Really nice work, mate. And to all the people that say you can't dry brush space marines, I say "Lol" you're just doing it wrong. I think a lot of painters are stuck just thinking there is only 1 style of dry brushing, and haven't evolved with the times. Dry brushing is not only for highly detailed areas now, and doesn't have to be "chalky" You guys have done wonders for the painting world.
Another great video. The tip on rolling alone was worth the price of admission. Thanks for broadening this aspect of the hobby as I feel especially for beginners its an approachable path with great results. Thanks for sharing, please stay safe!
Another great video!! As a Salamander player after watching this one, jumped on your website and finally made a solid purchase of your Series D brushes and a texture pad :) Can’t wait to get them
This guy looks brilliant! I really liked how the green armour looked with a gloss finish, although I do normally finish my models of with GW Munitorum Varnish so mine aren't normally that shiny. Think you're right though, by the time this guy is contrasted with some flames it would look absolutely amazing across a whole army.
Oh, man, I think those are the best Salamanders that I have ever seen! I don't think I could do all of that, but I'm going to watch it again more carefully.
Jeez Guys, that’s an early release especially on the weekend! Time to blitz through my backlog of inceptors now! Brilliant video, love how you advise on thinking of lighting source etc... always inspirational, hope you all have a great bank holiday!

Looks really good mate, nice one! How about a video on painting worn leather for a coat or something, only asking because that's how I'm going to paint up my Skitarii along with an olive drab colour for the armour, I have found a few different techniques, but would be interested to see how you would handle it!
I need to learn this, smaller things I'm pretty good at, but an entire leather cloak could be really interesting... Any excuse to get my favourite GW Warm browns out though... :D

Great video, I'm looking forward to seeing some Knights get painted. Maybe a mostly metallic one and a colourful red or yellow one would be awesome and help a lot of us to tackle those giant hunks of grey plastic that we've lovingly built (8 in my case) and not yet painted a single one (shame on me). :]
Very well done as always. Another tutorial suggestion from me would be fur. Especially on how to achieve different colors like white, brown, yellowish-ocher, black and so on. Bonus points for different markings, patterns and gradients on the fur. ;) I think fur is perfect for drybrushing but when I do it I always have the feeling something is missing to make it look really natural.
Loving this as usual! As per a comment below, maybe something like an animal and/or leather would be good to show off non-vehicle weathering, and catching light on a heavily varied surface? Would love to see your take on a wolf, rat ogre or similar for a take a bit like your awesome fire video.
Suggestion for a future tutorial - a Eldar Phantom Titan (or smaller WraithKnights) Eldar Carapaces would give an excellent opportunity for dry brushing buffing etc. I just hope that Artis Opus are covering your miniature expenses or this could get expensive quickly
You should see the pile of models! I'm currently testing out an assembler to help with the time of building, that's the main issue! AO is purchasing the figures, although TBH about 50% of them came from my cupboard of shame :D

Looks amazing! A couple of questions if that's ok: 1. I notice you don't use gloves - does stipling not show up finger grease as you might see on an airbrush? 2. You used an S or M series brush for the aquila highlight - does the drybrush still work for this for highlighting the gold and slighter silver? I hope you keep up the videos, they're honestly really great!
Hi Julian, thanks so much, dude! 1.) I always wash before starting, I *loath* anything getting between me and my minis, it feels really inorganic and, without sounding to new age screws with my zen, I want to feel the mini, I also need a good grip, and I don't like getting sweaty in the gloves, plus I can't test on my hand :D. Stippling ends up pretty dry quite fast, so it's not as much of an issue as with other techniques (unless using fluros, which dry slower - hence hairdryer :)). 2.) It absolutely does, either would be fine here!
Evening. As mentioned by others, a Fleshtone study is one that I would really love to see you do, but before then... Halved, Quartered or a Camo pattern please. I would really love to see how you would approach them... I may have asked you about this before ;-)
Quick question regarding that base coat stippling technique (tried it last night and didn't seem to work that great) are you thinning your paint and is the technique still a 'dry' technique? Also I seem to be getting lots of streaking when trying to drybrush and edge highlight. Sorry for all the questions, loving the brushes btw :) Would love to see your take on the white armour of stormtroopers/clone troopers/arc troopers :)
Hey dude, sounds like your brush is too wet. It should never feel damp to the touch from a dampening pad... instead it should just feel ''not dry'' Good luck! Practice makes perfect ^_^
@@ArtisOpus cheers for the reply man! Much appreciated. Used your brushes and your weathering tutorial to create some awesome corroded objectives 😃. My series D brushes seemed that have developed a tip though as the hair on the sides have been shortend leaving longer hair in the middle :/ any reason why this happening?
