His Barry Manilow Live 1977 album is also great! Has almost all of his hits at the time on it. I owned the 8track as a teenager ( tells you how long ago that was🤣). I played it until it broke. You can find the entire album here on youtube 😊
Manilow was my guilty pleasure in high school. LOL Weekend in New England was my Fav:) I played violin so I loved his use of Classical music for his base structure of his music.
Yes! Weekend in New England, I swear I saw a TV Special with Barry and Valerie Bertinelli performing a version, now I can't find it, and think the dreamt the whole thing!
One of the best crooners EVER, with a very deep rabbit hole to explore. You should try “Looks Like We Made It,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again” or “Somewhere in the Night.”
He was a real hit-maker in the 70's and 80's-- for himself and some big names like Dionne Warwick (Whitney's auntie). Listen to "Looks Like We Made it" "Copa Cabana (At The Copa") and "I Write the Songs."Also, he wrote some songs for movies ! He also wrote some jungles for famous product commercials.
Here’s an interesting fact for you. This record along with many other of Barry’s records was produced by Ron Dante. Who’s that you ask? Well he’s the one singing sugar sugar in the archies song you just listened to.
The original name of the song was “ Oh Brandy “ by Scott English. Clive Davis suggested Barry record the cover song . With permission he recorded it as “ Mandy “ . Barry Manilow is one of the GOAT’s.
Love Barry Manilow. Some folks don't know that he started his career writing for TV commercials like: "I'm stuck on Band-Aid, cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!" and "You deserve a break today, so get up and get away, to McDonalds!" also "And like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!" Among others. He never believed his voice was good enough to break into pop music. As for this song "Mandy?" It was origionally written by someone else, and waa called "Brandy"
Saw him 4 times at the Universal back in the day. Always did a New Years show. He is the reason i started playing piano in High School and still do. I probably play something of his daily. Arranged for Bette Midler before this shot him to stardom. Wonderful musician and pianist. Thanks for posting.
You have such wonderful reactions and you're such a wonderful person Angela. I've been watching a lot of your reactions lately and subscribed today. Barry Manilow's songs have been a guilty pleasure of mine as well. This song in particular makes me look back at my younger days and how easily and thoughtlessly I'd break up with someone for the most idiotic reasons. Granted, I was one the receiving end of these breakups as well, but I can only reflect on my own actions and I knew some really nice, sweet girls/women and never really gave them a chance. Songs like "Mandy" make me wonder what could have been and it makes me sad to know I'll never be able to find out.
It was never cool in school to like Barry Manilow back then in my era and I was early primary school years, but I always liked his music, he connected and wrote some great songs that could reach out, but this song reminds me of a girl named Mandy Becker, I had a huge crush on her because she reminded me of the lead female in a movie called the Magnificent gunfighter, which my mom took me to see during school hours, my mom loved westerns, great movie btw, cowaboys hawt girls and samurai swords what could a kid want more, understand we were years behind the US so this would be mid to late 70s I’m still very low single digits maybe 6. I’ll never forget her, she sent me away, just like the song but in reverse. I asked her out on her way back to school from her lunch break she lived just up the road from our primary school and would go home every lunch time, took me weeks to work up the courage to ask her out, she was so hawt, easily the best looking girl in school, we were both pretty popular in out class’s back then too, still she sent me away. Songs always reminds me of her. Great reaction, one thing I do get from you is you have a great ear and great taste regardless of the era.
Hello Angela: People are rarely indifferent about Barry Manilow; they either love him or hate him. He was one of the most prolific musicians of his era though and definitely left his mark on pop music, for sure. I just noticed in the video how high he sits in relation to the piano keyboard. Never noticed that before. I enjoyed this song theme series of yours. It resulted in some interesting comments, background facts, and more than a few rediscoveries. Thank you for all the effort you put into it!👍👍❤❤
Manilow was 6' 2'' in his prime .... and has always complained about his long arms and legs ..... kind of a fun fact .... * I believe the video in this clip was at the Grammys in February of 1976 ....
dont care about those who hate him with utmost respect to you, here in Australia he is a superstar, his songs are incredible xoxo i can tell you love him x
Incredible musician and songwriter... and a pretty good singer, as well. I read somewhere that he had planned to title this song BRANDY, but Looking Glass already had a song by that name so he changed it to MANDY. Don't know if that's true, but I did read it somewhere.
Fine voice. Ready to Take a Chance Again, Made it Though the rain are well worth a listen. Only those lacking confidence limit themselves to one genre and concern themselves with what others think.
Mandy made Manilow a star. Before that he was a jingle writer - “I am stuck on a bandaid and bandaids stuck on me” and “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there”. Then came Mandy and I Write the Songs and the rest is history. 😁❤️
Barry's seating position in front of the piano was pretty unique as well! It was in between sitting and standing, and I don't know the story behind that, but I'm sure someone else will let you know! Later!
Barry explained that in an interview one time… he said that it was mainly so he could be seen better behind the piano, but that he also liked that it helped him to “dig in” when he plays.
