Anyone else here surprised to learn that Valentine's day has been a practice for over 1,000 years? The oldest surviving valentine poem was written by a duke to his wife in 1415. The first commercially printed Valentine's Cards appeared in the 18th century in England and were made on a large scale by mechanical machines printing paper with images hearts, birds, cupids and red roses. These cards were even back then known as "valentines." Other traditions by the 18th century included giving flowers, giving sweets (including candy hearts) and small gifts. A man may write his sweetheart's name on a piece of red, heart shaped paper then pin it on his sleeve hence the saying wearing one's heart on one's sleeve. Name drawing ceremonies were also popular and had been for quite some time by the early 19th century. Here is a quote by Bourne, in his Antiquitates Vulgares (1725): "It is a ceremony, never omitted among the Vulgar, to draw Lots which they Term Valentines, on the Eve before Valentine-day. The names of a select number of one sex, are by an equal number of the other put into some vessel; and after that, every one draws a name, which…is called their Valentine, and is also looked upon as a good omen of their being man and wife afterwards."
Maybe a little older than that. However the specific date of when the US started celebrating such popular date remains ambiguous and obscure. Yes it became popular in the late 1800, pretty close to the 19 century. As far as 1820's is too early, I guess to assume that the pioneers were engaged in preparing valentines treats at that stage in American culture. But then again its date that has not been written on rock.
St Valentine was a priest of the early Holy Roman Catholic Church. He was beheaded for breaking the civil law which prohibited Catholic marriages (he is a martyr and the patron saint of lovers). God bless you!
@@southernenigma3427 Fun fact: Laura Ingalls, in her books, often talks about her father butchering a pig. She also has a pork chop recipe in one of her books. :)
Anyone else just loves the sounds of these time period videos? I love the cracking fire, the scraping on the pans, and even footsteps (always loved those kinds of footsteps etc sounds in old movies too, don’t hear them as much in new movies).
How crazy! My great grandmother was born in 1924 so she's turning 100 years old soon. For her it was closer that way of living. She used to make her own cheese, own corn bread and tortillas. Everything came from the land and she had 12 children with not running water or electricity. I really admire the power of women in those times
@meelany-thats hysterical that you described your family, and it’s your great-grandmama. That’s exactly my family, but it was my Mama, and 12 kids! Lol! We lived on a farm, we made our own butter, jams jellies, buttermilk, fresh milk. We had a giant garden, grew all the vegetables and canned them for winter, or froze some, too. We made syrups, pie fillings and berries. We had an orchard for all the fruits. We had turkeys, chickens and pigs, cows and horses. With that many people to feed, if we didn’t do it that way, we would’ve starved! With my parents, all the kids, an occasional uncle or aunt, and whatever friends my sibs had that were homeless at the time, we fed everyone! What a wonderful way to live! Mama would have been 106 this past March! I miss her so much, and I miss that farm every day.
She had little housework. Laundry and food kept her days busy. There was an article written that outlined today's household work and that of settlers. It seems 35 hrs a week was average for both modern and settlers alike. All their clothes would be hand stitched!
I love how simple their love is. Wanting to care for each other and appreciating the care they each receive, working towards common goals even just in cooking together.
@Nurse Bethany women were treated much worse then than they are today. i enjoy the simplicity of older times, but not society for reasons other than women
This is my kind of Valentines Day. No commercialization. Just people doing nice gestures for each other as a show of affection. Nothing says I love you like making an effort to let someone know that they are appreciated. 💘

I call it a hallmark holiday too. I refuse to celebrate it. My husband and I had both been married to cheating, lying "people " who treated us like scrap all year and used Valentine's day as a way to make up for cheating, lying, and abuse. When we met and decided we were going to be together, my one stipulation was that we never celebrate the hallmark holiday, but show each other love throughout the year. 22 years and going strong!!