Need to do a Hive Tyrant in Gorgon or Hydra colours. It would be interesting to see this technique on chitin carapace, ti try and get that natural look
Personally, I'd like to see the classic Space Hulk Genestealer colorscheme applied to some of the bigger Tyranid models, but that's entirely a personal want, so I had some more ideas of how to work the colorscheme
Wpuld love to see all the Greater Daemon done on here. LORD OF CHANGE tho would be fantastic if you do it all different rainbow 🌈 sort of colour wings etc. And bice bright colours , pinks , yellow Touquise etc
Fantastic job mate and worth the wait! If only I wasn’t half way through my army I’d use this. Just a quick question on the dry brushing edge highlights. I’m using a small D and I’m getting some smearing at times, is the brush too damp, a little too much paint or a bit of both?
Hey bud, sounds like it yeah, you want your pad only wet enough to show a light sheen of moisture on a dry finger when held to the light, also take your paint carefully from the edges on your pallet, less is better, work it in/off the brush on the pallet, test on back of thumbnail for ref - then take it to the mini :)
The starting from purple for this and the imperial fists is so creative and looks so great. Is there a reason you went with purple? I ordered the series D set a few days ago and want to try painting an orange army using them and may start purple there too if its some witchcraft basecoat lol.
I have just received my set of series d sir and was wondering when you ars stipling for base coats, are you thinning those paints or just wiping away any excess you don't need on the texture palette? I am about to start my great unclean one and any help would be marvelous 😃👍
Thanks so much, dude! Go check out our Ultimate Guide of Drybrushing and you'll get the method. Generally speaking, thinning them a little (making them slightly more wet with the dampening pad) is a good idea as it helps lay the smoothest basecoat possible.😊
@@ArtisOpus you sir are an absolute star! Haha 😃👍. I am patiently waiting for my delivery of said unclean one and a boxe of primaris interscesors assault. I see you getting some amazing results dry brushing those dudes so thought I am going to jump straight in to those 2 sets. I havr not even used the series d yet, hurry up delivery! 👍
That looks splendid, and as someone already said way more interesting in terms of colours and techniques than classic (but always valid) base/wash/ highlight. Do you have any advice on what could be an interesting starting colour different from plain black (like purple for getting to green) for an already quite dark colour? Like for Crimson Fists Kantor Blue? Thanks!
Hey dude - been following you for a while, even bought the brushes (no T-shirt though...) - loving every video and tutorial. Its just dawned on me, one way you might improve the videos is to get hold of a Lazy Susan and just showcase the model a little better at the end. Will help to take your production value up a notch. Keep up the excellent work - looking forward to some more. Hows about some Death Guard or Space Wolves next? ;)
Absolutely dude, we've got one I can dig out! We also need a better camera for final product stills, the video often ends up more accurate than the photos :|
@@ArtisOpus On the topic of video production, I would suggest you look in the camera when you are doing your presentations, rather than on the viewfinder screen above ;)
Now that was an early premiere? Missed that 😔 I must say I love the fact you have test graffiti on you graffiti texture pad 😆 Great video though. Great looking mini again Byron love the way you describe your techniques, it makes it easy for beginners. Keep up the great work
I am going to pretend that this wasn't a dyslexic slip-up 🙄🙄🙄 was meant to be 12 hours later, apparently am/pm are still a struggle for me! Thanks bud, I went pretty in depth on this one, we got a lot of comment sin early videos about things being too baggy, so cut more aggressively, I want to do one in each series which is in depth though (space marines, vehicles, etc) so people can be referred there for an exhaustive 'all bases covered' approach :)
@@ArtisOpus Bud your approach to tutorials is really refreshing and you are very articulate in how you put the techniques across. It is rare these days as everyone is trying to demonstrate golden deamon levels of quality which, while great to look at, are simply not achievable for the majority of us painters. Your tutorials are grounded in simple effective techniques and I think that is why your subs base has increased so rapidly (I wish mine had haha) Coupled with your great quality products it is a wining combination
Can you do one of these for Blood Angels? It would be great for those of us with predominately red armies, as red is such a finicky color to paint and make look good.
