I worked for one company that wouldn't hire a grader operator under 40 years old. Of course they did encourage them to retire after they hit their mid 70's, but were good at making exceptions. A couple they stopped paying after they stopped showing up for work, being dead was an accepted excuse. I think the the hardest lessons I ever had to teach new operators, was to stop and think, and slow down.

Not every operator has the eye/hand coordination to be a good blade operator.
      With 2D & 3D grade control...not as long a learning curve.

@@jz1340 When I see Jeff or Chris Guins use a grader, it always worries me that they have so many levers, and that are constantly tweaking them. Jeff demonstrated how he operates the scraper a few years ago, and that looked even more complicated. Blimey. That was five years ago! ua-cam.com/video/iLKpauTxKxI/v-deo.html

"I think the the hardest lessons I ever had to teach new operators, was to stop and think, and slow down." Funny I had an old hand tell me the same thing when I was 18-19 . Once I figured that part out...Oh say five -six years into it and a lot of having to do it again. I guess I was around 23 or 24 I started to become a pretty good blade man. I am 60 now and while I don't operate grader any more for work. When I fire up my old 8T No12 it does not take long to get it back!

My Great Uncle, who ran a grader on the Alaskan highway wouldn't have been nearly as diplomatic as you were in your reply to the whipper snappers Jeff. Grader operators can make or break the profit margin on a highway job. Their little mistakes cause trouble in the road surface for decades on, be it gravel, or paved. One thing I remember him telling me while showing me how a grader worked was "The fewer passes you can make, the less chances you have to have a mistake" He was rather colorful, when the pint in his back pocket get down below half-full so "mistake" wasn't the term he used. What the younger guys forget is the lack of ability is the reason they invented GPS equipment to take up for newer operators lack of skill in the first place.

If a guy can start an old grader with a pony motor, then go out and blue top with a wrist buster, he’s probably a motor grader operator.
I have a hunch that Jeff has done that.

Yeah all the critics are probably those young "experts ". What they dont realise is that we never stop learning no mater how old we get. Us old buggers seem to become invisible to a lot of younger folk these days. They need to respect us for our experience, you dont learn this stuff over night.

Hey Jeff! I have run into the same problem with my local quarry here in CA sometimes. When I order 3/4” road base I’ve had some loads come all fines or all rock. Makes a terrible road when that happens. So I have had to call up and make a stink, which I hate to do. You would think they would figure that out. I think we all would if we were operating the quarry. You are a pretty damn good grader operator Jeff! Love your videos!

I've had an engineer that couldn't figure out how I was doing the grading to build terraces, cuz I didn't have GPS or lasers, I just told her I didn't get drunk the night before and I'm not on dope. I eventually walked her over and showed her I had a slope gauge on the back of my dozer blade. Her comment was she's heard about guys like me. But there aren't any around anymore. For her to check my grades and to check to see what I did cost you $120,000 in survey equipment, and I did it with $150 slope gauge. I can underbid anybody there is, because I didn't spend a fortune trying to draw a straight line.
