I love how the pianist picked up on Dimebag’s willingness to hold notes. I remember reading an interview where he talked about holding notes and how he wanted more guitarists to do that. I love it. It means Dime’s intention landed.
100%! We all know Dime could Shred with the best, but when he played with soul it gives you goosebumps (like this solo and the sleep solo). David Gilmour and his solo in Comfortably numb is another good example of holding/bending notes, where no notes are wasted.
@@adamregan4921 I love that you mentioned the solo in The Sleep. One of the greatest solos in Pantera’s history and I never hear it get mentioned enough.
Dimebag did such a great job at making his solos flow with the groove of the song. They are not out of place or just random. They are always well thought out and placed perfectly. Another great reaction. 🤘
I think more like well FELT out than thought out, I think it just flowed naturally from him. He was so naturally talented he didn't even need to think about it, it was just like a second voice for him, like how you don't need to think about talking in order to express yourself. That's just how he expressed himself.
I'm glad you picked the version that doesn't stop after "No more headtrip"... like what happens in the music video. I was ready to be disappointed, lol. Thanks Judson for giving it a listen! One of my favorites
Oh and about the heroin use, yes - definitely something that comes back in Phil's lyrics. Suicide Note Pt 1 & 2 for Pantera and from his other band Down - Learn from this Mistake. I've never touched drugs, but I've seen what it did to my brother so I still get a lump in my throat every time I hear it.
That middle section riff is EPiC before the breakdown ❤❤❤ ... Talk about groove metal!!! Great song Pantera definitely had influenced a lot of metal bands just from this one song.
That main solo is so sweet, it distracts from all the movement under it. Such an interesting progression. So glad I got to see them before they disbanded. 🤟🧙♂🤟
I love the simplicity of and how Phils lyrics are brutal and to the point. Pure expression of and release of emotion....no holding back, no PC.....Just a strong-felt emotion.
Had the pleasure of hanging out with Dime a couple of times down here in Oz.. Most genuine person I have ever met, with the kindest soul.. He said that he learnt to get more out of one note from listening to Ace Frehley, who was a master at it.. Black Tooth Grin!! 🥃
Goddamn I hadn't listened to that in too long...I shed a tear for the incredible guitar of dimebag and of course vinny no denying their talents..I played in a band with a singer/guitarist who was friends with them and went to pool parties at their dad's place in Dallas..that must have been crazy
One of my favorites.. one of the two Pantera songs I was absolutely blasting on the amp my parents got me for Christmas when I was a kid, months before Christmas. Lead guitar in this song is just amazing
I absolutely love that y'all don't interrupt the song! Yall wait to hear everything before you comment Thank y'all for doing that! Charleston, South Carolina here!
Greetings to you both, always a pleasure to see judson react to new material. Just as much as Richard's passion for them. I ask again just in case, can you do a video on the band nine inch nail, on the track we're in together please ? Big kisses from Paris, France.
I think that's the first video where I've seen Judson just sit there and really listen to the song, usually he'll plink away on the keys trying to figure the song out.
Another great song and review it's crazy that they were a totally different band before this and Dime Bag and Vinnie said they wanted to do something different and became one of the greatest and most unique metal bands ever
G'day guys, enjoy your videos from down here in Australia 🇦🇺 Love the interactions between you both. Judson is a pisser 😂 he's obviously a very intelligent man with his insights. Oh that Southern drawl lol 👍
Exact thing whenever i listen to this song. The man was spot on! I even wrote a flood in Twitter, currently X yea i know, and it was about a comparison between Alice in Chains and Pantera and also i said in that flood that This Live is Alice in Chains' Love Hate Love. They both have dark arpeggios in the beginning following with powerful riffs and singing. They both come forth and back with emotions such anger and intense passion.
Tuuuuune! This was the one that got me to take them seriously as I was deep down the grunge hole at the time, but the fury of the following track Rise has to be my favourite of theirs.
I always imagined Phil was standing in front of his oven screaming at the cake inside IT’S TIME TO RISE! RISE! RISE! Next day in the studio. Guys, I got the lyrics
Lords unmatched! Sebastian Bach has some funny stories about Dime when they were all touring together. Dime and Snake Sabo dropped acid and cut up a bunch of leather sofas at a swanky hotel and got them all kicked out. There were doing all kinds of drugs and drinks and debauchery in the old country and western days that were the 90s. Phil was into the heroin, but then he "cut the dragon's head off," as he says, which is way more interesting to talk about.
Great song choice, I've been waiting for this one. 10's a great pick too but then I'd agree with any of them. As for Pantera drug/booze shenanigans, it's infamous (lots of fireworks thrown in for a good mix). Phil had a cardiac arrest after a show in 96 due to heroine abuse, think he was clinically dead for few minutes. Most of the bands they toured with couldn't keep up and they toured with some heavyweights. Look it up, plenty of stories. It's amazing how Phil turned his life around. Strong headed dude.
Considering a metal ballad, I'd always recommend Testament's "Trail of Tears" first. A really lost gem, with the magnificent solos by James Murphy, probably his most beautiful ones ever.
Apropos of nothing, it'd be fun to get some like King's X in on this. I was gonna raise Symphony X because they're good Neoclassical, but King's has some amazing riffs and solid groove so something about it feels appropriate.
I think that cemetery gates it's closer to and in a sense suicide note part 1 too ....my albumm of radiohead is the bend (favorite) and after ok.computer....since kids A wellll...
12:38 The solo must be a composition that completes the song, not selfishly detracting or distracting from it. Dime’s discipline to the track is an unsung ability. Enjoyed the break down.
Pantera is not solely groove metal, they're a blend of thrash/speed/groove and some southern rock in the leads department at times, the speed metal disappeared after Cowboys, but the thrash didn't, hence the often label of Half-Thrash by those elitists who cannot enjoy any groove metal (not because of Pantera, but because of what it did to thrash bands who continued on and slowed everything down because it was the trend at the time, Sepultura's Chaos AD for example being the last great (real) Sepultura album, Roots having zero thrash in it and after that, no Max Cavalera, so that was the end of it for them for me). It also brought in the spotlight bands I will never like, even if I heard some obscure tracks I liked, like Korn, their fans are usually so awful, they think they can put Korn on the same level as Slayer or any other way more talented bands out there, even if they were into other legit stuff, the only person I can tolerate doing that is my 10 year gf, she will never let go of Disturbed and Linkin Park for example, but at least she's not much into Korn and all of the other not as known groove/nu-metal bands out there....and I hate Pantera being thrown in with this mix and match bunch of 90's groove and late 90's nu-metal (SOAD is excluded, they never were nu-metal, no rapping, no dj's, no silly gimmicks, but that's another discussion entirely).
Dime Vinny and Rex were extremely heavy drinkers as well as Phil but he got more into drugs as their career went on in 1996 Phil Od. after a show in Texas and his heart stopped for close to 10 mins 😎🧐🤘✌️
"The dude on guitar" 🎸
Enuff said.

