🚆 4K Highspeed train cab ride into the Swiss Alps! (Switzerland | ICE (Hamburg -) Zurich - Chur)
- It's been a long time since we've last been to Chur, so let's change that! Welcome aboard yet another Intercity-Express (ICE) of Deutsche Bahn from Zurich to Chur, Switzerlands oldest city. This particular train has left Hamburg in northern Germany early in the morning and made its way to the south of the republic, crossing the border into Basel, Switzerland. A colleague has brought the ICE to Zurich, which is where we start. Only a little over an hour later, the train will have finished the 9+ hour long trip from the sea to the alps. Enjoy the magic sights along the way on the shores of Lake Zurich and Lake Walen further up. Notice how the terrain slowly gets rougher as we are approaching Chur, a city that is located literally in the middle of the alps. You don't believe me? Open up a map of your choice and see for yourself! Now please, sit back and enjoy the ride!
The german ICE serves Switzerland for over 25 years. Today, they connect Hamburg with Chur, Kiel with Zürich and Berlin with Interlaken. The handover between SBB and DB is always in Basel SBB, therefore all ICE's in Switzerland are driven by SBB personnel which are trained on the ICE. It's a partnership between both companies and countries, also to be found on the international lines to Austria (Railjet), France (TGV) and Italy (Astoro/Giruno). The ICE 4 reaches a maximum of 265km/h and therefore qualifies as high-speed train. However the route we are on is limited to 160km/h.
Locomotive/EMU: ICE 4 (BR 412)
Train stops at:
Zurich Main Station
Sargans
Landquart
Chur

Nice trip, awesome to have an office with a view like this!!!
For us spaniards, it's completely unbelievable that a High Speed train runs on conventional lines through small villages of 5000 people or even less with houses 10 metres from the rails!
Our HSR lines are newly built 25 kV lines that run through empty wilderness many km outside any big population, until they reach their destinations. That's why rarely go slower than 250 km/h.
Exactly here in Spain we forget about conventional lines in support for high speed sadly
Had the pleasure of travelling on this route from Basel to Chur back in November 2021, it was a lovely trip.
Particularly nice to see the number of people out for an evening promenade beside the lake.
Actually, Andrei, it was early afternoon. Check the departure time from Zurich HB (station clock at the train head-end).
Such a beautiful country really enjoyed seeing the snow covered mountains.
Greetings from Connecticut USA 🇺🇸

NYC resident who made this trip recently (though not on the ICE 4)
It is even more beautiful to ride into the Alps in person!
A wonderful journey in a beautiful place cheers bob.🦘🐨🐊🦜🦈🕷🍉🍎🍐🍓🍒🥭🍺🍷🤠😁
Gut unterhaltene Gleise ohne Langsamfahrstrecken/Baustellen. Danke für's Video. Gruß aus Franken (Nordbayern).😊
Train to Chur, video is Cool ! 😍
thank you so much! 👍
Wonderful views! It was interesting to see how the train traveled from bare ground, to snow, and back to bare ground. Sun exposure, wind, and elevation, no doubt.
The higher the elevations, you expect snow because of lower temperatures. As you go to lower altitudes, the sun provides radiational heating this it falls as rain.
@@Philip02K Yes, of course.
excellent ride. thanks for taking us along!
Rode that route back in August 2018 on Ice 1. Beautiful. Great job, and thanks for recording and posting this video.👍👍🚂🚂🚂
Beautiful views! I love places with mountains
Fascinating weather, very atmospheric view of the distant cloud-shrouded mountains soon after Thalwil
Thx for the video , I'll watch it tonight .
I'll enjoy it for sure
Thanks for another great trip!
One of the most beautiful scenic railway video's i have seen . The Swiss Alps are just so amazing...Thank you for the video.
I did that trip from Paris, Basel to Chur and then changed in order to go to Samedan in winter. It was a very nice trip.
Love this video. Beautiful country, beautiful weather. All train ride videos have to be watch with the screen in "full screen mode". This makes it seem more like you really are in the engineer's cab and are almost controlling the train yourself. Gotta love it.
Thank you for this video. Nice cab ride, a part never seen. Variable weather, with clouds and sun. After the Kerenzerberg tunnel very nice views over the Walensee, the mountains at left and.beautiful landscapes.Interesting the use for this cab ride of a german ICE 4. Also for the mention of the Churchill train.( at right and entering at Zurich Hbf.). But uaed for restaurant in this station, which dishonor.
Amazing landscapes on this ride
Awesome as always. Thank you for the video
Vielen Dank für die schöne Mitfahrt 😀😀🌞🌞
I did as you suggested and followed the route using Google Maps. Thanks for an enjoyable - and educational - trip!🙂
Magnifique parcours. Merci pour cette vidéo.
Hermosas vistas.
Axel
Nice ride 😃👍
I miss going to Switzerland. I took that route twice in my stay in Zurich in December 2019 (one day going to St Moritz and another day going on the Bernina Express)
Nice trip... Wonderful views!

Bel video!!
excellent video from ICE front window 👍 still slowly driving thru Ziegelbrücke, I don´t understand this station(after refurbishing). Few areas where will be possible drive 160, but not happen....takt is sometimes strange limit. I drove with ICE1 this route Z- Ch and back(when was ICE domestic IC).
great trip! been in Chur from Amsterdam by sleeper (long ago)
The sleepers from Amsterdam to Zurich are back since december!
I will see it with great pleasure
It is sad to feel desensitized to Switzerlands beauty (I regularly have to take trains both on this route and on the lugano zh one). Thank you for the wonderful reminder! I will most definitely try to spend less time on my laptop and more re-enjoying the landscape 💕
Can't wait for these to start showing up with 180/270 or even 360 interactive view. Too many times i catch myself right clicking and try to pan to see something going by. lol
Nice video
I took this ICE 4 from Hamburg last autumn, I did however get off in Mannheim so I didn't get to see this scenery.
You must get to drive some amazing equipment
Super. Aber ganz schöne Schläge auf den Weichenherzen.
Would be nice to see a map at the start of this beautiful route ♥
Yes it has been a while - reckon the last time you took us this way was with the Red Bull Train.
So much is new since then - Twindexx and Traverso are making their mark - it was very refreshing to see the 420 lined up with a tourist extra in Chur.
What with all the unit trains (Giruno as well) coming in, what is the future for re460 and IC2000/2020 stock? Will some of the double-deck vehicles replace EW IV on IR services? How much longer are those vehicles expected to serve?
Thanks so much for sharing your passion with us \m/
They are staying for at least the next 20 years. I don't know what the plans are, but right now, they are the backbone of long distance traffic.
Thank you for the video. This is an "express" train rather than a high speed train. It skips many passenger stations, but its track speed limit is frequently shown to be a slow 90 kph. High speed would be 200 kph and higher. Even the fastest sections only appear to be around 160 kph. In many situations the train is running at the same speed as automotive traffic on the nearby roads, which are not high speed roadways. The alignment appears to be able to except much higher speeds, but they are not implemented.
Even if some parts are comparatively slow on this trip, the train is still considered a high speed train, capable of doing 265km/h.
😊when whe start the ride i see that very old train on the richt,1925?mabey older?amazing to see.👍👍👍👍
1:30 When are we getting a cab-view video from the Churchill?
Wonderful route with a good train! I love your videos. Is it planned that you will make a video in the region of Geneva (Léman Express) or Lucerne (S-Bahn) ?
SIFA!!!!!!
Hello 💜 Now that was a beautiful ride you offered us! I read your caption and I assume that Switzerland and Germany have been cooperating for quite some time on the operation of trains. Do you know how long that cooperation between Switzerland and Germany has taken? I remember when I took the train from Hanover to Turin, and I had to change the train in Basel. Then, after that the train went straight to Turin. It was a particularly beautiful trip, esp crossing the Alps. I read somewhere that the Swiss are the most outdoor people in the world. I don't doubt it at all, the scenery in Switzerland is like straight from heaven. Thanks for filming & showing us this beautiful video. ¡Lo aprecio mucho! Greetings from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria (where we have zero railways lol). All the best to you ❤️ Te mando un abrazo! Hasta luego! 👋
If I'm not mistaken it's about 30 years now that the ICE runs in Switzerland.