I found this channel because I was searching “frontier cooking” and I’ve been binging these videos!! I’m just thoroughly impressed!! These videos are really amazing. How did you learn all this?!! It makes me sad that now at 35 I’m trying to research and learn about basic things like cooking on a fire, sewing, preserving, growing food, and all that. Survival is becoming a lost skill. I watch a lot of homesteading channels but I’ve never been more impressed or inspired than after watching your videos. I wish so greatly we could go back to living like this. Our society makes it very difficult. It feels like a trap. Anyhow, I love your content and not only the history it teaches, but the story it tells. I also love that on the other channel you have talks that are about the “real life” aspect of what you’re doing. Just really super neat and I’m a permanent fan now!!!
I absolutely am in love with this channel. The food, the pace of of life and long before the trappings of today's world...what a wonderful time. Keep it going!!! Not sure about anyone else but I find this to be very calming
Those pork steaks and the mushrooms are making my mouth water....and cooked over an open flame. No wonder Ron hardly breaths when he eats. The dinner and the deserts look fabulous.
The food looks delicious. I love the little heart cakes. Justine you sure can cook in the fireplace. Happy Belated Valentine's day. I can't hardly wait to see the bedroom
The cabin looks so cozy and beautiful I love all the cookware back then all the food looks amazing I’m a retired baker I’m going for the apricot tart my favorite and my comment on what Ron made you was a carved heart with your names I was so excited to see what he made you but I would have never guessed a cookie cutter I love it and everything else great video all looks amazing! 💞💞
Being slightly under 5 ft tall I feel her pain about reaching the pot. Eventually you get tired of asking for help and you just climb everything to get what you need, including shelves at the grocery store lol. Also, watching pies being made is so nostalgic for me. I was always in the kitchen with my grandma, helping her cook. She would lay down the base crust, then give me a butter knife to cut off the extra (which either went into the top crust, or was baked later with butter, sugar, and cinnamon on top. Then she showed me how to pinch and crimp nice patterns on the edges. My favorite memories from childhood are the ones I have with her.
Yes. That's going to be their bedroom. They won't have to go through the hassle of moving table and chairs out of the way, and putting down and picking up their straw mattress anymore, once the room is finished, and Ron makes a wooden bed and a linen chest for the bedroom.
I hope Ron is doing something useful! he seems to be in only one scene per video! just saying. maybe he's the cameraman, videographer behind the scenes guy! .
I get hungry watching your shows. I have my grandmother's old handwritten cookbook. She was born in 1900. Her book says things like "take a knob of butter and put in pan over hot fire. Or, Bake in oven with slow fire. Cooking and baking was so literally hands-on. A pinch of this, a handful of that. Press into tins, etc, as you do here. I love watching you cook. It takes me back to my childhood in the 1950s. Things have changed so much and so much faster in the past few decades than they did in the previous ones. Thank you for your wonderful video-reenactments.
I'm so happy to watch this. Everything traditional is so great for body and soul. Thanks Ron n Justine, i love your tiny house. Much more beautiful and elegant than fancy apartment!
@@Ace-ke7fq I can see your point about it, but to help you out why I wouldn't mind this is because of the how the food is cooked and seeing how history grew at that time. Our books and videos may teach us, but experiencing it first hand during that time will help me understand why some things are best off being left behind. I still see your point about the word helpless, it is a true word during that time

There still are people choosing this life in the world. If I were young again I believe I would go way off grid a make a go of it. No stress very hard work but so rewarding and way healthier. Thank you loved it. Happy Valentine’s 💚🌹
I don't think most people celebrated this holiday. Not in my neck of woods anyway. But I did find a handmade valentine in my mother's things from Depression Era. I know however, that it was recognized or you would not be depicting it. Thanks. I ❤️ all your videos.
Valentine's day is an oldddddd holiday. By the 18th century it was very similar to what it is today, couples giving out flowers, sweets, gifts, cards. By the 19th century it was the norm. It's actually over 1,000 years old and originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.
There are multiple sources citing Valentines Day celebrations and poems going back waaayy long ago. Not sure where you are from that would not celebrate a popular holiday.
Valentine's Day is an old feast day. During the Reformation many feast days were either socially prohibited or downright outlawed (IE Christmas Day in England), so possibly this is why it wasn't celebrated much where you're from if you come from a very strict protestant culture (German Lutheran, Calvinism, Baptist). The late Victorians revived many traditions with a definite secular twist (once again Christmas and Valentine's). As Justine and Ron are in French America, it is a Catholic culture where is would have been celebrated.
