Other vocal coaches have made progress understanding how this is produced by watching Floor Jansen's approach to it in the chorus of Nightwish's Yours Is An Empty Hope (Wembley performance). Apparently Floor's method of producing the growl is somewhat obvious when viewed by vocal professionals. Hope this helps.
Tatiana has explained in an interview , how long time it took her to get that growl , training it by screaming in a pillow and how she has to do vocal training about every day to be able to do it , so its not easy and something once you learn it you can do it for rest of your life . Specially when she wanted to sound like a man and not a women doing the growl . Loudwire interview Tatiana Shmayluk ua-cam.com/video/UBrqWYMBm60/v-deo.html 12 min 38 sec .
@@mattphillips538 Floor Jansen is friend with Alissa White Gluz , growling vocalist from Arch Enemy , for one good reason . Some old music news headlines .
The Swedish band Arch Enemy and the Finnish band Amorphis will performe live as opening act of Nightwish gig at Romexpo in Bucharest, December 10 , 2015
@@pete_lind Tack sa mykcket. Kiitos paljon.
IIRC Tatiana has stated that regular belts are actually harder for her voice than the growls: in live versions of this song she often replaces the belt in last chorus with a growl.
Women doing growling vocals are not that uncommon these days (Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy is well-known, and for more extreme example there was Som Pluijmers from Cerebral Bore), but Tatiana is still unusual for both extreme effortlesness she moves between cleans, belts and growls, and also her pronunciation in growls is very good. Lots of growlers sound very deep and brutal, but at the cost of not making out any of the lyrics.

I think watching vids like this is my new hobby 😂 love waiting for the reaction
32 count rim shot on the drum and were done! Hehehe
yep ;)
Everytime...all the time
@@louisecookson4786 a hobby?? Its a way of life 😂
I love jinjer reactions. The look of "ctrl alt delete" on people's faces when the first chorus drops never gets old 🤣
End task
Three stages:
1. First reactioner pause, usually right before the chorus, followed by "This is so chill, I love it" comments
2. First Chorus reaction
3. Ending bridge where she belts it and cements you loving what you just witnessed
If you don't react to parts two and three, you are dead inside haha

“It’s kind of kicked back sounding”

HERE. WE. GO.
God I love this song.
“A little bit of grit” OH HONEY JUST WAIT
lol exactly what I was thinking, She also said "nothing crazy yet" and I started laughing!

