The problem that I've been having and it seemed to get worse with Left 4 Bots is that when bots go down they all rush to pick up, now this seems like a good thing, but with a tank on expert is a death sentence, if one of the bots go down the other 2 will rush towards to pick up and go down on the next tank punch, one teammate down means all 3 go down. Hopefully this new version will fix that
My only gripe with it, is that when a survivor gets downed while there is a Tank, the bots will just rush to save the survivor ignoring the Tank. Even if the Tank is blocking the way, the bots would try run through the Tank.
Maybe there's a potential way to have a tank config file or expanded tank settings? Like a setting that tells the bots "drop everything you're doing, kill the tank"
Makes me feel nostalgic over CS 1.6/CSS mods for improved and more vocal bots. And considering how L4D started as essentially a mod for CSS, I feel we've come full circle. Thanks for the video, I just wished such mod existed sooner lol
@tumble8323 I wish CS:S had a mod that improved the bots, that's something the game really needs. I know there are custom botprofile db files out there but those only change certain settings like accuracy, reaction time, and the weapons that certain bots use.

Tip for anyone here: if you change the distance on which the ai bots will shoot at enemies, this will cause them to waste more ammo if they do not have a laser sight. because they will be shooting at infected further away, their accuracy will be much worse, making them miss their shots much more often, id say they miss roughly 85% of the time but keeping it at the default 950 means that id say they miss 15% of the time of the time even without a laser sight they will still hit their target
I think the reason bots struggle with ladders and stairs is not due to the AI itself, but rather due to bad nav meshes, I say that because usually it seems to happen on custom maps that don't have properly optimized nav meshes, like the one shown at the end of the video. I've played CS:S on tons of custom maps with bots and sometimes you'll see the same exact thing happen with those bots too, but I've seen the bots use ladders and stairs just fine on maps where the nav meshes were manually optimized
If this addon gets another update to prevent bots to revive a teammate very close to a Tank or when they are getting targeted by one... that day we could say bots are finally' 'fixed''. I also like the human-like behaviour of bots without being superman but without being super dumb. Personally I used a lot Left4Bots, but a while ago I started to use left4bots2 and I wasn't dissapointed.
This is really useful. I always played solo, and very rarely multiplayer. I never played versus, but I have all the achievements from every solo game mode, such as Survival and Campaign. Thanks, Nascoz. My Left 4 Dead 2 experience is greater than before.
smilzo is awesome, I've been using his Left 4 Bots 1 for a long time as well and when the 2nd version came out as an alpha I got excited and immediately tried it. I cannot play L4D2 without this mod anymore, I've been enjoying playing in singleplayer mode more than co-op with random people.
Yep. Competitive Bots is outdated at this point. Way better bot addons out there now. I used to use it in conjunction with L4B1 but L4B2 does fine without it.
@nascoz3884 Most bots mods at that time were just purely console command changes. Most activate few settings mainly such as allowing bots to continue on their own. So each bot mod weren't really that much different from each others. And because default bots during campagain are programmed to behave like CS:S bots (stand still when they see infected) they will barely push on their own during horde runs, and those cannot be fixed without SourceMod Plugins. Which many people who play L4D2 casually won't bother install (people using SourceMod won't able to play official server either if they have friend to play). With knowledge what cvars does. One can just do the same without competitive bots. In fact Left 4 Bot (2) also has a convar.txt file for that. Such as allow bots to take lead (theres even command to set how much distance bots are allowed to wander before bot consider the human player being outside the "team zone" and stop leading and runs back), how many team max for melee weapon and so on.
It's a nice simple guide video about a very neat mod that improves the game a ton. For the first time in several videos, I did not see a single instance of Bai Mountain having shade thrown.
been playing a few campaigns with this mod, and it's the real deal. crazy how reliable the bots are now. they still have their moments but overall they perform well. ellis and zoey in particular are the MVPs. the new ai turns them into killing machines at every range with their sniper rifle weapon preference and the ability to competently use melee weapons. every map im not playing as one of them they're top 2 in kills

I used merciless and theyre problematic when it comes to tasks, sometimes they focus on slaying hordes more than surviving once i died right in front of the alarm off button and instead of going to where i was to use defib they camped their spot slaying the hordes till they all died lmao i also reckon they cant actually turn off the alarm so theres that
I just love supping up L4D2 with mods and to make the AI better as I play this game alone, and my son ended up taking a liking to this game as well. So having bots more competent are always a plus.

