Hello Angela: This is an anthem to sadness, disappointment and misery...still, it is quite melodic and easy on the ear. Always loved this tune in spite of its somber vibe. Thank you.
I couldn't agree more. Despite the lyrics, I've always really enjoyed this.
One of the most beautiful songs ever made.❤
I'm 60+ years old and lost my parents 20 years ago, not a day goes by that I don't think of them. I'm so blessed to have parents like mine.
My mum died from cancer in 1985 when I was 28. From the moment my mum had been diagnosed and given a few months to live, my life changed forever and I definitely grew up and stopped acting a clown. I guess what I am trying to describe it that her illness, suffering and death took the fun out of my life for a very long time.
Cute little innocuous melody with sad, heartbreaking lyrics. One of my favorite sad songs.
Exactly...! Was about to mention that dichotomy myself...=)
Pretty much what I would've said,BUT.....It's NOT about him.
I usually only pull this one out if I’m driving alone because it guts me every time. 😥 Beautiful singer songwriter style of music! And that’s so funny she said “sounds like BeeGees because for a long time I thought it was them!
He didn't just lose a love...he got stood up on his wedding day with a church full of people.
They made a movie about that line called "Smokey and the Bandit". Sorry - Just needed a laugh after this fine but sad song.
He cried because he got stiffed with the payment!
It was a huge hit back in the day.
Love this song! I love the melody. It is beautifully written. And yes, Gilbert O’Sullivan wrote the song.
When this song came out it was on my list of songs for Ma to teach me on her piano...I then played it at our St. Bridget talent contest & when I looked up from my score sheet everyone in the audience was tearing up, as they knew my Ma had lost her husband & my father years earlier...It is the most emotional song of this era & it looks to have hit you as well, senorita. Dia Uno..
I just realized that this song is of a piece with Eleanor Rigby - sad, intimate, minor key, jingle beat, with orchestral accompaniment. And still, it stands as a unique musical statement. It's as much a part of my treasure chest as any Beatles song.
It's in F major.
Eleanor Rigby is my #1 favourite Beatles song, not even the slightest question about it. And I LOVE "Alone Again" like mad.
on point dude.
@@felixmidas3245 I didn't realize it was major key.
@@joannerichards1750 It's hard to realize because in between there are quite a few minor chords and the mood is so melancholic but the overall key is F major.
One of the great many depression songs of the 1970s! Joining this: Seasons in the Sun, All By Myself, Without You and others.
Oh ! Yes! "Seasons In The Sun" loved by English Football fans everywhere..
"We Had Joy, We Had Fun, We Had West Ham On The Run
But THe Joy Didn't Last
As The xxxxxxxx Ran Too Fast.....very poignant....
@@Isleofskye Go HAMMERS !!!
@@marksandsmith6778 They certainly "went" in 1972 when they came to Millwall 49 years ago Mark.
They were chased all the way down The Old Kent Road b4 they return to the sanctity of East London :)
@@Isleofskye
Ah ha!
They didn't look for Harry the Dog in Skye.
But.
My neighbour's a Lions fan. Seems a good bloke and he's called Henry.
Puzzle.
Hello Mark. That's a coincidence as my next-door neighbour's neighbour is a huge Lions fan :)
Sadly, Harry Le Chien has gone to THe Great Dog Kennel In The Sky, My Friend...
Oh my. I'm old enough to remember this song when it was a hit and knowing those lyrics coming towards the end of the song 🥺
You didn’t stop it once. You stopped swaying when he mentioned his father dying. We all feel this song like you did. He has another hit called Claire. He wrote both songs.
Well Said but in The UK he had multiple hits , of which this one and Claire were the biggest followed by "Nothing Rhymed"/"We Will" "Get Down" "Matrimony" "Oh! Wakka Do Wakka Day " etc :)
@@Isleofskye you cant play CLAIRE any more. It could be innocent I suppose.
@@marksandsmith6778 i believe Clare was his manager or record producer's daughter and he used to babysit. And she had a crush on him ( a 5 or 6 year old crush) .his response was that song
@@shanenolan8252 Absolutely correct, in the day it was taken as it was intended, but society has changed so much today people see another aspect to that lovely melody ! the same could be said for this song too, when he sings 'I was feeling bright and gay' today that means something else, but then it meant 'Being Happy'
@@Colin623 exactly colin
And to think he wrote this when he was only 21!! 😭
Gosh I love this song yet so sad!! My parents would play this at home on our record player. So glad you reacted to this.🤗🎵
Thank you for the reaction, Ang!! It is weird how one song can bounce along so joyfully, but be about such sadness! Genius writing by Gilbert!!
Unbelievably, he wrote this wonderful classic tune at the age of 21!!
Yes that's the amazing thing about it, how he could relate to such bad times being so young ! The song has stood the test of time though, sounds brilliant today as it did then !
Most underated song writer of all time
This kind of things happen, He put to music and describes what a lot people feel at some time in our lives.
Wow, this song had so much heart felt meaning. We lost our beloved mom, 1 year ago. This was moms favorite song. Listening to this song, has me in tears. Thank you for the great memory. RIP - MOM. Love you always.
