I recall a similar remark made by the late author James Baldwin many years ago -- that "white people" did not exist before European colonization of the Americas. Previously they were known as Britons, Irish, Swedes, Germans, etc......

We’re not of African descent ma’am. We’re indigenous to the Americas. We’re actually the only people in America who isn’t of foreign descent. Our ancestors never identified as negro, black, Indian or red man. You can verify this with the 1790 census. In 1790, they didn’t account for the entire country, just their colony. So the slaves the referenced in the census was Europe-peons not my people or Africans. As you’ll notice, the 1790 census doesn’t mention blacks or Africans.

I'm reading Ms. Battalora's book "Birth of a White Nation" and am near the end. After making copious notes of topics that really jump out at me as I read the book, I must say that this book is the work of genius that opened my mind to a mostly unknown genesis of the fallacy of Whiteness in America. Perhaps one of the most important books I've ever read, and I'm a lifelong Biblioholic.

I can also say that this presentation pushed those racist and sexist buttons for lots of white, male Americans. I could wish that they would pay more attention to the "divide and conquer" strategy of the Big Moneyboys, and keep in mind that solidarity with the 99% is the best way to achieve our natural rights that have been taken from us by our ruling class. Thank you for sharing this information about the 1790 census. The material covered in this history and my book is from roughly a century preceding that census. I make no claims as to what indigenous or people from Africa called themselves. Rather, the study is of a specific historical context in which English lawmakers first used a category called “white” to reference a group of humanity in law exploring how, when, where, and why.
I love this work by Dr. Battalora, and I am so grateful for sharing it in public lectures and UA-cam, not simply in the academic class room. So, much that empowers regular people from the Ivory Tower is never really shared with the general public. I don't know if she has been "forced," but I think it is sad, that she is not also addressing the reality that most "Black" people in North America are the descendants of autochthonous Americans here before the late 15th century explorations of Europe. There is as much, or more evidence for this fact, as she shares for the invention of "White" people. It is time to tell the whole truth, if we really hope to stop the divide and conquer tactics of the economic elites. Not only are most "Blacks" in America, as native as "Native" Americans, White in law, was never simply about skin color, and there is plenty of evidence for that as well. All three of these issues need to be made more public, and addressed at the same time, or the divide and conquer will persist, because people's perceptions of themselves and history will remain totally skewed with divide and conquer biases still in effect.
It's not the burden of the individual to prove doubters wrong. It is the responsibility of doubters to prove this wrong. If you can't you're just name calling for the sake of name calling and actually not providing any solid proof that this isn't the case. Also, making someone have to convince you when it's your job to do the research yourself and come to your own conclusions is a another form of logical fallacy because the person can bring you exactly all the proof and all you have to do is say "oh well I don't believe that" and in your limited mind you believe it's not true based on, you not liking what you hear. Just like how we don't accuse smart women of witchcraft or a person with seizure disorder as being possessed by the devil because time passed and science advanced and we figured out what illnesses were, I know it's scary living in the future with all this access to information! But if you research yourself, you can't think that you're lying to yourself. Also, maybe we should listen to the professionals? Something that this country hasn't done in many many years.
I agree with her message, but there *was* mention of a white race before the 1680s. I believe it was a book funded by the Portuguese monarchy in the 15th century that classified Africans as a separate race.. this was done to justify the slave trade. This ideology came from the aristocracy in a top down manner; it took hundreds of years for common people to start identifying themselves as belonging to a racial group. White identity didn't catch on in popular culture in America until after Bacon's Rebellion. Even then, the English still viewed the Irish as an inferior "race" despite their "white" skin; their idea of race would have been completely foreign to us.. This just further reflects how contrived "race" is.. it's an ideology that has led to the deaths of billions of people and it's definitions change arbitrary based on the politics of the day.
@@waynetables6414 yeah, like, at least fundamentally when you think about it the terminology of white being race makes no sense but then at the same time because such a group was created and were given privileges others didn't get and it's pretty much stayed in that favor for as long as it's been an idea which has been roughly around that amount of time, it has done a tremendous amount of damage along with unfathomable amount of deaths. If I think about that for too long I get really sad because I can't imagine what the world would look like today if we all just were able to coexist and didn't have certain people with war genes. But, there's a great deal of healing that needs to go on and a genuinely hope that people are up to and receptive of learning and growing.