I download an Advanced AI mod and it made bots cracked lmao. They would carry a gas tank on the back and shoot special infected through the wall. They even would teleport to avoid fire damage 😭
That mod is the best if you want a competitive and helpful bots... I used that mod before the left 4 bots and they are so good, too good actually... They killed more SI and common and carried me sometimes...
NasCoz. I want to genuinely thank you for this video. Before this, my bots were absolutely horrible. Now, damn, they are much more reliable. Still, I wonder which setting can make the bots run as fast as they could. As they usually fall behind me if I don't notice. Btw: I removed scout and awp from all survivors' pick list. Glad you instructed me with that. I still let Ellis and Zoey use semiauto snipers (I have script add on for the two guns to make them shoot faster. Almost as fast as real life DMR).
I'd like to add a few more things: - *_fall_velocity_warp_* makes it to they're warped back to their position if they happened to fall off at a certain height. I set it 560 (the speed at which you'll get minor damage). This is very useful for tall ladders and areas with a steep drop. Questionable Ethics is more bearable to play with. - I recommend still using CB+ with L4B2. The mod makes it so the bots avoid friendly fire by moving. Having them moving a lot gives them enough velocity to dodge whichever needs dodging (also it looks better than having them just stand there which is sorta unnatural compared to a real player). - The mod is a cvar loader in general. *_load_convars_* can also load other cvars not related to *_sb._* I use it to give the M60 some reserve ammo. - L4B2 has undergone so much updates and changes since last year. OGs remember when the bots barely shot at anything because they kept shoving everything and everything, including Tanks and Chargers. I had to repeatedly nag smilzo about it until they finally fixed it. With that said, as someone who usually plays solo, L4B2 has been a lifesaver, and even if I was hosting with just my brother (a complete newbie), I never had any problems with the bots accompanying him.
Personally I use advanced AI addon, because I have “super hordes” installed which increases the zombie limit from 20 to 400. For some reason this advanced bot addon was the only one competent enough to hold their own along with me during all that chaos, I’ve already tested others and survivability was slim using other addons.
i also have bill 's favorite weapon as the m16 since he uses it in the sacrfice comic and he is a vietnam vet. i also have him prioritizing the m60 over the auto shotguns since its also a vietnam gun
btw manual_attack_always just makes them use manual attack even when not doing orders, they’ll still use manual attack when doing orders no matter if that setting is on
Oh my god I've been revealed playing Half-Life Source. I swear it's a totally bad version of Half-Life, totally. Man, smilzo has come a long way since the original L4B, and I'm in awe at how much his work has evolved and helped many people in L4D2 have a good time, myself included.

