  • The best HVAC Brand doesn't matter. I've done other videos on that because having a good brand and bad installer means you've got a bad install. However, what are the 5 best HVAC systems on the market?
That list is here. Two criteria must be met. First, there has to be something unique or proprietary making it special among all the products in the HVAC industry. And second, its special qualities must be beneficial to you, the homeowner!

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

I have a 5 ton Lennox system HVAC and the AC was great until landscaper cut the hose to the system. I will swear by this system it is 25 years and is terrific. I had them service every year, and will replace it with the same and check out the others. BTW they added an additional air vent to my stairs .

You speak of the Rheem water sensor as a positive. Believe me, it is not! It is very prone to trip over nothing, and often lose connection. There's 2 codes. One just for Water Circuit Open, and Water Sensed. Get both often. Sometimes, on initial start up.
Love Rheem! Hate the water sensor idea! Or fix the issue. Maybe not have to be tripped base on continuity.

After having two long term Trane systems I purchased Trane as my most recent replacement considering the great life from the previous two. Two years ago my son decided to replace two 15 year old Am. Std. units at his home. He obtained quotes from several local dealers. I encouraged him to pay more and get the Trane which he did. Unfortunately one of the units has been a lemon and is still giving trouble. The unit kept wetting the filter and loosing refrigerant. After the one year warranty for labor expired he had to pay several hundred for labor to replace a leaking condensate plastic pan which failed due to the oil and chemicals leaking from the evaporator. The labor and refrigerant is not covered by Trane even when caused by a defective evaporator coil. Over a thousand dollars for refrigerant and labor not covered just seems to be absurd. The previous technicians did not identify the source of the leak. Last week another technician was checking the unit and said he did not think there was a detectable leak as the refrigerant was leaking so slow. All of sudden his sniffer in his tool bag began alarming. He had failed to turn it off when storing it. After a lot of dismantling and checking he located the leak in the condenser and has ordered a new one. After it is replaced and more refrigerant is used we do not know how much the charge will be. I really feel bad for influencing him to purchase Trane. Talking with another dealer where I live he has the opinion that Trane quality has declined.

The "Only" issue I have been told about Trane/American Standard is the leaking evaporator coils. The local supplier "claims" to have an almost 40% failure rate within 6 months to 1 year. I personally have not seen this, don't deal with DX equipment, I work with chillers and boilers. I have a new Lennox system, it had a leak within 6 months, was an easy fix, seems to be working fine. There are hundreds of 25+ year old Trane DX units still running, on commercial buildings.

I went with a Luxaire HL20B3621S Acclimate 1-Phase Heat Pump Split System. I know many people seem to hate York products but it has served me well. I believe its all about the quality of the install team. If they do everything the right way and don't take short cuts. Compaines in my area who offer Trane I would never go with because they don't pressure test or braze with a flow of nitrogen, nor do they side the unit for the home. So all though many will say Trane is the best, Trane here sucks because of the quaily of the teams that are installing them. I got 10 year parts and labor warranty through Johnston Controls. The system is quite with a Sound Level 70 dba running full. It also Variable Capacity Inverter Controlled Scroll Compressor, fully Communicating control. To tell you the truth I have seem Goodman's out preform a Trane or Daikin or Trane because of crappy installs. So really its about the company and quality of install for me. I have always told people when looking for a good HVAC company cheap is not always better. You will truly get what you pay for.

I think the camera takes great video. I’m hoping you don’t mind answering a question. I recently received a quote to replace a 4 ton AC unit…condenser, evaporator coil, Plenum, pan, 16 SEER, single stage cooling. Attic job. Replace one small section of ductwork that leads to a bedroom, where the current duct is smaller than the rest of the ducts. 80,000 BTU. Gas heater/furnace. 1900 square-foot home. $11,500. Carrier or Heil brand. In your opinion, does that sound like a reasonable price?

How about a VRF unit using a EXV Kit such as Hitachi ? I have to replace a 4 ton heat pump split system which has propane aux heat. Located in the southern states. From what I read so far it sounds way more efficient and less costly than a inverter compressor unit. Only problem I see is the local installers a reluctant to move off what they know year after year or adopt new tech.

I am located in Huntington NY USA. Since 1978 I have heated my home with a Heat Pump. I also have 65 Solar panels on the roof of my home. I also use a heat pump water heater to make hot water, I have an electric stove and oven along with the usual amount of electric lights, Televisions, Etc....Etc. I keep the thermostat set at 74 Degree Fahrenheit for heating when it it is cold and 78 Degrees Fahrenheit for cooling when it is hot. During the past 12 months my total cost for electric has been $165 Dollars US. The system is a Lennox 5 Ton Air to Air Heat Pump. Inside the house I have an Air Duct System to direct the warm air from the heat Pump. In the summer the same unit serves as Air Conditioning for the house. I have a HEPPA 16 Filter System to filter out dust and pollen. Me next door neighbor lives in a more or less identical house with Oil Heat and they spend about $3,000 a year on oil. I have saved a ton of money with the heat pump and my house is much more comfortable in winter than my neighbor.

