glad to see the car smg is still in your shop, looking forward to seeing a video for the rest of it t be put together and painted/finished. Maybe in the future, data knife, smart pistol and or flatline
Hiya Jesse. I found a product you might be interested in for this very purpose. An art supply called Moulding Paste. I used it for a wall mural project with 3d chameleons. The stuff is hard one tried, no strong smells, sandable and sculptable once dried.
This stuff is great for small/light gaps or filling in the layer lines. It doesn't necessary bond parts though. A couple of things that work really well for me. 1.) I've found it sticks much better to a primer coat. if you apply it directly to a fresh or un-coated print, it has a tenancy to pop off here and there. 2.) This stuff is water soluble. you can scoop out a bit of it into another container and thin it to your liking (a little water goes a long way). You can then use a brush to apply it faster over larger areas some what evenly. Applying it right out of its bin with your finger works, but sometimes feels clunky.
Thank you for this video, I'm building a Mandalorian armor kit and I bought a 3D print helmet and looking forward working on it when it comes and this video was a HUGE help!!
That wood fill stuff is great. I've seen it used as a glue substitute on a woodworking project where it held together better than the nails. When it hardens, it's probably tougher than the plastic.
It's amazing to see just how far you've come in terms of production and subscriber count. You're excited in this video to hit 20k, and at the time I'm making this comment you're at 464k. Congrats on the success!
What a coincidence! I am currently printing this Doctor Doom mask, and looking at how to fill seams. I was super surprised to see that you were demonstrating on the model that I was printing in this video! Thank you so much for these tips, going to pick up some woodfiller tomorrow!
@@UncleJessy Blazingly fast reply! I'm glad someone who is so helpful gets the views they deserve. I have some blasters for my mando cosplay with some gaps. Your woodfiller sounds like the perfect "cure" for that project....
I've been subbed to you since maybe 2018-2019 and recently got more into 3d printing and as about to buy the bondo auto but I live in an apartment so the fact that you rave about the wood filler made me hardcore change my thought process to finish my witcher swords. THANK YOU
Thanks for checking out the videos!! Yeah I havent touched Bondo in ages. I do like to use the Bondo spot putty for minor defects but I pretty much just stick with woodfiller still to this day. No harsh fumes is the biggest factor. Happy making!
Thanks so much for this video. I am in the process of printing my first helmet (Clone Trooper) after getting my first printer a couple of months ago and this info is super helpful!! Liked and subbed
Clayton! This is awesome, I have a project that I purchased Bondo for and had no idea how toxic that stuff can be. I am going to find that Elmer's Wood Filler ASAP! Looks very nice and easy to use. Thanks for sharing your professional tips on filling gaps and seams, sir. Very well done.
Yeah Bondo is a toxic crap. Honestly people are only using it in finishing their 3d prints as the leftover from Pepakura days. All you really need is just resin.
So I never use the bond or the wood fillers before and I was at Home Depot trying to figure out what to get and I couldn't remember. So I flipped up your video here. Watching a video you start talking about the Bondo so I grabbed the Bondo in the harder they like but I don't use that anymore LOL so then you go with the bond One Touch whatever it was I go to grab that and you like but my favorite thing LOL. I guess I should just skip to the end to see what was the best. I just found it amusing as I was at Home Depot with one of the employees looking for all the stuff and we are having to go back and forth back and forth to the final one LOL great video thank you for the advice. I couldn't find the Elmer's wood filler but I got dap wood filler and it appears to be the same product.
I prefer to use a 3d printer pen for seam lines. It lightly melts the two pieces lightly together, and adds plastic to the seam line. Then sand it, once it cools. It does take a little practice, so you wont gouge the two pieces.
@UncleJessy Thanks for the info, I feel like I have tried a lot but nothing in comparison to you. Decided to go with the ProBond Woodfiller and used your affiliate link. Thanks again!