This mod is so good that some really good but difficult maps like burried deep, warcelona,... become more playable even on expert realism Except that the bot still need a feature to let them revival abandon when the tank is too close, shooting flammable barrels on accident and the worst of all, dip themselves into spitter's goo and fire
My favorite is Merciless Survivor Bots (Complete Edition) from Gamemaps from Kurochama. It was awesome and it has options like pipebomb ai throws and player death don't restart the chapter (unless all survivors are down).
i had this mod.. i didn't know someone made it better thank you. i always wanted to improve them it honestly is fun. i wonder how well they could do campaigns on there own.
I remember I used to try and get the bots into situations where they would die in really dumb ways (the easiest one was just to stand right outside a witch's range and a bot would just stand near a witch and piss her off lol)
I think bots dealing with walking into molotovs is sadly a nav issue as in a engine issue, its probably somthing having to do with the nav being marked as dangerous and the bots just dont care with that like its not being enforced enough, maybe if someone made it so if fire is near, it will force them to move, thats my only way of fixing it instead of having nav handling it.
I have no idea what's causing L4B1 and 2 to break on my end, where the bots will go braindead and shuffle in place whenever the mod tells them to move out of the way of something, like a charger attack or a tank approaching them, lasting until they warp themselves due to distance in exchange for breaking their ability to follow manual commands. I couldn't find anyone else having an issue to this extent, so until I can find out what's wrong, I'm essentially stuck using L4B1 with most of the automatic move functions turned off and using other sourcemods/vscripts to substitute those functions (was able to find something to cover everything except charger dodging. They could even use melee weapons competently, though they'd better have a primary on their person too or they'd run off on their own and get gankmageddon'd chasing every common on the map endlessly).
I'll definitely get this at some point. On an unrelated note, I wonder if there's something like this for Vermintide 2, I've had way too many moments where I get hooked and instead of shooting the rattie with their gun, they just chase after them. Especially in close proximity, they just start edging, trying to swing at the target, getting us all killed in the process.
Played solo a lot with this mod, good stuff, basically impossible for me to play without now my only gripe with this mod apart from the well known defects of bots ignoring tank when he’s too close and bots not caring about fire is how the manual attack mode makes the bots a bit too op against specials even at skill level 1 they basically kill the specials before i can even react when i’m in a chokepoint, which makes me feel like i’m not really contributing anything kind of a minor thing though, the bots are still fair aside from that and still very possible for them to lose
This needs to be actually added to the game, I’d also like them to carry extra grenades for you and always save human players from special infected before other bots

It’s weird how GoldSRC has a ton of third party bots, but for source I only know of RCBot2 and E-Bot.

been playing a few campaigns with this mod, and it's the real deal. crazy how reliable the bots are now. they still have their moments but overall they perform well. ellis and zoey in particular are the MVPs. the new ai turns them into killing machines at every range with their sniper rifle weapon preference and the ability to competently use melee weapons. every map im not playing as one of them they're top 2 in kills

There is also "Merciless Survivor Bots" which is pretty good as well
I remember the AI being way too overpowered with that mod but it has been awhile. Still I'm pretty comfortable with my bot setup
I used merciless and theyre problematic when it comes to tasks, sometimes they focus on slaying hordes more than surviving once i died right in front of the alarm off button and instead of going to where i was to use defib they camped their spot slaying the hordes till they all died lmao i also reckon they cant actually turn off the alarm so theres that

I just love supping up L4D2 with mods and to make the AI better as I play this game alone, and my son ended up taking a liking to this game as well. So having bots more competent are always a plus.

I download an Advanced AI mod and it made bots cracked lmao. They would carry a gas tank on the back and shoot special infected through the wall. They even would teleport to avoid fire damage 😭
That mod is the best if you want a competitive and helpful bots... I used that mod before the left 4 bots and they are so good, too good actually... They killed more SI and common and carried me sometimes...

NasCoz. I want to genuinely thank you for this video. Before this, my bots were absolutely horrible. Now, damn, they are much more reliable. Still, I wonder which setting can make the bots run as fast as they could. As they usually fall behind me if I don't notice.
Btw: I removed scout and awp from all survivors' pick list. Glad you instructed me with that. I still let Ellis and Zoey use semiauto snipers (I have script add on for the two guns to make them shoot faster. Almost as fast as real life DMR).
The best mod I've discovered, I managed to get the expert on all campaigns achievement with it even though it still took a dozen tries

I'd like to add a few more things:
- *_fall_velocity_warp_* makes it to they're warped back to their position if they happened to fall off at a certain height. I set it 560 (the speed at which you'll get minor damage). This is very useful for tall ladders and areas with a steep drop. Questionable Ethics is more bearable to play with.
- I recommend still using CB+ with L4B2. The mod makes it so the bots avoid friendly fire by moving. Having them moving a lot gives them enough velocity to dodge whichever needs dodging (also it looks better than having them just stand there which is sorta unnatural compared to a real player).
- The mod is a cvar loader in general. *_load_convars_* can also load other cvars not related to *_sb._* I use it to give the M60 some reserve ammo.
- L4B2 has undergone so much updates and changes since last year. OGs remember when the bots barely shot at anything because they kept shoving everything and everything, including Tanks and Chargers. I had to repeatedly nag smilzo about it until they finally fixed it.
With that said, as someone who usually plays solo, L4B2 has been a lifesaver, and even if I was hosting with just my brother (a complete newbie), I never had any problems with the bots accompanying him.

