- This video shows how to take apart and service an older "B" version of the Shimano Curado 200 bait caster fishing reel. I understand this reel was made in the late 1990's and early 2000's.
I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe. Questions? Comments? I reply to all. Thank you for viewing - Dennis

Thanks, pulled one of these out of a garbage can while walking my dogs a few years ago. Recently opened it up, cleaned it out a little grease and oil per these instructions now one of my favorite casting reels.
Glad I could help now you have a story to tell too! Best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
Great video. Have several of these from back in the day. They just keep going. Great reels if you take care of them. 👍
Yes they are great when maintained. Thanks for the note - Dennis
Another great video.
Thank you Robert - please stay tuned for more to come - Dennis
Hey Dennis quick question for ya! I have a Castaic 201sf and it seems very similar to this reel build wise. When I turn the handle fast and then stop suddenly and almost try to reel in reverse the reel makes this weird loud almost clicking sound. It also happens randomly sometimes when I try to cast, loud clicking, spool dramatically slows down, even had a bait break off. I’ve been working on it for weeks and can’t figure it out. I was thinking the anti reverse bearing maybe? I ordered one, but I’m not sure. Pinion gear also has a lot of side to side play in it was wondering if the spool was slipping out of that or the yoke, or if the gears were slipping…? I’m so lost 🤦🏻♂️😂 If you have any thoughts I’d really really appreciate it. Thanks so much. Really appreciate your vids! 🤙🏽
I think you have a problem that is not a problem. This happens on the Penn 975 series as well. The cause is most likely that the spool brakes are not braking fast enough and that is because of the way you are testing. They were not designed to hold that level of force. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Interesting. All my other reels don’t do that at all, but obviously this one is way older. Not even that much force either just reeling fast and stop. And it clicks for an extra second or two. But wonder why would it happen when trying to cast? That’s just a normal function the reel should handle 🤷🏻♂️ It also happens when I just reel forward fast. Also it only happens with the spool in, and it’s worse with the less spool tension I have on. Just to give you more clues haha maybe I’ll try and email you a video clip of it so you can hear it! I really don’t want to give up on the reel, when it works correctly it casts so far! 🤦🏻♂️😂
Olá! Sou fascinado por esta carretilha! Tenho duas delas ! Adquiri agora a pouco tempo ótimo estado! Queria saber sobre a chronarch 100 ! A diferença e cuidados! Obrigado
I know this is a older video but is very helpful. The reel you are working on is the B Model. The A Model has a flipping switch and take down screws & regular screws. It doesn't have the easy acces to the spool like yours in the video. The take down screws I belive are to remove the left side of the reel to acces the spool ? My concern is the flipping lever . Should I leave the lever switch attached . Or should I remove the lever Switch before I separate the case half ? I would appreciate any thoughts on this model .
If the flipping lever is an arm on the side plate near the spool adjuster, then you need to remove it in order to not disturb the cam and spring during removal. If you left it attached, it would pill those parts off of the inner gear assembly and make a mess. You can safely remove the case once the flipper arm is detached. It will still be helpful to make sure the cam is not stuck in the case, so remove the case slowly, and if you like, use a screwdriver to hold the flip came down, while you pull up on the case - Dennis
@laslider you are absolutely right! But the main difference in my opinion is the magnetic brake of the A-Series (as seen in the schematic) and the centrifugal brake of the B-Series (the then new VBS system - as seen when Dennis opens the palmside). The B-Series was introduced sometime in the mid 90th and was listed in the European catalog even in 2004.
Thanks guys - I rarely work on bait casters and you are helping me learn the back story on this reel. I will update the description to the later version - Dennis
What screw driver did you use to take the handle off to get to the 10mm nut? Just picked up the reel and a fenwick golden wing rods gw 76ch-t pole for 20 bucks.
That's quite a deal. The Fenwick rod is easily worth the price paid. I used a #1 Phillips head screwdriver to take the cap off - Dennis
I have a CU-100B and it is missing 2 of the pins for the brake system what do you think the odds are that i will be able to get new ones for it
Go make them. Find a coffee stir straw or the plastic tube from a spray can like WD40 and pick one that fits snug. All you need to do then it to trim it to size. The odds are good that it will work fine - Dennis