I could almost smell all the aromas while watching this super calm lady put together a feast with all the aplomb of a short order cook; everything cooked perfectly and ready at the same time. After cooking 60 years, I still haven’t mastered that. And all of it accomplished in such a small space! Amazing!
What a lovely meal, even better when you shared the preparation.. very romantic kids! ( lol I’m old and loving it) I find it so interesting that even though all the meals are very straightforward ( no fancy stuff like we have today ) it’s still looks so tasty and it’s certainly much more complicated than the way we cook today. From keeping a fire going to managing the heavy cast iron without spilling ash everywhere or dropping the lid etc. very very satisfying to watch.
Loving your entertaining videos! The interactions are so cute. The goodies and food look so yummy. You folks eat very well. 😁 The cabin is so homey and adorable. Now onto the eating and conversing...

Happy Valentines Day Justine & Ron! WOW what an awesome meal! Lots of work went into that meal! Thanks for the receipts to! Blessings from Bethlehem, NH.
You guys are absolutely adorable! I love the respect and appreciation that you show for each other. The food looks delish! My husband and I want to have a nice cabin in the woods so we can have a place to decompress and relax early American, pioneer style. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in August. I have 5 years until I retire, He and I will definitely be doing this.
This channel was on my suggested video playlist so while my interest in period videos are nominal at best, I am obsessed with your channel. I binge watched this weekend and managed to watch every video except three. Soooooo good. Plus there’s still all those videos from your other channel. #excited
That historical cabin y'all built is cute. And thank you soooooo much for sharing the cooking, the 18th/19th century off grid life style, and putting so much love and effort in your videos. God bless you both. I mean that from the heart.
What a beautiful couple. My first time watching and I love it! So calming and relaxing. But making me very hungry lol. The cabin is beautiful I would love living in it. The mantle looked beautifully decorated with the red hearts and stone heart she found for him and the flowers he gave her. The heart he carved out for her was beautiful, what a treasure and keepsake. So thoughtful. I love it.
What if, you took your wet red heart that you just painted, and stamped it on white butcher paper to make clever wrapping paper? I bet you already thought of this. And all I am doing is sitting on my couch watching you do stuff and enjoying it thoroughly! Thank you for your great videos. Much love from Carlsbad, California.
Wow! This was an incredible video! Is this set part of a historical village? Where did you find those little tart tins and the hearts pan ( if I am not wrong it appears to be of cast iron) ? The both of you make a perfect couple!
What a feast! I am salivating and I want some! I love your show, and I lived off grid for 20 years. You make it look very easy and you are both awesome. Love is the only way, thankyou and God bless
You got me in trouble for Valentine’s Day. After watching you cook I just knew my wife would love to have a 13-1/2 inch cast iron frying pan. Well, not as much as I thought. I guess I’d better call and cancel the crew coming out to put in a fireplace. Lol. Joking aside, I did get the pan for me, used it last night and it cooked a hamburger stew magnificently. Now off to the store to get some pork steaks and mushrooms. The tarts look fantastic. Unfortunately my kids eat all kinds of fruit but will not eat jams or jellies. God Bless and keep up the good work.
Just saw your thumbnail on the cabbage, sausage potato video and watched. GOLD. DON'T CHANGE THAT FORMAT! You're teaching history, Cooking, lifestyle of the times, the work that goes into the simple but honest life at that time.... it's relaxing to watch the ASMR type video. My opinion, keep it quiet and continue to show the work as it's perfect. This is unique as far as I know. Show the grunt and backbone that went into living at that time. It's like relaxing to a historical cooking show and keeps very important traditions alive and well. EXCELLENT! I only subbed to like 2 channels ever. This channel is special and important to our country and culture. May come in handy someday, who knows....
You know, I reaIIy have to admire how you've been abIe to master the art of cooking over a fire Iike that. I mean, I used to be quite good at manipuIating my way around a camping stove and even keep a marshmaIIow on the stick Iong enough for it to turn bIack, but I don't think I'd be haIf as adept as you (guys) are with this hearth cooking. Bravo.💞

I don't know whether they're common in the USA but here in the UK we have 6 packs of jam and curd tarts just like that and its so easy to eat the lot on the drive home from the shop! 🤭
Lovely video! It brings you back into your body like a good meditation to watch you prepare and cook your food! Thank you for capturing and sharing the essence of everyday living in our early American history!

