My wife and I are planning on making the move in about 5 years. We both speak the language and we look forward to the slower pace, but personally, I would rather live in a quaint New England, hallmark town than to live anywhere else, but unfortunately, the U.S., healthcare system costs makes it difficult for us, and the prices of homes in PT are much more reasonable. Good luck with your storage space! I’ve watched people struggle with that. I’m 3 years away from my move to Portugal. I’ve been working on my move out of the US/California for 4 years. I’ve always wanted to live in another country, out of interest. My final 2 countries to consider are Portugal and France. I just spent 3 weeks in Portugal last June, and I loved it! France, I’ve been to several times. What I love most, are my oldest nephews, who are French. They want me to move there. The ease, warmth, straightforward nature of the Portuguese people is more appealing.
Good for you on your long-term planning. I can understand the pull to both France and Portugal, especially if you have family in France. Yes, the Portuguese people are a huge bonus. That is a common feeling amongst expats in Portugal. Good luck your decision on where to move.

Hello. First, if you have not been to Portugal, I highly suggest that be first on the list for consideration of moving for retirement. In terms of the NHR tax regime, I would consult a Portuguese tax consultant experienced in working with Americans before making any decisions. You may find finances still in your favor. Portugal has many great assets despite the disappearance of the NHR. Do not let this hold you up on exploring next steps for your future. 😀
The NHR was never going to last. I’ve been researching moving to Portugal for just over 3 years. When I started, it was 0%, and then became 10%. So, I knew by the time I was ready to move, it may not be there. But, my online research told me, a tax professional in the US who has other clients in Portugal, plus a tax consultant in Portugal, will show you how Portuguese taxes can be deducted. With information about your own financial situation, you’ll be more confident.

I was seriously considering a D7 visa and did a scouting trip last November to Lisbon, Porto, and Madeira and liked it very much. More so Porto than Lisbon. Though I liked Madeira more wasn't too attracted to it for being off mainland. Now the recent NHR change in rules has thrown a curved ball and rethinking if I should especially since my healthier finances will get a hit with new higher Portugal taxes. My goal was to get a D7 and live for 2 years see most of Europe being in the continent and not have to fly every time. I am now considering what I call a "Schengen Shuffle" where you stay in the Schengen area for 89 days and after the 180th day come back to Schengen. you can shuffle between Schengen and non Schengen zones and accomplish this and thus NOT be a tax entity of a 2nd country. If you buy a Condo / flat in a low cost region that could be a place of your own. I did come across in Spain South of Alicante 2 Br townhomes in gated gplf course area (Roda golf course, south of Murcia) for $125k (900-1000sft), which is very affordable and with low condo fee as low as 100 a month. The problem is in trying to find and rent a place for 3 months since most places want a minimum 6 month lease. Other low cost countries in non Schengen area would be Bulgaria, Romania, or MonteNegro. Have to do dome more research..
congratulations. How did you cover the home rental agreement that is mandatory. What city u r contemplating for a start. Hope you know that recently they changed the NHR rules on taxes. If you are a high net worth individual need to check the pros and cons. We visited last year Lisbon, Porto and Madeira and liked it. Good place to live and groceries rent nor too pricey like in other parts of Europe. The only downside now is the rentals that are going up like crazy. Healthcare is a HUGE issue in the US if you're under medicare age. Even if you have insurance the costs and coverage are so opaque that it's difficult to seek treatment, you have no idea if insurance will deny your claim for some frivolous reason leaving you on the hook for thousands of dollars.
Putting aside emigrants from ex portuguese colonies (Brazil, Angola..), most emigrants in Portugal are from Ukraine, Romania, the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands.. It's pretty interesting to see Americans & Canadians being now interested in Portugal. it also means that something is wrong in the US. Violence, healthcare & politics seems to be main factors of people willing to move out. Moving to another country isn't only escaping a system but the opportunity to find excitement. Leaning the language, meeting new people, trying new food, new activities.
Hi, great channel. Were you able to get your NHR status approved ? I was not going to apply for my visa until Fall of 2024 so I am out of NHR option. I will check out your channel. I was coming to buy a farm this winter but with Portugal pulling NHR I switched my trip to Southern Italy and shortened it in half. I will wait and see what happens this next year. Well, I hope you have not ruled out Portugal solely for the possibility of the NHR going away, because Portugal does have more to offer than a tax regime, of course. I do mention in my second video that consulting a PT tax professional is a very important up-front step before making any decisions or move: ua-cam.com/video/Y80BlCFiWZo/v-deo.html That said, the lack of the NHR may not negatively affect you. Everyone's situation is different. Have you consulted a PT tax professional? Plus, the NHR is still not up for a vote until the end of the month and, should it still be available, it may go through changes and be available for certain people. I've been trying to get there for the last 4 yrs and hope to get to Portugal within the next 6 months. My main question for you is about taxes, are you going to be double taxed on your income?
Thank you! I appreciate the support. I highly suggest you get a PT tax pro asap to plan effectively (it’s actually one thing I mention in my upcoming video). As you do your research you’ll find that PT shares a double taxation exemption with the US. Also, if you want to try to capture the NHR, I would apply for a visa asap as the NHR MAY be extended a wee bit but, if it is, it’s going to be a brief extension. There’s a lot going on with the PT Prime Minister right now (Google!). Good luck!

