Doc I was diabetic since I was 13 years old .. doctors put me on insulin.. after that I started gaining more weight and I was told I’ll be insulin dependent.. after watching your videos I have my sugars in control and on medication now doctors have stopped insulin.. now I’m 28 years old .. half of my life I was worried about this is insulin injections
@@samruddhikale9916Dr Ben bikman explains in his book , that when sugar is high , insulin production increases to be able to bring down the sugar levels. After a long period like that , the body starts to become insulin resistance which means it won’t allow the insulin to “burn” the sugar, so the insulin production goes even higher and crazier until you become high in glucose (sugar) and high in insulin and that’s when you become diabetic. Now , dr Ben is wondering what’s the reason doctors will give you more insulin if the only thing you actually need to do is bring your glucose levels down and stop insulin resistance and become insulin sensitive again and the diabetes will go bye bye..
Thank you, Dr. Fung. You’ve truly changed my life. While I’ve never had weight issues, I struggled with depression and neglected my eating habits. Over time, I developed joint pain, arthritis, and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia over a year ago. At 44, I considered myself healthy-until I wasn’t. That’s when I discovered water fasting, and I can’t even begin to describe how much it’s helped me. I’ve done 5-day and 10-day fasts, and more regularly, 3- or 4-day fasts. My doctor was amazed by how much I lowered my cholesterol, but he was skeptical when I told him about fasting. Despite his reservations, I refused medication because I feel so much better now. Thank you for everything!
When you fast the body burns fat but doest it store everything you eat after the fast? it anticipates a calorie deprivation and stores everything that goes in.
We started "The Obesity Code" diet about 4 months ago. I'm closing in on 40 pounds lost and my wife is killing it too in fat burn mode! We feel so much better and are eating real food. That hardest part for me was getting used to intermittent fasting... but now it's an easy habit.
This is the most concise and best explanation of weight loss I have ever heard. This is the exact reason why 99% percent of people cannot lose weight. I've been struggling my whole life with obesity and finally feel like I have a grasp on whats happening!! Thank you
I tried the keto diet and I craved carbs all the time. I couldn't stay on the keto diet. I found the Mayo Clinic Diet book by Donald Hensrud. This book taught how to measure calories in foods so that you will lose weight. This book also taught to have a serving of fruit (my favorite is a cup of cantaloupe) and a nonstarchy vegetable with every meal. This book also taught to eat unrefined carbs, like steel cut oats instead of instant oats. I lost weight following this diet and have kept most of the weight off since 2021. I weigh myself every day to ensure I am not gaining weight back. I now do intermittent fasting having two meals a day and sometimes one meal a day especially if I am going to a restaurant and eating a lot of calories for one meal. I don't follow the diet as religiously as I did when I first used it to lose weight and have more fat in the diet and more refined carbs than recommended, but I still measure calories to ensure I am not overeating calories way too much. I also only eat one meal a day sometimes when I have overeaten calories on another day. Weighing myself daily helps ensure I am not gaining too much weight. I also do one meal a day when I want to lose the extra weight I see on the scale.

Thankyou for clarifying the pivotal role Insulin has on fat burning. The nuanced effect insulin has is always overlooked and leads to so much misunderstanding on how to unlock our body's stores of fat. Our metabolism is inherently 'lazy' and will quickly adapt to reduced caloric intake to conserve energy expenditure; something no diet-fad book from the last 50 years has ever acknowledged.
Many animals in the wild need to eat less and less as they get older. Some animals actually need to eat as little as 2 times per week in order to maintain a healthy weight. I am starting to believe this is the case for people as well. I have tracked my ketones for a year, and am now using a lumen. The results are telling me that I don't need to eat as much or as often as I have been told all my life.
Thank you for this video! I started my diet 20/10/24. I am following 2MAD (eating twice a day) + also eating as natural as possible, no more processed foods and sugar. I now understand why many people struggle to lose weight. I also find it weird that most doctors/dieticians don't tell patients this... Losing weight and maintaining the right mindset is also much easier now that I know how my body is working inside while I am fasting. Thanks for enlightening us with the right information Dr. Fung! 😊
Please note that your body does not differentiate between "natural" or processed foods. High carb foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, oatmeal are "all natural" but will still spike your glucose and therefore insulin. High sugar fruits such as bananas, mango are "all natural" but will also spike your glucose and therefore insulin. Look at all foods equally, whether highly processed or not, through the lens of high carbs/sugar.

When the “body slows its metabolic rate” how does it do this? What metabolic functions does it not do? What specific consequences does this have on the body? For instance does it slow synthesis of new cells? Or does it ‘slow’ the burn of energy? Can you expand more on what I means for the body to “slow its metabolic rate” and what important body functions are not carried out because of this? Thank you! Love your content!
@@vaness909so I feel cold if I end up doing a 36-48hr fast…but I hear fasting RAISES metabolism. So serious question, do you feel cold in both scenarios?
I was anorexic but before that I was on a standard diet of about 1200 cals and one of the first signs of not eating enough for my body that I didnt know at the time was how cold I felt permanently and the less I ate the worse it got my normal body temp was just over 34 Celsius and I had times when it was so bad it went down to 32.5 Celsius. My normal temp is just over 36 Celsius. You can end up with gastric issues too the less you eat and more infrequently your intestines slow down and you might end up with chronic constipation.