Just wait a couple of seconds. :)
Check out Tatiana's one take vocal of "Judgement and Punishment" and you can see watch her body position and vocal techniques better.
YESSS!
And Wacken "Perennial" where you can`t hide mistakes! And "I speak Astronomy" simply because it`s such a good song! 😉👍
For sure!
man id love to see that
Hell ya awesome
“She’s nice and supported.”
Yeah, for this. In concerts, she’s VERY animated. OWNS the stage.
but if you pay attention when it comes time to really get down on it. she plants and performs before going back to doing her high energy stuff.
Yeah, she knows when she needs to be grounded. She is talented and experienced.
Last band I saw live before the f-ing lockdowns!
You misunderstood.
In every reaction I've seen, every single one always asks "Is that really her?"
There are actually chanels who analize and explain how to do it properly
You haven't watched many, then.
It's that slide from gorgeous melodic singing to the false fold screaming vocals. It's such a huge shift that it's jarring.
A lot of people don't vary themselves vocally so drastically.
@@monbreau7306yep. I would say 75% of the vocal coaches I have seen react to this know right away how she's doing it. The Fairy Voice Mother can actually DO it a little.
Pisces is just the entrance to the Jinjer rabbit hole. Her voice range and how quickly she can flip from growling the cleans and back is amazing.
She's incredible, but this video was to feature their new drummer. He's a complete beast, and so is the rest of the band. This is one of my favorite rhythm sections.
Everyone talks about the vocals but the rest are very good too.
He really improved on the album version of the song
Well I’ll join in the chorus, perennial live at wacken , teacher teacher, and the one take of judgment & punishment. All just amazing.
Yeah, the reaction videos to this song just never get old. As someone else pointed out, I just sat here smiling at the beginning waiting for the drop.
She's using her vestibular folds to make those noises, more commonly referred to as false cords, which sit kinda above the vocal cords. I would try to avoid calling it screamo though. Screamo is a very specific emo subgenre, and most metal heads are a bit tired to get that comparison. The vocal technique she uses actually comes from the death metal scene, and is typically a pitchless scream. It does indeed require a relaxed throat and a lot of breath control and support from your diaphragm. Doing it wrong is certainly very unhealthy, and in the past a lot of vocalists blew out their voice by using the wrong technique.
The history of metal is paved with the destroyed vocal cords of vocalists. For as many amazing vocalists as we got when screaming and growling really started to blow up it was also a valuable lesson that had to be learned
This ^
You Don't use your Vocal Cords. You use the outer flaps that Only control air, Not vocals. Like politely clearing your throat. That Rattle you hear and feel is the first step.
"I'm waiting for something crazy to happen"
Be careful what you wish for.
Audrey: "I like it, it's really kicked back sounding."
Me: *grabs the popcorn with an evil grin
😂 😂 😂 😂
Katy Perry: “You’re gonna hear me roar!”
Tatiana: “Hold my beer.”
Want to know a little secret, in truth, it is more of a purr in that it is not that loud, mic and amplification are a big help. Might also be why the cleans sound a bit breathy and airy, she is close to singing in a whisper to not need to adjust that mic gain.
She has a little bit of grit... Tatiana: Hold my beer...
“I like it, it sounds very kick-back sounding. I’m waiting for something crazy to happen.”
Jinjer: Hold my beer
You paused at the most impressive part, when she instantly went from growl to clean!
That's the part I listened to over and over and made me a fan. That pause was just painful.
The vocal ambush here has made this video a thing, but from a technical standpoint their concert videos such as Perennial live at Wacken, Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne (the latter has more different vocal techniques crammed into a single song than anything I've seen them release, but is one of their most aggressive songs so I can't wholeheartedly recommend it haha), or the one-take vocal performance of Judgement & Punishment (very raw, even has a bit of an oops left in it, and a good mix of singing, belting, and growls) will show off her abilities much better.
What is this "oops" part you keep mentioning Jeffrey? Are you talking about first set of extreme vocals in the song, 3rd scream in where she sounds like your angry girlfriend? Maybe that was intentional hahaha I've seen/analyzed the performance as much as you have, I think its flawless, as flawless as human being can do. I don't think anyone would ever hear an oops in it, certainly after a first listen.
@@chriswalden798 Jeffrey didn't hear that "oops" also until someone points on it. Have to admit that I still unable to catch it :)
@@glebivanov6323 Yeah, and now I can't unhear it haha. It is really subtle, I won't point it out in more detail because now that I hear it, it's distracting. Not distracting enough that I don't love that video though. I've also noticed that sound in performances by other growlers occasionally now that my ear is listening for it. It isn't really bad, yeah it is there.
Jesus....what a monster of a sentence this is :D:D
@@zsebora lol omg. You are so very right. I could use to break that up a bit...
Audrey- I'm waiting for something to happen.
Everyone who listens to Jinjer- *sips tea*
“Is that really her?” .........as a banner at the bottom of the screen says ‘How to sing like Jinjer for free’....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Teacher Teacher - to see her range
Perennial - live performance to see her perfection
Judgement & Punishment (one take) - to more easily watch her technique
all the other songs - because they are great :D
"Judgement and Punishment 1 Take" is a vocal one take and it shows her close up and also a some of her other styles of singing... it would be a great reaction for you to do.
Also includes a cute cat....
No one is ever prepared for her amazing vocals. I love Tatiana, and the band is just BOSS! She can really belt those vocals out like smoothness.
The natural Jinjer progression from here is to react to "Perennial" Live at Wacken.... Then, on to "Judgement and Punishment" one take live session... Both, very amazing..
Next needs to be "Kingdom" by Devin Townsend for EMGTV
I feel this is inevitable - and can't wait
This is going to happen sooner or later
I see people mentioned, "Judgement and Punishment", and "Perennial" is live, but I would review "teacher teacher" to see Tatiana's vocal range
Who Is Going To Be The One official live is a good one for range as well. Teacher Teacher really highlights the speed at which she can switch.
I think "I Speak Astronomy" is another good example of her range.
It’s a Metal technique nick named “growling.” Almost anyone can learn it and it is mostly practice.
You can also do it wrong and good instructions are very useful.
And I've always since I was a teenager back in the 70 thought everyone could do this...
She also has a vocal fry which sounds amazing
I love this song so much and it make me cry every time I hear it. It’s such a beautiful piece and the contrast is soooooo great
Doughboy Düsseld✨🥰🥰✨
Yes that is all her watch more of her live performances
The band's name is Jinjer. The singer's name is Tatiana Shmailyuk, and she's self-taught.
The lyrics in the chorus are :
"Scale armour belies virgin innocence /
"One being brings life /
"Another runs for Death."
Thanks ♥️
I saw many reactions of this. Professional metalheads (even singers and musicians) with first chords understand, that light part, with necessarily hard metal part (screaming or something). But noone expecting her growling. Tatiana is shockingly talented.