You know, he was extraordinarily talented. Our 7/8 grade Choir Instructor was his twin, voice and piano playing, it was weird. He cool…, Mr Jones. “I write the songs that make the whole world song , I wrote the songs i’d love and special things…., I wrote the songs”. My favorite, at least Mr Jones’. lol
some others not included in previous comments: I write the songs, Tryin to get the feeling, Copacabana. But I think his best song was Could it be magic. Started out writing jingles for tv ads/commercials. An underrated songwriter/singer.
I hope you realise how special and unbelievably beautiful you are, I'm not a prevent or anything but I love your reactions and looking how gorgeous you are 💜
Always loves Barry even when it wasn't 'cool' saw him in concert..he was bloody amazing..try weekend in new England..somewhere in the night the great could it be magic..obviously the famous.Copacabana
This song was originally called Brandy and it was up tempo lol MANILOW slowed it down and they changed the name because there had just been another hit song called Brandy. This song launched his career and he's into his 6th decade and pushing 80 years old but still has an amazing voice
did you know that Barry Manilow was a Jingle writer when he started in music, I am stuck on band aide cause band aide's stuck on me, like a good neighbor, state farm is there, and many many more .
All hail the 'King Of Crescendo'. Barry is the male version of Barbra Streisand and people either love his music or hate it.. I personally love most of his songs and this one in particular. To each their own, though.
back around 1993, I was working as a copier tech. I was in an office working on a machine, kinda singing along under my breath with the instrumental music playing.. one of the girls in the office looks at me and says "you know this song?" and I'm like "well yeah.. its Mandy by Barry Manilow". she looks at the other girl and says "not sure which is worse, she knows who it is or that she knows all the words"
Interesting that like karen Carpenter, he didn't want to be a front of audience ,film (tv,movie)singer he was a jingle advert (commercial )writer ,who composed, someone heard him the rest is his records, like Robert Pattinson english actor ,who wasn't interested in performing, but now does ,try Barry Manilow Copacabana (dance music)
The great Ray Stevens dedicated a song to Barry. Ray released the song in 1979, and it was a big hit for him. Didn't hurt Barry's career, either. The song is: "I Need Your Help, Barry Manilow." Give it a listen. Here's a link for you: ua-cam.com/video/7xU7MpvINUQ/v-deo.html It's a good song. Keep rocking!
Something from Emerson Lake and Palmer. But what? There is so much diversity. Something from the Brain Salad Surgery album. Toccata? Jerusalem? Or the unbelievable "Karn Evil Nine"? one impression at a time.
Most people don't get the story of the song but if one listens carefully, it says at the start: "I remember all my life, raining down as cold as ice, shadows of a Man, A Face thru windows, crying on the night, the nights goes in, due morning just another day, happy people pass my way..." It tells the story of a sad and tormented man that due to his insecurity and jealousy, destroyed his perfect and true love affair (shadows of a man, a face thru windows *imaginary foes*) and broke his relation with his girl (I guess she was too beatiful) and sent her away eventhough she was really loyal and loving but when you're on a self destroying Rage, you blind yourself to Reality and you see what only you can see... Then they meet again and thru his pain and suffering apologizes saying "Well you came and you gave without taking, but I've sent you away, Oh Mandy, will you kiss me and stop me from shaking, but I need you today, Oh Mandy" and the second part reads: "Standing on the edge of time (meaning, Living without her seems like an Eternal punishment) I walked away, when love was mine, caught up in a world, etc..." It is basically a tormentous love song of Redemption, Repentance & Appreciation for the love he nearly lost and that Hopefully she can forgive him and take him back... Does it make sense now?
Barry wrote a lot of jingles I am stuck on band-aid brand because band-aid is stuck on me, You deserve a break today McDonalds, Like a good neighbor State Farm is there. To name a very few
I liked his music as far back as 6 years old, my dad was disappointed to say the least, he didn't forbid me from listening to his music though. It would be the equivalent of preferring ballet to football. So for me, this is not a guilty pleasure song because I was able to stand up to my father at an early age. I disagreed with maybe 80% of the songs on this list because if I like a song, I will listen to it no matter who's around. I don't feel much guilt when it comes to music or movies. If the song brings you joy, then that's all that matters. If the world laughs at you, let them laugh. I laugh last because they will never feel joy like I do. Don't ever feel embarrassed about something that makes you feel good.
"Could it be Magic" live on the Midnight Special is a spectacular performance from Barry Manilow
agreed:)
Yep!👍
His Barry Manilow Live 1977 album is also great! Has almost all of his hits at the time on it. I owned the 8track as a teenager ( tells you how long ago that was🤣).
I played it until it broke.
You can find the entire album here on youtube 😊
Yes! Yes! Then the version he had Donna Summer do... he even does her version in some concerts.. its faster but just as pretty.
I am so relieved you mentioned a good one and didn't mention Copacabana. Another one that's powerful is Looks Like We've Made it.
Studio musician is an awesome song too. Any of his, my mom loved his music. She has dimentia now 😪
Me 2, never let my friends know I was a fan
One of the best crooners EVER, with a very deep rabbit hole to explore. You should try “Looks Like We Made It,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again” or “Somewhere in the Night.”

