  • In this episode of Riichi Mahjong Guide, we cover three relatively rare yaku that revolve around terminals and honors: chanta, junchan, and honroutou. These are not very common yaku, but you should still keep them in mind, just in case.

A friend explained to me that she had a hand containing a one or nine in sets, with no honors, and wanted to claim both a Chanta and Junchan hand. My opinion is that she can only claim a Junchan hand?

That is correct, chanta and junchan cannot be scored together. One of the requirements for chanta is that at least one of its sets contains honor tiles.

Hang on, did her hand contain anything aside of terminals (i.e., 1s and 9s)? If it didn't, she's not eligible for either junchan or chanta, she's got to file a chinroutou claim!

If you get tsumo do you need to call it?

If you draw a tile that would complete your hand, you have the option to turn it down, if that's what you're asking. Instead of declaring tsumo, you could just discard a tile, but then you would end up in furiten.
Usually you wouldn't turn down a tsumo. If you don't have yaku, then of course you don't have any other choice but to discard a tile and end up in furiten. I've also passed up on a tsumo multiple times when I wanted to make my hand more expensive.

Junchan and chanta are mutually exclusive yaku. A hand cannot be scored as both.
