I'll never forget this one, and I didn't even see it. September 24, 1989. Got married the day before. Had planned honeymoon in Jamaica, but Hurricane Hugo destroyed it and had made a beeline toward NJ/Philadelphia. Changed the honeymoon to Quebec City and drove, listening to the game on the radio. It was a picture-perfect cloudless day. The calm after the storm. Eagles pounded Montana all day and led by 11 in the 4th quarter when I lost the signal in the Adirondacks. Hours later, after checking onto the hotel, I immediately turned on TSN, Canada's ESPN, to see the carnage I missed. Couldn't believe the Eagles lost by 14. Damn you, Joe Montana! Still married, though.
NFL Films does a piss poor job of explaining this game. Entering the 4th period, the Eagles led 18-10, then kicked a FG to make it 21-10. *Montana* hit *Taylor* for 70 and it was 21-17, but the Eagles went right down and scored again, making it 28-17. Then *Joe Montana* got hot. Three more TD passes and a 38-28 win. On a side note, *Montana* became only the SECOND QB in NFL history to throw 4 4th quarter TD passes. The first was *Kenny 'Snake' Stabler* who did it in 1980 as an Oiler playing at the Jets.
I was at this game. My best friend is an attorney and his firm had a luxury box, you could have heard a pin drop after Montana took that game over. But I was secretly rooting for SF, I was quietly happy!
JT did that the entire year. After catching a 5 yard look-in pass he would dodge the primary tackler and romp 90 yards for a TD. He did that twice against the Rams in one game that year. Also, he ran back punts the same way. It was his best year as a 49er receiver overall but he also did catch the winning Super Bowl touchdown in the previous year against the Cincinnati Bengals with 34 seconds left in the game.
This was the #1 game for me because there were some HOFamers on that D-line with one of the best D coaches in history and they were WRECKING offenses. There are two GOATS at QB, one before the passing rule changes and one after. What makes Joe the true GOAT is that even with a pass rush all over him, he was mobile enough to move around to buy time, to throw on the run, or to just run for the first down if they needed to. He survived some beatings but still found a way to win. The closest QB to Joe throwing on the run with pinpoint accuracy is Aaron Rodgers. Back then, the two sacks he got hurt on and shortened his career would both be late hits and roughing the passer together combined. Who knows how many more Super Bowls he would have won with today's passing league rules.

This Montana game reminded me a lot of the Houston Oiler game. Houston's Buddy Ryan blitz defense was KILLING Joe Montana, and the offensive line of the Chiefs just like they were killing the offensive line of the Niners at the time. But once the Chiefs, and Niners made adjustments in the game, and figured the blitz out, Montana had the Eagles and Oilers right where they wanted them. Both offenses spread the defenses out, and suddently the receivers were open. The Blitzes were picked up, and so on.

Moonlight Tiger tom Brady 😊
wow
lol at Eagles being team of any decade
At 347 that guy in the eagles hat looks like Aaron Rogers. Or is it just me. Let me know if anyone else sees that.
If Niners would have had a power run offensive line they would have won every game by 30points
At the time There was an idea that Randall Cunningham was about to Usher in a New Era of "The Running Quarterback." Not on Joe's watch.
This could have been a much better video if they got comments from more players instead of just Brent Jones. I really didn't want to hear from the so called "analysts". Talk with the PLAYERS! Oh yeah, and they don't even give the scores!
Everyone: Great game, Montana was great, etc.
Me: Why were the 49ers wearing their home uniforms in Philadelphia?
It was 12-10 at halftime...
I wonder if Tom Terrific can win after a game like this
Tom cant handle a pass rush like this. In todays game they cant hit you without a flag plus your receivers cant be hit today either. So under these conditions i dont think tom could do this as consistantly than joe.
"Is this the team of the 80's against the team of the 90's?"
Nope.
My 2 favorite teams
Joe Montana is 4-0 in the Super Bowl he’s the greatest of all time not Tom Brady
love how they never mentioned the deficit. they were only down by 11.
49ers fans live in the past. Go Birds!!!!
Too much talk and not enough football
We may have another Great like Joe Montana in Jimmi Garappolo judging by what we have seen from him in some of the most incredible games against the NFL's top teams especially last year! I swear that I can see some of Joe's pose in the pocket and toughness in this guy, his pin point passing and ball handling are stellar and I expect some great 49er teams the next couple of years if Jimmi can stay healthy. Go Niners!