Hello I have 2 very similar reels to this the only difference is they're the Bantam Citica CI-200's they have a bearing or 2 less than the curado. Instead having bushings in certain places on the spool. How would you go about lubricating those? With my other reels I can just give them a drop of oil but I'm not sure on these. Thanks!
Once you remove the non-gear side plate, you can remove the spool and oil the bearings or bushings - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I knew how to do that I just wasn't sure what to actually oil on the bushing haha. Since it's just a round piece of plastic basically. And thanks for the reply!
Yeah. Plastic is a petrochemical and you don't need to do anything with it, which is probably why the manufacturer chose it. You can put grease on it as it won't clog anything and will last longer than oil - Dennis
I believe the correct schematic for this reel is dated 1994. It's confusing because it is titled with a 200B.
Thanks for the info. Lie a lot of folks, time flies and I lose track in dating some reels -Best wishes - Dennis
I got a cu 200 for a 12 pack of beer. It is jn good shape but plan on taking the clicking star system off jt to fix a citica E I have. The cu is a solid feeling reel but kinda dated now in the baitcaster category.
Sounds like that was a good trade. The reel may be dated, but it is still a good reel capable of catching a lot of fish. Good luck with the swap - Dennis
where’d you get the pawl and pawl cap from?
Check Southwesternparts.co or ereplacementparts.com
@@2ndChanceTackle the pawl cap was discontinued, i ordered BNT1239 instead. i have a cu201b5, would it still fit?
I need to build a shimano Brush Buster 11 by Flipping, but I can't find a manual, could you help me please?
Edgar - The best I can do is provide a link for the schematic. You can find it here. www.reelschematic.com/wp-content/uploads/schematics/Shimano/Brushbuster/SHIMANO%20BRUSH%20BUSTER%2010%20PLUS%20FLIPPIN%2887-155%29.pdf
Best wishes

Last week i dropd my curado 201 in fresh water should i take it apart or just oil it?
If you have fishing to do, put the reel in a clean bucket filled with fresh tap water and let is sit overnight, You can then oil it. If you are hearing any noises or the reel is sluggish, then you should take it apart and do a full cleaning and re-lube. You did not say how long it was in. A quick dip, - oK. It it hit the muddy bottom and came up ugly, best to go with the preventative full cleaning right away - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle it was in the river for about 30 secs
Just soak the reel in fresh clean water overnight and lube it. You should be fine. If you hear a grind or anything then you will need to take it apart - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks
That reel looks way newer than a early 90s Curado. More like a 2003-2007 Bantam Curado CU-200B or Curado CU-200 B5. Great reels either way.
Could be. I lose track of time! They are great reels and I still fish with them. - Dennis
Just fyi for anyone who has the Left Handed version of this reel, the threaded part for the handle is reverse threaded.
Thanks for the note and tip to viewers - I alway get confused when working on the lefties. I guess I am right brained! Dennis
How can i contact you about redoing a shimano bantam black magnum bkm 2000 2 speed reel. It was given 2 me but not sure what it needs
Please send me an email to 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com thank you for asking - Dennis
I dont get how the plastic gears ?? after so many years LoI
not broke down …..
Plastic gears have more give and flexibility than metal ones and they actually work better on level wind reels than the metal ones, they are smoother and their track record is very good. - Dennis
Even in the high end reels the Idle gears have been made out of plastic for years and they never break, the line guide does not create enough friction to do any damage.
@@baseballgod8065 well that is fucking smart wow , I have used only spinning reels , but I never saw any plastic gear inside so fore me it sounds fucking crazy LoI , I have got my first levelwind not long time ago the ambasador c3 4600 just to get more range in jigging ,many ppls have scared me when I have told them that I want to use line 0.19 strike pro , they told me to put not less then 0.32 , but even with first use I have no beard nest , sorry fore my English

Do a Shimano Citica CI-200
Red - I did a Citica a few months ago. I am not sure which version, but it may help you. You can watch the video here ua-cam.com/video/ikTgxwOed4o/v-deo.html. Dennis
I bet you'd make a killer locksmith
Now there is a thought! Thanks for watching - Dennis
wow it looks like new LoI he used that reel ?? maybe used it once at a year ?? xDD
Not sure, the viewer that sent this in said it was passed down to him and that it had not beed fished in a while. It is in nice condition for a 25 year old reel
I have 3 of various ages, all work great, longest lasting reels ever made. I bet it got fished plenty.
its NOT 1992 its 2003 smarty
I stand corrected! I judge the age of the reel by the case style on many of these. I have a resource that shows when a lot of reels were made, bu the dating on the various Shimano reels is hard to find....so 2003 it is! Thank you - Dennis