You mentioned you stripped the first model, how do you strip your models? Got a unit I'd like to start fresh with but no idea what to use or how, Thanks! :)
Hey dude, search our channel for stripping and you'll see an entire video about it :). I'm a huge fan of biostrip - there's a pinned comment in the video which has a load of viewer quotes/info in it :)
I'd like to see a dry brushing tutorial for the Maw Krusha. The model is ideal for dry brushing and stippling. I have the model and have just received my Navigator D Series brush collection which are great and would love to use them on the am as Krusha but am not sure how Oedipus where to start. Any help would be appreciated.
Question re palette. Sometimes you use one that's totally clean and ither times like this with lots of paint. Can they be cleaned or are you using a new one?
When they are covered in paint you can prime them like a model and use them again. The only reason it is good to use a new one every now and then is that the edges are sharper for testing edge highlight possibilities.
Hey, dude, not for the drybrushes yet, it's been held up by upcoming product release but should be out very soon. We have a beginners' guide drybrushing scheduled very soon (perhaps this weekend) in which we'll cover 'during session' cleaning 😊The most important thing is dampening pad regularly before during and after each paint.
@@ArtisOpus Awesome, looking forward to seeing those videos! Been watching a few already and I'm convinced of the brushes' quality however best practices and maintenance still elude me and I wanna know the basics before committing to a new purchase :) Great work so far, keep up the good job!
You can use metallics but generally the method would be to paint the entire model dark to light silver and then glaze with the green at the very end :)
@@ArtisOpus Ok, then I'll wait for a black power Armor video to come. Your drybrush style is so cool. With others it looks like stone, by you it looks awesome ^_^
Well after your last response I learned how to dry brush, also realized I dont have a brush for it so ya know.... any chance we will see raven guard anything? perhaps a FW contemptor?
Hey dude, my pleasure! Purple base (surprise...) could be purple brown if you like, then it's quite simple really, I'm liking the AK paints currently, buff then ivory, then add white would be legit, that could be any bone colour and off-white though :)
Drybrushing is just airbrushing without the air, and I would argue drybrushing overall when you become proficient with it and practice (recommend buying cheap kids toys and repainting them over and over) can achieve absolutely stunning results.
@artisopus ps would love to see how you do this scheme with some of the new character models from the leviathan. Such as the librarian or captain in terminator armour
Just did a practice run on my first intercessor... Im having difficulty with the stippling; I get a raised paint look across the miniature. any tips on how to avoid that?
It's easily done, mate - especially with beige/end of process highlight colours, which hide in the bristles, I've had to start tutorials again due to exactly this myself, numerous times :D. One top tip is to 'flick' your brush clean on the sharp edge of your pallet frequently between colours - check out our complete guide to drybrushing for an exhaustive covering of everything Series D. Happy painting!
@@ArtisOpus I'd love to see how you paint their vehicles. I think that would be nice change compared to your other tank tutorials. Don't get me wrong, they are great, but your chosen color scheme was bright&colourful. And I get why, it showed clearly how to use your drybrushing technique. I'd love to see how you do dark, dirty and weathered vehicles using drybrushing :) Also, paintng Krieg infantry using drybrushing would be an interesting challenge, these models are smaller and scaled more realistically than Space Marines :)
This looks so great! I've painted my Salamanders with a warmer green (undercoat of "red" gray); what basecoat would you suggest for getting that effect with your method?
You can just use the colours that you normally use and apply them as I do in the video. I'd maybe just go from a Dumbell basecoat or similar as you're going to obscure a lot of your first stage anyway...you can afford to go more vibrant than you think😊
It sounds like you could be stippling more instead of 'whipping' to avoid streaks and soften transitions. It also sounds like your paint could be too wet/could be too much on your brush. You'll see I often remote excess on my texture palette before jumping to the model😊
I'd still like to see a study in fleshtones. Airbrush, layering, I still struggle. I'd love to see a stipple/dry brush tutorial for it!
absolutely!