As precise as Malmsteen, especially when you watch him play live and see it's always note for note. In reservedness not so much :D

For sure. We’ve been discussing NIN recently. Judson has heard some of their stuff, so the challenge is trying to figure out what he hasn’t heard.
Man, you need to show some CARCASS to Judson🤘🏼
Ya..No Love Lost with the long intro, Buried Dreams, so many others!

The best metal band of all time. I say this because they’re great and they saved metal in the 90’s.
I love these vids
Pantera are my all time fave
If you want a ballad from them I reckon the sleep has the sickest solo
Almost forgot how great this song is. Exelent video.
PROCEEEEED RICHAAAAARRRRD
Love the radiohead in the beginning. I didn’t quite figure it out. This episode was the most heroine like. ❤

That outro is an absolute CLINIC on using a delay. Dime could take ANY effect to a new level.

"Regular People (Conceit)" has some great lyrics and a groove that seems underrated
Pantera was the Metal Band of the 90's. They saved Metal....
Sepultura, Paradise Lost, Blind Guardian, Nightwish..
I really like what Judson said about this one

what about Death - Voice of the Soul?
Dude I get the biggest smile when he makes the stank face
Snakes for the divine by high on fire please.
couldn’t help but laugh when he tried to sing ‘this love’ imagining what it would sound like just knowing he wasn’t ready for phil to scream it 😂
Pantera actually did a Ballad on their 1988 album Power Metal, entitled ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
Great song definitely overlooked one of my favorites too
One of Dime's best solo.
More pantera
Sup sup. I always forget how much I like this song. Hope Judson likes it 🤙
Stellar Thom Yorke impression, Radiohead is good shit.

Machine Head - Davidian
White Zombie - I Am Hell
Lamb of God - Hourglass

"thats a guitar solo?" no idea. guitar decided. long note if guitar want.

Cowboys and This one are still the best before they went deep. Then Southern Trendkill.
You should make him listen to 10's, he'll love the solo
