Glad you finally figured out that color of hair jig for dirty water. We have used black & purple hair jigs in Western Lake Erie for many years during the walleye spawn. There are some days when less hair is better. High-pressure weather is one of them. Other good colors are John Deere green & on really sunny days, I like Black & Yellow, which I call the bumble bee. The water is always dirty in the spring here so we use dark jigs on cloudy days and obnoxiously bright-colored jigs on bright days. Believe it or not, pinks & chartreuse really get their attention when the water warms up. I've learned so much in just a few days of watching your tying videos. You know what you're doing. Thank you!
Thank you very much!!! Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass I would stay away from hair jigs if the water was really dirty. I know the darker colors are good in stained water but I wasn't sure if it would work with hair. Turns out black/purple works and it actually works better than plain black for some reason.
I'm glad you showed me this I can actually look at it from time to time now here in Decatur Illinois as we have nasty water and very dark so this will help me to accommodate some people here in Decatur when I start making them I still have to get a few things and find a few things before I start our local fishing store has some of the things I need but not bulk so I will probably have to order some stuff especially the Bucktail and stuff like that I may go up to Peoria and see if I can get some that are on sale I say good luck with that but I'll try thank you
Hey SJ, crushed 'em today with this pattern. Not big numbers but four pigs including one that tied and one that beat my personal best!! Thanks for all the great tips!
Great vid. This particular one is like many that I am making for the Everglades and Florida Bay, where I do my fishing, only in different colors. Thanks for the vids. I'm learning much, particularly from you!
+TheRiz52 Thank you so much for the comment, I'm happy these have helped in some way. If you want to see something I haven't done or a specific technique just let me know, if I can do it I will, thanks for watching.
New subscriber here and a super interested fan. You're the only tuber I follow for custom jigs/baits etc.. I'd love to start doing this myself as I'm a diy/hands on kind of guy. I know nothing of these tools and materials, could you give me a start in the right direction? Possibly a video or some links to purchase materials? Thank you for the top notch videos, you've earned a permanent subscriber 👍🏻.
+Randy Frix Thank you for the kind words, I'm extremely happy that you like the videos!!!! I can give you a list but I think a video showing you would be better. Look for it this weekend sometime and thanks again for watching!!
great video Smalljaw. I was wondering if you ever use bucktail from a deer you harvested yourself. I've been given a few tails and wondered if there's any kind of treatment I need to do to the hair to keep it from rotting or getting old. Thanx.
+Jeff Bruyere Thanks for the kind words!! I don't hunt but I have friends that do give me tails and I'm hoping to get a few today. What you need to do split the tail to remove the bone, scrape all the fat and meat off and then wash with mild dish detergent in warm water. Rinse and pat dry then tack it down and cover with Borax, this will dry out the hide and deodorize it and let it cure so it doesn't rot.
Yeah that's what I've been doing. What about rabbit furs? Have you ever tried making your own zonkers? Lots of people in my area snare rabbits and was thinking of giving it a try. Thanx again.
+Jeff Bruyere I never did a rabbit pelt but I know people who do, buck tails take enough time, I really don't know if I would want to go through the time and effort to make my own zonker strips.
I use Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails #800 clear. If I'm tying silicone of rubber I'll use Loctite super glue brush on because the clear nail polish if fine on hair but will dry white if you get some on silicone and rubber.
What about dying bucktail yourself. have you tried that? if so how do you do it and what do you use? sorry for all the questions but I literally have nobody else I can chat with about this stuff. if your on fb feel free to send me friend request. Thanx.
+Jeff Bruyere Hey Jeff, I don't use FB sorry. I have dyed bucktail and it is easy, go to Walmart or other grocery store and buy some Rit fabric dye, then add to water and boil the bucktail in it, you simply follow the instructions on the back but you're doing bucktail instead of fabric. Some will then set it in vinegar but I don't, the dye holds, just rinse it after a few days after dying.