When we met and decided we were going to be together, my one stipulation was that we never celebrate the hallmark holiday, but show each other love throughout the year. 22 years and going strong!!
@@janetsides1796 i wish yall the utmost best ☺
I love the sounds of you pottering around your kitchen ☺️❤️
I concur they are very impressive and patient and their attention to detail is exceptional. It is not only impressive but it's historical.
@@staroceans8677 yes! It’s wonderful!
I absolutely am in love with this channel. The food, the pace of of life and long before the trappings of today's world...what a wonderful time.
Keep it going!!! Not sure about anyone else but I find this to be very calming
Your teamwork resulted in a lovely meal. I was saying "Awwww!" when Ron surprised you with flowers and a card. So glad for you two! 💕
it's good Ron is doing something useful! hope he cleans the pits and pans out in the snow!
Those pork steaks and the mushrooms are making my mouth water....and cooked over an open flame. No wonder Ron hardly breaths when he eats. The dinner and the deserts look fabulous.
I absolutely loved hearing the crackling fire. I’m addicted to this channel.🙂🙂🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️
The food looks delicious. I love the little heart cakes. Justine you sure can cook in the fireplace. Happy Belated Valentine's day. I can't hardly wait to see the bedroom
I have to say that too. You really mastered cooking on an open fire. Must take a lot of practice, patience and trial and error. Love your videos
I love how happy the two of you look when you're together. As the saying goes, the two of you are a "match made in Heaven."
BYBAMNFU ON1
This is so wonderful to see a loving couple cooking together on the most loved day of the year.
You both rock!!! Love you, all!
I stumbled upon this... this is fascinating ....my birthday is Valentine's Day so this means a lot I'm glad I discovered you
Ron coming out of their NEW ROOM!!! I squealed seeing that! Hooray! ( The food looks delicious too!)
Food looks delicious 😋 enjoyable video. Thank you .
It's such a pleasure watching you guys reenact that time frame 😀 Simply magnificent!
Wow! You really out did yourself! Everything looks delicious. You two are too cute! 🥰
I know!! Are they a real married couple??!
@ they are now! 😊
@@tlrice72 omg this makes me so happy!! So when they started the channel they were not a couple???
That leftover pie dough with the butter, sugar, and cinnamon on top? My Grandma used to call them "dog ears." I miss her...
Looks delicious. I think Ron is building a new room on. Happy Valentine’s Day.😋❤️🇨🇦
Everything looks so good, you are an exceptional cook!
Thanks for another delightful episode. I'm off now to see you eating your delicious dinner. Sending you guys love from Mid Wales UK 💜💜💜
I'm so happy to watch this. Everything traditional is so great for body and soul. Thanks Ron n Justine, i love your tiny house. Much more beautiful and elegant than fancy apartment!
Love that it’s so real and not commercial like modern times. How fun and all that delicious food too
Really appreciate all the antiques that are being used! Awesome 👍
Looks like a feast.
This is the kind of housewife I wanted to be, but some men don't appreciate it.
Just call me old fashion.
what? helpless! help? I can't --------
I am on board with you by being this kind of housewife.
@@Ace-ke7fq I can see your point about it, but to help you out why I wouldn't mind this is because of the how the food is cooked and seeing how history grew at that time. Our books and videos may teach us, but experiencing it first hand during that time will help me understand why some things are best off being left behind. I still see your point about the word helpless, it is a true word during that time
It takes two.
@@howisitgoin4267 Yes it does.
The camera work is incredible your both doing such a great job and you love each other so much lm so happy you found each other you were raised by amazing people and l can’t wait to see your future unfold your going to make spectacular parents this is a true love story thank you for sharing this incredible journey hugs and prayers xox

Wow! That's a sumptuous spread! Surprised to know that they celebrated valentine's day in those days as well!