Too many ppl blow it off and think you are just not trying. Luckily, we can do this, we just have to have much more patience and wherewithal!
Fasting is a great tool, but it's not a sustainable approach ultimately. It's far better to reduce your carb intake to a physiological optimal level, otherwise you'll gain weight when you eat carbs with high glycemic load. Optimising glycemic load is the key.
Number of so called calories has been proven to be totally irrelevant to weight change. Nutrition composition and to cut as many carbs as possible is the key,
Thank you for an informative vides. Eating natural fats like butter, cream etc is part of the keto diet.Wouldn't this fat also be stored in the body. like carbs? or how is it metabolized? thank you.
He doesn't know something the others don't. His statement here is misleading. Insulin happens to be the hormone that is responsible for storing fat. That doesn't mean that I am guaranteed to lose weight if I manage to reduce that hormone's level in my blood. My insulin levels rise after every meal. That doesn't mean that I am getting fat after every meal, because insulin only goes to storing fat when we overeat. Even if it's only protein I ate, insulin is necessary to push protein into my muscle tissue. Likewise, claims that insulin levels must be low in order for us to lose weight, are also false, because the level of the hormone changes a lot over the course of the day. See Layne Norton's work.
Great explanation and info as always, Dr Fung. QUESTION: How do you explain this, and then answer back when people who don't want to give up carbs, or believe in the old 'eat 6 times a day', etc say that many ppl have lost weight successfully eating almost ONLY carbs but strictly by calorie counting? Is it a matter of just slowly wearing down the body's stores? Also would that lead to more lean mass loss as opposed to losing actual fat?
Thank you for this wonderful simple explanation of the insulin hormone in our complex body. I will send to a beloved family member who will greatly benefit from the message. ❤

I stop eating 3 hours before bed and just before bed, i drink a tablespoon of good quality EVOO from Costco. When i get up in the morning, my appetite is non-existent and I eat my first meal around 4pm and i feel great.
If I’m very (uncomfortably) hungry between meals I take a Tbs of EVOO with real salt. It shuts off hunger & no glucose response.
@@tracy3812 Wow, thank you for that tip Tracy. I was just wondering what is the best way to ward off that hunger. I will definitely be trying that.
I hope you stop eating by 10 pm at least. Please don't fast for more than 18 hours everyday😓
Even this is too much. You still need to eat and have all the nutrients your body requires.
@@Anonymous54965you need to not eat after dinner so for many, that would be around 7. Many fast for more than 18 hours. Inform yourself of the benefits
Happens to me every time. When I eat late at night, I'm hungry in the morning. When I don't eat past 9pm, no hunger whatsoever till about 1pm next day.
🗣️every part of this! So reassuring to see you talk about the significance of hormones in weightloss. I’ve personally lost 125lbs and it changed my life when I understood the impact of insulin and leptin. Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you for your content .. please never stop ..
Love the analogy.
Too bad they don't have at home inulin tests like they do with ketones and glucose . It would save a lot of people from developing diabetes in the first place
Thanks for sharing this. I recommend reading “Health and Beauty Mastery” by Julian Bannet, that book is a real eye opener! I completely changed my habits
I got it, truly a good book
This really covers the basic message very well - A good one to share with people who are very new the IF etc .
I ❤ Dr Jason Fung Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!
This is a fantastic video.
Perfect explanation! Fung, you are the best 🤗
Thank you Dr Fung ❤
Best video ever and i have watched 100s
Glad to see you back!
When you explain the why, facts make much more sense. Thanks!
This is the best explanation. Thank you
Thankyou for clarifying the pivotal role Insulin has on fat burning.
Thank you Dr. Feng. I have lost weight on interrmittent fasting by eating 10:00-6. Then I plateaued. Going to try it again only Mon through Friday.
Love listening to u Dr Fung. What does your fasting life style look like? U r my health hero!!!
You’re a tremendous resource for the massive masses, Jason!
Great explanation! Not easy to simplify complex topics like he did with great analogies.
Thank you so much, Dr Fung!
Thanks Dr. Fung
We always recommend our diabetics to watch your video. Life changing. ❤❤❤
I‘m glad you‘re back ! 😊
Excellent presentation! Graphics makes it clear!
Thank you Dr fung
Whats does exercise do? Does it lower insulin? I practice IF but i also exercise regularly.
I’ve been doing this for 3 months lost 30 pounds like not even trying. This is amazing. I’m NEVER hungry
Please let me know your routine 🙏

Why do you have videos of you "twerking" in front of your "kid?" You're a 60 year old woman. Grow up.
Thank you so much for your guidance and informative videos dr. Fung Over the past 7 months, I’ve lost 24 kg, and my HbA1c has improved from 8.8 to 4.9. Without medicine just by doing OMAD and walking for 90 min. Daily my age is 38 Your advice has been life-changing, and I’m truly grateful for your videos in helping me achieve these results. Can you share your OMAD diet plan
@@tinamotwani78 I don't stick to any of the diet plan just do omad have normal meal whatever cooked avoid snaking and outdoor eating just do intermittent fasting u will see great results in just few months if u r on medication try to consult your doctor and tell him to adjust your medication as per your fasting window.