She failed to mention that many Europeans, that came from Europe, were NOT white, but black, which would also explain why so many married British women. Also, she called blacks, at that time, African. However, primary source books, written at that time period, give NO mention of Africa, ONLY Natives and Europeans. At that time the terms Black and White were not commonly used to describe people. So, you would have to research the actual records, that give the physical description of these people.
I think that's one of her points from the beginning color wasn't as important after slavery that was found an injustice treatment And white and black was basically started to be used to separate the two groups for the benefit of one group and the disadvantages of the other where they made the color of your skin the difference which is the definition of white supremacism in this country still today.

Problem with this is that she only speaks of the transatlantic slave trade era which was around 350 years. Prior to that white Christians were enslaved for 700 to 1000 years by Muslims and Africans. Wonderful detail! Didn’t the advent of “black” come about here as well though? That almost seems to be avoided, and I can sort of see why... but just like there was no sudden genetic mutation of fairer skin races into one “white” race, there are too many different beautiful races/cultures to lump into a singular “black” one. @@andreah8509 I don’t call “it” that… that’s the purpose of the quotes. Also, I think you’ve missed the whole point here. As best we know, the earliest humans had no colour -at least, not like people tend to think of it today. Scientists tend to agree that humans started with very pale skin -like chimpanzees. But the real colour came from where each group settled in relation to the equator due to the amount of sunlight they were exposed to generation to generation. They could be totally wrong though, and you could be right! And that would be totally fine. Intelligent people really don’t keep score of that kind of thing. There are positive people and negative people and complexion has nothing to do with it. When we as brothers and sisters see one group being mistreated just because of their appearance or skin colour, it’s all of our duty to respond to it. Unfortunately, we’ve done an extremely shitty job of that as a whole.
This has rightfully become, IMHO, the seminal lecture on the interfaces between law, color, gender, classism, socio-ecomic and political power, legal inequalities, and white supremacy via the literal invention of the term "White" to separate indentured White servants and African slaves and free Black people, as well as free other races...all taxed to death. Finally the truth and there you have it, white people did not exist before 1681. This lady is telling the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Very few people who know the true history of white people will tell it like this lady has done, ive nothing but respect for her honesty, courage and willingness to share and tell the truth. She reminds me of Jane Elliot another white lady who tells it how it is. I believe white people are incapable of telling and accepting the truth but every now and then a white person surprises me and I'm forced to admirer their bravery.

There is one problem and something she didn't mention. 1 Black Americans are not African. 99% of us have Irish Scottish and Welsh surnames. These names didnt come from white owners as most of the Black's who actually from Ireland Scotland and Wales. I've seen the ship manifest. Black Scottish Kings chartered the 13 colonies they never shared the pictures on the charters. I've seen them. King James and his sons were Black Scots. I would guess that the unexplained boom in the population in the early 17th century coincided with the advent of steam technology. Even larger booms in population occurred with the discoveries of coal and oil and their use.

Here expressing of how the law of Virginia was written to technically apply to both genders but was applied unequally favoring men, reminds me of present day California custodial laws. Technically, they are written to treat both parents equally but they are still rooted in the traditions of old where mothers clearly received more favorable rulings, are allowed more freedoms in the court room, and their stories are considered as having a higher rate of validity than that of a man. In theory, the law is equally written but in reality it is not. Even though this is a step in the right direction, which many states haven’t even done, it is not far enough. If we were to take modern concepts of equity then we would write laws to intentionally favor fathers in custodial cases to balance out the equation. Father’s, after all, are more than piggy banks and want to be more involved in their children’s lives. Having a perfect record myself, being a teacher, and a pastor - I still went through immense hurdles and over $50,000 in legal fees to get to some semblance of equal share. The sins perpetrated against me, if I was a female, would have easily granted me full custody. I wish this was an isolated incident, but it is quite common. I can only imagine that similar laws written “equally” in previous generations were applied. Laws are supposed to protect us but it is still up to the men and women of the country to interpret and enforce said laws. They imperfect individuals with their own biases. We will always being contending with government on the sole basis of the human condition. It doesn’t surprise me that another group of elites in history saw something they could take advantage of and used their power to enforce it.
Many today seem to miss out by focusing too much on the issue of “white Supremacy” in the negative. I agree with the premise that it needed to be done away with. When she asks us to imagine what our country would look like without it…..It is possible our country wouldn’t exist at all. It is possible that we never would have had the labor force to support its expansion. It is possible that the USA would be 50 different countries right now. Now, to pretend like this same pattern didn’t play out in every other country would be foolish. In the USA it is White vs Black. In the Middle East it could be Jewish vs Non-Jewish. It could be North Korean and South Korean. This same concept of people separating themselves from another group of people for the purpose of power and control resides within every nation that has ever existed. We do have the singular benefit of certain freedoms here in the USA that would allow us to make changes without the need to destroy and and completely rebuild. There is no great reset needed. A great reset…that would again, in time, simply play out the same way all over again…with one group gaining power and wanting to keep it.