Oh my goodness!! The cabin bedroom looks like it is almost finished and it's a nice size too! Can't wait to see it!!
Love your Valentine’s Day decor and the great food, too.
That meal looked so good ! Your place is so cute especially when you decorate it for special occasions . Happy Valentines Day !
You do more than open a window to the past: as marvellous as that is! You open the door of our hearts to something Eternal. To trust and care and tenderness. So exquisitely produced and photographed. So much beauty. Thanks for this!
Yippie! A new video. Look forward to every new one.
Happy Vintage Valentines Day so lovely to watch!!

Everything looked so good. And you guys are so sweet together ❤️
They are so courteous and polite to each other :)
I think this is my all time favorite channel. It has a soothing effect for the soul!
I love all your videos! You only learn so much in history through elementary, middle and high school but seeing how people lived back in Early America is awesome!
Would love to see you and Ron sit down to dinner after all that cooking and watch you enjoying that good food!
You 2 are the cutest for real, I just love watching how you cook Justine and Ron is always so eager to help the love between you guy’s is so genuine. Everything looked so delicious, and the deserts beautiful job I give you so much credit Justine . You put so much care and love in to it , I know that you both had an awesome Valentine’s Day bless you both.
( lol I’m old and loving it)
I find it so interesting that even though all the meals are very straightforward ( no fancy stuff like we have today ) it’s still looks so tasty and it’s certainly much more complicated than the way we cook today. From keeping a fire going to managing the heavy cast iron without spilling ash everywhere or dropping the lid etc. very very satisfying to watch.
Justine you are so sweet ,, you tell Ron thank you for everything.
Loving your entertaining videos! The interactions are so cute. The goodies and food look so yummy. You folks eat very well. 😁 The cabin is so homey and adorable. Now onto the eating and conversing...
so beautiful video , so emotional ,my eyes was very shinny ..i love the way they was sending gifts to each other ..

Wow, this was so so amazing. What a delicious meal, I'm sure Ron loved it all, Justine.
You two are great together!
saw your video popped in my feed just now, i'm grateful I clicked. Not only do I love vintage or old-themed videos, I also love cooking and anything romantic. This.Is.Perfect.
My heart jumped when you kissed eachother, the passion is real..
💞
Happy Valentines Day Justine & Ron! WOW what an awesome meal! Lots of work went into that meal! Thanks for the receipts to! Blessings from Bethlehem, NH.
You guys are absolutely adorable! I love the respect and appreciation that you show for each other. The food looks delish! My husband and I want to have a nice cabin in the woods so we can have a place to decompress and relax early American, pioneer style. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in August. I have 5 years until I retire, He and I will definitely be doing this.
Wow! What a stupendous meal! It looks so delicious 😋
I love this ways of simple life. There was no boring part.. Everything is remarkable and sweet..
The little tarts ,Justine created looked lovely ❤ I am sure the heart cakes were delicious. I enjoyed watching this beautiful meal come together. 🥧🥩🥔🥭
Happy Valentine’s Day Ron and Justine. Thank you for a great video for Valentine’s Day
This channel was on my suggested video playlist so while my interest in period videos are nominal at best, I am obsessed with your channel.
Love your show. Highly addictive
That's a great idea Linda.
wow, a handmade gift is the way to my heart to. Very sweet, Your a very lucky lady Justine, Ron's a keeper !
You two are adorable. Thanks for sharing. I would love to try that food.
Congratulations super nice. Iam #1 fan from Mexico.
God Bless and keep up the good work.
amen Ralph! great couple!
Bravo.💞
It will be pleasurable to watch u both sat down and enjoy the food together after preparing
Wow, that looks scrumptious. I can see living in the 1800's possibly once a month
Simply AMAZING! Your channel is the best thing out there! You, Justine, are one amazing cook!
Is there a recipe book you have put together Justine? Everything is always so yummie looking 🥰💞💫
Oooh what a wonderful idea! Quite the fundraiser that could be! I'd buy it
I just LOVE your channel! I’m an old soul born in the wrong era!! Thank you for the videos and original recipes…I have been saving them to try out this summer !!
Aww such a sweet Valentine’s Day dinner with the cutest couple.
