- The gorgeous ending to Yasujiro Ozu's Floating Weeds (1959). The down and out Komajuro Arashi meets his mistress Sumiko (played masterfully by Ganjiro Nakamura and Machiko Kyo respectively) in a train station.
For me Kojun Saito stands alongside Nino Rota, Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone and Zbigniew Preisner as one of the greatest composer to collaborate regularly with a director. When his fragile melody kicks in at the beginning of the scene it never fails to give me goosebumps.
This film is such a wonderful achievement (especially when you consider that Ozu managed to direct the equally outstanding Ohayo in the same year!).
As always this clip is uploaded in appreciation of Yasujiro Ozu and the wonderful filmmakers who collaborated with him. This film was made for Daiei Studios and I would imagine it is still owned by them or Kadokawa Pictures? - Фільми й анімація
ほんと、なんか良いんですよねえ。
自然と涙が溢れてきます。
How can film get better? The beautiful composition and script, only compliments the subtle storytelling, never takes over. Transporting film making.
I love this ending. Quietly optimistic which is surprising for later Ozu.
今日マチコさんの「男のメンツの立ててあげ方」が凄く上手い。男は互いの仲よりも自分のメンツを大切にしてしまう愚かなところをもつ生き物。その男の欠落のバランスをとってあげることのできる女性。本当に良いシーンです。
たばこの火をつけるところなど、ほとんど逆レイプというか女が男を押し倒さんばかりの強引さで、笑ってしまいます。

昨日、阿児アリーナで観ました。
５００人、超満員でした。
おもしろかった。
上映前にミニ講演・座談会がありました。
そこで当時、中学２年生（現在７０代後半）の男性がロケ見学の話をされていました。
その方は志島の方で（現在は磯部在住）、兄とふたりで撮影した写真をプロジェクターを使って見せてくれました。
至近距離（１メートル以内）で見た若尾文子の美しさを、さっき見たかのように興奮して話していました。
庭先の赤い毛唐の華と青いちょうちんが絵画の様に綺麗なのが強烈に残る作品でした。
テールランプの赤と空の色。走る列車の音に重なる音楽。余韻のあるラストは小津作品の良さの一つです。
落ち込んだ時、京マチ子さん演じるすみ子のような女性が側にいてくれたら・・・ 赤いランプが希望の光に見えてくる。
「腐れ縁」って人は呼ぶかも知れないけど、この怨讐を乗り越えた男と女の不思議な感情・・・愛情なのかも知れないけど、大人の関係が素敵ですね。

Such a gorgeous film, and you are absolutely correct, Ozu was surrounded by collaborators who could anticipate exactly what he wanted, who help stopwatches in their hands so that the rhythms of the final edit could be clocked to the tenth of a second . . . I love all late (color) Ozu but particularly this film, a meticulous remake of his own earlier work. Why don't the Japanese today seem to appreciate it, or at least, not nearly as much as we strange foreigners seem to? Mystère. . . . .

They won't be missed. The Japanese of today
Want spicy space-pirate comics and Van Gogh.
Midnight already? Times Square is a semiologist's heaven:
Mitsubishi, Sony, Suntory, Toshiba, Kirin, Benihana . . .
But horrors! Great wings hide the moon. Are the Japanese passing us over,
As an in-depth update asserts, for the shores of Gimme Gucci?
The sun has risen in Rome. By dark not a pair
Of lizard loafers will be left unbought.
Leaving us where? With egg on our faces, or tofu. Those people
Were some sort of golden opportunity, but we blew it.

京マチ子が一瞬「何コイツ」って顔になるんだけど、でもすぐに隣の男が愛おしくて仕方ないって笑顔に変わる、その芝居が最高なんじゃないですか