I have 10 year old Lennox that the board just went out on (had to jump and bypass safety switches temporarily). $250 for a "universal" board as the contractor's people can't get the Lennox board. Then it became clear the fan on the outside unit needs to be replaced (was told $450 to replace, parts + labor).
I really liked the contractor they have but they aren't Lennox folk but can do Rheem and other brands. It's a 4-ton electric Heating & Air unit with heat pump system in it. I have no gas at the property so it'll be another heat pump.
He quoted me $7800 for the cheapest Rheem unit, which was everything - parts & labor. I have nothing to compare it to as I've never bought an HVAC unit. Does all of that sound right, and also, is Rheem a good brand? I don't mind paying around $10-12k but I do want something like the econet where I can control it while away. Thoughts? Suggestions?

No mention about cost, he was talking about the high efficiency of the Lennox 99 furnace and 28 seer on the unit. The problem is that could cost 25k+ depending upon size, and once the warranty expires the replacement parts are very expensive, those units are for people with unlimited funds or who want the latest tech. Most likely you will never get your money back, you may save a few dollars a month on cooling and heating cost but never recoup the upfront cost, and the repair cost will be very high.

i won't sell spine fin tubing. yes it is very efficient. however, i would be selling an expensive maintenance every 3-5 years. you're looking at a complete break down of the condensing unit to expose the coil. owners manual says to take a propane torch to burn the embedded debris and finish with a hose. most guys in the trade are charging at least 300-350 perhaps more for a proper maintenance. if your contractor won't inform you of the hidden costs, then find someone else. a trane condenser is for someone who is handy or can afford the proper upkeep. i've seen too many burned out trane compressors for lack of maintenance. by the way, compressors don't die, they're murdered.

Rheem and Ruud are good and exact same units. . This Brand is having the least amount of problems right now. ICP owns Carrier. For ICP, what you need to watch out for. The TXV in the evap coil can go bad after a few years. This could be fixed with adding what we call "AC Renu" But best to change it out if that occurs. If you are having a new A/C installed, make sure the crew puts in brand new dual run capacitor. Those can go bad within the first year because of cheap china made crap.

Hi Chuck. Both have decent reputations in the industry. As mentioned above, Ruud is the same as Rheem. However, ICP does not own Carrier. They were once both a subsidiary of United technologies and now Carrier has branched off separately and owns ICP. Not that it matters much…
Although Carrier owns ICP, their products aren’t exactly the same unlike Carrier and Bryant. I think the ultimate answer to your question is find a good contractor you like and going with whatever brand they love. The installer matters way more than the brand. I like the American Standard furnace that looks like a fridge, because it's so easy to access everything. However, i think you'd only mentioned the platinum series heat pump and not sure if that will also work with the air conditioner? From what I understand, heat pumps push both cool and hot air...does that make my air conditioner redundant or can it work in tandem? I only ended up calling a tech when a transformer went out and I wasn't sure on going about how to replace it. Surprisingly the compressor and coils are still good and original.

Exactly 9 11/16 from edge....Exactly where new coil had just been replaced!!!!!!!
Over $5,000 for a Trane unit that operated less than 100 days total.
Then was sabotaged by someone who knew exactly where the coil is sitting behind panel cover.
Called 1800Trane and asked if installer had been reimbursed for labor,on the warranty claim on the defective unit.

    edited to reflect current status:
We purchased an American Standard heating and cooling unit for a new, custom home. We initially commented to the installer that the refrigerant lines seems excessively noisy for a unit that is advertised as “quiet”. Dealer didn’t find anything wrong with the install, or refrigerant lines and there were no changes to made.
Now, less than two years later, the compressor locked up.
The distributor didn't have a replacement part and initially we were told it could take three weeks to receive one. Our dealer (AdvancedAir LLC) worked with someone who was able to procure a replacement compressor off of the factory floor, drove two hours to pick it up and then repaired the unit so that it is now functioning better than new. Total time without A/C was a week which is much better than three.
With the new compressor installed, it is now obvious that the original compressor was faulty from the start. I have a video of the original compressor noise verses the replacement compressor, but can't post it here and see no need to at this time. We can no longer hear the AC running. Before, the compressor could be heard in any room located on the same side of the house as the outdoor unit. Before, the noise in the basement was almost unbearable... now, it's just a gentle hum.
Because of this, our dealer is making an appeal to American Standard to cover it under warranty. Unfortunately, even though the compressor is covered, the labor and the 13-14 pounds of replacement refrigerant contaminated by the faulty compressor is not covered after a year. Hopefully American Standard will do the right thing and help with the costs.

The noise difference is night and day! Unfortunately, the warranty after 1 year only covers the compressor. I use to do clean room installations and what I can say with no doubt is that you should never base any decision on UV being part of the filtration. As fast as the air is moving you would have to over several hundred watts for it to have any impact.

    • @anthonylosego
      @anthonylosego 2 роки тому +5

Consider though, that the place where the UV is will not grow things. So the last place you want to have to toss out the unit and buy a new one is the main handler. If you keep that clean, you can discourage it as a source of mold/mildew. If the UV is not covering the basin or evaporator, it's not a good design.
If you are just trying to purify the air, well that's different. But preventing the places where it originates from getting growth, well, that's the point really.

UV is very effective at killing mold growing on AC coils. Coils that are moist on a continuous basis, even here in the ultra low humidity desert. As someone who has pretty extreme allergies to mold, I can state unequivocally that UV made a significant difference in my allergies. My home went from basically unlivable to being OK for me in less than a week.
You just have to make sure that all the surfaces that could be wet are exposed - my parents had a horizontal V coil so we had to put three bulbs in to hit all three surfaces as they all could potentially be wet (and they were, and pretty nasty). Vertical A coils are the easiest - just one light under the coil is sufficient.