I noticed from one of your answers that tilting trains are not allocated to this route. Having just watched your previous video (from Rorschacht) that's a shame. It would make for an even more interesting ride.
Beannachdan bho Alba.
What is it that the train is calling out repeatedly, like at 46:58 ? What does it mean?
1:33 Those red EMUs are still in service? Only ever saw them in computer games before.
Great View from the Cab, it would be great if we could see the speed of the train ?
Nice! What was the journey number of this train?
Nice train on the right at 01:33
What is the alert not sure the spelling but sounds like "zee pha" or "z fa"?
👍👍👍
Are there any plans to duplicate the short single track section between Mühlehorn and Murg? That short tunnel must be a bottleneck during busy periods.
Plans probably yes, but as you might have seen there's no easy way to put another track in that very narrow section. It works fine and rarely causes problems, but it is the weakest link in the chain.
Fun fact, it is the only single track section between Hamburg and Chur.
I love your video's and your descriptions and your presentations. They give me many hours of enjoyment as I am so far from your beautiful, handsome and wonderful nation. However, my German is very basic and when I see the word "Doors Closing" I'm pleased and when I look at a translator and I see the words "Türen schließen" which is not remotely close to the announcement we hear, then I become confused. I also hear many other announcements from the cab - BRAVO ! For we non German speakers or those who are really struggling to learn. Can you make a dictionary of the phrases when hear announced in the cab? I realise and appreciate that I may be asking for a lot of work from you, but, it would really enhance our enjoyment of the truly magnificent videos.
I can foresee you throwing your hands in the air and asking yourself "What else do these people want!"
😘 It's only a request, not a demand 😘 if a dictionary is not possible then it's fine by me. Thanks for your consideration. Maybe someone else will be kind-hearted enough to try.
I'm a long way from Europe in a large Island nation with no railways (Papua New Guinea) and your efforts are really appreciated.
It's the only train that talks in these cab rides, so it's quite simple. "Schliessvorgang eingeleitet" (doors closing), "SIFA" (vigilance system) and sometimes "Störung" (disturbance or malfunction), that's it already.
@@RailwayEmotions Thank you - you have improved my German language knowledge - slightly. 😎
@@grahamnancledra7036 To be fair that's not normal German language, as people use it when they talk to each other. Train messages often are more cryptic, "Schließvorgang eingeleitet" means "closing process initiated". Now that I've translated it, it kinda sounds like it could be from a spaceship in Star Trek or something :D
Thanks @Railway Emotions for yet another great video. What is that interesting red train b/w 1:20 and 1:35, just as you leave Zurich?
I am curious about that one too!
It's Churchill train
It's this one: www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/ideas/offer.html/tagesausflug/roter-doppelpfeil-churchill
For more Details see de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBB_RAe_4/8_1021
Unfortunately the page is only available in German.
Churchill is the right answer. It can be booked for private trips and is sometimes used as a public pop up restaurant in Zurich Main Station
What happened to track joint sound ?
Are the numbers on the sporadic signs on the left of the track the speed limits for the next section of track, the above number for non tilting trains and the number below for tilting trains?
Those signs are just valid for the next curve(s), not the entire next section. All other speeds are only visible on our internal charts. The lower number is for trains with lower brake percentage, think cargo trains, the higher number is usually for regular passenger trains. Tilting trains have the same signs with a round shape and an orange or green ring around them, there are none on this route. They are much faster, for example 130 km/h in a curve that is otherwise 90/95 km/h.
@@RailwayEmotions I guess my assumption was way off :)
Thanks for the clarification!
When was that?
👍👍🎥👍👍
At Lachen station, you must laugh!
Goodness, a double Giruno8:30? That's 22 coaches, isn't it?
But the Giruno has very Short Coaches
