Met them in ‘85 outside a Woolworths in Kansas….Exene signed my shirt I was wearing, and Texacala Jones was giggling behind her….thanks X for making 45 years of my life so much better!
@@coffeecalmdown Wait until you learn Exene is a Sandy Hook school shooting denier, Pro -Trump supporter. John Doe wouldn't even comment on her in interviews the last 5 years. Maybe's she's back on some meds or John needs the money from some re-release.
Just like Exene talks about being in awe of Lucinda, I remember playing pinball next to Exene at First Ave. in Minneapolis many years ago and I was in awe. Speechless, she has such a presence I was afraid to talk to her…
I have been fortunate to get know Exene and she's the real deal. Unassuming and down to Earth. She's completely approachable. If you get the chance again...just say howdy. She'll be happy to chat with you. Best of luck keeping up with her when she does! ;)
I saw Exene about 24 years ago in line at convenience store. I didn’t talk to her, largely because I was surprised to see her in line at a convenience store.
OMG finally my favorite band on What's In My Bag! And what a fantastic selection-- thank you for some music education, X! And thank you Amoeba for having X!
Full disclosure: Sometimes I scroll down and see what the guests pick without watching the video. But for this one, I watched the entire episode. And it did not disappoint. Fantastic picks from these legends ❤X❤
One of my favorite music stories: My buddy Steve owned a club in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis in the late 1970s-early 1980s. All the emerging punk and new wave bands played there, including X. Their 1980 gig at the venue fell on the last Saturday of May, the day before the Indianapolis 500. There was not a hotel room available for 25 miles in any direction. John, Exene, DJ, and Billy had no idea that was the case and did not book rooms in advance. They called Steve frantically at 3 AM Saturday morning, and he invited them to stay at his apartment. Exene got the couch, the guys slept on the floor--and they still just destroyed onstage that night.
Thanks for sharing. I just saw them July 2024 at the same club in Indianapolis & met the full band before the show. Very cool people. X the band is a national treasure.
Thank you Exene and John for a soundtrack to go along with my befuddled life ...finally found my resting place out here in Joshua Tree ...Thank you for coming to town the last two years to Pappy and Harriets ...Hope to see you again soon
I missed X locally a few weeks ago so I really hope they extend the tour and do more dates. I have never gotten to see them live and would really love to catch them before they call it quits. Anyone not familiar with the band should really check them out. They are absolutely fantastic. Often considered a punk band, I think they are so much more than that. They blend so many styles to form their own style. Punk, rockabilly, outlaw country, blues, rock and more...you get it all with X. They are amazing and will be missed when they stop.
Saw John do an acoustic set opening for Lucinda Williams years ago at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco. She mentioned between songs how honored she was to share the same stage with him. They were both great.
Under the Big Black Sun..whenever I hear those songs..heck..just hold that album in my hands ..it’s 1982 again..my friends and family all around me..truly blessed and grateful.
So happy to see the two of you together. YOU LOOK GREAT!! if I saw you at Amoeba I'd try so hard to act cool, but i just know I'd blow it and go all "Chris Farley Paul McCartney" on you guys🤣😂. Loved this! Say hello to DJ and Billy. 🤣🤣😎😎👏👏🍻🍻👍👍😎😎 loved the old footage of you two in John's apartment. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE film your next tour. It's time for your documentary. Those of us who've loved you from the beginning can only watch "Decline" so many times... Man, i remember when John was getting that little tattoo. Back then it was all SO HARD CORE to watch that!!!!! 🤣🤣
Great episode. I've seen X and/or John Doe live a crazy amount of times, and I've never heard him hit a bad note...ever. He's one of my all-time favorites. Leave it to him to grab an Elliott Smith album. Peace.
Met them John and Exene, both, at a talk and signing for John's book at the Los Angeles Public library in, I think, 2016. They were every bit as nice and approachable as I hoped they'd be. A dream come true since I first saw them at the Whisky in 1980. To me they are like family.
Then Exene has changed I knew her on the LA scene, then she was not a nice person, I will just leave it at that. But being near 70 has probably mellowed her out.
Strange coincidence cause like yesterday I heard the song Car Wheels.. on the FM radio driving my truck, haven't heard that in years. It's a tremendous song & sounded awesome loud through the speakers here in baking hot SoCal
What a coincidence! Just yesterday I started listening to their 2020 album Alphabetland (I'd previously only been familiar with their first 4 albums, which are some of my all-time favorites). I like Alphabetland a lot! I look forward to their new release.
A giant “thank you” to X for all the great music over the years!👍🏻 The new album is great but I’m sorry to hear that it is apparently going to be the last one.☹️Hope to see you if you come through Arizona!
After listening to X since middle school (I'm in my 50s now) I was finally able to meet John at Rough Trade NYC when he was promoting his book. He played a few songs, mostly by audience request, then sat down to sign some books. When it was my turn, he asked me to whom I wanted him to make it out, I was barely able to spit out the initials I use, "JD". He chuckled and said, "Cool, so from JD to JD." The weird sorta laugh sorta yes sorta I don't know what sound I made still haunts me to this day. He just smiled.
@@MothGirl007 Redd Kross were great live. In fact their albums really didn’t reflect how good they were live. However, I wouldn’t say they were better than X.
When I was a kid 50 years ago vinyl was kinda like baseball cards for us kids that weren't into sports ...it was a way to show your inner self to friends or potential friends and see what they thought ...with out being too weird ... Swapped LOS ANGELES and WILD GIFT with many friends in high school ...I was such a huge fan . junior year I had an X shaved in the back of my head ...LOL
I was lucky enough to get to see you guys play countless times, mostly at the Whiskey. New Year's Eve opening for Devo down in Long Beach was excellent. Now that radio is dead, I can appreciate the stadium bands of the 70's. But when you guys came out with so many great songs back then, X stood head and shoulders above everyone else as far as freshness and creativity. . . .
Was late coming to X but so glad I did. Amazing first few records. Have to check out the new one. Hey maybe I will get lucky and get to see you guys on tour!
Sunny War! So cool! When visiting a friend in Santa Monica years ago there was this woman busking at the beach who was just fantastic. She was selling a self produced CD and we bought one thinking “damn she’s good. I hope she makes something of this.” Good to see she has.
Was curious to see what these two picked out as I figured they'd have everything (they'd want) already. What a great band. When Ebay was pretty new, someone from Slash was auctioning off a lot of production art from their albums/cds. The label was probably just dumping that type of thing and someone there took it all. I won some photos from that LA/Wild Gift CD and, I think, the inner sleeve artwork from the Knitters album. Back when Ebay was really cool.

I love X, but it's hard being a European fan because they rarely ever play outside the US. I think the last time they played over here was at a Belgian festival in the late '90s.😢
My goodness, I love these guys if only for how they represent a part of the culture that no longer exists. I would check them out knowing that they along with their fans would be such an interesting lot to hang with. Super cool folks...plus Exene's connection to Viggo Mortensen is cool too. The stories these two have...
Never hit that 'like' button so fast. X are the greatest to ever do it.

Lucinda is so special. Her voice reaches your soul.
Can't remember when I enjoyed a What's In My Bag this much in a long, long time, Thanks, X!