Gilbert O Sullivan was een geweldige tekstschrijver en zanger.....zijn muziek blijft tot in eeuwigheid geweldig
The power of simplicity
The power seems to stem from the simplicity but, on closer inspection, it really comes from the nearly perfect coordination of melody, lyric, rhythm, scoring and, of course, the harmony. This song is so unfairly underrated. I wish I could shake Gilbert O'Sullivan's hand, personally and thank him.
I remember growing up in 13 foster homes and hearing this song. I used to sit in my room and cry all alone. Always felt alone and unloved.
...❤❤❤❤
How are you now?
@@danielnordeen8410 Hi Daniel, I'm great now. Been married for 38 yrs, have 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren. God Bless
@@terrymalone1844 good for you!
Sorry for that. I hope things are better now.
This was Gilbert's piece o' fiction, too, but the lilting melody so mismatched with the lyrics was stunning.
I've always liked this song. It's a good one to listen to when you're in that mood. It's very cathartic. And, for me, it's a reminder that when life has got you down, there are people out there who have it worse.
I absolutely love your reactions ! A true appreciation for music and lyrics !
You should listen to his song Claire. It shows his brighter side.
All-time classic.....pure gem 💎
So underrated.
this is so funny. i had just listened to this song from his offical music vid, and 11 seconds later you posted it on your channel. i had to listen to it again. and it was so much easier having you listening too. i guess it's true- misery loves company, not alone again, naturally.
I watched the expressions on your face and know you felt it, yes, sad song. It is part of life. Makes me remember when my father passed, my mothers heart was broken. Then she passed not long after. Thanks for sharing this pretty girl.
I remember hearing this song on the radio 📻 as a kid, beautiful song, and sad 👍🎤
One of the best songs ever ever written yeah its EXCELLENT🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Please don't take this the wrong way. But I have been watching video reactions for a year now. You by far in my humble opinion ,have the biggest heart of them all! If I ever met a woman like you, I would never let her get away! Thank you for being you!
So glad I grew up in the 70s!
Still I wake up every day put one foot in front of the other and make it through the day. the toughest part is when you lay back down at night still feeling all alone even in a crowded room. standing in a darkened corner not trying to be seen or noticed. just trying to leave unnoticed by anyone.
It's absolutely gorgeous but surprisingly tragic. The lyrics might shock. "And climbing to the top will throw myself off" a tower! 😐😮
Although, this song is before my time
(I was born in 1978, so my decade was the 90s)
I’m extremely well acquainted with it and have been so for more than 20 years now.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
It is one of a very few that gets me each and every time I hear it.
he wrote his own songs it was one of my favorites back in 72 as a kid so as a little kid in 66 i started to have my favorites you would hear on the car radio and then you would listen to the albums etc.
Yeah, I remember. I believe it was in the top 10 for a whole year. And it was played on the radio several times a day
This came out when I was a very young kid but it's forever burned in my brain.
Very few songs are written this way and Gilbert O'Sullivan made a masterpiece here another song like tis is " Time " by Alan Parson's Project I recommend that song too .
I heard him in person and it was better than the record. He was fantastic. Good memories.
So glad I found you!
So REFRESHING to have someone wait until the end for commentary...
SUBSCRIBED!!!❤❤❤
This song has always struck me as very Beatles-like, though now that you mention it I can also hear the Bee Gees as well. Lyrically, the song is all too relatable to me, having lost both parents, my only sibling, all grandparents, and various extended family and friends over the years (the friends not to death, but to moving on). Alone again, naturally, indeed.
1972 hit #1. A song for the ages. Sad but healing.
Played this at my Mums funeral, love it so much bitters sweet
Its a hard song for some people to listen to, but for others, its how life is, things happen, life happens, and it speaks the honest truth!
Sad songs have a special place on my playlist. I really don't understand why I like listening to heart break songs. Can't explain it, it's just the way it is I guess.
A true classic and beautiful song, very popular in South America in the early 70’s. I never realize how sad the song was until I began to learn English. I guess back them the melody alone was good enough.
I have been through all these emotions. lost my love, thought about suicide, lost my parents and family members.
I never get tired of this song, although it always makes me feel a little sad
This song always pulls firmly on the heartstrings. Your reaction was great/ Here's to your next one!
I was in love with him 13 years of age then how beautiful
Hermosa hermosa canción.
Every word of the lyrics works and works beautifully. I am so grateful for the things I have and more so for people and things I've lost and treasure more than ever.
God Bless You, Gilbert O'Sullivan!
I know this all too well. In 1990 my 28 year old wife Gail and my 4 year year old daughter Jennifer were both killed by a drunk driver. I'm now 65 and I've been alone ever since.
This song brings tears to my eyes when my dad passed and then 20 years later on my mom passed thats how i feel today
You must listen to 'Nothing Rhymed' his first hit I believe, around 1971, the lyrics are absolutely stunning !
mi amor ,que cara linda,bella
Enjoyed your reaction. Would like to recommend a group called Bread. Some of their songs that I believe you would really enjoy: If, Baby I’m-a Want You, Make It With You, Diary, Everything I Own, plus many more great hits. Thanks for considering.