Awesome. So good to hear.
Great explanation, thank you.
Your video comes at a perfect time as I've been wondering why my weight loss has stalled. Your explanation makes perfect sense. Thank you!!
@gregraj The Mayo Clinic Diet book by Donald Hensrud may benefit you. It teaches how to measure calories in food to lose weight. It also teaches to have a serving of fruit (my favorite is a cup of cantaloupe) and a nonstarchy vegetable at every meal. It also teaches to have unrefined carbs like steel cut oats, beans, sweet potatoes, etc. I couldn't stay on a keto diet for long as I had such cravings for carbs. I gave up hope until I had success with The Mayo Clinic Diet.
@michelep.7249 sorry for not replying sooner, but I just saw your message. Thank you, I'll check out the book. Cheers!
I adore the way you teach us. All your books are life changing too.
Thanks Jason - Clear and vital education !
You really clarified the calorie process/affect on weight gain/loss. Thank you!
intermittent fasting is the answer for me…. just a normal way of life …. thank you for helping me understand how the body works , and letting me figure out the key to my own bodies workings
Always good to see and hear you doc.
Dr.JF,you the man!👍🏼💪🏼🇺🇸
Thanks Dr. Very well explained!!!
So appreciate your teachings. Thank you. ❤❤❤
Thank you Dr. Fung. A super clear explanation. Now I finally understood why the metabolism does not go down if my insulin is low.
great explanation of how insulin works and how anyone can burn body fat..or store body fat. I have used this method of intermittent fasting 18/6 in conjunction with a low carb diet (
When the “body slows its metabolic rate” how does it do this? What metabolic functions does it not do? What specific consequences does this have on the body? For instance does it slow synthesis of new cells? Or does it ‘slow’ the burn of energy? Can you expand more on what I means for the body to “slow its metabolic rate” and what important body functions are not carried out because of this?
Thank you! Love your content!
You will feel cold and have less energy to carry out daily tasks.
@@vaness909so I feel cold if I end up doing a 36-48hr fast…but I hear fasting RAISES metabolism. So serious question, do you feel cold in both scenarios?
The body will do things such as deprioritize non vital functionalities like hair and nail growth or make you sleep/remain still more.
@@philliptamez make sure you eat enough food, especially fatty meats, between your fasts, and you will find you dont get as cold during the fast.
Thank you Dr. Fung.
Building on intermittent fasting, does any scientific research guide us on *when* the optimal time to workout (while fasting)?
Before? After? During?
Thanks.
Thank you! Now I understand.
Thank you Doc 😊
Brilliant. Makes a lot of sense and lines up with other things I've heard. On a 36 hour fast right now, in autophagy. Thanks for this!!
Thank you! Great video keeps me going strong with good changes
very helpful advice thank you
Wow, what a great informative video. Thank you so much, doctor. You are the best ❤🙏
I’m premenopausal 45 years young and omg I’m struggling with weight loss. I am now fasting over 24 hours rolling and finally I see results
Thats good to hear you are seeing results on day 1! Im on day 3 right now and cant see any difference but hoping!

*shakes your hand in solidarity* Ugh me too! What a club to be in haha! It's definitely trickier, on top of all the other not-fun effects perimenopause causes.
Nutrition composition and to cut as many carbs as possible is the key,
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you for the clear explanation. Great post!
Thanks for the informative video Dr. Fung!
Nice analogy with the refrigerator 👍
Great! Info…👍👍
Also eating 1 cookie vs eating 3 eggs makes me wanna eat the entire fridge
Same here!!! 😂
Sometimes even a red apple is enough to make me want to devour the whole fridge. I have to stick to green apples 😅
Fab explanation you are amazing!
Semaglutide increases insulin production, how then does it induce weightloss? 🤔
What is the best eating window for intermittent fasting?
Thank you for an informative vides. Eating natural fats like butter, cream etc is part of the keto diet.Wouldn't this fat also be stored in the body. like carbs? or how is it metabolized? thank you.
Basically it's still CICO, but your calories out will decrease if you always have elevated insulin, since you will be likely to move less
Dr Fung has knocked the ball outta the park with every video!
He’s been debunked several times by many QUALIFIED people.
Thank you so much
Great explanation and info as always, Dr Fung.
Thanks Dr Fung!
Thank you for this wonderful simple explanation of the insulin hormone in our complex body. I will send to a beloved family member who will greatly benefit from the message. ❤
Thank you for this information!
