Oftentimes, your standard blood test is simply not going to give you the information you need to know if ferritin or iron is influencing your hair. You must get a serum iron blood test and a ferritin blood test to know exactly where you're at. You might have some additional symptoms that would allow you to key into that. If your iron is very low, you're also going to have symptoms like bruising easily, fatigue, and light-headedness. You're also going to run into potentially having heart palpitations. However, if your ferritin is low, you might not have any of those physical symptoms or hair loss.
Iron deficiency or anemia can often be overlooked as a cause of hair loss in the hair loss world. There are many cases where individuals have tried various treatments, such as Minoxidil, Propecia, PRP, or vitamins, without success. They may eventually end up in a trichologist's office for evaluation, and it is then discovered that they have low ferritin levels, which can significantly impact hair loss and prevent hair regrowth. Therefore, standard blood tests including ferritin, vitamin D3, and blood type should be performed to identify any underlying causes of hair loss.
