    I didn't think I would like the lane keeping assistance on the model Y I now having tried it and given up on the MG4 but having used it on the model Y over the last 3 weeks I can honestly say I wouldn't drive another car long distance without it, it's just amazing how much it can de-stress your drive

    Like you Dave I have found myself using the basic Tesla Autopilot as much as I can and it has made long trips an absolute breeze. Biggest danger to point out of adaptive cruuise control is that if you follow a car to a stop at a roundabout, if you haven't cancelled it, then the Tesla will go ahead.
    All of the technology is a great thing to have but it is very good to understand it's strengths and weaknesses, to keep you safe.

      Weird, whenever I use Tesla AP it slows down for roundabouts and then proceeds. I only have to take over if someone is on the roundabout. But 9/10 times at night, it can drive itself across no problem

    Great to see so much innovation in cars. For us, we do use CC a lot, but only when on the highways.
    But 95% of our driving is small country roads. So much of those features will never be used by us.

    I have a Tesla model 3 . I stopped using the autopilot because I found the ghost braking too unnerving There was one spot on a local dual carriageway where it braked hard every time I drove past it. I could see absolutely no reason for the braking and thought "what if another vehicle was close behind me, would they be able to react in time?". Too scary for me.

    Just getting yet another free over the air update on our 2 year old model YLR ! nice to get a 'new' car every few weeks !!!!. Its also got auto pilot which is great for changing lanes on the motorways, it presents a 'lozenge' in the vacant lane then all I have to do is indicate and the car moves over, nice and safe.

    Our Stellantis group 'Lane Keep Assist' will try to vigorously force you into the opposite carriageway in the narrow country roads that often have white lines down the side in darkest Surrey. This can be quite scary if you have forgotten to turn it off.

    Impressed by the real time reboot. But you should ditch your phone. My iPhone hasn’t needed a reboot between upgrades. PS Adaptive cruise control that is based on radar cannot distinguish between a stationary vehicle and other stationary objects like bridges. If you crest a hill and a stationary vehicle comes into view in your lane then radar based adaptive cruise control will not slow down! Also, you should keep you hands on the wheel in case lane keeping switches off. You’ll be aware of this through steering feel should you miss warning lights ( or if, like Toyota, there is no warning light).

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Місяць тому

      Yes, when I am not filming and demonstrating it I do keep my hands on the wheel. And mine does know the difference between bridges and stationary vehicles; it has learned. At one point on M61 it always phantom braked going under one specific bridge and I over-rode it. Gradually it reduced braking effort at that point until now it no longer phantom brakes at all. Technology! learns faster then me at my age.

    Interesting video Dave. I drive a non Tesla and use many of the features you describe. One feature you don’t talk about is speed limiter. I use speed limiter as much as smart cruise control if not more. I don’t have to keep an eye on the speed of my car, if the car in front of me drives over the limit my car will stay in the parameters. The car tells me when the limit changes. As I lift my foot off the accelerator pedal the car slows through regen. If I need to accelerate quickly to avoid something you just put your foot to the floor to override the limiter, though I can’t remember ever needing do this.
    I have heard Tesla don’t have this feature, is this still the case?

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Місяць тому

      It is the case on my Model S no speed limiter as such although I can set cruise control to be a different figure i.e. when I select 30 mph or 70mph it will override to say 28mph 32mph and 72 or 75mph every time

    I own a 2021 Model 3 which has ‘Autopilot’. I live in France. Autopilot is worse than a neurotic learner. So I have to disable Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping and Auto Emergency Braking before EVERY drive otherwise the car steers and brakes for no reason which makes it less safe than when I drive it.

    @karlwest437 Місяць тому

    I've always thought it a bit silly that if the self driving thinks you're not paying attention, it'll disengage, that seems like the last thing it should do! I'd rather it play continuous annoying beeping and maybe change lanes to pull over, until the driver wakes up

    • @davetakesiton

      No dafter than the original Ford Mach-E system, Karl, a camera eye system, if you are not watching the road it displays a visual warning on the display that it is going to engage. No audible at all. I hope it has improved since.

    Mr “Just get a Tesla” has informed us that EU or UK legislation specifies a limit on auto-steer systems. Auto-steer on motorways is fine but you may hit this limit on twisty roads. He claims that Teslas slow down when auto-steer approaches this limit. I’d like a second opinion on that!

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube Місяць тому

      I try mine everywhere and it works everywhere that it is able to be activated. On motorways and major A roads it is great and reliable. If it cannot self steer, the icon disappears so I cannot select it. If already activated, No my Tesla does not slow down, it displays a very bright red flashing warning and pings and dings very loudly indeed deactivating!!! You cannot miss it.

    I owned various Mercedes, BMW and Audi models from the 1990s with cruise control and adaptive cruise controls were common on anything above the C-Class in the last 15 years. An adaptive cruise control should primarily adjust to other vehicles to avoid a collision, rather than to control what speed I do according to any speed or other signs, provided that the cameras pick up the image and no truck or weather conditions obstruct it.
    I don’t see what these vehicles offer that would be safe, convenient, refined and reliable.
    Any accident that involves lane assist and features where the driver passed in control to the vehicle should be shared liability, even if the Tesla driver may not be at fault, just like it is with doing high speed on the autobahn.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Місяць тому

      So why are most ICE cars equipped with adaptive cruise control AND a speed limiter designed specifically to control your speed????

    • @ComeJesusChrist
      @ComeJesusChrist Місяць тому

      @@davetakesitonYou can operate the speed limiter separately and easily adjust it if you choose to do so. Personally, I’ve been using the cruise control only on my 2013 E-Class estate, on the old SLK and on every single one of my C-Class and not a single one forced the speed limiter function on me, so if you want to use the cruise control, you just use the cruise control. No software update could enforce any speed limit on any of my current or previous cars. These carmakers trust me that I could make my own decisions and I could control my own behaviour, which is fine after driving for quarter of a century in this country without acquiring a single point on my licence.
