I thought the build-up at the start was slow and boring. It feels like backstory. The romance wasn't just thrown out in the second half. Elsie's brother was killed in the same battle that Ben Cameron was a part of. There was that conflict driving a wedge between Ben and Elsie. The story then shows the villain kidnapping the girl. The movie then largely plays out as a typical hero film. There was even a face reveal when the hero saves the girl. It's just like "I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you!"
If you replace the kkk with your hero group and replace the blacks with your enemies, the movie looks like a primitive hero flick. There were flaws, but it planted the seeds of the cinematic future.
This was also the earliest source I know of where the term "Aryan" was used in the context similar to Nazi ideology. I want to know if this film impacted the German people after WW1.
I want to know if this movie was used to solidify a national identity before we got involved in WW1. There was a scene where former enemies joined forces to fight a common enemy. This film was very pro union. The part that makes it suck for us today is that the villain in the film is a black man (actually a white man in half assed black face).
Why does everybody have to keep loving this racist-ass motherfucking shit film?! Its so motherfucking degenerate and overwhelming you lose count!

Very good review.. I agree with you that, as great and revolutionary filmmaker that DW Griffith was, the way he communicated his ideas was a bit all over the place. Same happened with Intolerance.. Another master piece, yet the intolerance message was messy..

You try to make a movie in 1915, and see how well your ideas come across.What would you have done differently if you were a director in 1915, i'm sure you could do a better job, lol. Put the film in context of when it was made, schmuck.
So basically, if the movie was just the first half, it would have been great.
I never thought of it that way, but yes, that would be the case.

It actually goes by pretty fast, because it's never boring. At least I didn't feel that way.
Interesting, I would think that even by today's standards a female would be creep-ed out by someone acting in this manner but can see that they would
call the police if given the opportunity. This movie was set in the 1800's so that may in fact be a normal incident when not given a alternative to get away.

So I just did a refresher on The Birth of a Nation 1915 release and I have to say you left A LOT out of your review.
The female who jumped off the cliff previously hit the black solider who had been STALKING her in the woods. That's kind of a big sign that one is not interested in
the other party. The fact that the solider knew she was being courted by another white man shows that he didn't have good intentions towards the prospect
of a relationship and gives some insight as to why the female decided to jump off the cliff. Perhaps the rapping of white women by black soldiers or field workers was common place in this time?
You also forgot to mention how the black solider who was being hidden from the whites who wanted to hang or bring him to justice had attacked a white man looking for the solider in a salon and eventually the white man after fighting 5-7 black men got shot in the back and then the chest by the innocent black solider.
Is this the part in the movie where the Black people were acting like nice friendly people for you???
My review of your review is that we both saw the same movie but from completely different minds sets.
If you remove the race card from this movie it would be about a man perusing a women that didn't have feeling for him and it ended up resulting in
her death and lovers desire for revenge.
P.S. the scene where the two white children were hiding under the sheets to scare the black children was interesting...
to think the KKK was created as a ghostly effigy based off of this incident shows the childishness of the symbol and darkness of its intent.

Birth of A Nation was aggressively average.
I had to watch the movie for my summer class and this had to be one of the most confusing and weirdest movie. The whole romance thing, the flow, and the racism is poorly done. It's not a good film and not worth 3 hours of your life.
