    AJ67901,
    Thanks for getting footage of this terrible accident. That spot will forever be marred in history. May the lost rest in peace.

    yes, it's been that hot every day since the crash. They were running track hoes with no AC today and acting like it was no big deal. Thanks for watching!

    So sad to see this knowing 3 men were killed in this accident. Things like this should never happen.

    Sad to see what happens just from falling asleep. What a tragic deal.

      The cause has never been determined. There were two people in the cab, if one was asleep, why didn't the other one hit the emergency? Nobody knows what happened.

      The conductor was asleep. The engineer was wide awake. (you have to be to keep the alerter from going off and throwing the train into emergency.) The engineer had severe eyesight problems, and had undergone surgery to have cataracts removed. He had already warned his superiors about not being able to easily see signals, and yet they still continued to let him work, assuming his “attentive” conductor would help him see the signals. It proved to be a fatal mistake. And assumptions are the mother of all screw ups!

      @@anb740 you don’t have to be wide awake to keep the alerter going. These guys do it for a living 12 hours at a time.

    I would guess that UP will come up with something, but I believe the 2 men that were lost that were on the unit where no one jumped might be the only ones. Most likely no one will ever know for sure. DG

    I'll leave that conclusion to you after you watch the NTSB's recreation of the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Regardless of how it happened, it was tragic.

    The Railroad Operating Rules are written in blood!! I wonder, as a retired RR Tower Operator, just how this one happened...someone blew by a signal or something like that??

    What was the exact location of the wreck, or nearest cross street? I'm planning a trip to Kansas soon and on my way back I'd like to stop by the location... pay my respects..

    • @AJ67901

      It was east of Goodwell approximately 1 mile. The crash location was maybe 100' feet west of the Mile 24 Road Crossing. You'll see it when you arrive because it's at the crest of a hill and there is a cross on the right of way between the highway and railroad.

    If no Safety Devices were removed from the Crew.. what i can remember seeing Videos on Trains One of which was on the History channel anytime a Crew enters the engines it most likely has to be a 2 man crew and as there going down the Track the Engineer has to Hit the Horn, or something similar because of the Shut Down Warning Indicator if he (the Engineer) does not do any of which in a manor of Time the Warning Indicator should proceed Engine Shut Down but in this Case it makes ya wonder why the Dispatchers didn't see it coming and if they did where was the response course you have wave they may have responded but it may been little to Late to save there Lives..

    you "never could find the lead units"? The 2 SD70ACes were the lead units, so you did find at least one of them. The other was probably scrapped by that time.

    • @AJ67901
      @AJ67901  10 років тому +1

      I think what I meant to say was that they were never as visible as the ones laying in the ditch near the highway. I could see parts that I later identified as SD70ACe across the tracks where they were cutting things up. They had that area closed off and I wouldn't consider intruding. Thanks for watching.