Personally, I'd like to see the classic Space Hulk Genestealer colorscheme applied to some of the bigger Tyranid models, but that's entirely a personal want, so I had some more ideas of how to work the colorscheme
@@popburnsy3207 Hydra is the classic colour scheme, albeit with black carapace 😁
@@aaronemerson7079 cheers! I like a slightly lighter purple for the fleshy parts, but I can dig it
This may well happen sooner than you think... colours TBD though, really tricky decision!
@@ArtisOpus so many good choices out there, including players own schemes, Jormungandr is superb for contrast as is Leviathan
Well this just made me order a set ..just need you to do a space wolf now.
premiering tonight. ;)
would love to see a space wolf painted wiht this method!
You got your wish, dude!
@@ArtisOpus thx man keep up the great work
Wpuld love to see all the Greater Daemon done on here. LORD OF CHANGE tho would be fantastic if you do it all different rainbow 🌈 sort of colour wings etc. And bice bright colours , pinks , yellow Touquise etc
This is 100% happening as soon as I get the predicted 12 hours to 'speedpaint' it!... it's an entirely different animal to papa :|
@@ArtisOpus Sounds great 👍
Looks great, for the gloss varnish - would munitorum spray or a similar rattlecan gloss varnish work? :)
Well that looks awesome. Nicely Done =)
Will you be selling Xereus purple and Huldra blue in a package with the Series D? ;-)
COMING SOON: AO Quarterly paint subscription box ;). cheers, dude!
Will you be doing some tutorials on how to drybrush Chaos Space Marines?
The starting from purple for this and the imperial fists is so creative and looks so great. Is there a reason you went with purple? I ordered the series D set a few days ago and want to try painting an orange army using them and may start purple there too if its some witchcraft basecoat lol.
Maybe a daft question, but do you clean/remove the paint from the texture palette every so often, or just re-prime it? Or just get a new one?
I re-prime and go again :)
Thanks!
Thanks so much Fabio! When you're going that dark your colours are quite limited... this is why I end up using Huldra blue so much :)
Well I guess I am testing this out on my next salamander squad along with the lava base from yesterday
:DYess! There's this take on lava bases due Tuesday, too
When you basecoat with stippling, do you add a bit of water to the blue paint ?
We pretty much always add water using the dampening pad :)
Now that was an early premiere? Missed that 😔
I must say I love the fact you have test graffiti on you graffiti texture pad 😆
Great video though.
Your tutorials are grounded in simple effective techniques and I think that is why your subs base has increased so rapidly (I wish mine had haha)
Coupled with your great quality products it is a wining combination
You mentioned stripping the miniature.. What do you use to strip the miniature, so I can practice without buying more miniatures.
I use strong alcohol but I am told that Simple Green is the product to use 😊
Thank you
Our pleasure, my dude :)
Can you do one of these for Blood Angels? It would be great for those of us with predominately red armies, as red is such a finicky color to paint and make look good.
we have it covered buddy - check it out here:
ua-cam.com/video/is23CjX2ddQ/v-deo.html
Looks great except for the gloss varnish. I agree that the satin would look better.
@@ArtisOpus Awesome! Thanks so much I'll check it out!
Exactly as below, generally for filming the reason is actually picking whichever one the camera focuses on better :D
hello! is there any video or instructions as to cleaning and maintaining these brushes?
Hey, dude, not for the drybrushes yet, it's been held up by upcoming product release but should be out very soon. We have a beginners' guide drybrushing scheduled very soon (perhaps this weekend) in which we'll cover 'during session' cleaning 😊The most important thing is dampening pad regularly before during and after each paint.
@@ArtisOpus Awesome, looking forward to seeing those videos! Been watching a few already and I'm convinced of the brushes' quality however best practices and maintenance still elude me and I wanna know the basics before committing to a new purchase :)
Great work so far, keep up the good job!
Nice Dark Angel
Could you generally mix stormhost silver and warpstone glow to get a more shiny green color, does this work?
You can use metallics but generally the method would be to paint the entire model dark to light silver and then glaze with the green at the very end :)
Can you add the Black shoulderpad and Backpack? Its typical Salamander
heraldry. Vulkan lives!!!!^^
We could do, however, these are the two best places on the model for demonstrating drybrushing volumes! 😊
@@ArtisOpus
Ok, then I'll wait for a black power Armor video to come. Your drybrush style is so cool.