See articles that protect rights and then go onto articles 90 and 91 that produce from 1641 through 1783 in Massachusetts a separate class of people. Forts were built on the West Coast of Africa in the 1400 and 1500's to collect people to be enslaved on the basis of their skill and labor force. What are you talking about?

We’re not of African descent ma’am. We’re indigenous to the Americas. We’re actually the only people in America who isn’t of foreign descent. Our ancestors never identified as negro, black, Indian or red man. You can verify this with the 1790 census. In 1790, they didn’t account for the entire country, just their colony. So the slaves the referenced in the census was Europe-peons not my people or Africans. As you’ll notice, the 1790 census doesn’t mention blacks or Africans.
I don't think I have learned anything in my life as important as what I've learned from this book.
You will learn a hell of a lot more, reading the court cases, than listening to a slave, excuse me citizen.

After making copious notes of topics that really jump out at me as I read the book, I must say that this book is the work of genius that opened my mind to a mostly unknown genesis of the fallacy of Whiteness in America. I love this work by Dr. Battalora, and I am so grateful for sharing it in public lectures and UA-cam, not simply in the academic class room. So, much that empowers regular people from the Ivory Tower is never really shared with the general public.
I don't know if she has been "forced," but I think it is sad, that she is not also addressing the reality that most "Black" people in North America are the descendants of autochthonous Americans here before the late 15th century explorations of Europe. There is as much, or more evidence for this fact, as she shares for the invention of "White" people.
It is time to tell the whole truth, if we really hope to stop the divide and conquer tactics of the economic elites. Not only are most "Blacks" in America, as native as "Native" Americans, White in law, was never simply about skin color, and there is plenty of evidence for that as well. All three of these issues need to be made more public, and addressed at the same time, or the divide and conquer will persist, because people's perceptions of themselves and history will remain totally skewed with divide and conquer biases still in effect.

It's not the burden of the individual to prove doubters wrong. It is the responsibility of doubters to prove this wrong. If you can't you're just name calling for the sake of name calling and actually not providing any solid proof that this isn't the case. Also, making someone have to convince you when it's your job to do the research yourself and come to your own conclusions is a another form of logical fallacy because the person can bring you exactly all the proof and all you have to do is say "oh well I don't believe that" and in your limited mind you believe it's not true based on, you not liking what you hear. Just like how we don't accuse smart women of witchcraft or a person with seizure disorder as being possessed by the devil because time passed and science advanced and we figured out what illnesses were, I know it's scary living in the future with all this access to information! I agree with her message, but there *was* mention of a white race before the 1680s. I believe it was a book funded by the Portuguese monarchy in the 15th century that classified Africans as a separate race.. this was done to justify the slave trade. This ideology came from the aristocracy in a top down manner; it took hundreds of years for common people to start identifying themselves as belonging to a racial group. White identity didn't catch on in popular culture in America until after Bacon's Rebellion. Even then, the English still viewed the Irish as an inferior "race" despite their "white" skin; their idea of race would have been completely foreign to us.. This just further reflects how contrived "race" is.. it's an ideology that has led to the deaths of billions of people and it's definitions change arbitrary based on the politics of the day.

She failed to mention that many Europeans, that came from Europe, were NOT white, but black, which would also explain why so many married British women. Also, she called blacks, at that time, African. However, primary source books, written at that time period, give NO mention of Africa, ONLY Natives and Europeans. At that time the terms Black and White were not commonly used to describe people. So, you would have to research the actual records, that give the physical description of these people.
I think that's one of her points from the beginning color wasn't as important after slavery that was found an injustice treatment And white and black was basically started to be used to separate the two groups for the benefit of one group and the disadvantages of the other where they made the color of your skin the difference which is the definition of white supremacism in this country still today.

