    Funniest one I have ever got was "De donde eres?" "Nací en Nigeria pero crecí en Chicago" "Se hablan español en Nigeria? 🤨"
    Took it as the best compliment I have ever received.

    Facts! I am Black (and fairly lightskinned). I speak in Spanish at work when I need to, not fluent, but I understand and speak in a way that is commonly understood. I still remember being randomly tested during an interview for a job with a lot of Spanish-speaking patients😅 (I was fine)! I usually get the he might be Carribean Latino (DR, PR, etc). Then they start asking about where my family is from, and try to figure out how I learned Spanish. The funniest moments are when I am with a patient who asks if I speak Spanish so I comply, and then they get in the room with the doctor and speak in near-perfect English. I get it, but still it’s funny. I will still grab an interpreter with the quickness if it is too much, but it helps people feel comfortable if they are able to speak in their native language, just as if I were to go to another country and not understand a word. No one wants that.

      @@amayahyisrael7819 what about latinos with a lot of indigenous Afro and Euro (many are a mixture of the 3)

    • @amayahyisrael7819
      @amayahyisrael7819 Рік тому

      @sarahcarr7343 I can't see what the person that I responded to posted. I don't know if they deleted their comment. But if my memory serves me correctly, I was saying there is a difference between euro Latinos and afro Latinos. I know there are many with a mixture of European and African descent, but afro Latinos have a much higher percentage of African in them than European Latinos or Hispanics that have European in their blood. An example of this could be Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Dominicans have a much higher percentage of African in their dna than Puerto Ricans, generally speaking. Now with that being said, there are puertoricans that have a much higher percentage of African descent in contrast to other Puerto Ricans, they even look "black", so in all one must look at the DNA of an individual to gather that information.

    I've experienced all of that, and more, in Japan. I'm as white as they come, but I can speak excellent Japanese, in three different dialects too. I've been questioned about my parents, I've been asked if I'm mixed Japanese, which is impossible to believe if you'd see me. I've also had Japanese people have conversations with me in Japanese, saying that they don't understand English.... With both of us speaking Japanese the entire time.

  • @antoniokastrocarlisledemel6617

    I'm Ethiopian and Puerto Rican and Spanish was my first language but i look and sound more African American so naturally most people think i can't speak Spanish and that used to make me angry when i was younger... nowadays it just makes me laugh seeing how their entire demeanor changes when i bust out speaking Spanish "like where that come from is there someone behind u?" Though it does still irk me at times when they start talking shit in Spanish and I'm like "i understand everything u just said" Most people don't seem to understand that languages are color blind..it's not your color that makes u Colombian or Venezuelan or Mexican...it's the culture, the people and the place u came up in..i remember especially when i was younger alot of Ricans especially would try to make it seem like some composition of Native and Spanish blood made u Boricua..like if u have Dark skin and an afro is somehow makes u less Boricua or none at all.. fortunately my Grandma and Aunt kept me from being ignorant like that but unfortunately the vast majority still carry those beliefs

    • @amayahyisrael7819
      @amayahyisrael7819 Рік тому +3

      I know exactly what you mean. That's because alot of people strive to be more European. So if you are melaninated with kinky hair, then you appear to be less than Puerto Rican, Dominican or whatever hispanic country you're from... even if you are hispanic. I am not fluent in Spanish but I definitely can relate to where you are coming from. I am African American, Puerto Rican and Filipino. I was actually telling my mom this evening it was tough as a kid. On the Puerto Rican side I wasnt considered hispanic enough because of how I looked and because I wasn't fluent in Spanish. I have very thick curly borderline coarse hair and my skin is darker than the lighter Puerto Ricans. They always referred to me as morena. But I grew up in the culture as my grand mother was born in Puerto Rico and Spanish is her first language, so I was immersed in the Puerto Rican culture and language. It's ashame that the mindset hasn't changed. But some people don't view it that way and acknowledge the african parts of parts of these countries like afro-boricua, afro-Cuba, etc.

      @@antoniokastrocarlisledemel6617 Buenos dias! I should clarify, my Puerto Rican family did not treat me that way, but there were alot of Hispanics that did. It's all good, I am an adult now so I don't have to impress anyone nor am I trying to find acceptance.
      Yes I am currently trying to relearn Spanish. I speak a little bit of spanglish lol. It's surprising though how easily it is coming back to me. I used to be fluent when I was alot younger and also learned Spanish in school. So it's all dormit, making relearning alot easier. If I didn't grow up around my Spanish speaking people nor learn the language officially I think this would have been alot more difficult. At the same time, I know learning Spanish with no prior experience is one of the more easier languages to learn.
      That is cool that you are trying to learn French, I heard there are some similarities between that language and Spanish. I completely agree, learning languages like Arabic, japanase, mandarin etc, those languages are difficult. I remember speaking with a Chinese native and she said it takes about 10 years to chinese natives to fully learn the language because there are so many different pronunciations for each word, which can give one word several different meanings. I appreciate your kindness, and for the record, I am a female ☺️
