    Build Fix is my monthly series with a simple goal -- helping viewers choose the right PC parts to build with when they are building a new gaming computer. Each episode covers multiple builds submitted by viewers, combing through parts lists to recommend the best CPU and GPU combos, the best SSDs for a gaming PC, the best memory for a gaming PC, the best gaming PC cases, the best gaming PC motherboards, and generally speaking the best bang-for-your-buck PC hardware so you can build a cost effective rig with maximum performance per dollar.

      To be fair, when the price difference isn't huge, having the igpu can come in handy in a lot of ways (troubleshooting or gpu suddenly dying, to name a couple)

    Hey, that's me! Thanks for the feedback and upgrade options on my build, Paul 🙂 You nailed it with the monitors; started off with the 1080p one and purchased the 1440p one a few years later. I've debated upgrading the platform to DDR5 as you pointed out, however, instead of going for a 13th/14th gen CPU, I'm considering waiting for 15th gen to hopefully have a better CPU upgrade path down the road.
    As a side note, at the time when I purchased the 12600k + mobo (combo for $255 USD), the equivalent DDR5 RAM and Z690 mobo was close to $350 USD by itself, not factoring in the cost of the CPU. As others have pointed out, Canadian pricing on tech and hardware in general is 10-15% higher than US folks unfortunately.
    The 4090 FE "blank canvas" build was fantastic value AND performance, even factoring in a slightly overpriced GPU!

      Dude -- nothing against Paul but AMD is absolutely smoking Intel as of right now and 12 months from now the situation for Intel is going to be even more dire. Further beyond 12 months things may start to get even again. I recommend seriously looking at your upgrade paths before making a decision.

    • @MattJDylan
      @MattJDylan Місяць тому

      >better upgrade path
      >intel
      Choose one... not to mention the next gen won't even have hyperthreading and potentially less cores...
      That said, if you can wait, ALWAYS wait to see what other options come around with the new intel and amd cpus coming up...

    • @NoobSniper
      @NoobSniper Місяць тому

      @@MattJDylan Worst comes to worst, if 15th gen isn't great, 13th and 14th gen CPUs and mobos will likely drop in price anyways so works out that way. Could always go AMD as well with a 7800X3D or 8000 X3D equivalent if it makes more sense, price to performance wise 👍

    • @MattJDylan
      @MattJDylan Місяць тому

      @@NoobSniper yeah exactly! Having more options viable options is always best, even when it means waiting some months for new stuff to come out: if worst comes to worst, decent older stuff will get cheaper (like intel 12th gen or radeon 6000 gpus)

    I too am still on anAM4 platform and had recently upgraded from an R5 3600 to an R7 5800x3D when I saw it went on sale for less than 290 bucks, I then added a second 16GB kit of Vengeance LPX 3200 cl16 to get a total of 32GB of 3200 cl16 RAM. This removed all the hitching and stuttering I had initially experienced in Cyberpunk 2077.
    Also agreed that the Thermalright heatsink is more than enough for the AMD processors.
    This video has been very validating for my upgrade decisions.

      I have a Gigabyte Eagle 6700XT.
      So far most of the displays I have access to are 1080p, I aim for 70 - 80 FPS so that I can limit it back down to 60 fps and feel good that even in the heat of things, I'll still have enough headroom to push out my display's refresh rate.
      While the R5 3600 worked great for optimized current titles like Doom and gave me adequately high enough average frame rates in Cyberpunk (around 70-75fps at 1080p native) and RoboCop: Rogue City that used the new UE5 engine, I'd get hitching and stuttering in Cyberpunk in particular and less so (but still noticeable stutters) in RoboCop. Changing graphical settings would raise the average FPS numbers but didn't solve the hitching, which led me to believe that the R5 3600 was getting a little long in the tooth, so I pulled the trigger when I noticed the 5800X3D went on sale.

    Or even cheaper Lian-Li Lancool 216. And then get a 1000W+ PSU instead. That 850W is a bit on the low side for a 4090 system.

    Nice video. My R5 3600 machines will likely get 5700X upgrades at some point, but they're not my main game machines so it's less of an issue as their GPU's are the bottleneck at the moment.
    Only thing I don't really agree with is spending extra for WiFi on an ATX motherboard. It's something most will never need or use and a wired connection is going to be more consistent for gaming. I'd shift the difference in price to storage or peripherals or a good Cat6e cable.
    If it was a Mini-ITX build, then yeah, it's effectively portable so you could run into scenarios where WiFi's your only option. Plus it's generally included on most boards that size anyway.

    Worth noting that unless they plan on replacing entirely, buying ddr5 now makes more sense because when Intel launches the next platform it will likely be ddr5 only going forward. So if they plan on upgrading and not changing everything they can save a little bit. If they already have a ddr4 system I'd say unless essential upgrading to a Intel system might be worth waiting for Intel core ultra 200 (terrible naming Intel! ) and grab clearance 1700 socket boards if they still want that to save even more. With the recent top end Intel chip issues might also be better to avoid these until that gets resolved.

    One thing that was overlooked since there's so many things to consider so I get it... not all drives that have dram cache list that they do. Perfect example the Team MP34 that was cheaper than the MP33 Paul chose at 12:42 has a dram cache, but doesn't list it. IMO better to get the dram drive so you're less boxed in if you ever pick up heavier work loads that would be slowed down by not having the cache. Paying more is debatable in it's value, but in this example the drive with dram was cheaper. Also, I agree Paul I don't get why some people get the ick when you talk about Asrock mobos, like they split off from ASUS and are just as good as MSI and Gigabyte mobos in quality/issues. My B650 Live mixer has been fine for me. Besides last few times CPU's have had issues it's been ASUS boards that are overvolting and causing damage.

    Welcome to the hellscape that is the Canadian PC price market, and why manufacturers need to reign it in (and I lived in the US until 2 years ago). The prices are ludacris in the US and out of reach for much of the population elsewhere. I'll have to keep my eyes out for the next one, I plan on finally doing a new build this year, despite all the above-mentioned problems, and would love to get another opinion.

    But, the problem if you upgrade to a higher Intel SKU, you're gonna have to use a watercooler and that will factor into the budget, so just upgrading to an i7 from an i5 is not that easy nowadays.

      You can find used RX 580s for less than $100 (at least in the US). It's much better than the GT 640 and will probably work well with the monitor you already have (can't imagine it's that strong since you're coming from an old and weak card).