As best we know, the earliest humans had no colour -at least, not like people tend to think of it today. Scientists tend to agree that humans started with very pale skin -like chimpanzees. But the real colour came from where each group settled in relation to the equator due to the amount of sunlight they were exposed to generation to generation. They could be totally wrong though, and you could be right! And that would be totally fine. Intelligent people really don’t keep score of that kind of thing. There are positive people and negative people and complexion has nothing to do with it. When we as brothers and sisters see one group being mistreated just because of their appearance or skin colour, it’s all of our duty to respond to it. Unfortunately, we’ve done an extremely shitty job of that as a whole.

I have a new book coming out for middle schoolers that is inspired by true events. It tells the story of a young English girl’s journey from indenture to freedom in Maryland who experienced the transition from being called English and then “white” and the social transformation that came with it. I know people say African slaves, but the thing is it was mostly American black native people who was thrown into slavery. Black people are native to America.

She's saying the first appearance of the word "white" came in 1681in antimiscegenation law. According to another source, the term "white" came much earlier and in England:
"The Jacobean playwright Thomas Middleton invented the concept of “white people” on October 29, 1613, the date his play The Triumphs of Truth was first performed. The phrase was first uttered by the character of an African king who looks out upon an English audience and declares: “I see amazement set upon the faces/Of these white people, wond’rings and strange gazes.” As far as I, and others, have been able to tell, Middleton’s play is the earliest printed example of a European author referring to fellow Europeans as “white people”.

I would guess that the unexplained boom in the population in the early 17th century coincided with the advent of steam technology. Even larger booms in population occurred with the discoveries of coal and oil and their use.

Here expressing of how the law of Virginia was written to technically apply to both genders but was applied unequally favoring men, reminds me of present day California custodial laws. Technically, they are written to treat both parents equally but they are still rooted in the traditions of old where mothers clearly received more favorable rulings, are allowed more freedoms in the court room, and their stories are considered as having a higher rate of validity than that of a man. In theory, the law is equally written but in reality it is not. Even though this is a step in the right direction, which many states haven’t even done, it is not far enough. If we were to take modern concepts of equity then we would write laws to intentionally favor fathers in custodial cases to balance out the equation.
Father’s, after all, are more than piggy banks and want to be more involved in their children’s lives. Having a perfect record myself, being a teacher, and a pastor - I still went through immense hurdles and over $50,000 in legal fees to get to some semblance of equal share. The sins perpetrated against me, if I was a female, would have easily granted me full custody. I wish this was an isolated incident, but it is quite common.
I can only imagine that similar laws written “equally” in previous generations were applied. Laws are supposed to protect us but it is still up to the men and women of the country to interpret and enforce said laws. They imperfect individuals with their own biases. We will always being contending with government on the sole basis of the human condition. It doesn’t surprise me that another group of elites in history saw something they could take advantage of and used their power to enforce it.
Many today seem to miss out by focusing too much on the issue of “white Supremacy” in the negative. I agree with the premise that it needed to be done away with. When she asks us to imagine what our country would look like without it…..It is possible our country wouldn’t exist at all. It is possible that we never would have had the labor force to support its expansion. It is possible that the USA would be 50 different countries right now. Now, to pretend like this same pattern didn’t play out in every other country would be foolish. In the USA it is White vs Black. In the Middle East it could be Jewish vs Non-Jewish. It could be North Korean and South Korean. This same concept of people separating themselves from another group of people for the purpose of power and control resides within every nation that has ever existed. We do have the singular benefit of certain freedoms here in the USA that would allow us to make changes without the need to destroy and and completely rebuild. There is no great reset needed. A great reset…that would again, in time, simply play out the same way all over again…with one group gaining power and wanting to keep it.

See articles that protect rights and then go onto articles 90 and 91 that produce from 1641 through 1783 in Massachusetts a separate class of people. Forts were built on the West Coast of Africa in the 1400 and 1500's to collect people to be enslaved on the basis of their skill and labor force. What are you talking about?