There's actually a video where she explains how she's able to do this!
Link here; ua-cam.com/video/UBrqWYMBm60/v-deo.html
Such a nice surprise, isn't it!? such a good song, great vocals and an awesome band.
I totally recommend it. I also suggest the one Courtney LaPlante of Spirtbox did for Loudwire too - I found it interesting how differently they approached their technique yet have ended up with very similar skillsets at least from a technical standpoint. If you search "VoiceHacks Jinjer" there is a good technical analysis of the technique too.
Angela Gossow taught a workshop years ago and somebody had recorded the good parts, it was about half an hour worth of video I think, if I remember it right. Been a while since I saw it but really cool stuff. :)
Apart from the obvious, the thing that blows my mind about Tatiana is her lyric writing. In a second language incredible! Imagine trying to write something equivalent in Ukrainian. Mad talent!
My dear,
I do not think anyone is ready for this. I love it never the less. The girl can sing...
You had one of the best reaction analysis about her vocals for someone that isn't familiar with the genre from what I have seen. Well done.
my favorite part is when they pause it and analyze her voice and usually saying how calming it is RIGHT BEFORE the drop
I must have watched about 50 different reactions to this video and yours is definitely one of the best and most fun to watch. Not only did I love your very genuine, excited reactions, I was also really fascinated by your professional take and analysis. As someone who's married to a professional voice actress, I really enjoyed hearing you explain all the physical/anatomical aspects, that go into shaping sound with your mouth. It's actually the entire body, depending on what you're aiming for. And Tatiana seems to have a ridiculous amount of knowledge, experience, and also instinct as far as that goes.
For someone who can't sing AT ALL but is still tremendously fascinated by the human voice, this is such a fascinating topic. Thanks so much for expanding my horizon. This was fun!
Yup that is 100% Tatiana! The most versatile vocalist ever in my humble opinion.
Tomi Joutsen, Floor Jansen, Tom Jones?
Mike Patton
ua-cam.com/video/1qAzdEXawM8/v-deo.html
Floor Jansen imo is the most versatile singer
@@jimmyjajm And a worthy candidate for the title. I like some Floor as well, but for my personal tastes Tatiana inches past her.
@@camlloyd3321 taty got in my opinion better growls but Floor in cleans, operatic, high notes, popish style and anything is better, of curse in my opinion
If you want to hear some crazy screaming within a crazy range then check out Devin Townsend. Do his EMGtv of the song Kingdom. Similar in this..just flawless between clean and distorted vocals. Honestly I have no idea how he does it with the type of range with distortion
You look so very scared but excited at the same time. And I love it how people's minds are just blown away
I agree with the "Judgement and Punishment (One Take)" suggestion, but you also need to watch "Perennial" Live at Wacken to understand. "Teacher, Teacher" as well...
Be proud. I've watched a ton of these reaction videos, and your attempt at her growl was solid! Better than all the others so far, and there were a couple good ones :)
Please NOTE few if any are ready for this..... Tatiana is one heck of a singer....... And she is powerful on stage. Her stage presence is spell binding.... This group is the greatest thing to EVER come out of the former U.S.S.R.!!!!!!!! GOLD!!!!! I must thank you for this reaction.... Good job lady!!!!
I love how they all think it's gonna be tame and then she hits the brutal growls and the reaction is priceless😂