With others it looks like stone,
by you it looks awesome ^_^
Well after your last response I learned how to dry brush, also realized I dont have a brush for it so ya know.... any chance we will see raven guard anything? perhaps a FW contemptor?
How about some nighthaunt, lots of cloth/ leather... and possible interesting colorsheme's
Would love to know what you use to strip your models? Pretty sure you're in the UK .
Thanks
I usually use very strong alcohol, but I've heard Simple Green is the best :) Thank you for watching!
I'd really like to see Black Templars!
Second this
absolutely - check out our black armour video on the channel we did on a Stormcast model this will certainly help until we get to the Back Templars!
Lol, that’s the shade of green that I paint my Dark Angels
Nice!
A excelent work
Cheers, bud!
why no painting handle. arent you affraid you will smudge anything?
It's because the technique is so aggressive, I prefer a stable base, even if it's slightly less convenient!
Can you do a video with this dry brushing technique for Ultramarines too?
We've got it, dude 😉 ua-cam.com/video/6v5IXAln0MI/v-deo.html
Any chance for getting short Black Templar tutorial?
In the near future this will happen ^_^ For now check out our Black Armour!
If I want to paint white/bone colour Death guard with drybrushing what transitions would you suggest?
And thank you for another great guide!
Absolutely agreed🙌
would I still get the same effect if I just used waaaaghhh flesh as the base? :)) I don't like mixing paints lol
Very similar, dude. Especially given how important the latest stages are for the scheme😊
@@ArtisOpus ay good to know man, your videos are really good highly appreciated :)) simple steps for a great result noice
Could you do a crimson fist in this method.
whoops missed the bit where you said dilute the gloss varnish! mine is SHINY
:) Easily remedied, just keep the fix light so you don't end up with too many layers of different varnish
@@ArtisOpus so I could do a little dry brush over and it should lighten it up?
@artisopus ps would love to see how you do this scheme with some of the new character models from the leviathan. Such as the librarian or captain in terminator armour
Question, how much water is in your dampening pad? I feel like every time I use it the brush gets too wet
1 drop, from the back of the brush, worked in with a finger :)
@@ArtisOpus thank you!
2:34 What is the little thing you kept dipping in?
Fantastic stuff. I'd love to see what you could do with a Datasmith.
That's a really interesting thought, as he's basically cloth, or metal...
Is he one of the Ad Mech minis with a gap in the middle of his cloak? :'(
@@ArtisOpus Oh dear, he is! Thought I found one that wouldn't be terribly complicated...
That's going to be a pain when I finally build him!.
Just did a practice run on my first intercessor... Im having difficulty with the stippling; I get a raised paint look across the miniature. any tips on how to avoid that?
I also totally forgot to wash the new dry brushes... could that be it? it almost look like dust or paint flecks raised across the model
It's totally from not washing the brush... thankfully I have 20 more assault intercessors to get this down!
Sooo cool. Pls a Deathwatch next Time. Suffer the Xeno 😁
This work with any chapter just swap the colours?
Basically yeah dude! We've got quite a few demonstrates with small variations in techniques, Space Wolves coming soon :)
Maybe you could paint some Death Korps of Krieg?
I would love to try this... grimdark? ^_^
@@ArtisOpus I'd love to see how you paint their vehicles. I think that would be nice change compared to your other tank tutorials. Don't get me wrong, they are great, but your chosen color scheme was bright&colourful. And I get why, it showed clearly how to use your drybrushing technique. I'd love to see how you do dark, dirty and weathered vehicles using drybrushing :)
Also, paintng Krieg infantry using drybrushing would be an interesting challenge, these models are smaller and scaled more realistically than Space Marines :)
This looks so great! I've painted my Salamanders with a warmer green (undercoat of "red" gray); what basecoat would you suggest for getting that effect with your method?
You can just use the colours that you normally use and apply them as I do in the video. I'd maybe just go from a Dumbell basecoat or similar as you're going to obscure a lot of your first stage anyway...you can afford to go more vibrant than you think😊
when i try to apply this to my eldar, they always look really dusty and the armor has some stripes on the transitions, what am i doing wrong? :)
It sounds like you could be stippling more instead of 'whipping' to avoid streaks and soften transitions. It also sounds like your paint could be too wet/could be too much on your brush. You'll see I often remote excess on my texture palette before jumping to the model😊
@@ArtisOpus thanks mate :-) i think the next one i tryed is much better