Personally I use advanced AI addon, because I have “super hordes” installed which increases the zombie limit from 20 to 400.
For some reason this advanced bot addon was the only one competent enough to hold their own along with me during all that chaos, I’ve already tested others and survivability was slim using other addons.
i have used left 4 bots (both versions) for quite a while (with settings found in the discussion board) and i NEVER looked back since
i also have bill 's favorite weapon as the m16 since he uses it in the sacrfice comic and he is a vietnam vet. i also have him prioritizing the m60 over the auto shotguns since its also a vietnam gun
btw manual_attack_always just makes them use manual attack even when not doing orders, they’ll still use manual attack when doing orders no matter if that setting is on
Yep, that's true. So the issue the bots had in L4B1 is fixed regardless if manual attack always is on or not.

Every time When i solo a campaign on expert with no mods i always have to hold out my medkit the second i reach 39 health
This mod is so good that some really good but difficult maps like burried deep, warcelona,... become more playable even on expert realism
Except that the bot still need a feature to let them revival abandon when the tank is too close, shooting flammable barrels on accident and the worst of all, dip themselves into spitter's goo and fire
Been usimg this one for a while. Definitely improves solo play on advanced and lower.
You can order the bots to kill a Witch for you and wait hold a position in a specific spot too

My favorite is Merciless Survivor Bots (Complete Edition) from Gamemaps from Kurochama. It was awesome and it has options like pipebomb ai throws and player death don't restart the chapter (unless all survivors are down).
i had this mod.. i didn't know someone made it better thank you. i always wanted to improve them it honestly is fun. i wonder how well they could do campaigns on there own.

I remember I used to try and get the bots into situations where they would die in really dumb ways (the easiest one was just to stand right outside a witch's range and a bot would just stand near a witch and piss her off lol)
I just witnessed nick pick up ammo for the chain gun. I have no addons that allow to do that. These bots are perfecto

My left 4 dead 2 playthrough is different and much fun and better!
I think bots dealing with walking into molotovs is sadly a nav issue as in a engine issue, its probably somthing having to do with the nav being marked as dangerous and the bots just dont care with that like its not being enforced enough, maybe if someone made it so if fire is near, it will force them to move, thats my only way of fixing it instead of having nav handling it.
Finally, recognition for the true bot mod
now, they literally shoot every single gas can, propane tank, oxygen tank, etc. that they walk by, WHY!? what did this add-on do?!?!
My complaint with Left 4 Bots 2 is the fact the bots just run off without you and there's no way to get them to actually follow you

I have no idea what's causing L4B1 and 2 to break on my end, where the bots will go braindead and shuffle in place whenever the mod tells them to move out of the way of something, like a charger attack or a tank approaching them, lasting until they warp themselves due to distance in exchange for breaking their ability to follow manual commands. I couldn't find anyone else having an issue to this extent, so until I can find out what's wrong, I'm essentially stuck using L4B1 with most of the automatic move functions turned off and using other sourcemods/vscripts to substitute those functions (was able to find something to cover everything except charger dodging. They could even use melee weapons competently, though they'd better have a primary on their person too or they'd run off on their own and get gankmageddon'd chasing every common on the map endlessly).

I'll definitely get this at some point. On an unrelated note, I wonder if there's something like this for Vermintide 2, I've had way too many moments where I get hooked and instead of shooting the rattie with their gun, they just chase after them. Especially in close proximity, they just start edging, trying to swing at the target, getting us all killed in the process.
Played solo a lot with this mod, good stuff, basically impossible for me to play without now
my only gripe with this mod apart from the well known defects of bots ignoring tank when he’s too close and bots not caring about fire is how the manual attack mode makes the bots a bit too op against specials even at skill level 1
they basically kill the specials before i can even react when i’m in a chokepoint, which makes me feel like i’m not really contributing anything
kind of a minor thing though, the bots are still fair aside from that and still very possible for them to lose
Left 4 bots 2 + tactical training = versus with bots. I play it a lot and it feels so challenging 😅