Winces in confusion:
"But I like it.....".
This is my first time watching one of your videos, but I Like You. Subscribed for more.
She uses her false vocal folds to create the harsh vocals, as opposed to the vocal fry you hear sometimes when she's singing. This leaves her vocal folds free from wear and tear to continue clean singing.
You've probably already learned that she is using her false folds. Her singing revolutionized my growling on the sax.
That place they pause at. Every. Single. Time.
The reason she is able to have such deep gutterals while still having a somewhat higher speaking voice is because she doesn't use vocal fry at all. Tatiana in interviews has said she never uses vocal fry. Rather what she does is more like false cord screams which don't use your vocal cords at all. The tone she is able to get from false cords is completely independent from the structure of her vocal cords
She doesn't use fry for the growls, that's correct. But she does use vocal fry in this song, too. Fry doesn't equal screaming. Even pop singers use fry.
Wow this is so cool
THank for letting me know 🥰

I love how you couldn't help but enjoy the heavy parts of the song😆❤️
These never get old lol
Love when she paused it right before the drop too Twice!! lmao perfect
This never gets old, this lady looked genuinely mad that she didn't understand how Tatiana was doing her scream.
Someone explained that on the growl moments she's using her false vocal cords and she been growls for a long time and this person says when you growl properly it doesnt hurt your throat and that how she can switch form her false vocals to her real vocals.
I read another comment that stated that the singer does not a native English speaker, Thus she works on on her words are concentrated. really enjoy this piece. And I love this song.
Oh jeez this will be the best Jinjer react yet!!!
Rocking the wife beater..oh you have no idea whats coming.
Oh "she sounds healthy" 😳😳😳
One thing I think the singer reactions miss is how intense and tight the band is. Jinjer has done live playthru’s with all the members, so you can focus on each, so you can see how it all comes together. There is a different vocal style for every situation. The rapper ODB was well known to “always be practicing’”, and it shows. You never doubted it was ODB… Punk singers are a whole style itself…
"In this video I'm gonna break down..." Oh yes, yes you will.
When Audrey went "lalalala" at the beginning, I realized, that it definitely will be funny as heck)

It was genuinely fun watching your reaction and I'm glad to see you so open to metal.
There are other metal bands I've covered before in this channel and this won't be the last :)
Perennial live at wacken is a good concert of her singing a lot more on stage.
Your pause at 9:20 completely destroyed one of the most brilliant things about Tatiana - her ability to switch on the fly without pausing. From growl to amazing cleans and rising to a belt that will melt your soul.
Also, you have to watch her one take of Judgement (and Punishment). A reggae-metal tune that really shows what she can do as well as allowing more her personality to come through!
And I oop 😯
Listen to "Teacher, Teacher" to hear her switch from that vocal fry to singing in a second. Even better is "Perennial" at Wacken live performance.
"Rockin the wife beater"... she about to rock your world.
She can switch it up , like flipping a light switch. She's one of the best ever...👍
That is indeed her, and she sounds just as amazing live. If you want to better check out her technique I suggest Judgement & Punishment (one take live). For a live performance I suggest Perennial at Wacken (pronounced Vacken).

