  • In this episode of Riichi Mahjong Guide, I play through a hanchan on Kemono Mahjong, an app for Android and iOS.
    Kemono Mahjong is a riichi mahjong app that has several beginner-friendly features, including an easily-accessible yaku list and an optional furiten indicator. It uses a vertical layout designed for phones, and follows the EMA ruleset. It's an excellent app that I would recommend to newer players.

    As for how I played through the hanchan, I felt like I may have gone a little too fast, so don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.

    Something to note for people who might be bothered by it, there's a setting to disable the characters commenting and taunting when you take too long. I use AI games to take my time and practice thinking about defense with no real people waiting on me, so it's nice to be able to turn it off.
    I believe this game also has networked multiplayer in development right now, so that's another thing to look forward to

    I know you haven't put up any vids in a while, but I just want you to know how helpful your vids are especially these that you explain your decisions in. Thanks for the hard work!

    Thanks for being a cool guy, former duelist known as LightGrunty. I remember reading your YGO blog a ton a decade ago and it's really neat to rediscover you here in a different context. Hope you're doing well!

    Hi!
    I've been wondering this:
    There is this 3 and a half hour video on riichi mahjong. I really want my friends to watch it to play mahjong with me, but they are too lazy to watch the full video. Do you have enough videos on your channel, so my friends can learn enough to play a hanchan with me? (And also your vids are great, keep going!)

    • @LightGrunty

      Thanks! And yes, the videos on this channel cover everything you would need to know to play riichi mahjong, including the basics of mahjong, yaku and scoring, and some basic strategies for new players. This video was the last video I made, and there are no more videos planned.
      When I first started, I also struggled to get through that 3+ hour video, so I understand how difficult it might be for your friends to sit down and watch it in its entirety. That's part of the reason why I made this series, to provide a more beginner-friendly video guide for new players.

    Been learning and playing this app. I have a question around the 7 min mark a hand had finished and it’s giving the score. Under hand score it says counter score. What is that from. I think i missed it. I love your videos. I’ve watched some multiple times. Thank you.

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  4 роки тому +1

      The "counter score" is the added points from the honba. There was 1 honba, so 300 points were added to the value of the hand.

    I know that there is another view in the game where you can see the table but I have forgotten how to switch

      If you're playing on mobile, I think all you have to do is rotate your device. On PC, it probably depends on the dimensions of the window, though I'm not entirely sure.

    This is a nice app, thanks for the recommendation.
    4:08 if you would have played that a bit differently, you could have had a kokushi! :) I know starting with 8 isn't a great start, but you could have flirted with the idea.

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  5 років тому

      I don't really look for kokushi if I start with less than ten different terminals or honors, unless I'm really desperate. But, it depends on the rule set, of course.

    Have you tried playing on Mahjong Soul?

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  Рік тому +1

      I do know about Mahjong Soul, though it was not released at the time I was making this video series.
      While Mahjong Soul has definitely helped spread riichi mahjong in English-speaking communities, I personally find it hard to recommend due to the gacha mechanics and questionable artwork it features.

    TELL US ABOUT wind tiles like if u get a certain wind tile in ur hand, which wind tile is useless with respect to the wind tile which we get....about all wind tiles and everything

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  4 роки тому +1

      Assuming you have one of each, it's usually better to keep wind tiles that would be yakuhai for you over the ones that would not provide you yaku. However, if you are aiming for pinfu, then the opposite is true, since yakuhai cannot be used in pinfu at all.

    How can you call riichi?

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  3 роки тому

      You need to have a closed tenpai hand to be able to declare riichi. That means no calling chii, pon, or kan (unless it's a closed kan).

    Hey, the app is not free , pal!
    Just try "Mahjong soul"!!

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  4 роки тому +3

      Yes, this app costs a few dollars, but it gets regular additions, including online play and new characters. Mahjong Soul did not exist when I made this series of videos, and it also has a time limit, which could be intimidating to new players.

    How is this a guide? You’re not teaching me anything and I’ve gone through the games tutorial twice now. Can’t win a game.

      This video by itself is not a guide. It is the final video in the Riichi Mahjong Guide series which brings together all of the lessons from before though some example gameplay on a beginner-friendly mahjong app. I would recommend starting from the beginning of this series. Here is a link to the first playlist, going over the basics of riichi mahjong:
