I really enjoy the story arcs. Justine budding romance with Ron, Lucy and the Colonel arguing over money, the kleptomaniac aunt, Lucy's fondness for sherry. It's all so believable and they all have definite personalities. I love Lucy's spirit.
I discovered this channel through Townsend Live yesterday and boy I am glad. I was looking for a victorian 18 century youtube channel but could not find anything through my search aside from Townsend . Your channel and videos are so fresh and entertaining and feed the curiosity of an old soul like mine who is stuck in the 18 century for some reason. Please keep on posting I love your content !!!
If you like this time period and you can ever visit, Greenfield Village in Michigan is a whole living history ‘village’ of historic homes and buildings connected to historic figures (like the Wright brothers childhood home)-complete with a small mainstreet area with shops, a working farm, ‘parlor house lane’ with stately homes (they have Noah Webster’s house!), a covered bridge, and schoolhouse! Buildings vary from late 18th century to early 20th century. Definitely worth a trip.
There's quite a few 18th and 19th century channels loosely based around historical costuming and topics like Jane Austen. None in this format though. This channel seems unique in it's dramatic approach to history. If you have any specific interests in history try searching UA-cam for those. One channel I look forward to every week is Ellie Dashwood. She discusses the historical and cultural contexts of the plots of various pieces of historical literature. It's changed the way I interpret classical literature from that period.
Oh dear! Is this the Panic of 1819? Lots of folks suffered. Some historians call it the first American Depression. The government was deep in debt from the War of 1812 and this had knock on effects of destabilising the economy and currency. I do hope the Stevenson family get through this!
I know some people don't like the background music, but I find it charming. It's like someone is off in another room or a house nearby playing the piano. I grew up in a very musical house and I have an appreciation for all kinds of music.
Oh, Justine. So you're not interested in Ron because he's "too tall" and his eyes are "too blue." LOL. And Ben's failed attempts to be thrifty just crack me up. I also love how inquisitive Lucy is. No one can escape Lucy's Inquisition!
I'm equally amazed Mr. and Ms Stephenson quarrel in front of a servant and that Justine is not making any effort to spirit away herself during this argument.
A servant, even one that was a poor family member, would have left the room - though maybe listened outside of the door. And no lady would be airing her dirty laundry in front of a friend. Yikes!
Colonel Stephenson somehow thought that repeatedly insulting his wife instead of being upfront was going to make her less mad at him when she found out the truth behind his penny pinching? *headdesk* Change course, change course, Colonel, while there is still time, for there is a storm brewing upon the horizon and her name is Lucy Stephenson!
I've been watching the story out of sequence. I watched the three-parter about Justine and Ron and the other suitor earlier. It's no wonder Justine opted for love instead of money and status as a reason for getting married! I could almost see Justine wince as she witnessed Ben and Lucy arguing and insulting each other.
Colonel, A little military advice from one officer to another with regards to your bride. Withdrawing is a sensible method to preserve your resources. Don’t look at it as a “retreat,” rather, perceive it as a “tactical advance towards the rear.” Respectfully, B. Drabek, 1LT (ret.) 5th VA Vols. (1861-1865).
This is exactly why my husband and I have separate accounts for anything not household related. There’s no way he can complain about my Sephora binge. Thank goodness it’s 2021. And Ben? NEVER tell your wife her perfume smells like a chamber pot. That’s where you’re going to end up.
My husband and I have a joint checking account and separate savings accounts, plus I have a separate checking account that I kept after I opened it for my father's estate matters and then added our son to the account, so he could learn to use a checking account and debit card.

The plot thickens! Janine's getting a rep in the neighborhood and pretending she doesn't like the woodcutter, and Ben almost gets strangled by Lucy's borrowed pearl necklace!
I understand why poor old Ben is so upset... $40,000 in 1820 is worth $928,875.21 in 2021! Not for nothing, l’d be pretty upset too! P.S. When is Part II suppose to be posted? I’m on pins and needles! 😱😱😱

Last night in my dream, Lucy was the headmistress of a finishing school I was attending. LOL, Maybe she can take up teaching young ladies proper etiquette, etc. LOL.
I feel like people wouldn't've spoken so freely with their servants, in front of their servants, and especially with neighbors of a similar social class
Soooooo, he's managing her money, but now they're $40,000 in debt. Sounds like he's not managing the money very well at all. This is why communication is so important.
I had my own bank account even after marriage. My husband complained about it at one time but I said that I wanted to buy him birthday and Christmas presents with my money, not (his) ours. I don't think he ever believed that to be the real reason though. I came into my marriage with a lot of money and he barely had a chamber pot of his own (pot to pee in). Fortunately, he agreed that I would manage all the money matters and we did really well. When I divorced him, he got 'our' bank account that I built up through thrifty means (baking bread, cooking good meals, sewing my own clothes...) and fortunately, I kept my account. I would have lost a lot if we combined our money and split it in half at the divorce.
Justine's reactions in the BG and mirror were so funny! Also, when you stand Justine next to anyone else she looks like she's 14 years old my goodness!
Poor Lucy is shocked, terrified, and in disbelief. That is a sudden and extreme loss! With banks of the time not being well regulated at a federal level, and a huge proliferation of them due to economic boom periods, instability was frequent. Hopefully the Stephensons can recover - before the Depression of 1819!
Justine is looking schnazy…🌟but Ben’s shoes look like if he rubbed them a 🧞♂️ Genie would pop out ..😁 Lucy is having a conniption fit at her husband and rightfully so …

$40,000 in 1820 is worth around $900,000 in today's money o_o
A princely sum indeed!

Lucy is really a good actress. Ben is too. He is so calm.
Watching this gives me vibes of Little House on the Prairie, and the Oleson's. Lucy and Harriet, both gold diggers.
"It smells like the draining from the chamber pot" that had me in stitches.

I'm equally amazed Mr. and Ms Stephenson quarrel in front of a servant and that Justine is not making any effort to spirit away herself during this argument.
Justine is a 'non-entity' ...she is simply a lady's maid...she is invisible.
That’s how the servants in those days knew about everything going on.
I wonder if the family really would as argue around the servants during this time period?
@@scook5599 yes, i think they did.

Wow, 1820 marriage looks a lot like 2021 marriage. 😆
Nothing new under the sun ☀️
Some things stay the same 201 years later
Right? 😂
From the beginning of time the first argument was between a husband and wife.
The only difference is the sodomy. They didn't practice that gross and vile behavior in 1820.
Good to see something’s never change, bickering between couples. No matter what century we love gossip.
When her friend just sat down and said " I'm never getting married" while sipping tea 😆
She suddenly realized that.....HER EYES HAVE BEEN OPENED👀 , and now she clearly SAW THE LIGHT💡 .....JUST IN TIME! LOL
