Run the damned belt until it breaks! Saw the damned logs and let the planer do the finish like in the real world! Don't calibrate the damned mill every 45 minutes! It is a roughsawn mill.

Watching you two makes me tired. But I do remember the days when I could burn through some 10 or 14 hours of steady working and sleep the sleep of the honest tired. Still, it all looks much better watching you two do it than the memories I have from back then. Thanks for sharing it all with us.

Jessie, you're not alone. My biggest gripe with products made today is that they are not user/owner serviceable. Everything is intended to be disposable or so proprietary that there is little hope of servicing it yourself.

Dude, the easy pour spout is not made for you to pick up the can by, no wonder it popped out. Hold your finger over the end and bend it down toward the tank and hold the weight of the can with your other hand, works like a charm.

The gas can struggle is real.. I like the vent idea. After dumping gas all in the front of my new wave runner, I now use a big funnel and pour slowly. It’s still faster than the ventless cans! Love your vids!

Allyssa (sp?),, Warning, danger !!! When you guided the log into place, you stepped to within the 'ladder' of the saw bed. That is a never. Do not step within the spaces of the mill bed when moving a log into place or a beam out. Never.
The mass involved. If the log swings or the backhoe causes a fore and aft motion,, at a minimum you will break a leg. The deceptive part is that the wood is moving slowly,, and actually is easy to counter balance and move around. None of that accounts for the mass of the object. The ladder of the mill bed vs a shear or scissors against the moving log,,, do a lot of damage, leg, bruise, knee,,,, never step into those spaces. Hammer and anvil and you are the bug. Make him stop for a moment, walk around to the other side. Never get between..
And,,, if you break your leg,,, I can pretty much guarantee the the mill bed will have to be re-leveled (again) as well.

Have you thought about getting a pair of empty oil drums and filling one with diesel, and another with gas? You can buy hand crank drum pumps that let you control flow pretty well, and it is much cleaner and far more simple than a gas can. Rotary pumps can range from $50 (Home Depot types) or up to $200. The $120-$150 range is best quality for price, and a pair of empty barrels from a store is $150-$200.

I recently purchased two Surecan gas cans and absolutely love them. I love them so much that I gave my old ones away. Got my dad to buy one as well...he loves it too! The cost of the Surecan is nothing compared to the headache I had messing around with the cans similar to yours.

I know you'll never read this in real time but you need to set your blade guides much closer the work because the blade will pitch as it warms up. I think this would account for your fussy little problems. It has nothing to do with the bed. I also don't think that you should be so concerned with the perfection when all these timbers are going to shrink and expand and shake and move over the next 1000 years... geez. Good luck, Please GET REAL !!!

For small equipment, like your generator, use a jiggle siphon from a big can. Easy to control, you don't have wrestle with a can at all. It is a siphon, so it has to be above the item you are refueling. I can usually fill my small 2 cycle equipment from one of those 1 gallon "approved" cans with almost no spilling.
For large equipment, like the back hoe, buy some 𝐕𝐏 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐉𝐮𝐠𝐬. Not cheap, but they will solve your problem ! They do come in yellow. Get the square ones. They hold 5+ gallons and have a vent. 𝑴𝑨𝑲𝑬 𝒀𝑶𝑼𝑹 𝑶𝑾𝑵 𝑭𝑳𝑬𝑿𝑰𝑩𝑳𝑬 𝑺𝑷𝑶𝑼𝑻 ! The cap has a removable bung, thread 3/4" FIP. Buy a brass 3/4" MIP to hose barb adapter, a hose clamp and enough 3/4" clear vinyl hose so that it can reach down to the neck of what you are filling as you tilt the can (𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑦 3'-4'). If you want to get fancy, plumb in a 1/4 turn shutoff. This how I fill my boat gas tank (15+ 𝑔𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑠) and I never spill a drop !

You will love this bit of advice: On my 580CK backhoe, I just sit the 5 gallon diesel can on top, then unscrew the big can spout and remove it. Then just use a "jiggler" to transfer the diesel fuel in the can to the fuel tank. Only takes a few seconds to get the fuel flowing, and then she fills up FAST.......empty the 5 gallon can in less than a minute, and no spilling, and you are not bent over holding the 50 lb can and spilling fuel as it pours. Best way I found other than a hand crank diesel pump on a larger storage tank.

  • @Arami76
    @Arami76 6 років тому +8

Why not get a tank with a pump? Either electric or hand pump. That way you can meter what you need to whatever machine you need to fill.

I needed three vents. Ordered a set of five from Amazon. Package came with seven vents. No instructions came with the caps. Use a half inch drill to make the hole. I drilled mine on the top right side where the vent should be, and avoided the seam. Once installed I put the can in direct sunlight to see if the would handle the pressure increase due to expansion. Worked like a champ with no issues.

I might make a suggestion .. With all the firewood you created .. If you move it up the hill near you water tanks .. It gets out of the way and a chance to dry out .. Since you already stated you had enough firewood.. Then you have a good start on next years supply ..And all the extra lumber you created and store on the hill as well and now you have lumber for a shed ..

