What is the best tuner programmer for a 5.9 Cummins?

There is a lot of talk on the internet about which tuner is the best for our 5.9 cummins trucks. This article covers a few options and explains which programmer I feel is best for a 5.9 cummins truck and why:
My First Choice of Tuners for 03-07 5.9 Cummins Trucks:
Smarty MM3:
The MM3 is my 1st choice in tuners and I’ll explain why below; but BOTH the MM3 and Smarty Touch share an important feature which makes them hands down the safest tuning platform: Automated failed flash recovery. I had a customer on one of the other platforms below experience an interrupted flash which left him dead in the water. The company actually requested he send his ECM in to have it reset to the factory tune.
Had this happened with an MM3 or Smarty Touch tuner, recovery would have taken 5 minutes.
The Smarty MM3 and Smarty Touch are very similar but have some key differences. The Smarty Touch is a touch screen tuner with different power level tunes pre-installed. These tunes don’t include any transmission tuning on 03-07 5.9 Cummins trucks.
The MM3 Tuner is my 1st choice in tuners because it has a lower price and it comes with the Smarty Comm Mod (a $209 value and required for On The Fly Tuning). To contrast, a Smarty Touch customer would have to buy the Smarty Touch at a higher price than the MM3 and then add the comm mod for an extra $209. If you’re in the market for custom tuning, I don’t see any benefit to paying the higher initial costs of the Smarty Touch because you will most likely never use the pre-installed tunes it comes with.
With that said, The Smarty Touch can accept custom tuning, so if you already own one place an order and send me your stock file! I started with a Smarty Touch and still use it today, running the same tunes I’m selling here.
Both the MM3 and Smarty Touch are superior in data-logging capabilities over any other platform listed which is key in nailing down any trouble spots with your tune.

HP Tuners MPIV2:
This platform is by far the most economical way to get my tunes into your truck. The initial cost for the tuning software and hardware (MPVI2) is $299.99 and you’ll need 2 credits at $50 each for a total cost of $399.99 plus the cost of your custom tunes.
The main limitations of this platform are that you will need your laptop whenever you want to change tunes; there is no true on the fly tuning, and there is no failed flash recovery.

Edge CTS2 Pro:
This platform is the flashiest of them all and offers support for a backup camera and user added gauges. It can hold four tunes and the cost is currently $530.96. This platform also requires two HP Tuners credits which adds $100 at the time of ordering your tunes. The CTS2 also has the similar limitations as the HP Tuners MPVI2; no on the fly tuning and no failed flash recovery.

Costwise, here is the bottom line:
Out The Door price (OTD) includes a 2 tune package without EGT kit and without on the fly tuning:
MM3= $680.00 ($930 OTD With 2 tune package)

No matter which tuning platform you choose, I have you covered.
You left out the most important part, the tunes! Hands down your tunes are the best in my opinion ( and I have used Jr and S-06 box tunes, as well as Smarty custom UDC tunes from others, and even tried EFILive tunes). I can say for a fact your tow tune saved me over $4k since I was about to switch back to stock injectors from my BBi Stage 1 injectors due to EGTs towing at altitude - CO Mountains. But with your tow tune I have no more EGT problems and tons of power.

Been running your 60hp tune for my daily regular town driving and sometimes your 90hp 12-valve tune when i want to have a bit more fun and on the vary rare occasion your big hp tune. let me say I have been absolutely so impressed with all aspects of your tune! everything from shifts points to fuel economy and even how the tune will change after it gets to a warm operating temp to put less stress on the motor. I know i am could still have you fine tune for my truck after i drove it a bit but it has been that good that I have not needed to so thank you! and anyone else with a 5.9 cummins, do yourself a favor and

@@DieselCamper hi there, question about your in frame overhaul, but you didn't have any replies on that thread, so I had to chase you into this one. Sorry. My question, I hope you get this.... Did you reuse your rod bearing bolts? Did you go new? Oem, arp? I'm about to do the same job this weekend.. But I've heard if I use arp's I have to get the rod connection re-honed. Is this true? I would like to tune my '05 5.9 Cummins but when I connect a CTS2 tuner on, it gives me "does not detect ignition" while engine is off or on (eventually sold the brand newCTS2 to a guy with a Powerstroke and it worked on his 7.3). My research on cummins forums has one resolution which is replacing the TIPM. Anyone else have this issue? Is the TIPM a possible solution?
I was one of the ones with the cts2 that messed up. Mine came from a short in the wiring harness. Had to replace ecm. Great tunes but I bought a 2020.

What is the difference between power on demand and on the fly tuning???
Power on demand is really just remapping the throttle, on the fly tuning is actually programming new tuning parameters into the ECM while it's operating

just had my 48re on my 04 2500 cummins rebuilt with a tripple disc torque converter, upgraded clutches, and billet imput shaft and a shift kit. i have a smarty s06, i just put a 90hp tune on it, and im courious can i run safely a 160 tune or possably the 210 everything is basiclly stock i have 5" exhaust and s and b cold air intake
Had the same problem with my edge cts 2 thought it was my transmission. drove me crazy ended taking the computer out getting a new one think there’s something electrical wise going on caused the tunes to mess up . Now that the trucks back to stock it drives like a brick shift points are different feels slow laggy and clunky in and out or gears. I don’t want to have to go threw this process another time looking at your vids might have to spend some more $ but want things to be right . Any possibility’s on the electrical side of things ? Had a shop go threw things. Might have a parasitic draw - or an aftermarket stereo . Anthing helps .

What do you think about the Banks 6 gun idash.i have a 04 dodge 3500 5.9 Cummins only thing that been done is a banks air intake that i put on. far as I know it is stock.

I have the Smarty Touch on my ‘03 and I love it. I am impressed with even the “canned tunes” that you mentioned. I have been considering the TNT-R tunes. Do you have any thoughts about those?
I got a 04.5 first tuner I got was a edge cs2 i really didn't care for it so i sold that and bought a smarty jr for a great deal. I felt the power was better out of the jr even tho it's like 70hp rated different. But now I got a smarty touch and love it. But it dont show my transmission temp dont no y. It is a 2015 edition maybe that's y. But it can b pulled off and put on another without extra vin license
That's the old firmware. The new firmware will require a Vin license to tune different trucks. The MM3 does have trans temp for 04.5 trucks but you might need a firmware update to get it.
foxxx 5.9 don’t update I have a race me locked to my old truck that was totaled now I have to pay 150 bucks to put my tuner on my new truck stick with the old firm ware and tune as many trucks as you want

A 90hp tune should be ok, but within reason... Drag racing with a full load of gravel in the bed not advised. www.mm3tuning.com

@@DieselCamper I dont live in CA but might eventually end up returning there so I have to look for something easily reversible for any testing they might want to do. Thankfully the 06 is still a 5.9 with only a cat and none of the complicated emissions stuff.

Most mpg gains are because of injection timing changes. Whether it's worth it, that's up to you. You will see a big difference in how your truck drives though.
