Hi Gwen! I am looking forward to watching your journey unfold in Portugal! I am 47, and I've been looking into various countries to move to in the future. Portugal looks like a great option from what I've seen. (Of course, I need to come visit for a bit 😁) Like you, I like that it is still close to the US East Coast. Have you found that it is easy to find expats to gather with occasionally? And how is it as far as assimilating into the culture and befriending locals?

Wonderful! I hope you make it to Portugal for a visit to see if it is right for you.
Honestly, when it comes to meeting people, this is a personal and subjective endeavor. With my personality type, I have not found it hard to meet people. But what may be easy for me may not be easy for others. It all depends on you and your personality type.

Great channel Gwen and such a valuable resource. I’m 56 and from UK, my plan was always to have my solo D7 visa appointment in February 2024, due to work obligations I could not move it to accommodate the NHR changes. Obviously I’m a bit disappointed I’ll be €400 a month or so worse off, but the bigger picture is waaaaay more important. I love Northern Portugal and the D7 means I can still work ( I’m a freelance public health consultant so will be working online if I need extra resources) so I’ll cut my clothe accordingly. Who knows what the future will bring, or the budget on the 29th, I’m just happy I have a plan to start my new adventure next year.
Good luck to you and your resettlement

Hi Gwen you channel is great. Thanx so much for sharing. I am 60 and have traveled on my own for many many years and will be moving ALONE. I love traveling as a solo person you meet so many more people than if you are coupled up. It's so fun to explore. I started a UA-cam Channel too a few months ago above, so I can share my journey in increments. Unfortuneately I cannot apply for VISA until end of 2024. Because of the selling of my house late fall 2024. I do not want to pay any capital gains. The NHR does affect me because I am not retired yet and cannot afford more tax at all. So not ruling Portugal out. But splitting my trip with ITaly instead this winter adn knocked my trip in half. Instead of buying a property in Portugal now I will wait and see what happened with NHR. I had 2 consultations with a lawyer and investment person. Neither were able to answer my questions. Have an appontment now with a tax lawyer in italy to get my italy questions answered will find the proper tax personn in Portugal after all this end of year stuff is over. Everyone is crazy. So I took half of my eggs out of the basket and giving me more options in 2024. I have been coming to Europe in winters for 25 years. I am ready for full time but I did not want to get caught up in all of the craziness. We will see what happens in 2024 with NHR plus my income will increase as I get older with less deductions so I have to find out details for my own situation. One step at a time, but instead of Portugal for 3 months and buying property I put the property buying on hold now and spending most of the trip in Italy....thanx for your information. Just stepping outside the box for now. SInce I cannot be in Portugal or other until 2025 to apply for visa and by then they may for sure pull NHR. Cheers. thanx for al lof the great information appreciate you. Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Portugal/Italy
