      Other vocal coaches have made progress understanding how this is produced by watching Floor Jansen's approach to it in the chorus of Nightwish's Yours Is An Empty Hope (Wembley performance). Apparently Floor's method of producing the growl is somewhat obvious when viewed by vocal professionals. Hope this helps.

      Tatiana has explained in an interview , how long time it took her to get that growl , training it by screaming in a pillow and how she has to do vocal training about every day to be able to do it , so its not easy and something once you learn it you can do it for rest of your life . Specially when she wanted to sound like a man and not a women doing the growl . Loudwire interview Tatiana Shmayluk ua-cam.com/video/UBrqWYMBm60/v-deo.html 12 min 38 sec .

      IIRC Tatiana has stated that regular belts are actually harder for her voice than the growls: in live versions of this song she often replaces the belt in last chorus with a growl.
      Women doing growling vocals are not that uncommon these days (Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy is well-known, and for more extreme example there was Som Pluijmers from Cerebral Bore), but Tatiana is still unusual for both extreme effortlesness she moves between cleans, belts and growls, and also her pronunciation in growls is very good. Lots of growlers sound very deep and brutal, but at the cost of not making out any of the lyrics.

    She's using her vestibular folds to make those noises, more commonly referred to as false cords, which sit kinda above the vocal cords. I would try to avoid calling it screamo though. Screamo is a very specific emo subgenre, and most metal heads are a bit tired to get that comparison. The vocal technique she uses actually comes from the death metal scene, and is typically a pitchless scream. It does indeed require a relaxed throat and a lot of breath control and support from your diaphragm. Doing it wrong is certainly very unhealthy, and in the past a lot of vocalists blew out their voice by using the wrong technique.

    • @projectomnia1997
      @projectomnia1997 4 роки тому +17

      The history of metal is paved with the destroyed vocal cords of vocalists. For as many amazing vocalists as we got when screaming and growling really started to blow up it was also a valuable lesson that had to be learned

    I must have watched about 50 different reactions to this video and yours is definitely one of the best and most fun to watch. Not only did I love your very genuine, excited reactions, I was also really fascinated by your professional take and analysis. As someone who's married to a professional voice actress, I really enjoyed hearing you explain all the physical/anatomical aspects, that go into shaping sound with your mouth. It's actually the entire body, depending on what you're aiming for. And Tatiana seems to have a ridiculous amount of knowledge, experience, and also instinct as far as that goes.
    For someone who can't sing AT ALL but is still tremendously fascinated by the human voice, this is such a fascinating topic. Thanks so much for expanding my horizon. This was fun!

    The vocal ambush here has made this video a thing, but from a technical standpoint their concert videos such as Perennial live at Wacken, Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne (the latter has more different vocal techniques crammed into a single song than anything I've seen them release, but is one of their most aggressive songs so I can't wholeheartedly recommend it haha), or the one-take vocal performance of Judgement & Punishment (very raw, even has a bit of an oops left in it, and a good mix of singing, belting, and growls) will show off her abilities much better.

    • @chriswalden798
      @chriswalden798 4 роки тому +5

      What is this "oops" part you keep mentioning Jeffrey? Are you talking about first set of extreme vocals in the song, 3rd scream in where she sounds like your angry girlfriend? Maybe that was intentional hahaha I've seen/analyzed the performance as much as you have, I think its flawless, as flawless as human being can do. The reason she is able to have such deep gutterals while still having a somewhat higher speaking voice is because she doesn't use vocal fry at all. Tatiana in interviews has said she never uses vocal fry. Rather what she does is more like false cord screams which don't use your vocal cords at all. The tone she is able to get from false cords is completely independent from the structure of her vocal cords

    Tatiana has so many more tattoos now, not just her neck but her left arm as well. I really liked this more au natural look, but I also like her tats. She is a very impressive vocalist, and the band is tight. Great reaction, and yes you should give Judgment and Punisment (One Take Performance) a review, and maybe Perennial (live at Wacken.)

    She uses her false vocal folds to create the harsh vocals, as opposed to the vocal fry you hear sometimes when she's singing. This leaves her vocal folds free from wear and tear to continue clean singing.

  • @Bobbias
    @Bobbias 4 роки тому +1

    She's using a lot of different things together here for the growls. A lot of vocal fry. You can actually hear the base vocal frequencies coming through in her harsh vocals, which is great. And yeah, once you get the basic fry scream going, you can really modify your mouth shape to really affect the exact sound. Screams really heavily rely on mouth shape to change the resonance. You can hear a great example of that on her last scream where she actively modifies the resonance as the note is being sung.

  • @mitrikgaduk347
    @mitrikgaduk347 3 роки тому

    So, long and short of it with screaming is it's a couple things. First is how you manipulate your larynx (I'm not an expert on the human physiology but what I'm attempting to refer to is that location between your jaw and neck. When you move it up or down your adam's apple moves up and down), for example if you lower it and make an "OH" sound it'll remind you of a low opera singer for example, if you move it very high you'll get a higher "tense sound", if you've watched Lilo & Stitch, it sounds like Stitch (this usually helps people in identifying the sound, think when he says "Hiieee"). The second part is the mouth shape and tongue position, the sound can greatly change depending on this. Depending on the style of screaming, your range can make an impact but isn't the end all be all. Lowering your adam's apple and properly positioning your mouth and tongue can greatly lower the sound of the scream, even for female vocalists. Tatiana is an incredible vocalist but she isn't the only female vocalist capable of such feats, actually it's fairly common, it's just a genre that not many tend to explore enough. (In my late teens and early to mid-20s I was a screamer, have done both Inhale and False Chord Exhale for many years, I think roughly around 7, it's been a while but you never forget how it's done.) ~ I hope some of this can be informative!
    EDIT: Almost forgot! Diaphragm usage! Her shoulders stay lowered when she screams because she's not breathing with her chest. Long and short of it is that you breathe in and flex your stomach, however I gauge this is far more intense than regular singing, you should never see a screamer raise their shoulders or look like they are "huffing and puffing". She's basically pushing just the right amount of air for each of the screams, you'll notice her breathing in rapidly and heavily but her shoulders stay down. Primarily the reason why people are taught not breathe with their chest is due to being winded and not being able to push out enough air.

  • @DairyAir
    @DairyAir 2 роки тому +3

    One thing I think the singer reactions miss is how intense and tight the band is. Jinjer has done live playthru’s with all the members, so you can focus on each, so you can see how it all comes together. There is a different vocal style for every situation. The rapper ODB was well known to “always be practicing’”, and it shows. You never doubted it was ODB… Punk singers are a whole style itself…

    I really think this song is instrument live, but the voice is the same from the album, indeed is layered. But there are live performances from them also! it's her real voice, using false cords technique!