Barry has sooo many great songs. U should do more from him.
He was smooooth and mellow for a lots of years
Here’s an interesting fact for you. This record along with many other of Barry’s records was produced by Ron Dante. Who’s that you ask? Well he’s the one singing sugar sugar in the archies song you just listened to.
@ Rick Gibson - Ron Dante also sang on a song called "Tracy." I also think he sang on "Leader of the Laundramat."
Ill add that he wrote the jingle " plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is"
Wow I remember when I was a little kid back in the 70s he was a huge performer. This really brings back memories for me miss those days so much 🤔
Im glad you found Barry. Weekend in New England is good too
omg your smile lights up the room when you listen
The Great Barry Manilow. There are others "Copa Cabana" & "I Write the Songs" Just to name two.
someone was peeling onions while listening to this song.
This song flash's me back to Germany, stationed there in the Army, dancing with a girl in a bar....
Angela, I am glad that you reacted to Barry Manilow. There are at least two dozen hit songs, like Mandy, that you should react to and enjoy. :)
The original name of the song was “ Oh Brandy “ by Scott English. Clive Davis suggested Barry record the cover song . With permission he recorded it as “ Mandy “ . Barry Manilow is one of the GOAT’s.
This song is so relaxing and soothing. I love easy listening music.
You’d love all Barry’s hits! He has a ton just like the Carpenters. Saw him in Vegas a couple years ago and he still sounds amazing!
LOVE Barry!! 💖💖
Beautiful reaction
Thank you for this
This is the type of Pop i grew up on. I'm a classic rock guy but i love all the music from my gen. Music was music.
Love Barry Manilow.
Some folks don't know that he started his career writing for TV commercials like: "I'm stuck on Band-Aid, cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!" and "You deserve a break today, so get up and get away, to McDonalds!" also "And like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!" Barry Manilow’s career spans decades. Beginning in the 70’s through today, he is still performing.
Absolutely love Barry