  • @timgerk3262

Craig Lee you may be right in part, but the spring-loaded self-sealing nozzles and lack of vent for pouring started with California Air Resources Board (CARB). The point was to prevent evaporating gas in all these storage cans from contributing to smog, where it’s been largely successful. Jesse hit it perfectly when he pointed out that the nozzles are absolute enraging crap when it comes to dispensing the gas, which sprays, slops, and spills everywhere, not to mention all the plastics, springs and gaskets are degraded and worthless within a year. The yellow plastic vents (which are contraband in CA) are good start, free pouring with a funnel is working for me for generators with the gas port on top; for car/truck with gas fill on the side life still sucks.

Take 6-10 of your so called live edge slabs of wood, stack them on edge and clamp them down. Make a cut so all bark is off on the one side. Flip them over and cut all 6-10 slabs to the same width. Such as all 2X6, 2X8, 2X10. Then you will have them all set to the same size for all 6-10 boards. That will chew through your slabs pretty quickly and give you usable lumber as needed. I know your working on timber framing, so you can go back to that pile after you have your house built. It shouldn't hurt the lumber too much if you keep it covered with a tarp to keep the elements off of it. Good luck, your getting there. Keep on keepin on.

Racing fuel gas cans work great! You can also get the plastic racing fuel cells and just attach a long tube with a ball valve on the end to gravity feed with very accurate control from the ball valve. You could even install a cheap fuel pump hooked up to a spare 12v battery for easy pumping! There are lots of high quality and cheap solutions to those crappy red cans.

They make a great spout I see at most small equipment stores...can't remember the name - I have a 2.5 gal and a 5 gallon. works great especially for filling chain saw. Yo you can order heavier duty struts for that topper door! They'll last way longer. Might have to change where they mount on the truck end but it's totally doable! Mini series!

Wow, some real information to make my life easier. Had no idea one could buy those gas can vents. I am sure you can you can understand my frustration with my 83 van with the, It Quits Running (IQR), fuel gauge. Sorta like my first motorcycle where you flip a valve for reserve when the IQR fuel gauge tells you need more fuel. The only difference being a two gallon plastic gas can. As your experience highlights it would not have be all that bad of an except for the EPA filler and no vent. (Not so bad if you were planning to show up 20 minutes late smelling like gas anyway.) Again thanks for putting all that energy into locating those gas can vents. It really will improve my situation in that I will be able to put off dropping the tank, putting in a second $130 fuel level sender tell junking time. Again thanks.

Just don't buy the one's in the link which were like 5 for $7.00. You can get packs of 20 for less than $10.

Friend of mine bought two side tanks for a simi truck bout 50 gallons each one for diesel and other for gas . He buys his fuel at the farm supply with no road tax . we rigged hoses with a hand valve off of old gas pumps works great . He built the tower rack to hold em up out of pipe and angel iron . But you could build from timber and would work well .

Since you asked about a good piece of equipment that rarely breaks down and what happens when it does, well here it is. A Dillon Precision ammo reloading machine. If it ever does break just call Dillon and they will send you a new part free or you can send the machine back to them and they will fix it free for life with their no B.S. warranty.

I use NATO jerry cans for most stuff, if I need more finesse I use a VP plastic fuel jug with the long pour spout or a small one gallon can for small engine stuff

When I got a 30 horse tractor, I quickly found the best option was a large funnel with a backsplash, you just remove the spout and fill it up quick. But I will be purchasing some of these vents for small cans I use for chainsaw.

might be worth looking into some sort of transfer tank for the truck, both a gas and diesel setup, then you can keep a good amount of fuel on hand and easily to dispense

Put the thick slabs off to the side & resaw them later ! You need to make a slab rack ,don't handle them twice . When you take the slabs off the mill ,put the slabs in the rack , when the rack is full cut the slabs & stack them . That saves one step !

If you read this, invest in inexpensive festoon lighting in the garage. Basically a temporary string of lights with baskets to protect the bulbs.

Wow... I could see how the comments would get annoying. Everyone has their two cents to add as well as some rude comments from the people that only talk down to people when they are behind a keyboard. Get over it guys. This is their channel. They do what they want with it and if you don't like it, then skip the parts or maybe even don't watch it. They are new to this. Nobody ever said they were professionals. They have their people that they go to for advice. But enough with the, "you did it wrong", or the, "you should have". Come on guys... You are not the only one that watches this channel. Like the comment that stated that he talks to much. Some people like that he explains everything. He is also a person. He wants to complain or have a rough day, he can vent however much he wants. Jeeze. My vent is now over.

well i use vehicle valve stems for vents, you can regulate the air in that way. Took off the epa junk and hose clamped a hose on them, no E-z pour. With that much firewood that your getting, most of it should be seasoned by the time you use it. thats a positive on that.

A chipper shredder might be nice for the trash (bark/scrap) segments, that way you can get re-use as garden filler next year?

I use a funnel. And use the gas can with the pouring spout on top. You have better control on the flow rate.

The upside is that by the time you get around to using the firewood it will have dried enough to burn well.