For a deep growl and a seamless run from that to a high pitch scream: Who Is Gonna Be The One live
For transitions between screaming and clean voice in less than a second: Perennial Live at Wacken 2019
For a single breath, 11 second sustained clean run with various note changes: Perennial Live at Wacken 2019
For an even deeper growl and some jazzy cleans: Home Back
For some belting cleans: I Speak Astronomy, Teacher, Teacher! or Judgement (& Punishment)
If none of these "bread crums" tickle your curiosity, then I don't know what will. : )
The videos to both I Speak Astronomy and Home Back are incredibly impressive, but to see live versions you can go to the Alive In Melbourne full set video where there are links to each song in the description.
the secret is, she does not do this sound with her vocal cord but with her false vocal cords - only about 10 seconds before the very end of the song you hear a little recruitment of her vocal cords (in a very relaxed way, though), and in the very end, when the pitch of the scream goes up, she uses her pharynx instead/in addition.
Awesome.
Thanks for the reaction. Have fun. Jinjer is a great band. Lots of good songs.
Happy 2021. My first Pisces reaction of the year. 😁👍
Oh my gosh, I'm thrilled that you did this!! You did such a great job at it, too. :)
This reaction definitely made me smile! I'm so thankful. xD Today was starting to feel like a downward spiral but you helped life me out of it. Thank you!
I'm so glad I finally had time to do this! Blown away. This has been requested a lot before You're very much welcome :)
My favorite part of this song is her clean / growl difference is symbolism of her being a Pisces
The sound is made only by the
vestibular fold and resonance, without the use of vocal cords and therefore has nothing to do with the usual meaning of the term "vocal range". It is a "non-pitched scream" :)
So, long and short of it with screaming is it's a couple things. First is how you manipulate your larynx (I'm not an expert on the human physiology but what I'm attempting to refer to is that location between your jaw and neck. When you move it up or down your adam's apple moves up and down), for example if you lower it and make an "OH" sound it'll remind you of a low opera singer for example, if you move it very high you'll get a higher "tense sound", if you've watched Lilo & Stitch, it sounds like Stitch (this usually helps people in identifying the sound, think when he says "Hiieee"). The second part is the mouth shape and tongue position, the sound can greatly change depending on this. Depending on the style of screaming, your range can make an impact but isn't the end all be all. Lowering your adam's apple and properly positioning your mouth and tongue can greatly lower the sound of the scream, even for female vocalists. Tatiana is an incredible vocalist but she isn't the only female vocalist capable of such feats, actually it's fairly common, it's just a genre that not many tend to explore enough. (In my late teens and early to mid-20s I was a screamer, have done both Inhale and False Chord Exhale for many years, I think roughly around 7, it's been a while but you never forget how it's done.) ~ I hope some of this can be informative!
EDIT: Almost forgot! Diaphragm usage! Her shoulders stay lowered when she screams because she's not breathing with her chest. Long and short of it is that you breathe in and flex your stomach, however I gauge this is far more intense than regular singing, you should never see a screamer raise their shoulders or look like they are "huffing and puffing". She's basically pushing just the right amount of air for each of the screams, you'll notice her breathing in rapidly and heavily but her shoulders stay down. Primarily the reason why people are taught not breathe with their chest is due to being winded and not being able to push out enough air.
Two years of watching reactions to this video and yours might be my favourite. Honestly.
Judgment and Punishment one take next. Tati is very versatile. She dose things nobody is doing at this point. You should check out Home Back as well. Home Back will show you her range.
Also check out Spiritbox Rule of Nines one take. Thank you & Happy New Year!
Better is "Perennial" at Wacken live performance.

Pisces- two fish one angelic and one demonic in one person fighting for control. What I’ve heard that the tongue is back to help control air flow and it’s a growl, and she worked on it to get the male growl.
Bow down to the Queen Tatiana... worship her existence, her sound, her love
She's using a lot of different things together here for the growls. A lot of vocal fry. You can actually hear the base vocal frequencies coming through in her harsh vocals, which is great. And yeah, once you get the basic fry scream going, you can really modify your mouth shape to really affect the exact sound. Screams really heavily rely on mouth shape to change the resonance. You can hear a great example of that on her last scream where she actively modifies the resonance as the note is being sung.
Everyone i watch who are reacting this have the same face when Tatiana drops the vocals into gutural scream or more like growls never gets old 🤣
I’m just here for the pause before the breakdown
Absolutely my favourite bit of these reaction videos. 😂
If you wanna know more about screaming in metal and why it doesnt hurt the singer to do, the charismatic voice paired with will ramos from Lorena shore and they stuck a camera down his throat to see how the vocal chords worked. Was a good watch
"I'm waiting for something crazy to happen" then in like 15 seconds Tatiana goes into her growls/screams lol
If u still reading this Comments: For the Screams she use his false Vocal Cords (like when u do a sigh", at the end of the sigh the distortion is created healthy).
To answer your question yes ist her voice also the low part .. Her name is tatiana and she is very talented 💪👌🤘
We played as a support act to Jinjer in January 2016 and met them backstage. Tatiana is really modest and the guys are very laid back, despite being dissatisfied about the sound. This was all before they got big but they were already unbelievably advanced at that time.
I really think this song is instrument live, but the voice is the same from the album, indeed is layered. But there are live performances from them also! it's her real voice, using false cords technique!
This is now a few years ago. She can now go deeper. If interested, try Home Back. Just debuted the video.
Is that really her?!? I couldn't believe it my first listen either... I had to watch some concert footage to convince myself.... she's amazing...
that's 100% her. You should check out the one-take recording of 'Judgment & Punishment' by Jinjer