“Aubrey” and “If” for sure…
@@ChicagoDB And "Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", and "Lost Without Your Love". Their up-tempo stuff is worth listening to, as well.
"Make It With You" is still in My Top 5 songs of alltime and I bought my first record in England in 1960 :)
What I love about listening to the reaction posts is that I too start listening to the lyrics more. I know this song, but I've never really listened to the words ... thank you.
Gilbert O'Sullivan would meet people who felt sad for him. He said, it's just a song none of this happened to me.
This song came out at the time my fiancee of the time broke up with me and it helped me endure, knowing someone else knew the feeling. It seems strange, but I'd imagine half the people in the world know that feeling and the longer you live the more certain it is you'll know it before it's all said and done and accordingly as sad as it may make you feel if you don't know it yet, it's songs like this that can help you get through it.
I am over half a century old, and have just realized Paul McCartney did not sing "Alone Again " Time to re-examine my life. Good vid!
Made you think about life.
You’re spot on with The Bee Gees comparison. When I heard it for the first time I thought of The Bee Gees also, and some later Beatles stuff as well. Gilbert did indeed write the song himself, and did so at the age of 15, believe it or not. It’s hard to imagine after hearing this song, but his songs were usually much happier and playful. Great song that holds a lot of memories for me. I love your videos! Keep them coming!😊
It was #1 in 1973 for a reason.
McCartneyesque melodramatic melancholy...
Saddest song ever written.
He is a great storyteller, may I suggest “All They Wanted to Say” by Gilbert O’ Sullivan. You really appreciate the lyrics and that song is his tribute to 9/11. It is very well written and unbelievably sad. It’s not well known so it would be great to have people hear it.
He has another one, called Get Down and is a more upbeat tune. It was released in 1973 and so was this one.
You should react to "Clair" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. It's a very cute song and I think you'll like it.
Try "Get Down" for a happier vibe by the very talented Gilbert O'Sullivan next'!
Perhaps the first song I vividly remember. Was on radio constantly along with Bill Withers Lean on Me. Always have a soft spot for this song. I was probably around 10 years old. ❤️
My personal anthem now
One of the top songs of 1972. It's both gut-wrenching and beautiful at the same time. He followed this with another big hit single called :"Claire."
Before the song is over, O'Sullivan questions the existence of God, sings about the deaths of his parents and considers the ways that grief can absolutely destroy you.
It's heartbreak, from the saddest, most melodramatic situations imaginable and if you meet a songwriter anywhere who says they wouldn’t munch off their own to pen as inch-perfect a florid pop trifle as 'Alone Again (Naturally" - they’re lying.
The year's second best-seller in the U.S, after "American Pie".
Great reaction DayOne and also a great song from a wonderful artist.. Peace
You're so multi-faceted and beautiful in all your incarnations! Intelligent, thoughtful, and of course physically beautiful! I can only imagine! :)
Happy for you. I can identify with this song.
It's funny seeing a new generation discovering music classics. I'm getting old!
I was seven when this song was released. I was always afraid that my safety and love at that age would one day be taken away. All I can say is that with God's grace and mercy, you manage to keep breathing and a different life takes that life's place (A new normal). Time helps, but this song still pulls at the heartstrings because there are so many parts that I can relate to.
I feel like many people miss how utterly depressing the very first lyrics of the song are. Dude came out of the gate and immediatly said he was gonna climb to the top of a tower and throw himself off.
Hold them close, girl!
You show your feelings so well.
Massivery love this
Another nice reaction, which picks up on the main points of the song, which is itself, great.
Angela - Gilbert O Sullivan is quite unique. You really need to hear Claire. Another big hit of his. It's not a sad song either.
Amazing singer songwriter very underrated
Great #1 song. Love it! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
It's a sad song but beautiful just the same
a tear jerker for sure ! its so true too but the Irish are sentimental arent they ? love you the song and Gilbert O Sullivan !
You progressed perfectly keep up the good work you can go so much farther.
Allen Jackson..where were you when the world stopped turning
You missed the 1st verse..due to reading the crossing caption..where you hear 1st meaning where he was heading to top floor to jump..
Wax written beautifully plus Score was as soft and excellently provided😊
i love your content, ur amazing keep it up
Great memories
Great song. -- Chicago - "Questions 67 and 68" studio version and "Wishing You Were Here" From the New Years Rockin Eve Chicago with the Beach Boys.
It is more or less a melancholy tale of life, sooner or later our loved ones die, or someone will let you down, and it's just an artist expressing that feeling we all go through. So, to me it's not sad, it's just a reminder that only those who dare to love can be hurt. Those too scared to love never get to understand that pain. So it is a good thing.
Great song....true lyrics....life comes and goes....we come and leave the world by ourselves.....it shouldn't be sad if you believe in a new beginning..... maybe not the same..... maybe better..... with all the good souls and memories revisited
it was the first song I heard on the radio after finding out my mom had died.
I must have heard this a thousand times over the years since its release - yet today is the first time I have properly listened to the lyrics and taken in the meaning . Sad indeed .