I have a travel agent idea for you to consider. Last year I did a tour from the US to Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela (we stopped at San Sébastien for 1 hour!) Then to Fatima, Santarem, and Lisbon. It was actually a grueling trip because we spent hours on end on a bus and would arrive at our hotels at night. I would never take a bus tour through Europe again! It was miserable being on the bus. We also had to stop at numerous truck stops! However, I wouldn't want to drive in a country where I don't speak the language in case I get lost. Is it possible to take the train to do this trip? If so, would you consider being a travel agent/facilitator to help an American take this trip by train? You wouldn't even have to accompany people, you could just arrange everything and then be available for phone calls or texts along the way to make sure the travelers get to each destination and provide travel assistance and advice if needed. I would go again if I knew there was a friendly American travel agent in Portugal available to help.

Also, Paris is hosting the summer 2024 Olympics July - August, so keep that in mind. Many people are starting to travel in the shoulder season, so if it were me, I'd be fully booked no later than March if were thinking of going in the fall. You can work under the D7 visa, but work income is not used for the purpose of applying for the D7. The D7 is for passive income. If you are planning on using your working income as 'proof of income', you may wish to apply under the D8 visa. I would confirm this with an immigration service. In the US, you'll more than likely be working through the VFS office, not directly with the Portugal Consulate. I would go the to VFS Global website (www.vfsglobal.com/en/individuals/index.html) and find what location is closest to you and confirm if they who you'll have your visa application appointment with. Again, you can confirm all of this with your immigration service. Good luck!

That said, the lack of the NHR may not negatively affect you. Everyone's situation is different. Have you consulted a PT tax professional? Plus, the NHR is still not up for a vote until the end of the month and, should it still be available, it may go through changes and be available for certain people. Congrats on your move Gwen! I just found your channel. So excited for you. I plan on retiring in 7 yrs and Portugal is on top of my list. I've been trying to get there for the last 4 yrs and hope to get to Portugal within the next 6 months. My main question for you is about taxes, are you going to be double taxed on your income?

I highly suggest you get a PT tax pro asap to plan effectively (it’s actually one thing I mention in my upcoming video). As you do your research you’ll find that PT shares a double taxation exemption with the US. Also, if you want to try to capture the NHR, I would apply for a visa asap as the NHR MAY be extended a wee bit but, if it is, it’s going to be a brief extension. There’s a lot going on with the PT Prime Minister right now (Google!). Good luck!
Also, congrats on moving to Portugal. It is a beautiful country and the people are really wonderful. I noticed a lot of the signs are in English there, which I thought was interesting, and a lot of the Portuguese people speak English.

I have a travel agent idea for you to consider. Last year I did a tour from the US to Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela (we stopped at San Sébastien for 1 hour!) Then to Fatima, Santarem, and Lisbon. It was actually a grueling trip because we spent hours on end on a bus and would arrive at our hotels at night. I would never take a bus tour through Europe again! It was miserable being on the bus. We also had to stop at numerous truck stops! However, I wouldn't want to drive in a country where I don't speak the language in case I get lost. Is it possible to take the train to do this trip? If so, would you consider being a travel agent/facilitator to help an American take this trip by train? You wouldn't even have to accompany people, you could just arrange everything and then be available for phone calls or texts along the way to make sure the travelers get to each destination and provide travel assistance and advice if needed. I would go again if I knew there was a friendly American travel agent in Portugal available to help.

@@lisapolanski9379 Paris is always a good idea! It is expensive, so off season is a great way to save money and avoid the throng of tourists. Also, Paris is hosting the summer 2024 Olympics July - August, so keep that in mind. Many people are starting to travel in the shoulder season, so if it were me, I'd be fully booked no later than March if were thinking of going in the fall. @CORRTravel Thanks for the info. I'll have to think about whether it's worth it to go to Paris. I might just want to go to Lourdes and then spend more time in Spain, including San Sebastián and the other parts of Spain I didn't see. I'll have to watch some more videos and give it some thought.
@@lisapolanski9379 Apologies for the delay in responding. Well, don't discount Paris if you really want to go. It all comes down to your priorities, your type of travel, budget and timeline. If you have an itinerary already made, I do do Itinerary Audits (info on my website). However, if you are looking for someone to prepare an itinerary for you, I also do that. I create all of my own travel itineraries so I've been doing it forever. 😀 To end, if you are wanting to travel in the summer, I would book immediately. Always, the sooner the better. You can work under the D7 visa, but work income is not used for the purpose of applying for the D7. The D7 is for passive income. If you are planning on using your working income as 'proof of income', you may wish to apply under the D8 visa. I would confirm this with an immigration service.
In the US, you'll more than likely be working through the VFS office, not directly with the Portugal Consulate. I would go the to VFS Global website (www.vfsglobal.com/en/individuals/index.html) and find what location is closest to you and confirm if they who you'll have your visa application appointment with. Again, you can confirm all of this with your immigration service. Good luck!