What grade sandpaper do you recommend what grit the link you provided is not working I’m just wondering because I printed a terminator head Arnold Schwarzenegger and the nose and the chin area came out a little messed up and I wanna fill it with a wood filler and then paint the whole model first sand it, I was going to just throw it away but it’s been printing for 12 hours I don’t want to waste the filament
Can you wet sand this wood filler!? I've been trying to use a pretty cheap wood filler to fill in a few little gaps of a print that I need to cast, once it dried as soon as I got water on it to sand it it completely melted away. Is this just a problem with all wood filler or was it because I got a crap one?
Hey Jessy. using this wood filler. do I have to worry about long term issues? i want to use it to create a smooth surface on my prints. however I dont have any bond lines. it is one solid object. just some minor gaps, stritiation and the print lines.
I am trying to make a tesserak. I want to create a void with a little pop top box with the lid on the outside to open up for a little light. Can I use DapKwik seal to temporarily cover the edge of the opening on the pop top box so that is won’t adhere to the resin? Does that make sense?
I have had nothing but issues with the wood filler. I have to apply a lot just to fill the seam, and then when I prime over it the color is off so you can still see the seam!
@unclejessy Great review of the different types of fillers. I tried the DAP Plastic Wood from HD, but found that it dried up to quick (as I was applying it). How is the consistency with the ProBond wood filler as you are using it? I noticed that it has alot of moisture with the one you were using. Thank in advance!!
What materials did you print with, is that just regular old PLA that you're applying the wood filler to? -- And will any wood fillers work, or is that one special?
Subbed but was hoping you’d finish the Titanfall weapon with the wood filler, it would have really illustrated how well it works. The mask was black so the gaps weren’t visible from the start.
Do you wash the print after sanding the wood filler down? I've seen people do that but when i start to wash the dust off, you start to just see all the wood filler fibers and start to expose my holes again. Would appreciate any helpful advice!
Is this for and or pla ? Question ? I have seam lines on a PLA star lord mask. I heard etc3d or something like that was good. But what's best to cover seams
Rick Legendary Keep in mind I'm new to this, but From what I've read, XTC-3D, that's what it's called, is used for covering the print lines, and smoothing those, and the stuff he is talking is for the bigger stuff, and I believe it can be used on pretty much all stuff, but don't quote me on that. Although if you are using ABS, I believe you can use Acetone to join seams, and hide print lines
In the beginning of the video you should a realllly smoothe looking gun, I was wondering if you have a video or tutorial for how to make it really slick and shiny like that? Thanks in advance!
any recommendations for glueing pla parts together? I was going to use either krazy glue or contact cement but Im not sure what to use I really don’t want it to fall apart!
Must have missed the older version of wood filler which I swear was mixed with airplane glue. Also wondering about using UV curing resin sold by Amazon for final finish before painting.
I have used a epoxy resin... its can be a pain..will take a couple of trys to get it just right...must be mixed correctly...i ruined some prints where it never dried after weeks...
I've been using spray putty to fill in all the printing lines on my rogue one tank trooper and death trooper helmet. it doesn't get rid of any details or sharp edges on the print. have you ever used it and if so how do you like it?
Used Bondo once on my DREDD helmet and not going to use that toxic crap ever again. Currently working working on a Pofessor Pyg mask with cheap polyester resin and the effects are miles better. As for filling gaps there is already a boatload of dedicated epoxy putties for waraming miniatures like "Green Stuff" and even more for scale model kits.
Thanks again and here is a link to the ProBond Woodfiller that I'm currently obsessed with for my props amzn.to/2oxZI54 amazing stuff!
How much do you spend on filament for the average mask?

Rondo works well also. Mixing bondo and fiberglass resin make it so that you paint it on and when you sand there is less dust ;)
Loving the breaking bad apron!
Super helpful. I’ve made the switch from bondo!
How large a gap can you fill with the wood filler? I was hoping you were going to fill the gaps in the weapon as they were pretty big. Thanks.
