Quick, Justine, get out the garlic and make her some chicken soup! That's better than anything for a Chill with a fever! Curse that dratted rain! Poor Lucy! (ROFL!) This a classic reason why you shouldn't go walking in the rain without a coat or an umbrella!!! I love this video! ~Janet in Canada
For the 1830s the way the relationship between the maid and mistress is portrayed is very interesting and probably not representative as the maid seems to be too familiar. However, such a maid must have been a real gem!
Justine was actually more than a maid. She was thrown out of the convent (from her own account) and her mother was friends with Mrs. Stephenson, so Justine was put to work.. she was a bit rebellious..! LOL She was enjoying the ‘orange peels up the nose’ a bit too much, methinks..!! LOL (I was too..!)
Justine’s Mother was related or friends with the Stephensons (Justine may have known them in childhood), Justine was in the Convent for some reason and the Stephensons offered to take her in, in exchange for domestic duties. So she was more of a Protégé than a domestic servant, I’d imagine Lucy and Benjamin wouldn’t be as lax with her if she was just someone they hired (although Benjamin did tell her off for being behind with the laundry).
Put a little opium in my cough syrup I'd be happy. Im sure it helped with the cough along with the honey. These days we use citrus to get better from the vitamin c but back then they didn't know better. I learn so much in these videos. Thank you.
I would have first washed and finely grated (rasp) the orange and lemon outsides into a bowl and also poured boiling water over those peels into another bowl after extracting the juice from them. Let steep like a tea and also then use a mortar and pestle to squash as much out of those softened peels as possible. Then can add some tea leaves (camomile or other). To my surprise, I actually had some tiny camomile plants growing in my yard naturally. I wonder if someone seeded the edge of my walkway at one time? In a bowl add some honey and maybe some crushed natural dried leaves of anything that helps with sleep (we will do without the opium, thank you very much). Now into the honey bowl, sieve the boiled tea/peelings liquid, add the extracted juices from the citrus, and you have a few cups of citrus concoction (that might be better than shoving orange peels up the nostrils). Save the rest for later that evening and the next morning to be reheated. Some scrambled eggs and a piece of toasted bread with it will build up strength and then a long nap will get things back to normal in a few days. Light foods, plenty of liquid, and a lot of sleep are the answer to getting well again. I have a health 'nut' friend who used to get colds often and she would go out for a jog/run near the beginning of it instead of resting and would take twice as long to get better. At the first inkling of a sniffle, I, on the other hand, would have a hot bath, get into bed with an easy-to-eat meal, and would be better by morning. I only got a cold about once every 5 years when she was silly enough to come near me and share her raging cold! I've always been interested in the properties of natural plants but rely on not getting sick in the first place by not taxing my body to keep itself warm when exposed to the illnesses of others. Common sense works well. Yes, I would have been the woman in her cottage in the woods with natural plants drying all over the place. The men would eventually have come to charge me as a witch!
Oh this is soooo cool ..... I love your videos 😻 really ..... But please upload videos with in a days at least.....not after weeks or months it's too late 😔 waiting for your next video 😉
The term "Okay," was not used during this time period. " Very well" or "Yes ma'am" , "Very good," " Very well, " "As you wish" would fit better with the speech of the period.
I probably would not be alive if i lived back then. My sickness of choice was strep throat in my 20's, then I had an infection in my cheek that if I had waited another day to get to the hospital it would have killed me. Then i had to have my gall bladder out and a hernia fixed and then I had what they called a psuedo tumour which was my spinal fluid pressed against my brain stem when I was pregnant with my daughter and neither of us would have been alive. SO I am glad I was born in the 20th centery
with the orange peel, is it the actual outer orange peel that is supposed to be facing out or the white inner lining. She mentioned the "peel side out" I think, but it looks like the white side is showing. Thank you for these entertaining videos.