He wrote many commercial jingles that you may recognize!
More Bary Manilow please ❤❤❤

Makes anyone want to have a Brandy listening to that hit.
I love Barry so glad he came. I love his simplicity

I write the songs!! A classic of his!
Barry and Billy Joel are both New Yorkers who are both great singer/songwriters that are also awesome pianists.
The love we are all seeking in life. Don't send your Mandy away.

No one hates Barry. Everybody loves him. Only people in Hell hate the Barry.
Just a great song. The way he holds back near the end is a great vocal delivery.
The Jingle King. He wrote some of the most memorable commercial jingles in history.
Checkout “looks like we made it”
Takes me back to junior high…. Oh Mandy 🎶
Love this song.
Incredible musician and songwriter... and a pretty good singer, as well.
I read somewhere that he had planned to title this song BRANDY, but Looking Glass already had a song by that name so he changed it to MANDY. Don't know if that's true, but I did read it somewhere.
I’m still a fan of Barry Manilow, and have been since I was a kid.
Beautiful lyrics and wonderful voice.
another Manilow song that’s great is - Can’t Smile Without You 💙
Barry's first huge hit. Went to #1. ♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
Barry got his start singing jinggles in commercials. Listen to Time In New England, great song of his.
I like Barry manIlow and this song it's really it's been forever since I have heard this song
Nothing wrong with some Barry Manilow 😎
That's one high piano stool Barry's got there.
Fine voice. Ready to Take a Chance Again, Made it Though the rain are well worth a listen. Only those lacking confidence limit themselves to one genre and concern themselves with what others think.
The original title was Brandy, but a huge hit by that title had already been released, so it was switched to Mandy.

I would recommend Barry's "Twenty Four Hours A Day". Also a great one!
some others not included in previous comments: I write the songs, Tryin to get the feeling, Copacabana. But I think his best song was Could it be magic. Started out writing jingles for tv ads/commercials. An underrated songwriter/singer.
I am an unapologetically proud "fanilow."
Such a HUGE hit
I hope you realise how special and unbelievably beautiful you are, I'm not a prevent or anything but I love your reactions and looking how gorgeous you are 💜
Mandy is one of the most beautiful songs of all time
Always loves Barry even when it wasn't 'cool' saw him in concert..he was bloody amazing..try weekend in new England..somewhere in the night the great could it be magic..obviously the famous.Copacabana
Barry also did a most excellent version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber song "Memory."
This song was originally called Brandy and it was up tempo lol MANILOW slowed it down and they changed the name because there had just been another hit song called Brandy. This song launched his career and he's into his 6th decade and pushing 80 years old but still has an amazing voice
This one is for you. Barry's tribute song to his GP

Nobody of that era could touch Linda, she was beyond 🖤

Somebody once said this was about Brandy because of his alcohol addiction but changed it to Mandy ,lyrics make more sense too
Karen Carpenter and Manilow were my first two albums.
Angela, You done well but don't stop, he has so much more to offer! Investigate, you will not be disappointed.

Would love to see your reaction to his masterpiece Could It Be Magic
NO 1 song in America back in 1975 ! imagine how America was back then ....
Oh Margie, you came and you brought me a turkey..... Simpsons got me on this one. Still an excellent song and reaction.
I've got one more Guilty Pleasure tune for you, Olivia Newton-John - Magic
Would love to see your reaction to Lady in Red by Chris De Burgh

But if things had worked out she might have been Mandy Manilow… so things probably worked out for the best.
Listening to _talented_ people is a "guilty" pleasure, because people are so happy to display the garbage they normally listen to...
We all know why Barry sent her away.
Have you reacted to dr hook ? if not play sharing the night together .....
